Bug#652745: About licenses

2011-12-27 Thread adrian15
It seems that there is an ongoing work on licenses rewriting so that
packaging does not have any problem with licenses.

Here there is the main thread:

http://groups.google.com/group/razor-qt/browse_thread/thread/98d84c6016c2bab4

It would be nice if someone could update this bug when the licenses
issue has been solved.

Bug#652745: QT versions?

2011-12-27 Thread adrian15
I have taken a look at Ubuntu versions and they depend on very new (from
the Debian point of view) QT packages.

Some days ago current Debian packages versions were:

Debian Stable branch:
 libqtcore4: 4:4.6.3-4
  Debian Unstable branch:
 libqtcore4: 4:4.7.3-8

Where should we find the minimal versions needed of qt stuff so that
razor-qt works? This url:

  https://github.com/Razor-qt/razor-qt/wiki/Dependencies
lack the version numbers in my opinnion.

The most important commands to configure DRBL is:
drblsrv
drblpush
and the most important command an system administrator will use is:
dcs

Do you want me to list all the commands an user might use?

Bug#649784: On dh_apparmor, and possibly other dh_* stuff in the future

2011-12-27 Thread Gergely Nagy
Hi!

As I mentioned earlier[1] in the bugreport, I had to work with more than
one package that could've used dh_apparmor, and that's at least one too
many for my taste. So I've been thinking about a way to resolve this
situation, and - if possible - avoid similar issues in the future,
without polluting the archive with various dh-* packages for no good
reason.

It's a shame that debhelper was modified and distributed as it was, and
I agree that doing so was (and remains) counter-productive, and
something that shouldn't have been done in the first place.

However, there are cases where a tool just doesn't make much sense in
debhelper proper - at least, not in the beginning (I can list a few
scenarios, if any of you is curious). When that happens, it can still be
submitted to debhelper for inclusion, but if it's not useful for Debian,
and possibly won't be for years to come, does including it in debhelper
proper make much sense?

I don't think so. BUT! That's no reason to fork debhelper, either. We
could have a debhelper-extras, or ubuntu-debhelper-extras or similar,
that collects the dh_* tools written for ubuntu or other derivatives,
that aren't generally useful for Debian (yet). Packages that need these,
be it a Debian package, or one from Ubuntu, or another derivative, could
build-depend on this package, and debhelper would remain compatible
between derivatives, so would the new package (as it would be uploaded
to Debian too, so the derivatives' packages can be built on Debian
itself, too).

And if and when any of the tools get mature and useful enough, they can
still be migrated to debhelper itself, would Joey accept them. This way,
debhelper won't be incompatible between distros, nor would be the
-extras package, and migration between the two would be reasonably easy.

We could start with dh_apparmor (since packaging a single tool like that
separately does not make much sense to me), and add others as the need
arises.

What do you all think?

I'm hoping this'd satisfy all parties: those who'd wish to add tools
that are - for one reason or the other - not acceptable in debhelper
yet, and those who want to see debhelper unchanged between derivatives.

This will be necessary sooner or later. However let us focus on most
important commands first.

When I inspect the code of sbin/drblsrv, I see the following lines:

# Source DRBL setting
. /opt/drbl/conf/drbl.conf

I will write a script to modify such lines (in any script) into

# Source DRBL setting
. /etc/drbl/drbl.conf

since files which provide system-wide settings should live in /etc, per
the FHS. The change will not propagate into your upstream development,
it will be part only of the debian package.

Do you think that such a general change might provide a consistent set
of scripts?

I wrote the attached files to output the manpage drblsrv.8, Would you
agree to review them and provide some feedback? You can view thr manpage
by typing "man -l drblsrv.8"

These files come with some suggestions:
- adding option -h/--help and -v/--version for the command
- documenting some strings output as diagnostics, documenting the exit
  status if it is useful,
- writing a minimal manual page for drbl.conf's contents
- documenting known bugs if any

These suggestions are consistent with debian's quality assurance team's
policy about manpages. They are not mandatory, but if we succeed in
implementing some of them, users will enjoy.

Thank you in advance for your feedback.

Best regards, Georges.

Then I shall write a manpage in docbook/xml format for drblsrv and
submit it to your review. Will you be kind enough to provide me feedback
about it?

Best regards, Georges.

If the "ABI" of the dh_* tools is considered stable and exportable, I have
no problem with this. If debhelper will change its "ABI" in the future,
then this separate package is going to be a pain to maintain.

Debhelper has had a stable, documented ABI for 12+ years;
there are numerous dh_* commands elsewhere in the archive.

I’d probably have chosen the Source name to also include GL, but thats
almost bikeshedding, so OK from my POV.

Yup, this is the reason I dared raising the option in the first
place. (Though, even if this weren't the case, I'd be up for helping
maintain such a package, but thankfully, doing so would be an easy job.)

So, if I understand it well, there is no opposition?

Then we "only" need a package name, possibly finding other scripts apart
from dh_apparmor (perhaps even poking the maintainers of various dh_*
scripts if they'd consider merging into a single thing), and a
maintainer (I'm willing to help with that, but the more the merrier,
especially if there's someone more versed in dh-land than I am).

biTStream is a set of C headers allowing a simpler access
to binary structures such as specified by MPEG, DVB, IETF,
 etc.
 .
If compared with libdvbpsi, biTStream is lower level, and
more efficient: fewer memory allocations, fewer memory
copies. It also features a better separation between layers
 and specifications.

Description : Fast native row fetching for Sequel postgres adapter

sequel_pg overwrites the inner loop of the Sequel postgres adapter row
fetching code with a C version. The C version is significantly faster
(2-6x) than the pure ruby version that Sequel uses by default.

Sequel is a simple, flexible, and powerful SQL database access toolkit
for Ruby.

DRBL provides a diskless or systemless environment for client
machines. It works on Debian, Ubuntu, Mandriva, Red Hat, Fedora,
CentOS and OpenSuSE. DRBL uses distributed hardware resources and
makes it possible for clients to fully access local hardware. It also
includes Clonezilla, a partition and disk cloning utility similar to
 Symantec Ghost(TM) or True Image(TM).

Description : Efficient XS-Based n-gram spectrum analysis module

n-Gram analysis is a field in textual analysis which uses sliding window
character sequences in order to aid topic analysis, language
determination and so on. The n-gram spectrum of a document can be used
to compare and filter documents in multiple languages, prepare word
prediction networks, and perform spelling correction.

This module provides an efficient XS-based implementation of n-gram spectrum
analysis.

Bug#653428: RFP: libapache2-mod-ruid2 -- Apache2 module to run all httpd process under the owner permissions.

2011-12-27 Thread Alessandro De Zorzi
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: libapache2-mod-ruid2
  Version : 0.9.4
  Upstream Author : Kees Monshouwer
* URL : http://sourceforge.net/projects/mod-ruid/
* License : Apache License V2.0
  Programming Lang: C
Description : Apache2 module to run all httpd process under the owner
permissions.

With this module, all httpd process run under user's access right, not nobody
or apache.
mod_ruid2 is similar to mod_suid2, but has better performance than mod_suid2
because it
doesn`t need to kill httpd children after one request. It makes use of kernel
capabilites
and after receiving a new request suids again. If you want to run apache
modules, i.e.
WebDAV, PHP, and so on under user's right, this module is useful. Could be a
suphp
alternative.
