Bug#59947: www.debian.org: put some useful links on the search page

Since the search page still requests we "be patient", perhaps it
would be useful to link to other working debian searches from
http://www.debian.org/search :

I notice that you added the info to devel/HOWTO_translate instead of
devel/website/uptodate . Could you add it there?

the stuff you need for being a debian developer

possible anymore.

This is indeed feasible, WMk could produce a fragment of Makefile
containing dependencies. But WMk does not know how to read it, so you
have to run make.
Note that i have never had any feedback on those dependency issues, so
this is still experimental.

Another (major) drawback of WMk is that the -A and -F flags only apply
to files, not dirs. There is actually no way to skip scanning a subdir.

Another idea is to use the VPATH feature of GNU make, but it does not
work.

IMHO you should stay with Makefiles since WMk is not flexible enough for
your needs. But if some people have suggestions on how to improve WML
and WMk, i will be glad to discuss with them.

Just an idea:

Build them to the local translation directory, and then have a global
Makefile that recurses into all directories and copies the files to the
right place? That Makefile could also be the one that starts the wml
processing.

FWD: packages

Dear Joey Hess,

I like the Debian News feature and read it regularly. Thanks
for the work you do.

I have one comment that I think would help the web site be better
but I do not know the work involved. It may also be that the information
is already there and I don't know how to access it. I like the list
of new packages that is included each newsletter but find the brief
description fustrating. My natural reaction is to click on the link to
the package. When I do that I go to the package page and it gives me
a list of dependencies and where to download the package. Is it possible
to add a link to the documentation for the code or to a more complete
description? I dislike having to download the package just to see if I am
interested in using it.

To be more explicit in the current newsletter is the package description:

unison: A file-synchronization tool for Unix and Windows

I am at a loss on how to find more information about this package without
downloading the package and installing it.

Thanks
Mark Sutton

BTW, is devel/HOWTO_translate.wml and devel/HOWTO_work.on.website.wml still
used? If not, shouldn't they be deleted, and links adjusted to point to
/devel/website/index.wml ?

I don't know what page he looked at, but the package pages such as e.g.

http://www.debian.org/Packages/unstable/base/dpkg.html

display the full description, along with the short one.

I guess what he meant was that the 'long' description is still not enough,
and he would like to see the whole package's documentation online.

I have already changed most of the links to point to devel/website/ .
It is a good idead to wait a few weeks after making changes in links
to give people a chance to find the new one. Yeah, I could forward,
or put text in the old file telling of the new loc, but I'm lazy. :)

Anyway, it is about time to remove the old versions. I'll also double
check for any links to the old loc.

Exactly. If the description doesn't give enough usefule information,
then a bug should be filed against the package. Ripping packages
apart to grab arbitrary files(*) is out of the question, IMO.

(*)I don't consider the copyright or changelogs to be arbitrary files.
