The problem is solved. Both Font-path and package xfonts-base were set
and installed. However since it was just an update to newer package versions
i did not control the update process very carefully. It seeems that
configuration of the package xfonts-base failed for some reason.
A dpkg-reconfigure xfonts-base did the trick!

Version 4.0.3, Neomagic, 100% CPU, Thinkpad 240.

2001-04-22 Thread Neil Levine
I have seen this reported on the Xfree86 lists and previously on here.
Xfree86 (the binary) running at 100% yet the console is blacked out
and unresponsice.

Running either startx or XFree86 with strace yields no obvious errors
and Xfree86.log doesnt show anything untoward either.

Putting in the no_accel option and the server starts Ok (albeit as
slow as ?!$*).

Kinda lost as what to do next. My XF86Config-4 hasnt changed since the
last time I rebooted my Thinkpad 240 laptop although I notice the
binaries did on April 14.

Sorry, the /modules/ were changed yesterday:

-rwxr-xr-x1 root root50915 Apr 22 09:15
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/neomagic_drv.o

Running woody.
