Bug#698329: ITP: sos -- This set of tools is designed to provide information to support organizations

2013-01-17 Thread Andreas Tille
Hi Adam,

thanks for your ITP. I'd (strongly) recommend using a less generic
name. Why not sticking to the upstream choice "sosreport"?

BTW, after reading the description twice I totally fail to tell what
this package might really do. After reading the very short description
on the github page I wonder how this might fit together at all.

For instance please define or give examples for things like
"organisations", "plugins", "report", "software packages" because I
somehow have the feeling that these terms are used in different context
than I'm usually doing.

Kind regards

   Andreas.

Bug#698258: ITP: python-charade -- universal encoding detector for Python 2 and Python 3

if Python 3 support is the only reason why it was forked, note that we
already have python3-chardet in Debian. Are there any other advantages?

can requests use chardet?

 The Linux kernel for x86 CPUs no longer decodes and logs recoverable
 Machine Check Exception (MCE) events to the kernel log on its own.
 .
 Instead, the MCE data is kept in a buffer which can be read from userspace
 via the /dev/mcelog device node.
 .
 You need this tool to collect and decode those events; it will log the decoded
 MCE events to syslog.

Bug#612297: Review package plz

2013-01-17 Thread Willem van den Akker
Hi Alexander,

It looks like it is not needed for upload permissions.
However Lintian is complaining about the mailing list address of the
team.
In that case the uploaders field must be filled in.

http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/developers-reference/pkgs.html#collaborative-maint

Documentation and tools not yet up-to-date with the new guidelines ;)
Correct me if I am wrong.

@all
I have made all necessary changes. Package builds fine. Can somebody
check the package?
I will make changes if needed, otherwise please upload ;)

Greetings,
Willem

Bug#698378: RFH: libvorbisidec

2013-01-17 Thread Daniel Kahn Gillmor
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

I'm low on time to work on libvorbisidec (tremor) and would love some
assistance. In particular, the following things would be helpful:

 * tracking upstream -- they make no explicit releases, and their
   mailing list is mostly silent. as you can see from the fact that
   the new version is uploaded as an NMU, i'm very behind here.

 * verifying functionality and reporting bugs -- for example, i've
   seen crashes of mpd on armel systems when using the new version of
   libvorbisidec, but haven't had the time or resources to nail down
   exactly what is going wrong.

Sorry to be slacking on this, i'd love to have some help.

As upstream maintainer of Dosage, I have handed the project over to
Bastian Kleineidam. While I could continue to maintain the Debian
package myself, I don't have any particular interest in doing so thus I
propose to hand over Debian maintainership as well (as discussed by
email elsewhere).

Bug#698389: RFP: dr14-tmeter -- Analyze the dynamic range of your music.

2013-01-17 Thread Martin Dosch
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: dr14-tmeter
  Version : 1.0.12
  Upstream Author : I couldn't find the authors name
* URL :
http://dr14tmeter.scienceontheweb.net/index.php?title=Main_Page
* License : GNU GPLv3
  Programming Lang: Python
  Description : Analyze the dynamic range of your music.

Introduction to DR14 T.meter

DR14 T.meter is a free and opens source command line tool for computing the
Dynamic Range of your music according to the procedure used in the off-line
meter released by the Pleasurize Music Foundation.

This tool is very useful to measure how is loud your music and for
understanding that a good quality album always has also a good dynamic, and
it's also useful for understanding the effects of the so called loudness war.

Dr14 t.meter is released under the terms of the GNU GPLv3 license and is
intended for the Linux users that can not use the Windows application released
by the Pleasurize Music Foundation or the plugin for Foobar2000.

* Package name: sosreport
  Version : 2.3.1
  Upstream Author : Adam Stokes
* URL : https://github.com/sosreport/sosreport
* License : GPL2+
  Programming Lang: Python
  Description : A tool for taking a snapshot of a system's
properties at given point of time.

This set of tools provides end users with the ability to take a snapshot
of their system customizable and _automated_ through plugins. A snapshot
of a system consists of but not limited too Filesystem layout, installed
packages, application configurations. Additional mechanisms are
available to print out reports based on rulesets that allow end users to
preemptively check for existing bug reports based on analyzed logs and
common configurations. One of the common use cases for this application
is when an end user is working with another person in an attempt to
troubleshoot an issue and that person would like to see an overall
layout of the end user's current system with any relevant application
configurations/logs. This application proves to be very beneficial in
large organizations/enterprises where you may have a technical team that
provides support for any number of customers/clients/end users.
Sosreport is also multi-distribution aware which already provides
support for Fedora and Debian/Ubuntu. Sosreport also differs from
applications such as abrt and apport which tend to concentrate more on
detecting and analyzing application crashes.

Thank you
Adam

Bug#476284: bullet package name/numbering

2013-01-17 Thread Scott Howard
Hello, late to the party but wanted to put in a comment regarding
library package naming/versioning. Please ignore this if it has
already been discussed and i missed it in the thread)

If your library belongs to a package that doesn't believe in sane
SONAME version numbering, but instead releases based on version
numbers that have nothing to do with binary compatibility, it is
sometimes best to use the -release LDFLAG:

>From the autotools book (but you can adjust it for whatever build
system you want) [1]

%-snip-%
`-release'
On occasion, it is desirable to encode the release number of a
library into its name. By specifying the release number with this
option, libtool will build a library that does this, but will break
binary compatibility for each change of the release number. By
breaking binary compatibility this way, you negate the possibility of
fixing bugs in installed programs by installing an updated shared
library. You should probably be using `-version-info' instead.

libshell_la_LDFLAGS = -release 27

The above fragment might create a library called
`libshell-27.so.0.0.0' for example.

%-snip-%

So, perhaps, libbulletcollision2.81 should really be:

libbulletcollision-2.81.so.0.0.0

and package name "libbulletcollission-2.81" not
"libbulletcollision2.81" (note the dash and number is in the name,
the version will be appended on to it. This will, however, force
everything to be rebuilt whenever upstream releases a new version.

Bug#698258: ITP: python-charade -- universal encoding detector for Python 2 and Python 3

2013-01-17 Thread Daniele Tricoli
Hello Piotr,
thanks for your comments!

On Thursday 17 January 2013 12:38:12 Piotr Ożarowski wrote:

The Python 3 support is not what made me think about packaging python-
charade: right now python3-requests 0.12.1-1 is using python3-chardet.

Note that I missed, when I sent the ITP, that the following is true for the
development version. I took project information from the git but I missed
that the default branch is the development one:

Inside clean and isolated virtualenv:

Python 2.7.3 (default, Jan  2 2013, 13:56:14)
[GCC 4.7.2] on linux2
Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.
>>> import charade
>>> data = open('bom-utf-16-be.srt', 'rb').read()
>>> charade.detect(data)
{'confidence': 1.0, 'encoding': 'UTF-16BE'}

Python 3.2.3 (default, Sep 10 2012, 11:22:57)
[GCC 4.7.1] on linux2
Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.
>>> import charade
>>> data = open('bom-utf-16-be.srt', 'rb').read()
>>> charade.detect(data)
{'confidence': 1.0, 'encoding': 'UTF-16BE'}

Here, instead, the system wide Debian python-chardet:

Python 2.7.3 (default, Jan  2 2013, 13:56:14)
[GCC 4.7.2] on linux2
Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.
>>> import chardet
>>> data = open('bom-utf-16-be.srt', 'rb').read()
>>> chardet.detect(data)
{'confidence': 1.0, 'encoding': 'UTF-16BE'}

Python 3.2.3 (default, Sep 10 2012, 11:22:57)
[GCC 4.7.1] on linux2
Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.
>>> import chardet
>>> data = open('bom-utf-16-be.srt', 'rb').read()
>>> chardet.detect(data)
{'confidence': 0.5, 'encoding': 'windows-1252'}

Is it worth backporting to python-chardet? Right now charade doesn't differ
to much from it but in future it might be.

> > The package will be maintained under the umbrella of the DPMT and it's

Right now, yes, since the two codebase don't differ much. requests is
currently embedding charade 1.0.1, so there should be no problems.

Maybe I can just update requests using python-chardet for now, but I'm a
bit worried about that missed detection on Python 3.

What do you suggest?

Kind regards,
