Controlling swapping
Hi, Is there a way to control the aggresiveness of swapping. My computer is on all the time with most of my most commonly used applications left open. If the computer is not used for a while it takes an annoying long amount of time to reload the open applications from swap (I may as well reload the program form scratch). Is there a way to tell the kernel not to swap unless required? I'm using 2.4.20 on a much modified testing system. The box is only used for desktop purposes. Thanks in advance. R.J. Search google for Endeavour Mark II -- which is the latest version. You will probably have to compile it yourself but some people I know use it extensively. Personally I generally use "emelfm" a simple 2-pane gtk based file manager - very light weight! Hope this helps, R. It appears to be a function of time, if an open program is not used for a while it gets swapped to disk even if no other program is requesting memory. I suppose the kernel is anticipating -- this process hasn't been used for a while, swap it out, be ready for a new process. I would try to run without swap but editing the odd large graphic file requires it. The newer the kernel is the more I notice this. It didn't happen with kernel 0.99 pl 14 :) Thanks R. Pentium III 450 with 128MB ram, kernel 2.4.20, 128MB swap. I generally run Windowmaker and have open office, sylpheed, and gmt (terminal prog) running continuously. I'm in and out of nedit. While I'm using these programs and switching between them everything works OK with no or very little swapping. Leave the computer alone for a half hour and try to resume working and a bunch of swapping occours. Note the programs do not take an "an absolute absurd time to come outta swap" just enough to be annoying. I was hoping there was a method of some how tuning swapping/caching parameters to not do any swapping/caching while the machine was left idle. Thanks, R. CDRW UDF file system scripts
Greetings, I recently patched my kernel so that I could use a CDRW as a regular file system for backup purposes. Right know I manually run: pktsetup /dev/pktcdvd0 /dev/scd1 and then mount the drive with the following options in fstab: rw,user, noatime, noauto everything works well but if I shutdown and forget to manually unmount the cdrw the system hangs when trying to unmount the local filesystems. Which script(s) do I have to modify to run "pktsetup" on bootup automatically and also be able to shutdown properly. The only problem is shutting down without unmounting -- the packet-CD driver process is terminated before the attempt to umount the drive and so the shutdown just hangs. I don't know how to change the shutdown scripts in a debian friendly way so that the driver persists until umount is called. Solutions that I have come up with will be over-written when the boot/shutdown scripts deb (whatever it is) is updated. R. I have never installed qt from download.kde.org -- maybe it installs the libs and headers in the "opt" directory as is done in some other distributions?? Six months ago I switched from testing to unstable because gnome2 in testing was pretty broken at the time. I have found unstable to be be more stable than testing was -- if that makes sense :) The versions of qt and kde in unstable had no problems compiling the 1.1 beta of Scribus (a desktop publishing program) two days ago. If nothing else works maybe a switch to unstable is in order. If you tell me the name of the program I will confirm if unstable will compile it here. Mozilla Font Madness
Hi, I'm having a strange problem with mozilla fonts in testing. I have two users on a particular machine. One uses windowmaker and one uses gnome(1.4). The fonts in mozilla for the windowmaker user look relatively good whereas the gnome user's fonts look horrible!! Both users have exactly the same fonts selected in their font preferences in mozilla and both are obviously using the same X configuration (using Xfree's builtin truetype font server). The truetype fonts in other applications (konqueror, gimp etc) work well for both users. I have deleted both users .netscape & .mozilla directories and reconfigured both with the same results!! Help: green smail and hamm
Just got a new computer and decided to do a new (not an upgrade) install of hamm(frozen) by using dselect with ftp. So far I have gotten all the "Standard" files and everything went smoothly with the following exceptions: 1. the smail and lynx files on the ftp server were different than those in the Packages file. I installed these using dpkg later. 2. I had to run deselct several times to get tex to install. Have not fully tested it yet but seems OK. current status: 1: dselect now runs without any packages showing dependancy problems or any errors. 2: I can connect to my isp, use lynx, ftp etc. I can ping localhost, talk between users (using vt's, it's a stand alone system). MY PROBLEM: I can't get (s)mail to work, even locally. The smail error files show me it can't even find "root". I have tried almost every possible option using smailconfig --force, but still no luck. perhaps there are some packages required that I don't have yet? What I would like my machine to do: It is a stand alone machine with a modem connection to the internet. It is used by four people that use local mail to pass messages to each other. I have 1 mailbox with my ISP but several aliases for that mailbox (one for each user). I would like to have - local mail sent immediately - if connected have internet mail sent immediately - if offline queue the internet bound mesages and send them when anyone initiates an internet connection. - when an internet connection is made by anyone get any mail from my ISP's pop3 server and sort and deliver the mail locally according to their aliases (each user should only be able to read his own mail, obviously). - these users use several different mail programs (including netscape) to read their mail, probably not a problem? additional questions: to which group should I add a user to allow them to initiate a ppp dialup connection (pon), or failing this what's the safest way to accomplish this. If a user terminates the ppp connection during the uploading or downloading of mail will it cause problems and if so how can I avoid them. Lastly would like to thank the debian volunteers for their time and effort, it is greatly appreciated!! re: wdm keyboard lock-up
I have a slink system (updated from hamm) which seemed to be working perfectly, however I recently attempted to install wdm which dselect starts during the installation procedure -- all apeared to work well. I thought I should reboot to see if booting would take me directly to wdm and it did but my keyboard was completely dead (not even the caps lock led would work) but my mouse continued to function perfectly allowing me to push buttons etc. This is the first time since kernel 0.99 pl15 that I have been forced to use the power button :) I rebooted in single user mode and purged wdm -- evrything is back to normal but I was to give a demonstration for an employer next week and dont want them to see the scary looking command line. Does anybody have any idea why this might happen ?? Thanks in advance! Roy Pluschke <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
X depth and truetype font sizes
Hi, Has anyone else noticed that when you change the color depth of XFree86 ie. from 16 to 32 bpp that the truetype font sizes in gnome and KDE apps change? Is there any way to fix this !! When I edit graphics I generally am in 32bpp and the rest of the time in 16bpp as it is faster on my aging hardware. I know I could create different users for different color depths but what a pain to create multiple configurations for all my apps. By the way the msttcorefonts package that was added to testing today(yesterday) is broken -- beware -- . After a apt-get upgrade I lost those fonts and had to add symlinks manually to get them back. OFF TOPIC: x-country-manager
Hi, I just reloaded the stable branch onto a new partion since the "Quebec" package wanted its own partion. I was suprised to find that the "x-country-manager" in stable was still set to "Chretien" when everybody has known for years that this x-country-manager causes file system corruption. In order to rectify this problem I did a : dpkg --purge Chretien dkpg --purge Liberal apt-get install conservative I found that this configuration resulted in my machine being vunerable to DOS attacks and one or two deamons hogging all the CPU power for themselves. As a last resort I purged the conservative packages and did a tasksel on NDP. This configuration squanders my system resources and has almost brought my machine to a halt. I'm afraid to change my x-country-manager again since each time I switch I lose 5% of my disk space to a file called xcm-pensions. Has anybody out there found a decent x-country-manager or should the "canada" package be moved to non-free? modules.dep is older than modules.conf
Since my last apt-get upgrade today (potatoe) I keep getting this error message when I boot and modules are loaded. I 'touched' modules.dep to give it a newer time stamp but when I reboot it is changed back to 8 hours earlier than my boot time. This is probably happening because the boot scripts don't set the my system to local time (pst) before depmod is run. Should this be considered a bug and reported?? As a temp solution I set the time stamp for modules.conf to a earlier date. Roy Pluschke <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Also check your /etc/host* files and that nothing strange is happening with dns. RJP -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
stopping resolution switching with xdm, gdm etc.
I recently tried installing a graphical login screen after years of just typing startx. Is there a way of stopping the ?dm family of display managers from resetting the display resolution as it goes from the login screen to the persons desktop and back. On my box it shows a jumbled graphics screen in between switches and look rather unproffesional -- whats worse is that it occasionally hangs the system (1 out of 50 times). arts problems
Hi, I'm running sid with a 2.6 kernel and recently have noticed that the sound quality through juk is horrible. I investigated further and it seems to be an arts problem (all other apps which don't use arts sound fine). I've tried modifying everything possible in the kde sound configuration panel without any success. Is anyone else having this problem? I sure miss juk. thanks in advance RJP -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Recent alsa midi problem
After a recent dist-upgrade on my "sid" system midi has stopped working. Both soundfonts loaded with sfxload and timidity started as a soft synth (timidity -iA -Os -B2,8 &) have stopped functioning. Starting noteedit and attempting to config a synth says that no sequencer is available. Using sfxload for a sound font I would get the /dev/sequencer: No such device message and sometimes the command would just hang. My modules always seemed to load correctly though. I have found a somewhat unsatisfactory solution -- If I boot into my windows partition and use the soundblaster utility to reset to factory defaults all is fine again when booting back into linux. It appears that alsa can occasionally screw up the synth portion of the sound card to the point that even a cold reboot doesn't solve the problem. I have no idea how I would have recovered without a windows partition still hanging around. I may just revert to a 2.4 kernel with low latency patches and a 0.9 alsa -- this combination worked for me for the longest time without any problems. Different sized gnome fonts in KDE
Sorry about starting a new thread but I deleted the mail and now remebered how I fixed this problem. Gnome fonts where using a different dpi than kde was. Under gnome-font-properties there is a "details" or "advanced" button, I forget which. Press this and the new dialog will allow you to set the dpi for gnome fonts. I made sure this was the same as I was starting kde with and all was well. Hope this helps, RJP -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? I don't know exactly what you mean by blopping but about a month ago after an update (I'm using sid) Juk started sounding distorted, not really bad, but quite noticeable when compared to the same file played under xmms or gqmpeg. Kaboodle also has the distortion (I don't use amarok or noatun). These are all KDE apps so I assumed it was a problem with some kde library or arts. If I set Juk to use gstreamer rather than arts I get no sound at all even though other programs using gstreamer work correctly. sound recording - sid
Greetings, I recently installed gnome-meeting in sid and noticed that in the installation wizard I wasn't getting the delayed recording played back. I have since tried to record with other applications (gnome-sound-recorder, audacity, krec) also without luck or useful error messages. I am running a 2.4.20 kernel with alsa 0.9 and a soundblaster live. Sound works perfectly in every other way ie. the tv card, cd, xmms, midi with sxfload or timidity in alsa server mode. I can speak into my mike and hear my voice through the speakers with the mixer adjusting the volume correctly. It does not matter which recording source I pick - none work :( I am a menber of the group audio and have attempted recording both with and without soundservers running. My permissions on dsp are as follows lrwxrwxrwx1 root root9 2002-07-29 22:05 dsp -> /dev/dsp0 crw-rw1 root audio 14, 3 2002-07-29 22:05 dsp0 crw-rw1 root audio 14, 19 2002-07-29 22:05 dsp1 crw-rw1 root audio 14, 35 2002-07-29 22:05 dsp2 crw-rw1 root audio 14, 51 2002-07-29 22:05 dsp3 I did change the link 'dsp' to the group audio as well, but that didn't help so I change it back. Does anyone know whats going on here?? I know recording was working before (severl months ago) as I recorded some old 78's for a friend to CD. Does anybody know the magic incantation to place in my .xsession file to start kde3.2 with startx? thanks in advance R.J.P. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". mkisofs - unstable
Hi, I am running unstable with a 2.62 kernel using the native ATAPI support in favour of the deprecated ide-scsi for my cd writer. All works fine using k3b to make music cd's but I get the following error when trying to burn a data cd: /usr/bin/mkisofs: Resource temporarily unavailable. cannot fwrite 2048*1 The above is from the k3b's error log. In k3b's progress window the following error is written mkisofs returned an unknown error (code 11). Is the mkisofs currently in unstable incompatible with the native ATAPI support? or are others having success? I found out that I was trying to compile the drivers with a different version of gcc that my kernel was compiled with. Making sure that that both the nvidia drivers and kernel were compiled with the same version of gcc made the problem go away. Konqueror and mp3
Is there a way of configuring konqueror so that mp3's can be ripped like ogg files currently can via audiocd:/ -- the mp3 player in my car can't handle ogg. Start timidity in "server mode" (timidity -Os -iA -B2,8 &) and then configure noteedit to use the softsynth and you are set. I installed timidity a long time ago -- probably on Ham. At that time the patches that came with timidity weren't very good so I installed the "eawpats" myself. They are available here http://www.stardate.bc.ca/eawpatches/eawpats12_full.rar You will need to "unrar" them (apt-get install unrar) I placed them in /usr/share/timidity/eawpats/ my timidity.cfg file looks as follows # start dir /usr/share/timidity/eawpats/ source gravis.cfg source gsdrums.cfg source gssfx.cfg source xgmap2.cfg # end That should get you running :) R.J.P. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". From "man unrar" After the program name comes a command and then optional switches with dashes before them. A summary of commands is included below. For a complete description, run unrar without options. therefore the command would be: unrar e -y whatever.rar the "e" being a command, the "-y" is a switch. It looks like whatever you downloaded "eaqpats12_fullxyz" with might have stripped the ".rar" extension. You might have to tack it back on. k3b and wav files
Hi, I am running unstable and I have several wav files that I would like to burn to an audio cd. According to the k3b documentation this should just be a drag and drop process however I am getting an unspported format error. Note that I can drag and drop ogg and mp3's without any problem. I have tried other wav files on my system i.e. system sounds with the same unfortuate result. The wav plugin for k3b is loaded. Other cd burning operations work fine so I don't believe it is permissions issue. Anybody have any suggestions how I can get this to work? X is looking for a window manager or program to run and when it doesn't find one exits. Make sure you have KDE or Gnome or whatever window manager installed and then edit/create the .xsession file in your home directory. Mine looks as follows: exec wmaker # exec gnome-session # exec kde3 I uncomment what I feel like using that day. Some people prefer to use a display mamnager like kdm/gdm/xdm that logs you in and lets you select from a variety of installed window/session managers. hope this helps, R.J.P. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". The sound fonts that come with the soundcard are called 2gmgsmt.sf2, 4gmgsmt.sf2 and 8mbgmsfx.sf2 which I'm sure you can find with a quick google. Note that using the cards wave synth under alsa drops an occasional note. See the alsa home page about this bug. > timidity is installed and works but I need true midi now. I don't understand the above statement. Timidity is/has true midi. To run timidity as a alsa synth start up timidity like this: timidity -Os -iA -B2,8 & Its best to have timidity suid root so that it can use the real time scheduler/clock or whatever it is called. In your application i.e. rosegarden or noteedit just select the timidity synth instead of the soundcard synth. The timidity samples are much better that the 8mb sound fonts that come by default with the soundblaster cards. R.J.P. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". The "timidity-patches" are not of the same quality as the "eawpats". 10mb as opposed to 24mb, the difference is quite audible.
