note for translators of distrib/books.wml
Hi, Don't translate the attribute in the tag of books.wml, just leave it as it is. It will be translated in your language automatically, assuming you've edited the slices in the language_names template. The Spanish and Italian translators made this mistake already, which I fixed, so I'm mailing the list now and have put a README in that directory. -- Digital Electronic Being Intended for Assassination and Nullification
More on the security pages translation mess...
A quick check gives that at least the following files contain English-specific texts: 2201.data 2217.data 2328.data 2605.data 2612.data 2619.data 2628.data 2728.data 2812.data 2821.data 2902a.data 2910.data 2911.data 20001008.data 20001009.data 20001013a.data 20001013.data 20001014a.data 20001014.data 2000a.data 2000.data 20001112.data 20001118a.data 20001122b.data 20001122.data dsa-029.data dsa-046.data dsa-047.data dsa-048.data dsa-049.data dsa-050.data And this was only a quick check, and only of year 2000 and 2001 (I haven't checked 1999). There are also a number of border-line cases (for instance, the only English-specific things in dsa-050.data is the use of `' as quote marks, something which isn't used in Swedish or Norwegian typography, I didn't include texts with other hard-coded English typography). Either: 1. Fix this in a good way or 2. Revert the changes. This is a matter that has been discussed plenty of times for many years now (take a look at the GNU Translation Project's pt_PT mail archives). I was always a supporter of joint translations and a unified effort on this translations (I even once proposed droping the portuguese 'archive' translation for the brazilian one, if they dropped the 'mouse 'stuff, etc). In the end, things can't me made this way; I now believe that translations should be done separatly, at least when there are many ppl from each nation involved (when there are few ppl there is no need to divide the efforts). As Carlos said, brazilians will reject utterly 'file' and 'mouse' translations done in Portugal, as portugese ppl will reject utterly the brazilian way of translating things (generally using a new version of an english word when there is one already in portugese, e.g. 'conetar'/'ligar', etc.). In the end, it is better to divide efforts, at least when someone raises the issue like Carlos did (and did well).
