Bug#657405: dependency on closure-compiler?

2012-12-16 Thread Thomas Koch
Control: block -1 by 555683

I found the closure-compiler in mediagoblins codebase, so I add a dependency
here to the RFP of closure-compiler.

Or would it be possible to build mediagoblin without the closure compiler?

Bug#686453: [RFC] First release of spl-dkms and zfs-linux packages for Debian

2012-12-16 Thread Darik Horn
> I removed from the control files lot of replaces/conflicts that didn't make
> sense to me.

These dependency changes break upgrades from version 0.5, which is
technically the current stable release. Upgrades across ABI revisions
in the 0.6 series are also broken.

Additionally, the libavl conflict still matters. Not understanding
something is not a reason to delete it.

> Perhaps for Ubuntu make sense (don't know).

No, it applies to all distributions in the Debian family.

> One question that floats over my mind is related to the name of the packages
> libzfs-dev libzfs1 and zfsutils. On Debian/kFreeBSD there are packages with
> the same name.

The pkg-zfs packages are named like kFreeBSD, Illumos, and Solaris so
that third party software has basic control compatibility and can be
more easily shared between platforms.

(Further inline quotes are from the two commit messages.)

> Strip from spl-dkms all files not related to kernel modules.

Why are you removing copyright attributions like the AUTHORS file?
This could upset ZoL contributors and cause legal exposure.

> Rewrite postinst helper that ensures that /etc/hostid is valid and will
> remain constant across reboots.

The __BYTE_ORDER__ test is interesting. I will likely add it to pkg-spl.

However, randomizing the hostid violates the principle of least
astonishment because it causes a zpool.cache mismatch that breaks
subsequent imports, and it can break license management for non-Debian
software.

Stabilizing the hostid is safe, but changing the hostid is unsafe for
the same reason that randomizing a missing hostname is wrong.

> Use pristine-tar and create the package from tarballs released from upstream.

The pristine-tar branch already exists in pkg-spl and pkg-zfs. Using
the pristine-tar facility is certainly correct, but not currently
practical for doing the frequent releases that ZoL users expect.

> Don't ignore all files (--extend-diff-ignore='.*').

This is a convenience for me. It makes continuous integration easier.

> Fix clean target and use dh_autoreconf

This breaks backports for Lucid (and its derivatives) because
dh-autoreconf is a non-main package on those systems. Keeping
compatibility with all officially supported Ubuntu variants is
worthwhile and something that I want to do.

> Update debian/watch to track upstream official release tarballs

Is the Github redirector fully obsolete? (nb:
http://wiki.debian.org/debian/watch/)

The pkg-spl and pkg-zfs watch files were added after an earlier
private ITP review.

> Strip from zfs-dkms all files not related to kernel modules.
> Clean debian directory for unneeded *.docs
> (copyright notices should be added to debian/copyright properly)

The OPENSOLARIS.LICENSE file should be unmodified and bundled in every
ZFS package, even if the CDDL is duplicated in the debian/copyright
file.

Modifying or omitting Oracle legal notices will attract Oracle
lawyers. Saving less than 64 kilobytes of boilerplate per
installation is just not worth the risk.

> Add zfs-linux metapackage for convenience to install all ZFS

Consider naming this debian-zfs to fit the naming convention of other
meta packages already in distribution, and to better accommodate the
kFreeBSD platform in case the meta package can be shared.

Big or important source packages do not typically provide their own
meta. Doing this makes it more difficult for large sites to do local
overrides and customization. (And it follows that I should rename the
ubuntu-zfs source package to something like meta-ubuntu-zfs for better
conformance.)

> ensure dependencies are also always updated to the right version.

This reintroduces a dkms ordering bug where the zfs build races the
spl build. Notice how the BUILD_DEPENDS directive is handled by dkms.

> General cleaning of files not needed (dracut/sudoers.d/...)

These things were submitted by new ZoL contributors. Stripping them
discourages further contribution from these people.

I added this kind of nagging to some private builds and got negative
feedback. YMMV. Consider disabling second-class architectures entirely
because Debian publishes updates very slowly between major releases.

Double-check that the debconf can handle a non-default
/etc/dkms/framework.conf file. The "/boot/config-$(uname -r)" test
could be problematic.

> Add /etc/init.d/zfs and remove /etc/init.d/{zfs-mount,zfs-share}.
> There is not need at all for two different initscripts.

This races on systems that have event driven init stacks like upstart
or systemd, and it can break in a regular sysv init stack because
networking can come online a long time after local storage is ready.

What happens if /etc/fstab has a legacy line that causes an automatic
import before

Description : module for operations awaiting completion

A Future object represents an operation that is currently in progress, or
has recently completed. It can be used in a variety of ways to manage the
flow of control, and data, through an asynchronous program.

Some futures represent a single operation and are explicitly marked as ready
by calling the done or fail methods. These are called "leaf" futures here,
and are returned by the new constructor.

Other futures represent a collection sub-tasks, and are implicitly marked as
ready depending on the readiness of their component futures as required.
These are called "dependent" futures here, and are returned by the various
wait_* and need_* constructors.

It is intended that library functions that perform asynchonous operations
would use Future objects to represent outstanding operations, and allow their
calling programs to control or wait for these operations to complete. The
implementation and the user of such an interface would typically make use of
different methods on the class. The methods below are documented in two
sections; those of interest to each side of the interface.

a specific test group only. Test::Builder is used under the hood for TAP

Meta programming is becoming more and more popular. The popularity of Meta
programming comes from the fact that many problems are made significantly
easier. There are a few specialized Meta tools out there, for instance
Class:MOP which is used by Moose to track class metadata.

Meta::Builder is designed to be a generic tool for writing Meta objects.
Unlike specialized tools, Meta::Builder makes no assumptions about what
metrics you will care about. Meta::Builder also mkaes it simple for others to
extend your meta-object based tools by providing hooks for other packages to
add metrics to your meta object.

If a specialized Meta object tool is available to meet your needs please use
it. However if you need a simple Meta object to track a couple metrics, use
Meta::Builder.

Description : Perl module for quick side-effect free mocking of objects
and classes

Mock::Quick is here to solve the current problems with Mocking libraries.

There are a couple Mocking libraries available on CPAN. The primary
problems with these libraries include verbose syntax, and most
importantly side-effects. Some Mocking libraries expect you to mock a
specific class, and will unload it then redefine it. This is
particularly a problem if you only want to override a class on a
lexical level.

Mock::Quick provides a declarative mocking interface that results in a
very concise, but clear syntax. There are separate facilities for
mocking object instances, and classes. You can quickly create an
instance of an object with custom attributes and methods. You can also
quickly create an anonymous class, optionally inhereting from another,
with whatever methods you desire.

Mock::Quick also provides a tool that provides an OO interface to
overriding methods in existing classes. This tool also allows for the
restoration of the original class methods. Best of all this is a
localized tool, when your control object falls out of scope the original
class is restored.

Bug#696101: ITP: libxs-object-magic-perl -- module for opaque, extensible XS pointer backed objects using sv_magic

2012-12-16 Thread gregor herrmann

* Package name: libxs-object-magic-perl
  Version : 0.4
  Upstream Author : Florian Ragwitz
* URL : https://metacpan.org/release/XS-Object-Magic/
* License : Artistic or GPL-1+
  Programming Lang: Perl
Description : module for opaque, extensible XS pointer backed objects
using sv_magic

XS::Object::Magic provides a way of associating structs with Perl space
objects designed to supercede Perl's builtin "T_PTROBJ" with something that
is designed to be:

  * extensible: The association of the pointer using "sv_magicext" can be
done on any data type, so you can associate C structs with any
representation type. This means that you can add pointers to any object
(hand coded, Moose or otherwise), while still having instance data in
regular hashes.
  * opaque: The C pointer is neither visible nor modifiable from Perl space.
This prevents accidental corruption which could lead to segfaults using
"T_PTROBJ" (e.g. "$$ptr_obj = 0").

While Cucumber can be thought of as a testing tool, the intent of
the tool is to support BDD. This means that the tests (plain text
feature descriptions with scenarios) are typically written before
anything else and verified by business analysts, domain experts, etc.
non technical stakeholders. The production code is then written
outside-in, to make the stories pass.

Bug#696038: ITP: compat-wireless-3.5.4 -- backported linux wireless drivers

2012-12-16 Thread Jayen Ashar
Hi kernel team,

I intend to package the stable versions of compat-wireless and
compat-drivers (when available) as module-assistant packages, starting
with compat-wireless 3.5.4. The reason I am using module-assistant
(instead of dkms) is so that embedded users of debian can compile &
distribute kernel module packages without needing a compiler on the
embedded device. I am starting with 3.5.4 because I have already
packaged it for my company and have tested it internally with the
squeeze kernel.

Thanks,
Jayen

This is not a reason to avoid DKMS, as you can use 'dkms mkdeb' to build
a package for installation elsewhere.

Since wheezy is now frozen, this cannot be added to wheezy and therefore
cannot be added to squeeze-backports either. So this will not be a very
effective way to help other squeeze users.

The official kernel package (linux-2.6/linux source package) does get
stable updates to extend hardware support, but not as many as I would
like. I would really like to see compat-drivers integrated into the
linux source package so users don't need to look for extra package or a
special installer. But we will need to ensure that there is adequate
regression testing whenever we update compat-drivers in stable.

Would you be interesting in working on this? It would help many more
users than a separate package.

Ben.

didn't know about mkdeb. will start looking at dkms (at least for our

Are you asking for work on adding it to linux-source, or doing some
testing? I'm not sure I could provide adequate testing on any version
other than the one's my company is running.
