I'd guess, that some process has the two files in question still open. Then, when deleting the files, only the corresponding directory-entry will vanish. Only when the process closes the file, the data (which occupies the space) vanishes too. Thus df returns the accurate results, whereas du has no chance to see and count the files and their sizes. Re: tftpd
Did you create "tftpboot" in the root directory and give appropriate permissions? If not then do so and restart inetd by issuing "inetd stop" then "inetd start". The tftp deamon uses /tftpboot directory when transfering files to and from the server/workstation. The only thing you should have to do is uncoment the tftp line in inetd.conf in the etc directory. tftp waits in the background for a request and will only be active when a request is received. Once the processes completes, tftp stops. If want to ensure that the inetd process is running simply issue "reboot" as root and your machine will reboot. If you enter "ps -ef | grep tftp" you will not see it active UNLESS you are actually transfering files. Then and ONLY then will you see the tftp process. Gnome shutdown configuration question
I am running SID/Gnome2 but had the same problem with Stable running 1.4. If I am running a Gnome Session of either version and am logged in as root and select "Log Out" from the menu I am prompted with a menu with three radio buttons (Logout, Restart, and Shutdown the Computer). When I try the Log Out when a regular user is logged in I get a different menu that just asks if I would like to Log Out. I do not get the other options. Does anyone know what I need to change to allow regular users use that same "Log Out" in gnome but be able to shutdown as root can. I know I can just logout to GDM and the shutdown or do it from a command prompt but I would prefer to Shutdown from within Gnome. Any info would be appreciated. Meaningful XML Conversion from Word, RTF, HTML, Text and PDF?
Hi, Are you looking for ways to improve how you convert existing content into XML? The CambridgeDocs xDoc Converter allows users to convert existing documents (Microsoft Word, RTF, HTML, PDF, Text, etc) into meaningful XML documents ( e.g. DocBook, HRXML, RIXML, IRXML, FPML, DAS-XML, NewsML, any custom schemas/DTDs, etc.). >From a recent Google search I've noticed your involvement with XML, and am sure that you understand its power. I also suspect that you've had some very creative ideas on how to employ XML and its related technologies for great impact, and that you are also aware of the complexities of any project that attempts to convert legacy content into meaningful XML. Unlocking legacy content for meaningful use in any project can be a very significant problem. The xDoc XML Converter from CambridgeDocs allows organizations to do exactly that. By providing a development environment specifically tailored to map contextual content to meaningful DTDs and XML Schemas, and a powerful transformation engine that can scale from a single to thousands of documents in a batch, the xDoc XML Converter becomes an essential tool in any XML conversion process. I'd like to direct your attention to 2 items that may be of interest to you. One is a free white paper, "Transforming Unstructured Content into Meaningful XML." I'd also invite you to learn more about CambridgeDocs and to download the fully functional evaluation version of the xDoc XML Converter from CambridgeDocs. re: Kernel 2.2.10 and Stallion Brumby 4 port serial card
I have a Stallion Brumby Multiport intelligent serial card. 4 port model. I had this card working fine under 2.0.x series of kernels, and had it compiled in as part of the kernel. I followed the info in the readme's for the card, and edited /usr/src/linux-`kernel version`\char\istallion.c to point to the io and memory address of the card. Anyways the problem is, when using 2.2.10 kernel, doing the same steps and editing the correct file, and then compiling the card in as part of the kernel, the system at boot time with the new kernel never finds the card. Anyone got this problem, and if so, did the get the card working. I have a Stallion EASYIO card which is non-intelligent and it also has the same problem. Those that can help, feel free to email me directly, as I am not part of the list. Thanks
apt-get newbie question
Hi, I decided to upgrade my slink box to potato tonight, using apt-get (0.3.10) for the first time, but I've gotten stuck: My /etc/apt/sources.list consists of one line: deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian unstable main contrib non-free I first ran "apt-get update", which seemed to work fine. Then, I ran "apt-get -f dist-upgrade", which is where things went awry: apt-get appeared to download a good number of packages successfully before coughing up 404 Not Found errors for dpkg-ftp, lilo, dhcpcd, gdb, info, man-db, libgpmg, gpm, dhcpcd, and nfs-server. Then, apt-get just quit, suggesting I try --fix-missing. So I believe I understand what the 404 errors mean -- the files that apt-get is trying to get simply don't exist -- but what I don't understand is if I'm doing something wrong that's causing these errors. Am I correct in assuming that the Packages list created by "apt-get update" is somehow out of sync with what's actually on http.us.debian.org? Or is there something else I'm missing? More to the point, what can I do to workaround this problem? Try another mirror? Thanks in advance, Michael

Slink installation freeze -- Ultra ATA/66 to blame?
Hi, I'm trying to install Slink from CD on my new computer. Booting from the CD-ROM starts out fine, until it gets to the md driver (which is for RAID, I believe?), at which point, the computer freezes. When the md driver line first appears on the screen, I can hear the hard disk spinning up and then it comes to a halt. The computer is an AMD Athlon 550 MHz with a 7200 RPM Ultra ATA/66 hard drive; the manual for the motherboard states that its AMD 756 Viper chipset has an IDE controller that supports Ultra ATA/66. I've been reading the recent postings regarding Ultra ATA/66 drives and, given the fact that the md driver seems to be the sticking point, I'm guessing that the hard drive is the crux of the problem. Beyond that, I'm clueless. I went into the BIOS and explicitly disabled UDMA on the device, and the computer still fails to boot. I just read in the Ultra-DMA Mini-Howto that "the old stock kernels (2.0.x) do not currently support UDMA very well," a statement that I assume applies to Slink. Is this my problem? If so, is there anything I can do to circumvent it? I want to upgrade to Potato anyway. Short of ordering a Potato CD from linux-cd.com, is there anyway I can get this to work? Thanks in advance, Michael

Various configuration issues
Hello, I purchased Debian 1.3 a couple of weeks ago (with donation) and I installed once already. I mucked things up a little and reinstalled. My first linux was SLS, then Slackware, then Redhat, and now Debian. I like the Debian philosophy so I'm going to stay with it. My first configuration issue is installing Netscape Communicator. On my previous install I used netscape's install script but I'd like to do it via dpkg so the software will be registered with the system. I already have the communicator tar file, I need a .deb file and instructions on how to make dpkg install it. The second thing I'd like is to be able to mount my DOS vfat drives (/mnt/c /mnt/d) so that user michael has rwx permission for the drives. I want to do this so that when I run netscape I can configure it to use my Win95 Netscape files. Does that work? The third thing is that when I run pon as root everything is fine. But when I run it as michael I get permission denied on two of the /etc/ppp scripts. I think it is the out script and the chat script. I did add michael to PID in the /etc/groups file(pid:x:michael or something like that, does x mean no password?) And lastly, I need a program that lets me adjust my XFConfig file while the server is running (S3 805 chip). I need to adjust my screens diminsions a little because when I adjust it via monitor controls it mucks up some of the Win95 adjustments. -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . pon permission problems
The pon command works from the root account but not from the 'michael' user account (mine's a single user system). Michael is a member of group pid and dialout. When michael executes pon the system issues the following complaint: You do not have permissions to access /etc/ppp.chatscript or /etc/ppp.options_out ls -l on ppp.chatscript: -rw--- 1 root root 235 Nov 27 11:54 /etc/ppp.chatscript ls -l on ppp.options_out: -rw--- 1 root root 108 Nov 27 12:01 /etc/ppp.options_out Clearly these files have the wrong permissions or owners. Which is it? PS. I had installed Netscape Communicator vis dpkg (took a while to get the tar file named correctly). However, I didn't like the setup because it wouldn't run as root. So I deinstalled via dpkg then used the netscape install script. Any problems with that? PPS. I installed the jdk stuff via dpkg as well. It took a while to figure out why Netscape was exiting by itself. I thought Java was included with it, why isn't it and why does it crash without it (because I've got Java module support installed in the kernel?)? -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . intel compiler not finding (system) header files
Folks, on my Debian dual-Xeon box, I have tried to install the Intel C/C++ compiler (ifc). I have followed Intel's instructions in "Platform Notes: Using Intel C++ Compiler on Unsupported Operating Systems". (This was essentially using 'alien' to convert rpm->deb, then dpkg and then sed INSTALLDIR to the name of the actual install directory for all .sh scripts) However, when I try to compile code that has usual C++ headers in (eg "#include ") it fails to find them. I presume it's not looking in the default system libraries... Ideas? (This was essentially using 'alien' to convert rpm->deb, then dpkg and then sed INSTALLDIR to the name of the actual install directory for all .sh scripts) Things looked fine. I compiled up 'mpich' and have used. Personally, I haven't had much luck with the alien conversion working properly. I don't think it's so much a problem with alien as it is with the way the Intel installation scripts work. I'm doing this from memory, so it may be not quite right, but I've found the most reliable way of installing the Intel compilers to be this: -- 'apt-get install rpm' and then 'rpm -initdb' so that rpm thinks it's behaving properly. -- untar the Intel stuff. -- fix install.sh. There's a test in the script (RPM_NOT_FOUND?) that relies on 'rpm -qa' working in a way that is, um, highly unlikely to work on Debian systems. If you run ./install.sh it'll pop out a message about this being an unsupported install that's pretty easy to find in the script. If you comment out the test that causes that message to be displayed (it's in one small shell function that I don't recall the name of), the install will work just fine. It seems that whenever I've done the install any other way, I've ended up with the problems you note -- the compiler not being able to find header files and such. Hope this helps... Re: icc C++ problems on Debian 2.4.27-1-686-smp
Top posting since this is a bit different (but still related - so kept original stuff for reference if needed) ** also note I've rebooted into the 'testing' 2.4.27-1-686 kernel (ie so not to confuse issues with having downloaded the SMP kernel from backports) 1) I didn't use the netCDF .deb but rather downloaded the latest from the UCAR web site (netcdf-3_6_0-beta6). 2) I think the initial issues I should sort out are relating to the Intel 8.1 compilers (as opposed to netCDF) 3) I have two machines, say "home" and "work" which behave differently when I do the same Intel compiler installation. (I'll give details of the systems after describing the issues.) The Intel compiler installation was following Intel's instructions (alien; dpkg; amend the scripts) 4) For a simple C++ program #include using namespace std; int main() { cout << "sizeof(char)" << sizeof(char) << "\n"; cout << "sizeof(int)" << sizeof(int) << "\n"; cout << "sizeof(float)" << sizeof(float) << "\n"; cout << "sizeof(double)" << sizeof(double) << "\n"; } the "home" 'icc' compiles, links and runs it without a problem and without the requirement of additional compiler flags. However, the "work" 'icc' requires the '-cxxlib-icc' flag, otherwise it produces the error simple.cpp(1): catastrophic error: could not open source file "iostream" The same is true if 'icpc' is used instead of 'icc'. 5) Linking seems another problem. This time the example is from (the downloaded UCAR) netCDF, but it's a question about the Intel compilers. It seems that you have to use 'icpc' and not 'icc' (fair enough!) but the former still only works on my "home" machine, whereas on "work" the first few errors are: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/src/netcdf-3_6_0-beta6/src/cxx$ icpc -o nctst -g -O2 nctst.o libnetcdf_c++.a -L../libsrc -lnetcdf 2>&1 | less nctst.o(.text+0xa3a): In function `__sti__$E': /opt/intel_cc_80/include/c++/iostream:38: undefined reference to `std::_Winit::_Winit()' nctst.o(.text+0xa49):/opt/intel_cc_80/include/c++/iostream:38: undefined reference to `std::_Winit::~_Winit()' nctst.o(.gnu.linkonce.t._ZSt4endlIcSt11char_traitsIcEERSt13basic_ostreamIT_T0_ES6_+0x2d): In function `std::basic_ostream >& std::endl >(std::basic_ostream std::char_traits >&)': /opt/intel_cc_80/include/c++/xlocnum:1081: undefined reference to `std::_Atomic_counter::operator++()' nctst.o(.gnu.linkonce.t._ZSt4endlIcSt11char_traitsIcEERSt13basic_ostreamIT_T0_ES6_+0x57):/opt/intel_cc_80/include/c++/xlocnum:1223: undefined reference to `std::_Atomic_counter::operator--()' ie lots of 'undefined references' The full outputs are available in the directory online at http://cloudbase.phy.umist.ac.uk/people/bane/tmp as [compiler]-[machine].out I am therefore thinking that something (gcc/g++?) isn't quite right on the "work" machine but I'm not really sure where to start looking so your expert advice is most welcome. Re: icc C++ problems on Debian 2.4.27-1-686-smp
Aha! Debian bug 272401 (see http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=272401) - and it related not to said kernel but to g++-3.3) seems to be the reason I could not get icpc to work on my Debian box. My workaround (not a proper solution) is to cd /usr/include/c++ ; ln -s 3.3 3.3.4 and then all (well all my current!) problems disappear. I also picked up that one should really, really, really be using icpc and not icc to compile C++ codes since they do operate in different ways. I guess the lesson learned is to "always check the BTS" first! (Of course the above will give problems if/when g++ is upgraded!) OT? hypertread on or off for SMP kernel
Hi - I've had a quick look on the WWW but can't find much of help. I've a dual Xeon box running testing and kernel from backports: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ uname -a Linux r 2.4.27-1-686-smp #1 SMP Fri Sep 3 06:34:36 UTC 2004 i686 GNU/Linux The SMP kernel does indeed make use of the processors available: 2 if hyperthreading (HT) is off and 4 if it is on. My questions are: a) for MPI codes (mpich v1.2.6 compiled with Intel 8.1 compilers), under which circumstances is better performance achieved with HT on or off? I'm looking for quite a detailed analysis which, if hasn't already been done, I can kick off if anybody's interested b) for general day to day running do people leave HT on or turn it off? The apps in question are MPI Fortran/C codes and I can say at run time how many processors (threads) I require. Thus for my dual Xeon I could have HT off and go up to 2 processors. But is it worth switching HT back on and going to 4 (logical) processors, that is my main question. I believe the answer is "depends on the nature of your codes" and I'm interested in hearing if anybody has studied this (eg with known memory intensive, compute intensive, comms intensive code kernels (not linux kernels!)). If not, I'm happy to kick this off as a low priority project. I've also posed this question to comp.parallel.mpi so if people are interested I can summarize any results/answers here. I understand & agree with the points you raise. I'll plough though the ref and see what I can glean. However, for one simple test (v.low memory, v.low comms, high compute) case which is Fortran90 compiled using mpich, I actually found turning HT off helped -- when it was on then for -np 2 there was no speed up (top implied they ran on same physical processor). I presume this was because the CPU was fully busy anyhow so the 2nd thread had to wait (you seem to imply the opposite but I don't follow why!). I can see more testing of 'mpich' on HT is probably worth doing, particularly for "real life" codes but it also strikes me that sometimes it is beneficial to put the processes on different processors (thus allowing HT for system and max return for MPI codes). I've just heard back from the mpich guys that the current mpich isn't thread safe. Thus turning off HT does indeed seem the sane thing to do. mpich2, apparently, will be thread safe "soon" so I'll look into that and report back once it hits the distribution sites Michael -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". kernel build: unresolved errors during dpkg -i
When trying to install the kernel image I get numerous 'unresolved symbols' errors - could somebody explain why (I had presumed the 'make menuconfig' and subsequent 'make-kpkg' would have ensured all dependencies were resolved) and whether I can ignore them (I presume not). usb printer hangs until reboot
Earlier today I could not use my USB printer. Looking at `ps -elf|grep usb` it continuously had process state 'D' ("uninterruptible sleep (usually IO)" according to `man ps`) and the CUPS web interface continually reported "usb printer busy" (or something very similar). I couldn't work out how to sort this out so resorted to a reboot and now it all works fine. My questions are thus: - any ideas what might have happened? or where to look for clues (I couldn't find anything in the /var/log files I checked) - any ideas on how to resolve it without rebooting if it happens again? I've done a Google but to no avail Thanks -- Michael Bane Atmospheric Physics Group University of Manchester -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Non-debian cd
Debian,I have been having troubles to no end installing Debian on my system.I've recently purchased a WD800JD SATA hd and the I/OFlex SATA Controller. First I was trying to install Woody for ~3-4 days before I received both pieces of hardware and have been trying to install it for many hours today. I asked a variety of questions in the Debian IRC channel and a user suggested I install Sarge with hopes of it supporting the SATA drive. Woody only detects hda1 and no scsi drive. Therefore, I've been trying to install Sarge via Netinst for numerous hours and have essentially gotten nowhere. The recurring problem relates to the *faulty* burnt cd's and how they are unrecognized. When attempting to install Sarge with Netinst, I load files from ' cd-drivers.img' in which it afterwards attempts to mount the Debian cd. However, I receive the error that "the cd is a non-debian cd." I've recently had luck with the Sarge cd and booting it directly after POST. The other cd's I've attempted to boot directly without the use of boot-disks has failed at the very beginning. However, seeing as I've made some headware, what am I required to do after this point? DPMS, DRDOS, /mlx? The latest cd I've created (w/ Nero Express) is bootable and the ISO has been expanded and burned. Any help is GREATLY appreciated. I really have my hopes up for Debian and would rather not install a different distro. If further detail is required--please inform me. ThanksMichael
Re: Non-debian cd
What did you do when you burnt the CD? I've used a number of netinstimages with no trouble. I tried a variety of different procedures. The first cd I wrote to was the ISO, files not verified. The second was another burn of the image--data not verified. The third try involved extracting the ISO, burning it, verifying the disc and making it bootable. Ah. Nero. Windows. What do you mean "expanded?" Sorry, expanded=extracted. An iso image should be burned as is. I've burned usable CDs with Nero, so it is possible. Make sure you're creating an image data CD. Yes, as I figured was the case. I've burned operational cd's quite a few times with Nero as well but the Debian cd's I've created have never seemed to function as they "should." Good choice. Once you get past the teething pains, you'll love it. If I'm ever fortunate enought to get past the difficulties of installation... I'm sure I will love it. I would like to again mention the question I had regarding DR-DOS when booting directly from the Debian netinst cd. I recently got this to work (much to my surprise) and I'm curious as to what exactly this involves... WoodyI agree with him. With relatively bleeding edge hardware (SATA), woody's likely too old. Not that it's impossible, but it's likelymore trouble than it's worth at the moment. Re: Non-debian cd
This is the verbatim error message: "The CD-ROM contains a non-Debian CD. Please insert a Debian CD to continue with the installation." This was the common error received when using the cd I just burned using CDBurnerXPPro3 (found this software in a Debian installation manual). I tried mounting a previously burned cd via the 'netinst' main menu, only to be haunted by this error message: "There was a problem reading data from the CDROM. Please make sure it is in the drive. If retrying does not work you should check the integrity of your CDROM." I recently tried the disks and cd on a Windows 98 machine (~8 years old) and encountered the same error message. Therefore, the error seems to be less a factor of an unsupported cd-writer and more a factor of burn quality/burn type. Although, considering both cd drives are very old (mine being ~6 years of age), I don't know how much can be ascertained from these findings. All of the Debian hardware compatibility lists I've looked at have been written somewhere in the range of years 2000-02. As I've said: I've recently been able to boot directly from the 'netinst' cd but I am unaware of how to proceed from that point on. Any pointers are much welcome... My cd drive is an HP CD-Writer Plus (technically: LG CD-RW CED-8083B). Thanks Michael On 5/7/05, Michael <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: What did you do when you burnt the CD? What do you mean "expanded?" Sorry, expanded=extracted. An iso image should be burned as is. I've burned usable CDs with Nero, so it is possible. Make sure you're creating an image data CD. Yes, as I figured was the case. I've burned operational cd's quite a few times with Nero as well but the Debian cd's I've created have never seemed to function as they "should." Good choice. Once you get past the teething pains, you'll love it. If I'm ever fortunate enought to get past the difficulties of installation... I'm sure I will love it. When you burn with them, ignore the living daylights out of what they say about burn speed. Just tell the burn program to use 4x, or even 2x. You needed a cup of coffee anyway, didn't you? Go for a walk. Yes, I was thinking about burning at a lower speed than 4x. I am giving 2x a go (the file is a meager 104MB, anyway) and if that doesn't work I'm going to try burning the cd using 'cdrecord' on Solaris Unix. journalling options [WAS: optimizing ext3...]
I've been trying to get somewhere with the below (seems easier to top post this time - apols!) and have come across the "data=journal" mode for ext3. Has anybody had experience with this as opposed to "data=ordered"? good or bad experiences? Is it possible to change this on a live system (http://www-106.ibm.com/developerworks/linux/library/l-fs8.html implies it's something at mount time, only)? Any other thoughts on why my system seems to creep to a crawl whenever there's IO (eg compressing a file, creating a tar, running progs with big (a couple Gb) files)? apt or aptitude on sarge
I note that it seems that aptitude is recommended over apt for Sarge. I was wondering if it's as str forward as just using aptitude from now on? eg I do not have to rebuild anything the first time i use aptitude (ie it uses the same dpkg info as apt - but in that case why is aptitude recommended over and above apt?) thanks -- Michael Bane Atmospheric Physics Group University of Manchester -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Re: Safety issues of cronning "apt-get -y upgrade"
Quoting "Clinton V. Weiss" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: On a stable Debian machine, would cronning apt-get -y upgrade (with the apt-get -y update of course) on a daily or weekly basis have any fault points? I'm asking since I'd like to ensure that upgrading of a server's packages is safe and secure without the need to SSH into the machine just for updates. Personally, I don't like the -y option unless I know exactly before hand which packages are upgraded. What if you have a custom conf file and it overwrites your custom one with the new one? For example: Squid and proxy auth. The woody version and sarge version have different ways of configuring proxy auth. If you blindly upgraded to sarge, your proxy auth would probably be busted. In most cases, your old conf would probably work just great, or perhaps apt does a great job of re-creating the new one based on your old settings. But in the end, on a production server, I like to know exactly whats happening to a the server during an upgrade. Therefore, I prefer manual upgrades. Just my opinion. Re: Request for window manager recommendations
Quoting [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Have just finished installing sarge (am a first-time debian user, very impressed), and now am chosing a window manager. I have fond memories of using a little-known WM called VTWM on SunOS, but that was almost 10 years ago now. I'm guessing the are other, at least equally noteworthy WM's around. Not so keen on KDE/GNOME because as I understand they are somewhat CPU-intensive and take longer to load than the traditional WMs. A personal recommendation of your favourite window manager would be much appreciated. My favorite has always been icewm. Very fast, and simple, but very configurable.
