Bug#655441: ITP: mma -- Musical MIDI Accompaniment

2012-01-11 Thread Joel Roth
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Joel Roth

* Package name: mma
  Version : 12.01
  Upstream Author : Bob van der Poel
* URL : http://www.mellowood.ca/mma
* License : GPL
  Programming Lang: Python
  Description : MMA - Musical MIDI Accompaniment

Musical MIDI Accompaniment, MMA, generates standard
MIDI files which can be used as a backup track for a
soloist.

It was written especially for me--I am an aspiring
saxophonist and wanted a program to "play" the piano and
drums so I could practice my jazz solos. With MMA I can
create a track based on the chords in a song, transpose it
to the correct key for my instrument, and play my very bad
improvisations until they get a bit better.

I also lead a small combo group which is always missing at
least one player. With MMA generated tracks the group can
practice and perform even if a rhythm player is missing.
This all works much better than I expected when I started to
write the program... so much better that I have used MMA
generated tracks for live performances with great success.

Around the world musicians are using MMA for practice,
performance and in their studios. Much more than ever
imagined when this project was started!

This ITP expresses the submitter's intention to package the
newest upstream version 12.01 for Debian, and to maintain
this package over the long term.

Any discussion WRT to resuscitating this package, is invited
by any interested parties, especially those involved with
packaging Python or multimedia applications for Debian.

Due to the multiplicity options for packaging Python apps
(distutils and friends) assistance of those with experience
in this area is requested to create a setup.py and modify the
app accordingly.

I intend to orphan the copher package. I no longer use the program and would
rather it is maintained by someone who can properly new uploads.

The package description is:
 Automates management of project releases on sourceforge, including uploading
 files, adding new releases, and editing existing releases.
 .
 copher can work with projects on SourceForge, RubyForge and LuaForge, and can
 take directions from the command line or from answer files.

This package is very low maintenance and ideally would be taken on by someone
who can get involved upstream too. Upstream is friendly but upstream activity
is scarce at the moment.

I am happy to provide ongoing sponsorship if it is required.

  Description : UHD - Universal Hardware Driver for Universal Software
Radio Peripherals

For those who remember the usrper application and libusrp* packages,
those days are behind us. The UHD library handles both the USB
attached USRP1 and ethernet connected USRP2 devices, and newer
devices. It replaces the old libusrp1* and libusrp2* stuff.

The good news is that the new firmware for the network attached
devices actually does UDP/IP - rather than the raw ethernet protocol
used by the libusrp2* drivers. Part of what makes that possible is
that the FPGA uses a DFSG free BSD style license for an embedded ZPU
processor. So here we have free software drivers communicating via
TCP/UDP to free hardware which is running embedded free software
compiled by a free modification to the free GNU Compiler Collection.

The bad news is that the older USB connected boards made use of FX2
USB hardware, and programming of that hardware requires the non-free
part of the sdcc compiler. In addition, actually instantiating a free
ZPU processor on a FPGA requires proprietary tools from the FPGA
manufacturer. Even the USRP1 source is closely tied to the proprietary
Altera tools. So the end result is that the generated firmware, even
though it comes from freely available and even DFSG free source code,
ends up being in Debian's contrib repository instead of main.

The ugly news is that firmware developer's "preferred form of the work
for making modifications to it" often includes proprietary
vendor-specific sections. Only natural, considering that the resulting
firmware will be used by that vendor's hardware. So here we have a
source package that defines a device/driver interface that is, on the
whole, free software. However, parts of the source are constrained by
the available proprietary vendor tools. So while modification is
allowed to support similar hardware with other vendors, some portions
of the source code are not useful for that task.

The UHD packages cover the same issues as the previous GNU Radio
packages. Perhaps one reason for the similarity is that so many of the
same people are involved in the development of both packages.

The Road ahead might include UHD driver support for openHPSDR project
hardware. This would be a milestone, and would demonstrate the
convergence of the GNU project GPL licensed gnuradio software and the
TAPR OHL (Open Hardware License) hardware pioneered by TAPR and the
openHPSDR project.

Thankfully, Carl and Larry agreed to relicense the file unter GPL2+ without
additional restrictions. I added their note with sanitized mail addresses to
the ITP - should be up there soon, dunno why its taking so long to accept my
mail.

I now plan to add that information to debian/copyright as well and possibly
create a patch for the file to change it to GPLv2 that I offer Ric Wheeler for
upstream inclusion.

That is unless someone advises me to handle this situation differently.

Thanks for help,

Hello!

Thankfully, Carl and Larry relicense lib_timing.c as GPL2+ without
restrictions.

I will put this information into debian/copyright as well and possibly create
a patch to change the licensing note in the source file that I send back
upstream to Ric Wheeler for inclusion in any possible future version of
fs_mark.

After a clarification requested by me:

Larry and I have nothing to do with fsmark, aside from the fact that
apparently
bits of lmbench were used to help develop it.

For the bits of lmbench that were used by fsmark, we are happy to give it a

This package was blocked by an upstream copyright problem, there was no
license defined and the copyright holder wasn't named.

Today I found the license specified as Apache License 2.0 on the project
home page, http://code.google.com/p/pyopenfst/

There is also a commit history there, pointing to "tmb...@gmail.com" as
project owner and "dhd...@gmail.com" as the only other committer. If
there is somebody interested in packaging this, one could write to these

Bug#655467: ITP: perp -- A persistent process supervisor

2012-01-11 Thread Sergiusz Pawlowicz
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Sergiusz Pawlowicz

* Package name: perp
  Version : 2.05
  Upstream Author : Wayne Marshall
* URL : http://b0llix.net/perp/
* License : BSD-2-clause-like
  Programming Lang: C89/posix
  Description : A persistent process supervisor

about
-

The perp package provides a set of daemons and utilities to reliably
start, monitor, log, and control a collection of persistent processes.

A "persistent process" is any program intended to be long-running,
highly available, and purpose critical. Also known and often described
as a "service", a persistent process normally provides some essential,
on-demand system service. Programs that serve email, domain name
queries, and http requests are all examples of services that are
normally run as persistent processes.

These are the programs that you want to start at system boot, and to
continue running for as long as the system itself. These are the
programs you need running in uninterrupted service, day and night,
forever and ever.

perp helps make sure that they do.

benefits

perp provides the following benefits:

 * easy, portable, platform-neutral service installation
 *   fast, asynchronous service startup
 * consistent, reliable service execution environment
 *   easy administration
 * reliable and complete logging facilities

perp is similar in purpose to the venerable daemontools program last
released in 2001, but provides a modern update with many advantages:

 * easy configuration: in place service activation and no symlinks!
 * single process: context switching for multiple supervisors is
eliminated
 * everthing administered in one place, /etc/perp
 *   service reset capability
 *   fully FHS compatible
 * colorized(!) service lister, readable timestamps...
 * no slashpackage, no slashcommand, no slashdoc...

Meanwhile, perp continues to share many of the positive attributes of
daemontools:

 *   small, portable, autoconf-less, standard C89/posix sources
 *   daemons never malloc()
 *   make(1) agnostic
 * links with dietlibc for small executables

And the author is even friendly!

I found this firmware is not loaded by a kernel driver anyway. See the last
message I sent to the bug report.

Bug#628997: gecko-mediaplyer: src/*.[cpp,h] copyright status

2012-01-11 Thread Sebastian Ramacher
Hi Kevin,

We're currently preparing the Debian package for gecko-mediaplayer 1.0.5 and
while adopting it, I wondered what's the copyright status of the source files in
src [1]. They only mention Mozilla's copyright information but not yours. So I
would like to ask you to clarify the status of these files.

Furthermore it would be nice if you could update the information in these files
for the next release.

Kind regards,

Eight months have passed and the popcon is even lower. Shall we go
ahead with the removal?

Bug#655513: RFP: vim-clang-complete -- Complete C, C++, Objective-C and Objective-C++ in Vim using Clang

2012-01-11 Thread Jan Hudec
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: vim-clang-complete
  Version : 1.8
  Upstream Author : Xavier Deguillard
* URL : http://www.vim.org/scripts/script.php?script_id=3302
* License : BSD-3 (some files come from LLVM, the relevant part of
license is also BSD-3, just with different names)
  Programming Lang: vim, python
  Description : Complete C, C++, Objective-C and Objective-C++ in Vim using
Clang
  Depends : python, clang
  Recommends  : libclang1
I suggest pre-defining the path to the library
(g:clang_library_path), but since it can only be used in
vim with python support, still needs to depend on clang.

This vim plugin uses clang to accurately complete C, C++ and Objective-C
code. It understands all C++03 and some C++11 constructs including complex
preprocessor expansions or heavily templated code. It can also highlight
errors as you type.

Since it uses C++ compiler to do the parsing, it is acurate except for
compiler-specific features of your regular compiler not supported by clang
(most gcc extensions are supported). It also does not need ctags or any other
database to be updated before it can complete newly declared constructs. Only
compiler flags (definitions and include paths) need to be provided.

It should be a normal (team) upload either by adding yourself as a
co-maintainer or debchange --team whatever you prefer.

Bug#637594: Please hold the upload of ding-libs for now

2012-01-11 Thread Timo Aaltonen

Hi!

  I've talked with Jonathan Carter (the packager) about the ding-libs
upload, and I believe we agree that the package should be held until a
newer version is ready for sponsoring.

The issue I see is that the -dev library names shouldn't have the soname
in them, and that there is a git-repo under collab-maint which is a
better base for the package. The diff currently is really just the
dev-package names, and we can get a -2 sponsored to the NEW queue if
possible? Or is the right procedure to drop the current one and reupload
a new -1?

respectfully,

t

Well, holding it back would be possible, but why? If there's no need to
have the package right now (apparently there isn't, or you wouldn't ask
to hold it back ;) rejecting it, so you can reupload a new -1 package
sounds like the nicer way. So I just rejected it.

Best regards,
  Alexander
