I think that the CD and  DVD images should be sign with image mainintainer's 
GPG key before uploading them to server.

This would be better and the safer solution.

a favour by mentioning these, and should consider other sources.

Previously I posted to debian-doc and was told to post a bug report, but I
can't find the tracker for the website.

I was asked to post alternatives, but many online resources are

Hey everyone,

Here's what I came up with for the first draft of the new page. If there's
anything that you want added just let me know, or feel free to add it! For
the introduction I took parts of other pages that I thought would be
relevant to the information given here.

 I have added two small notes, one at the end of the intro paragraph and
one under "Publicity/Events". If someone could take a look at those that
would be great! (:

I'm also unsure of how the formatting should be done, I was just following
Francesca's example on the report. That's something I could work on for
version 2!

Hi everyone,

I took up working on this

and have came up with the first draft. It seems like a really good idea to
get all this stuff in one place like the Fedora people have (
https://fedoraproject.org/en/join-fedora), and it would be much more
beneficial to make it easier for new people to come and help.

I noticed on the 'Software distributions based on Debian' page located at 
http://www.debian.org/misc/children-distros under the Ubuntu section it has 
mentioned that..."...a commitment to security updates with 18 months of support 
for every release...".
I understand that the support cycle for non-LTS releases of Ubuntu have now 
been reduced to nine months (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases). This may 
require an update of information provided in the Ubuntu section of the above 
mentioned page on the Debian site. However it may also require appropriate 
changes anywhere else Ubuntu's release cycle is referred to.

This may be no help at all, but I had a problem with Etch detecting an 
external CDROM when it went through a USB hub. Connected directly to the USB 
port in the laptop, it was detected and recognised.

 It's possible to use `m4', or, I suppose, `cpp', with a file
 extension, and configure Apache with a `handler' that causes it to
 run the file through the macro processor on the fly.

 Or, you can use `m4' to generate static pages.  There was an article
 in the `Linux Gazette' about it.  You should be able to find it if
 you go grep there.

Hello,

This email resulted from a request from someone on -devel/-user (I forget
which) and a small talk in #debian-devel.

Would it be possible to open parts of the list archives in lists.debian.org
to *selected* indexing bots? The glimpse search engine lists.debian.org
offers is sometimes limited in what it can do...

I propose that (at least) indexing bots from major public searchable
directories with a very good track record (in matters such as public
behaviour, crawler behaviour and relevance to GNU/Linux and GNU/Hurd users
due to the content of their searchable indexes) to be allowed to index the
*public* list archives.  Maybe the ability to narrow down searches to a
given domain (so that we can ask it to only search *debian.org) might be
required, as well if there is a perceived need for it.

(on the other hand, if bandwidth is not an issue, all indexer robots might
be allowed -- but I assume the bots were blocked in the first place to save
on bandwidth)

Of course, only search engines which are actually *requested* by someone
need to be considered for inclusion (btw, please consider google (crawler
robot id "Googlebot") requested).

Selective permission based on robot id is both supported by the robots.txt
file, or alternatively (should there be a need for not trusting the
robots.txt system for some reason) by a apache mod_rewrite rule which feeds
different robots.txt files depending on the requesting browser ("crawler").

BTW, I am in no way affiliated with google, I just happen to like their
search engine.

for the linux standards base.  I was intrigued, so I clicked through
the archives of "lcs-eng".  Guess what: the last legitimate message
was sent in about October 1998, but there are three more years of spam
archived for all to see!

Perhaps inactive lists such as this can be retired?

I agree, but it's the listmaster scripts that deliver mail to the archives,
they should retire it.

If you'd be so kind to submit a bug report on listarchives with the dates
when the lists you noticed were dead became dead, and I'll remove the spam
archives, and then reassign the bug to lists.debian.org.

Hi,

I just encountered a problem with the website which I will try to
describe below:

1. Go to https://packages.debian.org/sid/m17n-db
2. Click on the list of files which takes to

   https://packages.debian.org/sid/all/m17n-db/filelist

which returns an error telling

No such package in this suite on this architecture.

The package is very much there and installed on all of my systems.

3. I could reproduce this problem for any package whose architecture
is mentioned/tagged as "all".

I hope this problem will be resolved.

Dvd debian 11 instalación

Hola
Compre un dvd de debian 11 y en correos España les supo mal y me dijeron
que tenia que pagar 6€ por venir de fuera de la comunidad europea .
El dvd lo tuve que tirar a la basura porque no instalaba nada, se quedaba
colgado.
Asi que no solo me ha pasado con este dvd de debian si no con otros de
windows. El hardware no es el problema, es el gobierno que no quieren que
tengamos un portatil y les da igual el SO que usemos.
Me regalaron un portatil Sony Vaio y los muy envidiosos no quieren que lo
use y llevo comprado varios S.O y ninguno termina la instalacion porque
este gobierno lo controla todo y a todos y solo quieren que vivamos con los
prejuicios, miedos y amenazas que nos meten cada dia en el cuerpo.
Asi que estoy sin ordenador porque lo que compro pasan por las manos de
este gobierno que nos amenaza hasta por rezar y me mandan dvd que no sirven
para nada.
Incluso tenia una unidad de disco duro con linux y me lo han roto para no
poder usarlo en el portatil.
Y hace unos dias fui a una tienda de informatica  a preguntar que valia
windows 7 y me pedian 150€ y les dije que No y me acusaron de piratilla por
comprar software no oficial o pirata .

Debian news of 2014

It appears that https://www.debian.org/News/2014/ (Dutch version, with
title "Nieuws in 2014") does not contain the Debian news of 2014, but of
2011 instead.

Research of the problem:
- After retrieving all 20 news pages that https://www.debian.org/News/
refers to, it appears that the news of 2014 (Dutch version) cannot be
found on a page that is intended for another year.
- After retrieving all 10 pages that https://www.debian.org/News/2014/
refers to, to have the Dutch page in all other available languages too,
it appears that the problem only pertains to the Dutch version of the
page.

Bug#238245: Volunteer to help with mass-relicensing of website when the time comes to do so (was Re: Proposed plan (and license) for the webpage relicensing)

wanted to chime in to volunteer my help.

I also wanted to volunteer my time to help with this part of the
solution whenever the Debian community is ready to move forward.  I have
some experiencing handling mass-relicensing of copyrights when no
copyright assignments are in place.  For example, through my work at the
Software Freedom Conservancy, I assisted the Squeak community in
relicensing their software under a Free Software license (previously it
had been under a semi-Free Software, "no commercial only" license).

It's a common misconception that relicensing cannot be done without
copyright assignment and/or by getting explicit, written assent from
each copyright holder.  While explicit and written assent from each
copyright holder is the ideal, various public mechanisms and call for
comment periods can be used for those contributors that are difficult to
track down.

I don't think there's any need to go into the details about this now; my
point in sending this email is to offer my help as a volunteer when the
Debian community is ready to handle the relicensing from OPL.

What I saw in that thread was Wichert saying that things in non-US
needed to be there because of patents, and Steve Langasek saying that
that those things needed to be in non-US/non-free. That's not what I see
below.

non-US/main is designed so that packages can be imported into the US,

belong in non-US/main.

He did not mention anything specifically regarding patents, but he did
mention non-US/non-free quite prominently:

But the software is still non-free. It didn't suddenly become free and

As I said before: any software which is legal to use in the US, legal to
import into the US, but illegal or restricted to export from the US.
Remnants of crypto-in-main might be a good idea. I can't possibly imagine
every situation in which non-US/main might be useful, just like I can't
imagine every inconsistent license (and trust me, there's a lot of them)
that passes through this mailing list. I am confident, though, that it
will be useful.

Patented software does not have to be patent-encumbered (for example, we
have many programs and libraries in both main and non-US/main that use

Awesome, thanks for this!

One remaining problem is that it doesn't render properly :-(.  Here's
what I see in Firefox (on Windows XP); note the missing information in
the second paragraph:

Thanks, that's good to know.

The document does look authoritative to the casual observer, however.
Maybe we could get it removed until such time as it gets updated.

Uses Debian pages (maybe all of them), the Debian logo overlaps the name
of the institution using Debian, which quite obviously makes it hard to
read.  I'm using Chromium from amd64/sid.

Iceweasel as well and see the problem there, too.

Sarge DVD .jigdo or .template file corrupt

I built ISO's a few weeks ago, but accidently deleted them.

I have been trying again to to download them, but jigdo downloads the
first 10 files, then tries to add them to the temp ISO file and craps
out with an 153 error before it can get past 50%.

Are the .jigdo and .template files up to date?

In Spanish it is usually used without denoting any gender, but
when ther is one, I've heard it both in femenine ("Instalate una
Debian") and in masculine ("Tengo un Debian en casa"). I'm not a
lingustic, but I guess it depends on the gender of the implicit 
(and elipsed) noun ("distribucion/distribution" in the first case,
"ordenador/computer" in the second).

New Spanish coodinators

Problems with cvs

WWW cvs tree). But all I get is the following error:

I find the following clause troublesome (section v):

"1.If you are distributing Open Publication works on hardcopy or
CD-ROM, you provide email notification to 
the authors of your intent to redistribute at least thirty days before
your manuscript or media freeze, to give
the authors time to provide updated documents. This notification
should describe modifications, if any, made to the document."

This could mean that, for instance, if somebody decides to
include a copy of relevant parts of the Web site with a Debian
distribution, she should countact the authors every time a new CD is
prepared. This could be, at least, a problem, effectively preventing
people from redistributing the contents (which I guess is not the
target Debian is looking for).

However, this clause is found after the following statement:

In addition to the requirements of this license, it is requested from
and strongly recommended of redistributors that:

I don´t have a formal legal education, and I´m not sure if
this implies that the clausules may be satisfied, or that they have to 
be satisfied.

But in short, if every author of the Web site has to be
contacted in advance for making a CD with the contents of the site, I
guess this license should not be used.

In addition, there could be some problems with translations,
if translators are not considered a part of the authoring group
(I´m not sure whether this is the case for Debian pages). Translations are
considered modified works in this license, and because of that, they must
fulfill some conditions, like including the name of the translator, a
link to the original work, a label indicating that it is a modified
work, etc. (see section iv of the license). I guess these caluses are
not fulfilled in current translations of the Debian web site.

PS: There is another clause that bothers me (section v):

"3.Finally, while it is not mandatory under this license, it is
considered good form to offer a free copy of any 
hardcopy and CD-ROM expression of an Open Publication-licensed work to
its author(s)."

But since this is clearly optional, I guess it causes no harm.

Any problem with the updating of WWW pages?

I commited to CVS the followign page some days ago:

cvs/webwml/webwml/spanish/News/weekly/2000/13/index.wml

However, I still don't see 

http://www.debian.org/News/weekly/2000/13/index.es.html

Did I make something bad? Any problem with the updating of the 
Web pages?

Translation of Debian WWW to Catalonian

  Hi,

  I've met some people who are interested in translating the
Debian WWW (or parts of it) into Catalonian. For the moment, I'm going
to help them (in the future, probably some of them will take up the
coordination, since I'm not a native Catalonian speaker). I have
accesss to the WWW CVS (I'm helping with the Spanish translation). I
wonder if I should just start a new "catalonian" branch, and/or
whether I should do some additional modifications to some files. Of
course, if I need some kind of approval to start the new translation,
just let me know. I also wonder if somebody knows the code I should
use for the language (like the "es" we are using for Spanish). I
suppose it is "ca", but I'm not sure.

"ca" is for Catalonian, thaks, Chris). Can somebody help me? I just
need to know whter I should open a new "catalonian" branch in the CVS,

   Thanks for the answer and support. I'll ask about the name, but
I guess that "catalonian" could be better if directories are named in
English (like Spanish), or "catala", if they are named in their own
language. But I'll tell you.

when describing the "contrib" area:

"Packages in this area are free themselves but depend on other
software or hardware that is not free"

I wonder what is free hardware in this context... I'm not completely sure,
but I guess this is a bug. Otherwise, some comment on what is considered
"free hardware" should be provided.

   Probably that's the case. If it is, probably a note about that
should be included, and probably something like "hardware with closed
specifications" is much better than "non free hardware"

to put a note on what is "free hardware" or what is "non free
hardware" (its just a matter of applying a boolean not, isn't it?

 If you are talking about price, of course ;-) If you are talking
about freedom, of course too. But that applies to any program which
runs on almost any CPU, on almost any computer architecture (almos any
CPU, amost any architecture, are not free hardware). That's
why I'm thinking you are talking about something else...

 Now I see. But ROM images, for instance, are not
hardware. Perhaps firmware, but in the context used, they are mainly
"data". I wonder whether it would be better to say "non free data", or
perhaps "non freely available data". The sentence could be:

"Packages in this area are free themselves but depend on other
software that is not free, or on data that is not freely available
(like proprietary ROM images)."

This is perl, version 5.005_03 built for i386-linux

As far as I remember, it is the one in potato (not completely sure, I
have some woody and sid packages installed).

Should I revert to the older version, or are you planning to check

There are some automatic indexes in the Spanish translation of DWN which are 
not generated
correctly. However, the source WML pages are commited, and to me (I'm one of 
the coordinators
of the Spanish translation) they look ok.

For instance, in http://www.debian.org/News/weekly/2001/index.es.html only 
entries in English are available (although the corresponding Spanish pages 
are available)

In http://www.debian.org/News/weekly/index.es.html, only some of the 2001
issues are referneced, and only in English.

On the other hand, http://www.debian.org/News/weekly/2001/1/index.es.html
and http://www.debian.org/News/weekly/2001/2/index.es.html are ok.

I've talked about this to Javier Fernandez-Sanguino Peña, and he also
doesn't know how to fix it.
