How do I stop the Xserver?
Hi, I'm a Linux noob. I've installed several distros just o get a feel for Linux and really like it. My machine has a video card that requires the Nvidia driver. I have two quick questions. First, how do I stop the X server when I CTRL-ALT-F2 to a console? and two, does anyone know if the procedure for installing the .RUN package that Nvidia supplies work on Sarge??? I'd really appreciate answers to these. I have searched for answers but so far haven't found any clear answers. Repairing my MBR
Hi, My machine has the Lindows(linspire) linux system as well as debian sarge. I was booting through the Grub menu that Sarge setup and had CHmodded the jiffyboot program in Lindows to prevent it writing to the MBR, which it does every time it is rebooting. Somehow, however it did do it and so I now have a Lilo boot for lindows only. My Sarge install is intact but I can't get at it. Is there a way to boot into Lindows, chroot to Sarge and rerun the Grub MBR write so that I can get my Grub menu back? (If there is please provide clear instructions :) I'm a noob!! Problem with local network
Hi, Just installed Sarge using the pre-release candidate of the installer (Kernel 2.6.6), Worked like a charm. I even got the nvidia driver installed in seconds. My issue now is that I can't access my local LAN. I tried apt-get for samba and NFS but still don't have access. I searched for an answer but can't find one. I'm pretty much a noob with Debian and so would really appreciate the help with this. Can anyone help? Thanks Jim -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Need to get NFS and SMB installed and working.
Hi, I asked earlier about getting the NFS server running on my new Sarge install. I got no replies. I have tried researching it myself but have not found anything that explains it properly. Can someone please help? I need to be able to access the other machines on my network. Should I be on another mailing list?? Re: Re: Installing Java
Hi, I am using Sarge on an ABit board with Nforce2 integrated sound. During my boot, the following entries are made in the log; Jun 10 17:59:58 localhost kernel: Jun 10 17:59:58 localhost kernel: i810_audio: Audio Controller supports 6 channels. Jun 10 17:59:58 localhost kernel: i810_audio: Defaulting to base 2 channel mode. Jun 10 17:59:58 localhost kernel: i810_audio: Resetting connection 0 Jun 10 17:59:58 localhost kernel: ac97_codec: AC97 Audio codec, id: ALG32 (ALC650) Jun 10 17:59:58 localhost kernel: i810_audio: AC'97 codec 0, new EID value = 0x05c7 Jun 10 17:59:58 localhost kernel: i810_audio: AC'97 codec 0, DAC map configured, total channels = 6 Jun 10 17:59:58 localhost kernel: i810_audio: setting clocking to 48648 Jun 10 17:59:58 localhost kernel: Linux agpgart interface v0.100 (c) Dave Jones To me this seems to indicate that the sound should work, yet in KDE it isn't enabled. When I do enable it nothing happens. Any ideas anyone?? Thanks in advance, Jim -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Sound problem
Hi, Per Joris' advice, I added root to the group 'audio' and my sound works now for a few seconds. When I play a song, it works for up to 20 sconds and then stops and I get a message 'sound server fatal error: cpu overload, aborting' . The machine has an Athlon 2500 so I can't see an overload happening. Does anyone have any ideas? Jim -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? > > From: Greg Folkert <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Greg, Thanks for the reply. This is driving me nuts. I am using KDE and have tried enabling/disabling full duplex. It will play if I enable full duplex but the sound stops if I do anything else, like move a window. It does it as well if I try using a browser. In short, anything that uses any cpu cycles causes an interruption. Its almost as if something else is trying to use the sound system.
