Bug#239518: GPL vs. OSL

2004-03-31 Thread Tomas Pospisek
AFAI can see elfutils is doubly licenced under GPL and/or OSL:

* two COPYING files - one for GPL other for OSL
* NEWS says:
  "[...]
   Version 0.91:
   [...]
libelf: change to GPL from OSL1 for now."
* elfutils.spec says:
  "[...]
   %changelog
   * Wed Jan  7 2004 Jakub Jelinek <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 0.91-2
   - macroized spec file for GPL or OSL builds"

Would you mind pointing me to some discussion of the problem, or
telling me why you think that the current state of elfutils represents a
problem?

Bug#230377: libdn, idn, punycode, perl

2004-03-31 Thread Peter Gervai
I see this two wnpp's are basically the same, shouldn't they be merged?

Apart from that I found a package called libnet-libidn-perl

which seems to be a correct interface to libidn (which is included in
debian), but seems not to be in the main archive (and not really getting
built). Thomas, is there a plan to include that in debian? Or is it there
somewhere but I'm too blind to see?

Thanks,
Peter

Bug#241214: RFP: python-chart -- Python library for creating high quality charts

2004-03-31 Thread Andreas Tille
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: python-chart
  Version : 1.35
  Upstream Author : Yasushi Saito <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
* URL : http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Yasushi_Saito/pychart/
* License : GPL
Description : Python library for creating high quality charts

PyChart is a Python library for creating high quality Encapsulated Postscript,
PDF, PNG, or SVG charts. It currently supports line plots, bar plots,
range-fill plots, and pie charts. Because it is based on Python, you can make
full use of Python's scripting power.

Some comparable projects are
 * Dislin.
Dislin does 3-D plots, but it's not as configurable or as pretty as pychart.
 * Ploticus.
Ploticus inspired PyChart most. It can produce a very pretty output, but
writing a script for Ploticus is incredibly cumbersome.
 * Gnuplot.
A long-time favorite of researchers. But its output is not up to publishing
   standard, in my opinion.

Yes there is, the package is already debianized anyway, and Matthias
Urlichs has also already contacted me about including it in Debian, he's
currently in the process of testing a slighlty bugfixed version (see
http://spaceship.berlios.de/index.php?page=idn.php, Version 0.06).

As far as I can see, the main thing to sort out is the uploading
process (I am not yet a Debian member/maintainer, but
want to be the maintainer for my package ;)

Oh great. I just figured out how that #$%@ makemaker works :) and compiled
it successfully (changing INSTALLDIRS to 'perl' instead of 'site'), bahh.

Well it's pretty easy, do as I used to do and get a sponsor. I can upload
your package, and probably Matthias can do that, too. You maintain it,
handle the bugs and praise the upstream. ;-) You apply for maintainership
and handle the package when you're in.

Sollte das nicht verständlicher "A Tool to design ..." heißen?

> Comments and a sponsor are welcome.

Ich bin sehr interessiert. Hier einige Anmerkungen:

,
| fakeroot debian/rules binary
| docbook-to-man primer3.sgml > primer3.1
| /bin/sh: docbook-to-man: command not found
| make: *** [primer3.1] Error 127
`

Bug#241260: O: xfce4-goodies -- Enhancements for the XFce4 Desktop Environment

2004-03-31 Thread Andrew Lau
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

Hi everyone,

I simply don't have time left to maintain XFce4 based packages anymore
due to uni and work commitments while work for the Debian GNOME
Maintainers team takes the bulk of my time donated to Debian.

The "Goodies for XFce" project (http://xfce-goodies.berlios.de/)
includes additional software and artwork that are related to the XFce
desktop, but not part of the official release.

The XFce4 Goodies collection currently consists of xfce4-artwork,
xfce4-battery-plugin, xfce4-clipman-plugin, xfce4-datetime-plugin,
xfce4-diskperf-plugin, xfce4-minicmd-plugin, xfce4-netload-plugin,
xfce4-notes-plugin, xfce4-showdesktop-plugin, xfce4-systemload-plugin
which are also orphaned (only going to file one WNPP report).

Currently there are trivial libtool RC bug fixes in need of attention
and there also about 3-4 other applets awaiting inclusion in the
collection. Anyone wishing to adopt these packages should be a regular
XFce4 user and can get well along with Martin Loschwitz (madkiss) who is
the XFce4 maintainer.

Thanks in advanced,
Andrew "Netsnipe" Lau

Bug#241260: O: xfce4-goodies -- Enhancements for the XFce4 Desktop Environment

If no one else wants to adopt them, I would like to get them fixed and updated.
As an XFce4 fanatic I wouldn't mind maintaining the goodies I use daily (both
personally as well as in my Debian derivative livecds).

However, I'm not an official Debian maintainer and thus would require
sponsoring (could ask a few other developers, shouldn't be an issue). Also, I'm
not aware how well people get along with Martin in general, although I do know
him from his debian-desktop work, amongst other things :-)

cheers, and if an official DD wants to step in instead: they are all yours

Alex

Bug#170719: Jikes RVM now depends only on free software to be built.

2004-03-31 Thread Steven Augart
As of March 27th, 2004, Jikes RVM now can be built using free software
tools.

http://oss.software.ibm.com/jikesrvm/userguide/HTML/Bootstrapping_with_Kaffe.html

As such, I believe it is now suitable for inclusion in Debian. If
there is any reason why it would not be suitable, please comment, and
I will fix the problem ASAP.

imapproxy is an IMAP proxy created in order to reduce load to IMAP
servers by Webmail programs. Originally part of the Horde project
[www.horde.org], for their IMP webmail.

Once a connection arrives, imapproxy forwards it to the real IMAP
server and notes it. It will keep the connection alive for an specified
amount of time even if the client closes it, thus heavily reducing the
amount of reconnections to the server. It is designed to be run in the same
host the webmail program runs at.

Imapproxy can be downloaded from http://www.imapproxy.org
( new, official website )

J.L.

Description : Fast prototype-based OO programming in Perl

This package provides for efficient and simple prototype-based
programming in Perl. You can provide different subroutines for each
object, and also have objects inherit their behavior and state from
 another object.
 .
The structure of an object is inspected and modified through *mirrors*,
which are created by calling "reflect" on an object or class that
 inherits from "Class::Prototyped".
 .
The author says: 'When I reach for "Class::Prototyped", it's generally
because I really need it. When the cleanest way of solving a problem is
for the code that uses a module to subclass from it, that is generally
a sign that "Class::Prototyped" would be of use. If you find yourself
avoiding the problem by passing anonymous subroutines as parameters
to the "new" method, that's another good sign that you should be using
prototype based programming. If you find yourself storing anonymous
subroutines in databases, configuration files, or text files, and then
writing infrastructure to handle calling those anonymous subroutines,
that's yet another sign. When you expect the people using your module
to want to change the behavior, override subroutines, and so forth,
 that's a sign'.

Description : a compiler construction tool written for Haskell

The BNF Converter is a compiler construction tool written for Haskell.
Given a Labelled BNF grammar it produces:

* an abstract syntax as a Haskell module
* a case skeleton for the abstract syntax as a Haskell module
* an Alex lexer generator file
* a Happy parser generator file
* a pretty-printer as a Haskell module
* a LaTeX file containing a readable specification of the lang

In essence, it generates a compiler frontend in Haskell from
one BNF description of the source language.

Description : Add context aware fetches to DBI

The Perl database independent interface - DBI - does not take much
advantage of Perl's context sensitivity. This is the situation where
a Perl subroutine knows whether the caller wants a single scalar
value or a list of them to be returned.
 .
DBIx::ContextualFetch is a sub-class of DBI which redefines some of
the various fetch methods to fix this oversight. It also adds a few
new methods for convenience (though not necessarily efficiency). Much
of this code was originally part of the IMA::DBI Perl module
 (libima-dbi-perl package).

Description : BruteFIR is a software convolution engine

BruteFIR is a software convolution engine, a program for applying long
FIR filters to multi-channel digital audio, either offline or in
realtime. Its basic operation is specified through a configuration file,
and filters, attenuation and delay can be changed in runtime through a
simple command line interface. The FIR filter algorithm used is an
optimised frequency domain algorithm, partly implemented in hand-coded
assembler, thus throughput is extremely high. In realtime, a standard
computer can typically run more than 10 channels with more than 6
filter taps each.

Bug#241343: ITP: apt-gentoo -- enhanced package installation

2004-03-31 Thread Moray Allan

* Package name: apt-gentoo
  Version : 0.0.1

  Description : enhanced package installation

apt-gentoo enhances the Debian package installation experience to make
it fully competitive with newly-popular source-based distributions.

As packages are installed, apt-gentoo automatically downloads their
build logs from the buildd network. The logs are then slowly scrolled
past on the user's terminal to simulate building the software on the

apt-gentoo optionally, and by default, gives increased realism by
spinning the CPU in a tight loop between build log lines, and writing
 large files to disk.

An additional utility apt-gentoo-benchmark is included to tune the
delay loops for your hardware by finding the length of time taken by
typical compiler and linker runs. (On slow or low-memory hardware we
recommend leaving these values at their defaults.)

A preliminary package of apt-gentoo is available at
 http://www-jcsu.jesus.cam.ac.uk/~mma29/apt-gentoo/

Description : A unified front-end for estimating statistical models in
GNU R

The upstream authors describe Zelig ("Everyone's Statistical
Software"), in part, as follows:

With thousands of contributors who have written hundreds of packaged
routines, R can deal with nearly any statistical problem. Although
this high level of participation may be its greatest strength, the
enormous diversity in approaches to statistical inference covered by R
often results in a virtual babel of competing functions and
inconsistent syntax.

To address these problems from a common perspective, we have created
Zelig, a single, easy-to-use program, with a unified framework and
syntax, that can estimate, help interpret, and present the results of
a large range of statistical methods. It literally _is_ "everyone's
statistical software" because Zelig uses R code from many researchers.
We also hope it will _become_ "everyone's statistical software" for
applications, and we have designed it so that anyone can use it or add
their methods to it. Zelig comes with detailed, self-contained
documentation that minimizes startup costs for Zelig and R, automates
graphics and summaries for all models, and, with only three simple
commands required, generally makes the power of R accessible for all
users. Zelig also works well for teaching, and is designed so that
scholars can use the same program they use for their research.

Description : GNOME daemon to auto-mount and manage media devices

gnome-volume-manager is a GNOME daemon that acts as a policy agent in
top of the kernel, udev, d-bus and HAL. It listens to HAL events and
reacts with user-configurable actions. Currently it supports automount
of new media and hot-plugged devices, autorun, autoplay for CDs and
DVDs, and automatic camera management. It is expected to be simple and
free of polling and other evil hacks.

Bug#241359: RFP: mathpartir -- LaTeX macros for typesetting inference rules

2004-03-31 Thread Mike Furr
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

  Package name: mathpartir
  Version : 1.1.1
  Upstream Author : Didier Rémy <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Description : LaTeX macros for typesetting inference rules

The package mathpartir provides an environment mathpar for typesetting a
sequence of math formulas in mixed horizontal and vertical mode. The
environment selects the best arrangement according to the line width, exactly
as paragraph mode does for words. Also included is a macro inferrule for
typesetting type inference rules.
