newbie: apt->x11 only?
I would like to get only xfree86 4.0 (out of woody, presumably), but don't want to deal with all of woody updates - what's the easiest way? i tried getting sources.list to point only to pool/../xfree, and such, without success i also tried loading all 'testing' into dselect but couldn't get it to not update a lot of things, even with 'Directly requested' mode. thanks for help! MOTIVATING PROBLEM (in case someone has a direct solution): X on ATI Rage LT Pro in an Inspiron 7000 1024x768 I've used steve hsieh's patched Mach64 (X3.3.6, http://www.eecs.umich.edu/~steveh/inspiron/) in the past, but it fails with potato for some reason. However, his suggested XF86Config works with the "ati" driver in X4.0 from redhat7. I'd really rather use Debian than Redhat, but I also want Xwindows. thanks

emacs site file
excuse me if slightly off-topic, but where do i stick an emacs site-start.el file (if that's even the right thing - i want a global .emacs) /usr/share/emacs/site-lisp, /usr/share/emacs/20.7/site-lisp don't work. thx in advance. ------ |Remy Indebetouw303-492-5835 | |CASA/ARL, APS, University of Colorado at Boulder| |[EMAIL PROTECTED] http://casa.colorado.edu/~indebeto | --
partial upgrade confusion
I have potato but libc6 (and a couple of other things, I think binutils) from woody. I need lib6c-dev, but want as little else as possible. I tried pointing my sources.list at woody, running apt-get upgrade, and apt-get install libc6-dev. It wants to do a lot of things that I didn't think would be related (see below), like remove gnome. Can i do this in a simpler manner, without so many other changes, or does all this depend on each other? Why do all these other packages depend on libc6-dev? (as opposed to libc6) Or should I try to downgrade my libc6, hoping that I don't have much else from woody that will break? Re: partial upgrade confusion
Thanks for the reply; The thing I don't understand is if all the other upgrades are tied to upgrading libc6, how I got libc6 on there in the first place without upgrading the rest (I've got libc6-2.2.5-3 according to dselect). Given that everything seems to be happy with libc6-2.2.5-3, can I just force it to install libc6-dev and leave libc6 and associated dependencies alone? Perhaps my understanding of dependencies is faulty? Attempting to get the newer apt has the same problem of libc6 showing up as needing to be installed/upgraded, and then all the other packages as well. Re: x-forwarding with ssh
The default doesn't do X-forwarding. ssh -X remote.machine does. I never bothered to track down the config file where -X could be made default but I'm pretty sure there is one. Re: backlight off w/o suspend
Apologies for any protocol breach; I started this question on debian-laptop, but thought there might be a few more kind people to help on the higher-traffic list. Original question: > I'd like to turn off the backlight when I'm away for the day, but leave > unsuspended so I can connect back from work via the cable modem. > > There was a similar question last summer and the suggestion to switch to > CRT; something like that would be fine with me, except that the fn-f8 that > would appear to accomplish this on my Dell I7K doesn't do anything. A couple of people suggested having the bios do the job, but my bios power settings seem to be ignored in linux. This raises a question i've had for a long time - does APM even pay attention to the bios settings, or does it do its own thing? I was under the impression the latter. More original question: thanks to two people who suggested noflushd, which appears to have taken care of most of this (it wakes up occasionally even when not using the machine, but not very often) > Also, the Battery-Operated mini-HOWTO seems dated and not always > applicable to debian (e.g. no update call in /etc/inittab), so any > suggestions for better advice on reducing syncing and flushing intervals > w/o a full suspend would also be appreciated. Thank you, -r manually input useful .sig per 'suggestion' thread: i'm running mostly potato with some woody
another potato/woody X3/4 question
I've got a potato/woody pinned hybrid, and my main reluctance to just dist-upgrade is related to this: I appear to have both Xfree 3 and 4 (see apt-cache output below; I didn't purposefully do this, parts of X4 came along with libc6-dev, I think. BTW thanks to those who convinced me that apt would not lead me astray in a hydrid system. deb packaging rocks once again). I used a patched Mach64 server on my Dell I7K laptop (ATI Rage), so what I'd like to do is configure and try X4 without trashing X3, or at least know how to get back, so -how do i tell if I have all parts of X4 (I thought this was x-window-system) -how would i get back if it doesn't work? restore the old /etc/X11/XF86Config and what else?? -once X4 works can i just purge task-x-window-system to wipe X3? Thanks in advance. agave:~> apt-cache policy xserver-xfree86 xfree86-common task-x-window-system xbase x-window-system xserver-xfree86: Installed: (none) Candidate: 4.1.0-14 Version Table: 4.1.0-14 0 50 http://http.us.debian.org woody/main Packages xfree86-common: Installed: 4.1.0-13 Candidate: 4.1.0-13 Version Table: 4.1.0-14 0 50 http://http.us.debian.org woody/main Packages *** 4.1.0-13 0 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 3.3.6-11potato32 0 500 ftp://ftp.debian.org potato/main Packages 500 http://security.debian.org stable/updates/main Packages task-x-window-system: Installed: (none) Candidate: 2.1 Version Table: 2.1 0 500 ftp://ftp.debian.org potato/main Packages xbase: Installed: (none) Candidate: 3.3.6-11potato32 Version Table: 3.3.6-11potato32 0 500 ftp://ftp.debian.org potato/main Packages 500 http://security.debian.org stable/updates/main Packages x-window-system: Installed: (none) Candidate: 4.1.0-14 Version Table: 4.1.0-14 0 50 http://http.us.debian.org woody/main Packages
