Event and merchandise handling in Debian

2011-02-17 Thread Luca Capello
Hi there!

Debian, as other players in the Free Software world, is often present at
different meetings, expos or conferences around the world, in different
manners. Beside having Debian attendees or speakers, most of the time
there is a Debian booth, where you can usually find merchandise on sale.
It can be a bit strange to read that Debian people are interested in
merchandising. However, for a volunteer project like Debian handling
merchandise has different goals.

First, it is the easiest way to promote Debian, the best example being
some strange kilted guys [1] walking around in New York City during the
last DebConf10 [2]: every time someone asked us the reason to wear a
kilt, we jumped on the train and explained what Debian is, why it exists
and so on.

[1]
[2]

Second, Debian wants to please its users: which better way to make them
happy than giving them the possibility to carry around a Debian "sign"
(the swirl being the most famous one) on their laptop or T-Shirts, for
example?

And third, probably the most important one, merchandising is a way to
gather resources to further Debian development, sponsoring various
activities like Bug Squashing Parties [3] or Sprints [4]. Remember,
Debian is a volunteer project and thus sometime it needs to find funds
on its own.

[3]
[4]

Past, present and future

In the past, there were two different contact points for event- and
merchandising-related activities: they were the events@d.o and
merchandise@d.o email addresses, respectively. This setup was no more
reliable, especially if considering that most of the time the people
contacting merchandise@d.o were the same guys who were organizing a
booth, thus contacting events@d.o.

You probably know that there was also a Debian Marketing team [5], given
that in the past there were official delegations for marketing reasons
[6]. Way before that, however, the Debian Publicity team was created
with the intent to better communicate with the outside world [7].

At some point during last year it was clear that this fragmentation
(events@d.o, merchandise@d.o, Marketing and Publicity teams) was
worsening the situation and thus our resources were re-organized: first,
the Marketing team was merged into the Publicity team [8] and, second,
the Publicity team sent a clear message to the world, they were still
alive and kicking [9].

Finally, during various (in)formal discussions at different events
(e.g. the Debian Merchandise BoF at DebConf11 [10]), we decided it was
time to deal with the last bit of publicity: merchandising. Thus, the
event handling in Debian received two Christmas gifts [11]: the first
one is the addition of two new members (Francesca Ciceri and yours
truly) and the second one is the merging between the events@d.o and
merchandise@d.o contact points.

This announcement explains the overall infrastructure behind the event
team and how to obtain the best from its work.

Webpages on www.debian.org
==

The canonical webpage is at [12]: everyone can find there information
about forthcoming events (of any kind, from booth to keysigning) and
also practical information if they are the ones running the event.

[12]

While the overall pages still reflect the current situation, they will
be reviewed and updated. The latter will be particularly done on the
"material and merchandise" page [13], which must be connected to the
"general" merchandise page at [14].

[13]
[14]

Submitting an event
===

This is the easiest part: whenever you know of any event Debian is
present, simply send an email in English to [15].
We will then do all the necessary steps to find someone willing to
participate/coordinate the Debian presence and announce the event to the
appropriate debian-events-* mailing lists [16][17][18][19], if not
already done.

Bug#613821: packages.d.o: Similar package link should not leave suite

Hi,

the links to related packages unter “Similar packages” lead to the
search result page listing occurences of the similar packages in all
suites. I would find it more natural and convenient if it would go to
that package’s page of the current suit (if available there). I
sometimes browser around using these links, and having to klick on
“unstable” over and over again seems to be avoidable.

Greetings,
Joachim

Bug#613832: www.debian.org: Debian sister association in the merchandise page

Noted, but I still need to acquaint myself with WML [3], if someone from
the Webmaster team wants to quickly fix it, please go on.

Yesterday, while reviewing debian-www@ spam [4] I found out something
related which should be taken care of when we are going to restructure
that page [5]. No flames, please.

Again, no flames, please.

That being said, it does not matter who is on the board and who is not
and for those who do not know that already, I am the current debian.ch
president.

Yes, debian.ch *is* a special case, no matter what other people say. It
is a special case exactly as any other *official* Debian sister
association.

Yes, I agree that we need a special case for these sister association,
but *only* if, as Adrian already wrote in his reply, the money that they
own is under the authority of the Debian project.

Thx, bye,
Gismo / Luca

I'm not completely sure to have understand your request.
If you're asking for a further entry for vendors, with a statement of which
part of the income goes to Debian (and/or if a part of the income goes to
Debian), IMO we can add it.

In that case, my patch would be something like the attached ones (for now I've
added data about proceeds only for debian.ch - in the patch - if we'll all
agree on it I'll collect data also about others vendors).

Note that as I'm not a native english speaker the statements added in the
patch need a proofread.

So, what you think about it?

Cheers,
Francesca

Small inconsistency on debian website (ports page)

2011-02-17 Thread Holger Wansing
Hello,

while translating the file ../ports/index.wml, I noticed the
following:

In line 33 of the english file, I read:
-
To prove this, we have our first three fledgling non-Linux based
ports, listed at the bottom of this page.
-

But at that bottom of the page, there are only two ports listed:
Debian GNU/Hurd and Debian GNU/NetBSD.
So, only two, now three.

Greetings

Holger

Debian GNU/NetBSD alpha and Debian GNU/NetBSD i386 are distinct ports;
together with Hurd, that makes three.

In the past, that were:
- Debian GNU/Hurd
- Debian GNU/NetBSD.
- Debian GNU/kFreeBSD

That's where the "three" came from. Debian GNU/kFreeBSD was moved out of
that chapter recently.

Yes, I think the patch shows the direction I had in mind. Not sure if it
should say for debian.ch (and other such organisations, if they should come
to be listed here) "the vendor is a Debian organisation" instead of "gives
all proceeds to Debian" - debian.ch does have official status.

(As Luca said: this is not to single out debian.ch. There may be other
organsations with similar status that do their own merchandising -- Debian
UK? -- and the same holds for them, too.)

How to overclock the board to the attachment from Windows?

You should telnet from the floppy disk and from the tools menu inside
Netscape you either never have to log from the POP3 miditower, or can't
debug a clock of a OpenGL file of a software of a BIOS in order to
explore the editor.
