Debian web-master, if we could just give ownership of a directory,
say, /releases/{slink,potato}/reports to John, I would
appreciate it and John would.

They emailed us so I thought it would be nice to paste the email they
sent. This is the only time I did it. Something more intuitive is

We currently have something that pushes events that happen in the past
into links by year. Events that are in the future appear on the main
page. At first I wanted to have future events hidden as well, but after
thinking about how long it takes to plan an event our current method is
better then hiding the future.

What do you think?

upstream concerns

1999-07-26 Thread Francesco Tapparo
I'm maintaining scwm; Greg Badros, an upstream author, contacted me about
the page http://www.debian.org/Bugs/db/pa/lscwm.html. This page is a bit
misleading:

"Maintainer for scwm is Francesco Tapparo <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>. "

He would like better something as:
"Scwm is written by Greg J. Badros and Maciej Stachowiak.
Scwm's home web site is: scwm.mit.edu.
The maintainer for the Debian scwm package is Francesco Tapparo..."

and links to the upstream scwm page.

I agree with Greg. So I think would be very useful if the script generating
the pages would be updated to properly use an "Upstream Maintainer/s" and an
"Upstream Web Page" fields in the packages.
Is this feasible or it's hard? I'm not sure I've the needed skillful for
the job (I do'nt master html), but I can try.

cheers

It is well understood that 'maintainer' in the above refers to the
person who maintains the Debian package.

> and links to the upstream scwm page.

We have wanted the ability to easily create links to the upstream
maintainers site for ages. Unfortunately, we don't currently have a
mechanism for easily finding this info. Until that happens, such links
won't be created automatically. :(

If the upstream author would like links added to the description
(which are simply taken from the description the maintainer writes),
then he should ask the package maintainer.

BTW, many authors of software like our current system so that bug reports
get filtered through the package maintainer. The maintainer can then
filter packaging problems from the reports so the author doesn't get
burdened with Debian specific problems.

As stated above, it is simply a matter of being able to find the info.
Actually putting the information on the web page is trivial. The fields
you describe don't exist. I have asked many times for a way to
unambiguously access such info, but to no avail (adding it to the Packages
files is not the way to go. They are too big already).

There is no Upstream anything in packages.. atleast not normally. There
has been talk about adding those tag lines but nothing has ever been
settled.

The other thought.. the bug pages were not designed for giving out that
sort of information. If a person wants to know, they can (and should) go
to the copyright file in /usr/doc.. that's what the file is for. It might
be possible to make a small change: say "Debian Maintainer for..." instead.

The final problem is who "owns" the BTS output. It's
[EMAIL PROTECTED] The WWW people have little control over the BTS.

I looked at the cover page for wml. I am not sure wether it is
well suited. Probably yes. The pages are mostly very long lists.
They are generated by overly-complicated perl scripts. The links
at top and bottom could be standard. They are added by hand
at this point (I thinkd Adam diC. did it).
Unfortunatley, I don't want to take the time now to convert the
pages. I don't know if I can find the time before the next release.

In the interim, the easiest solution would be to give me
write access to a directory, and I can update it manually every
week.

Is it ok if we give John CVS access? He can then check in all the
files he wants under the releases directory. I'll even create the
Makefile(s) needed to install the files.

As far as wml goes, it isn't essential, but it doest give the
web site a consistent look. Also, if the look of the pages
change, the pages are updated automatically. All he needs to
do is the following for every page:

  #use wml::debian::template title="TITLE OF PAGE"
  BODY_OF_PAGE

No , , or tags are needed. :)

How does this sound?
