I work many years now with Debian, and I have not seen any discussion or
"war" about this point.

You could also use e.g. lilo or syslinux. But it will be difficult to
run Debian without at least some GNU software.

No. Please feel what you feel.

You may call it Linux, as long as you use a Linux kernel. In Debian we
have freebsd kernels too. It's your choice.

Do what you think is the best.

Hmmm. Apologies for that. Juct checked in the logs and I can see you
came from the IP 62.159.77.166. I can't find any obvious reason for
the failure, though. Please try again?

Policy 3.9.4.0 upload target of 2012-09-18

2012-09-16 Thread Russ Allbery
Well, clearly my plan to do this a couple of weeks ago didn't actually
work, so new plan. I'm planning on uploading Policy 3.9.4 Tuesday evening
(2012-09-18). My hope is to then start working on documenting multiarch.

Sorry about the delay.

For Lintian folks, here's the upgrading checklist for this release:

 2.4
  New _tasks_ archive section.

 4.9
`build-arch' and `build-indep' are now mandatory targets in
  `debian/rules'.

 5.6.26
New section documenting the `Vcs-*' fields, which are already in
widespread use. Note the mechanism for specifying the Git branch
used for packaging in the Vcs-Git field.

 7.1
The deprecated relations < and > now must not be used.

 7.8
New `Built-Using' field, which must be used to document the
source packages for any binaries that are incorporated into this
package at build time. This is used to ensure that the archive
meets license requirements for providing source for all binaries.

 8.6
Policy for dependencies between shared libraries and other
packages has been largely rewritten to document the `symbols'
system and more clearly document handling of shared library ABI
changes. `symbols' files are now recommended over `shlibs' files
in most situations. All maintainers of shared library packages
should review the entirety of this section.

 9.1.1
Packages must not assume the `/run' directory exists or is usable
  without a dependency on `initscripts (>= 2.88dsf-13.3)' until the
stable release of Debian supports `/run'.

 9.11
New section documenting general requirements for alternate init
systems and specific requirements for integrating with upstart.

 12.5
All copyright files must be encoded in UTF-8.

Note that the change to make build-arch and build-indep mandatory is not
RC for wheezy.

CD FAQ: Changes to "How do I write an ISO image under Windows?"

2012-09-16 Thread Brian Potkin
The attached diff is an attempt to tidy up the section on writing an ISO
image under Windows. It changes some links, deletes a section or two and
generally tries to adapt the section to the overall look and feel of the
CD FAQ page.

The first entries are described in brackets as "Freeware", whatever that
means. My preference would be "Provided free of charge" in the text
body, as is done for the last entry, but I've just deleted any reference
to free of cost throughout the section as presumably a user can work it
out for herself,

Some headings are of the form "Something from Somewhere". There may be a
reason for this but it is not emulated thoughout this section or the
previous one. Why not "Brasero from Philippe Rouquier and Luis Medinas"?
I've adjusted the headings.

Adaptec/Roxio Easy-CD Creator
-

The Adaptec link doesn't lead anywhere useful. The Roxio link gets you
Creator NXT. There is no sign of Easy-CD Creator so the validity of the
description is questionable. I've deleted this entry.

Nero from Ahead Software

Why do we need to know where the software is from? Isn't a link
sufficient?

WinOnCD Power Edition from CeQuadrat

The link was dead for me. Section deleted.

CD Extreme from Sony

The link connects with a home page. I've changed it to one where the
software can be downloaded.
