sysadmins wanting to deploy Debian IMHO.

Agreed. Perhaps something like "Debian Use" or "Debian Worldwide"? Or
we just provide the actual information for the link content with
"Organizations using Debian" and "People using Debian". I personally
don't think the dates of use or deployment are that important at the
start of showcasing who and where Debian is being used. If needed a
followup to a company or individual can be sent to see if they are still
using Debian. As the section becomes more prominent and new testimonials
arrive those can be dated.

I'm not sure if it's ok to highlight certain deployments just because
they recently sent a mail to us, in any case I wouldn't call it "Fresh
deployments". Maybe "Recent testimonials"? I'm not sure, since they
are not "testimonials", "recomendations"... "Recent submissions" gives
machine-feeling, not human touch. I'm not native English speaker so
I'm afraid I cannot help better on this.

I think testimonials is fine, it is after all people/organizations
testifying about their use of and in use Debian systems.

Some years ago, a couple of people from the webteam pinged everyone
having
submitted an entry, and updated/removed entries as the replies
arrived. It

would be great to have someone do this in an organised manner.

Seems like the needed first step before considering to put more light
into this section: making stuff more visible, when we know some of them
are outdated for years, may not worth the effort (it may rather send the
wrong signal).

I wonder if it would be ideal to instead start the listing over from the
last years submissions to the present, which would give us a reasonably
'fresh' listing. This would as well allow for some recent testimonials
when we reach back out to those organizations as part of the update
process.

As one of the last person who tried to update the oldest entries, I’d be
very happy to see something more organized around it. The scripts I used
should be in CVS, and we’ve add a few mails on debian-www the last time
we started working on that, but I’d be happy to provide more guidance to
motivated people if needed.

I can assist.

Another thing is that we could say that in addition to English

translation from the English submission. The problem is when we reword
the English submission, though, it would need coordination with the
corresponding l10n team. Or maybe l10n teams could go to www-list to
take the original mail as reference, and then translate according to the
rewording in English.
Excellent idea on having the submission in native text. I am not sure of
the work load on the l10n teams, but it would seem to task them with
less work on the submissions as the native version is already
translated. Additionally they would have an English reference for use as
needed for formatting or other small changes.

Severity: normal

The Who's Using Debian[1] page is filled with many stale entries that need to

We have authored a set of procedures and a template for email outreach.
Comments, suggestions, and interested parties are welcome.

Who's Using Debian 2014 Audit

2014-10-27 Thread Donald Norwood
As a follow up to the Making Debian users more visible thread[1], a
sub-team consisting of Laura Arjona, Donald Norwood, and Kåre Thor
Olsen, are going to undertake the effort of auditing the current Who's
Using Debian[2] pages.

The initial draft[3] introduced the formation of the team, a call for
help, and a brief outline of the undertaking. We have opened bug
#766923[4] which has been tagged as a gift and have updated a defunct
entry on the wiki's WhoUsesDebian[5] page which outlines the proposed
workflow, concerns, notes for discussion, and the draft email to be sent
to users as part of the audit.

There is still work to be done and a few questions that need to be
addressed, particularly if we use this opportunity to request more
information from submitters towards use in other areas of Debian
Outreach, or if the information being asked needs to ask for other kinds
of information, or less information.

We welcome all comments, discussion, and of course, help.

Donald Norwood

Who's using Debian?

2) Commercial

3) http://portalus.com

We use Debian for our internal infrastructure and for consultation
deployments. We consistently choose Debian over other operation systems
primarily due to the open ended support, quick security updates,
excellent package management, documentation, and the accessible community.

Our network started with 2 servers running Debian and is now at 10
servers with plans for new local hardware of 20 servers for which 17
are slatted for Debian installations. We use Apache2, OpenLDAP, Samba,
Postfix, Dovecot, Digikam, and mysql.

Debian has been reliable and solid from the first day of installation.

2015-01-05 Thread Donald Norwood
Hello Debian DSA ,

For an upcoming Debian Project News[1] issue[2] we would like to highlight
a project or a group inside the Debian project.

We plan to share what you do in the project with the rest of the
community and the world, perhaps raising consciousness of your efforts
and to possibly attract new parties who may be interested in it and, of
course, the overall Debian project.

Towards that end, would you please respond or copy us within your
discussions with a small blurb about your group, and/or
something of interest within your group and its activities.

Best regards from the Publicity Team,

Donald Norwood

There was a build error that caused the daily full mirror listing to be
incomplete. The problematic script was fixed and the mirror listing is
now current and up to date.

There was a scripting error which did not allow the listing to post

think the page updated moments after your email. :)

DPN: DebianBuildd, What do you do?

2015-03-20 Thread Donald Norwood
Hello Debian Build Daemon support Team,

For an upcoming Debian Project News[1] issue[2] we would like to highlight
a project or a group inside the Debian project.

We plan to share what you do in the project with the rest of the
community and the world, perhaps raising consciousness of your efforts
and to possibly attract new parties who may be interested in it and, of
course, the overall Debian project.

Towards that end, would you please respond or copy us within your
discussions with a small blurb about your group, and/or
something of interest within your group and its activities.

Best regards from the Publicity Team,

I can write from the mirrors team.

Thank you again for mirroring Debian. We do appreciate your enthusiasm
to become an official Debian mirror sponsor and primary server; however,
at this time the official primary mirrors in place are sufficient. Your
organization is listed on the sponsors page, just not the official
sponsors page which as was mentioned is reserved strictly for the
primary mirrors.

Additionally your mirror is a new mirror to the listing and to the
users, let us see how well everything fits as more traffic moves toward
your direction. Perhaps after some time if there is a further need for
or an expansion of the primary mirrors we can revisit this conversation
again.

Best regards,

Donald Norwood
