Debian Mirror ftp.solnet.ch
Hello I want to report that the Debian mirror ftp.solnet.ch and debian.mirror.solnet.ch are removed. Today I wrote a mail to solnet because I use this mirror. They told me that the contact with Debian is broken off and so they decided to remove the mirror. So please update the data on the Debian mirror list. You can find the entrys under secondary mirrors / CH Switzerland. Bug#285675: www.debian.org: Sponsor image the one for xs4all on many mirrors.
Package: www.debian.org Severity: important It seems the .nl (xs4all) logo is showing up at the place of the mirror sponsor place for some of the other mirrors. Overview: .au doesn't have a logo .at good .br xs4all .bg good .cn Not working .fr good (xs4all, .nl IP address) .de good (general picture) .hk good (general picture) .id good .it xs4all .jp good (general picture) .nl good (xs4all) .ru good (general picture) .sa good .es good .ua good .uk good www.debian.org itself is the "United states" mirror, but has the IP address of the .nl mirror, just as the .fr mirror. So basicly .br and .it need to checked, and .au needs to have their picture fixed. Kurt

The problem with Knoppix-based distros is that there so many of them that it's quite impossible to list them all. Also, the idea of the 'children distributions' page, which should maybe be renamed to 'derived distributions', is to list Debian-based distros, not products based in things based in Debian. This is the problem with smooth upgrades, one does not notice when things change ;) As there have been no complaints so far, I guess that it is time to go further and now propose navigation/layout/accessibility changes to see if we can improve the current web site. But if you are using different colors than that provided by CSS, you may do a screenshot, so I can find the problem. If it is that hrline, It may be hidden in css. I made patches (20041214) in http://www.witch.westfalen.de/debian/diff/ But I want you all to look at one third page with page menu provided: http://www.witch.westfalen.de/debian/dwww/devel/index2.en.html The menu allows quicker navigation to the parts. What I do not know: I made that changes in the english subdir. How can that, if applied go to the other languages? Or in other words: How can that be applied correctly to the tree? - As far as I can see, it does not affect (negative or positive) the other languages. But some parts of the page can be done automatically (eg. building menu). greetings Jutta -- http://www.witch.westfalen.de http://witch.muensterland.org

For the accessibility issue I am already asking in the appropriate mailing list. In addition I got a very good but short free online book from Mark Pilgrim's website, where he has five example people with different disabilities. - There is missed something to skip over the menu - A menu at the bottom of page could be useful, too - On large pages, there could be something like "back to top" - Tables need a TH, if not existing - Is there a summary in all tables which are not for layout? I am still trying to find more information about aural CSS usage. I do not know, if there is something, I can install to test that. Braille is unreadable for most of us and expensive as other hardware supplies would be. There we need the help of those using it. And we have to try to see lynx like they to: word by word and line by line. Then we can imagine some of the needs (eg. skipping over the menu on the homepage to go to the content). But to skip over they have to know, what to skip over... What we have to realize: If we want full accessibility, with lynx the pages cannot look the same as people are used to, even if there are no changes in graphical browsers. Beside that I will try to make alternate stylesheets: For printouts and for people with disabilities. Here are two remarks/complaints: - the CD pages don't validate any more (http://people.debian.org/~alfie/validate/en) with many errors like: Line 127, character 3: document type does not allow element "P" here; missing one of "APPLET", "OBJECT", "MAP", "IFRAME", "BUTTON" start-tag (I don't know if this is related or not) - the title of every page (f.e. http://www.debian.org/intro/about) is now centered whereas it was aligned on the left before. It seems to be less readable to me. Fred

I think that the web site could be improved. It's annoying to have people volunteer periodically to redesign the web site, but they shouldn't be insulted. Rather, it would be more constructive to refer them to positive examples, such as the recent CSS work by Jutta, Denis, and Frank. -- Matt
