New Server

2004-03-30 Thread duterium
Hello,

I have been using linux for a long while now, but in all my time using it for server
etc, I have never built a box specificically for linux. All my boxes have been old
PCs etc, old systems slapped together.

I am building a server for my buiness, I want to run apache/mail/firewall/router etc.
I would to spilt it over 2 boxes but dont have a large bugdet at the moment.

I am looking for recommendations on chipsets/mobo etc that work well with debian.
Normally, I would use anything and just make it work, but if I am gonna spend money I
may as well get the best performance I can.

I was thinking of an athlon based system, but could be tempeted over to intel. I am
not looking for a very expensive system, just a single processor will do fine. For my
needs I dont think I will go down the scsi route with IDE as fast as it is nowadays.

Any advice would be great.

Thanks

Protecting my data

2004-03-31 Thread duterium
Hello,

Thanks for your all your advice about linux hardware etc.

I am looking for some advice regarding securing data on my server.
Basically I am building a server for my business, and I want my small number of users
to be able to upload and download sensitive information from my server over the
internet. I have experience with many ftp server, etc, but not secure services. My
users are all running windows boxes. The files will be all sizes, anything up to 1
gig each, maybe more.
Ideally I would also like the data encrypted on the server as well, to protect from
any kind of hacking etc.

I have have used pgp for windows and i like the idea of my users having secure keys
they can use to dycrypt the data. Are they any good open source versions of PGP and
can a similar system be used in my case.

Any adivce you can give me would be very much apprecated.
