Bug#190811: RFA: bbmail -- Mail Utility for X

2003-04-26 Thread Matt Hope
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

Depends: blackbox|fluxbox, xlibs
Suggests: menu (>=1.5)
Description: Mail Utility for X
This is a small mail utility for use with the Blackbox window manager.

I don't use this package myself any more, so I feel it would be better
suited to somebody who may actually use it.

Zero bugs, last upload 2002-02-12. (No new upstream version since).

Matt.

Using the nobody as a work around for possible security holes seems a
really bad idea.

At the very least, please consider using another user ID, as other
programs might be using the nobody user. If one program is compromised,
the rest will also become compromised if they are sharing the one user.

Also, even using a non-root, non-shared user id is not going to prevent
an attacker doing damage via a buggy daemon, non-root users can do bad
things too. eg. DOS attacks (ulimits should help here), attack computers
on private/firewalled networks, etc.

Be sure to run it in 8bpp, then. Other depths have crap performance
because SDL does a whole picture conversion for each frame.

I'm orphaning this (again) because I don't have any svgalib capable
machines anymore, so I cannot test it. Sucks.

I have somewhere a nonworking port to X, which I can forward on to the
new maintainer.

I hope that's not what you intend to actually use for the long description:

1. It's not "our" product.

2. While a nice story about how Chandler came to be, it's not very
useful to a person trying to decide if the package is appropriate for
them.

3. It should be mentioned that Chandler is not yet intended for real
use. (And it should be kept out of testing/stable as well -- it's not
fair to the upstream to present works-in-progress as useful.)

Steve

Well, it's not completely out of the blue: XML::LibXML is a Perl wrapper
around libxml2, just as XML::LibXSLT is around libxslt and XML::GDOME
is around libgdome2. libxml2 is the base library for these other lib*,
and so it does make sense to name the common module XML::LibXML::Common.
And for the Debian package name we put lib in front and -perl at the
end, and make it all lowercase (all per Perl Policy and general Policy).

But since it's just a base module, hardly any user would have to deal
with this package directly, since the new version of XML::LibXML will
automagically pull the common package on the system.

Thanks,
Ardo
