bad performance on playing video

2001-10-14 Thread ad
I use Xine to play VCD, DVD and other video files, the audio performance
is good, but the performance is awful, lots of lag. My CPU is PIII 1G,
764Mb ram, and AGP card with 4Mb ram. So I don't think my hardware is not
powerful enough to play video.
I set up MTRR support. What else should I do to increase the video
performance?

Debian Etch and time zone problem

2007-11-15 Thread ad
Hi! How can i make Debian etch use localtime zone as Etch's system time? I've
a dual boot system with winxp. My bios uses local time zone as hardware
clock. winxp also uses that. But Etch uses UTC. I want Etch to recognize
Local time zone. I don't want to use UTC. How can i prevent Etch from using
UTC(prevent UTC time from loading)?

Thanks.

Yes i tried that. I changed UTC=no. But after reboot Etch again uses UTC as it
was doing before. Thanks for your help. Is there anything else i should do?

Thank you Stephan. The problem is solved. I didn't modify the time in gnome
clock after editing /etc/default/rcS . Thought it would do it automatically.
Silly me! After all that and reboot it shows the correct time. Again thank
you.

Iceweasel window control button and beryl problem

2008-01-13 Thread ad
Hi! I'm having strange problem with Iceweasel and beryl. I've installed beryl
with Gnome. When I run iceweasel browser and make the mouse pointer wait over
any window control button(miniminze, maximize or close button) the button
doesn't glow properly. I see a box with distorted images instead of showing
the glow. However this doesn't happen with other windows. I mean i can open
any other application window and those buttons glow fine. it happens only
when i'm using iceweasel. Is it possible to help me find solution to this
problem? By the way I'm using Debian Etch. Thanks.

that error was gone, and framerates of 3D applications improved a lot,

Re: How to install Debian 6 sparc with RAID 1 at installation

2011-10-12 Thread Ad L.
First of all, I am not very experienced and use the i686 architecture,
but what I did might help:

I've put a variety of partitions on the 2 disks I use for the purpose
of dual booting. One holds the filesystems etc. for the other OS,
intended for legacy applications that I still use... may use.

I've made the first partition of Debian 6 as single partition of
512MB, to be mounted as /boot.
One of the next primary partitions is set up exactly the same on both
disks, to be used as sRAID devices.
After partitioning, I've set up software RAID using those 2
partitions. mdadm is used for management, and it simply works;
increased read speeds, no errors.
The only thing one might be slightly worried about is gparted not
recognising the filesystems, but e2fsck and similar tools appear to
work as usual.

Hope it helps..

Re: Re: grub-install fails an RAID1

2011-10-12 Thread Ad L.
Regardless of the possibility to use the space, I ALWAYS leave the
first cylinder of a disk unused (aligning partitions to cylinder
boundaries). I find the idea of using the first cylinder for "optimal"
space usage a bit ridiculous, to be honest. With thousands of
cylinders on a disk, if not more, a single unused cylinder doesn't
matter all that much (we're talking about 8032.5 Kilobytes here). And
keeping it (and maybe the last one) free means these problems simply
don't turn up at all, with over 7MBytes available for the bootloader.
Is there any boot loader available that would use need much?

Re: XFCE--can't mount USB devices

2011-10-12 Thread Ad L.
(Suggestion)
check the mount options in /etc/fstab. For example, the lines for one
of the user-accessible partitions on my external hard drive looks like
this:
# "Resources" partition on external HD (/dev/sdd2)
UUID=---- /mnt/Resources.src ext4
user,noauto,relatime 0 0

Note the option "user", or the alternative option "users". One of both
has to be there to be able to mount and unmount the filesystem without
root privileges.

Also note that "user" implies the restriction that only the user who
mounted the filesystem can unmount it again.

rkhunter database update - which method is recommended?

2011-10-12 Thread Ad L.
Hello all,

a little while ago, I executed the 'rkhunter' hunter script as part of
a random check. It gave me a warning about changed files, but as I
checked synaptic's history, I found out that those files are part of
packages that were updated.

My intention is to find out how to build a trigger, either for apt or
for dpkg, to update the rkhunter database after each package upgrade.
Maybe it'd be smart to run rkhunter before updates as well, to catch
the unauthorized changes that might be there.

My question:
should I focus on apt, or rather on dpkg? As far as I'm aware, both
synaptic and aptitude rely on apt, but I feel that it's wise to handle
any security-related issues as low-level as possible.

Does anyone have other suggestions to consider?

Regards,

Ad

Re: Re: How to install Debian 6 sparc with RAID 1 at installation

I was happy to have a MEPIS Live CD around with ext4 support. I've
used it to move data about and pre-partition/pre-format the
partitions, except for the ones used for sRAID.

I don't know if MEPIS supports the architecture you're using, but
maybe Knoppix would be more suitable. Knoppix has it's Debian base in
common with MEPIS.

Also, when partitioning with a GUI tool, keep 8 MiB free space before
the first partition and appropriate alignment keeping the first
cylinder free is guaranteed as long as the free space is honoured. It
might get you to end up with a second cylinder unused at the
beginning, but that shouldn't be a problem anyhow.

Try the mdadm tool to see if there's something wrong with the array or
it's devices. The options you may find useful to begin with, IMHO,
would be:

`mdadm --query`
To find out if a device is an array or part of one.

`mdadm --examine`
Will query the device that is part of an array (not the array itself)
and print out the metadata stored. That should give you some more
information about the partitions.

`mdadm --detail`
Prints out information about array devices (the array as a whole).

The tool has more functionality that could help you finding out what's
going on. Got no other usefuI ideas right now and rather think of
getting an account somewhere eIse, because this goole software or
whatever it relies on is being absolutely pathetic -_-

Debian 6 Squeeze bug report: application or kernel bug?

2011-10-07 Thread Ad L.
I am not sure where to file this bug report, because it's a kerneloops
caused by a bug.

This is what happened:
1. USB2 hard disk disconnected and immediately reconnected, which could be
caused by a known bug in certain EHCI controller chips
2. An X process probably got terminated and restarted
3. Checking /etc/mtab, I noticed the two partitions on the old device path
are still registered as mounted
4. An attempt to unmount either one of them fails, at which point another
stack trace is being printed - so yet another severe (unhandled) error or
exception occurred
5. I notice that several processes are in a blocked state
6. The blocked processes prevent a normal shutdown from the desktop
7. Terminating the blocked processes fails (using 'kill -KILL #PID' and
'kill -TERM #PID'), in any possible way this command didn't work
8. As a last resort, I switched to a basic terminal trying to shutdown using
'init 6', which failed either
9. Decided to take the chance and use the case's reset button

It concerns me that things got this far now. I encountered the problem at #1
more often while using the MEPIS Live CD, but it simply resulted in read
error messages, but nothing serious. This time, at least one of the
exceptions occurred when 'umount' was running.

Should I report this as a kernel bug, or as a bug in the mount package?
(considering "Pid: 3218, comm: umount ...")

Re: Debian 6 Squeeze bug report: application or kernel bug?

Thanks, I wasn't completely sure.

And my apologies for taking the non-existant "non-html"-character of
gmail for granted. Should be solved now. That's one point where I
absolutely love Debian+Xfce: serious functionality without resources
being clogged up with beautiful but hungry gadgets. Must be said
though, Xfce does have a fair share of it's own beauty while being
very compact.

Also my apologies for even forgetting to put my name at the bottom.
Using a mailing list for the first time, and it's been time-consuming,
while I strongly prefer to use that time to send out a proper, useful
bug report.

Anyway, thanks again. I hope that it'll reflect in a good contribution
towards even better open source software.

My simplest bet would be this one:
head /var/log/dpkg.log

One of the very first lines would read:
[date] [time] install base-files [initialVersion]

I'm not sure if the log ever gets replaced or moved, but my system says that.
Tool used: head (showing the first lines of a file)
Related tool: tail (showing the last/latest lines of a file)

Re: Re: HD Data Recovery

2011-10-08 Thread Ad L.
Silently seconded. But I guess it's human nature to simply not listen
until it turns out that was a wrong choice. And plenty never learn
afterwards either.

Anyway, on topic:

Most tools allow you to tell the Linux kernel the amount of sectors,
heads and cylinders the disk has. It should simply be on the label,
and some additional information, such as the use of LBA48, which is
the case for most newer disks.

If you're too lazy to find a proper backup program etc., put down some
more money and buy the new harddisk... twice!
Attach them on 2 separate channels (would be appropriate in the case
of IDE disks) and you'll have an increased reading speed in the
meanwhile.
Then use Linux' software RAID capabilities to use partitions on both
disks as a RAID1 array. You may have to use expert install for that.
If one disk fail in the future, you still have the other one. Using
mdadm you can replace the failed one with a new device.
Possible partition setup (equal on both disks):
Primary #1: Normal Partition, e.g. ext3, mounted as /boot (just feels
safe in case of older boot managers that don't support sRAID)
Primary #2: Linux swap (Note: swap on both disks means a swap area of
DOUBLE the size of this partition, so 512MB-1GB should be great)
Primary #3: The rest of the space, mounted as / (will be /dev/md0)
-OR- ~20-60GBytes
Primary #4: None -OR- the rest of the space, mounted as /home (will be
/dev/md1), so you can re-install the OS without touching your own
files
