dist-upgrade is just an upgrade that resolves the more complex packages.

Possible. Could be a bad copy of files. Could be anything. Try manually
browsing the mirror using your webbrowser or lftp etc. to see if the
files are there.

Not quite true. Windows will prompt you if the file contains an unknown

java in mozilla

Hi,

I am struggling to get the java plugin to work in mozilla. I am running
unstable . I have blackdown jre1.4 installed. I have tried jre1.3 but
that did not work either. The symlinks to the java plugin seem to be
correct but mozilla is not loading the plugin.

What should I do?

pppd headache

2003-10-30 Thread Paul William
Hi,

I am having major problems with pppd. Please help :-(

I use the following commands to allow my palm (tungsten E) to connect to
the net via ppp:

#masq stuff
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
iptables -A POSTROUTING -t nat -j MASQUERADE -o eth0

#/dev/pilot is a symlink to /dev/ttyUSB1
/usr/sbin/pppd /dev/pilot 115200 192.168.0.40:192.168.0.42 noauth silent
local persist -detach

It will not run unless the palm is trying to connect - it spits out the
following error if the palm is not trying to connect:

Failed to open /dev/pilot: No such device

How do I suppress that error so it wait till the palm tries to connect
(and the device is created)?

Once it is running I cant stop it. Nothing (I mean it) will stop it. I
have to restart the computer if I need to use other programs with the
palm and worse of all it will not allow the file system to be unmounted
because it is always using the /dev/ttyUSB0 file!! It causes fsck to run
every boot!

How can I set pppd up so that it disconnects and shuts down when the
palm does? Can it be set up at boot: to wait on a palm connection but
not block the device)?

uname -a:

Just tar it up, write some instructions on howto deploy it and put it on

fetchmail problem

2003-11-08 Thread Paul William
Hi

I am running fetchmail on woody. I want fetchmail to get mail from a
pop3 account and deliver to mail to two local accounts. I want both to
receive all the mail - not multi-drop. Can this be done?

Thanks very much

Paul

Just compile the manufacturers source as a module after you finish
compiling the kernel and load in at boot up by adding it to
/etc/modules.

strange 8139too problem/question

2003-09-18 Thread Paul William
Hi,

I went through the woody installation. I installed the 2.4.18-bf kernel
and when I got to the part of the install where you select kernel
modules the 8139too (realtek 8139 NIC driver) was not there?!?!

I then exited the installation and reinstalled because I need that
driver. I did my reinstall with the default kernel (2.2.x.*ide or
something) and the 8139too was there.

When I finished the install I used apt-get to install the 2.4.18-bf
kernel.

When I do lsmod the 8139too does not show up yet my NIC works. Is the
8139too module compiled into the 2.4.18-bf kernel? If not, how come my
NIC is working but there is no net drivers when I run lsmod?

Thanks

Paul

installing nvidia - missing

2003-09-19 Thread Paul William
Hi,

When I try to install the nvidia drivers I get a compiler mesasge that I
am missing this file:

nv-linux.h:24:31: linux/modversions.h: No such file or directory
make: *** [nv.o] Error 1

modversions.h is not installed wit my kernel (2.4.18-bf). I am running
sid.

What should I do. I have searched packages.debian.org and the only
package that I can find that contains that filein unstable is some werid
depreciated package that installs the file in some weird location.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks very much,

Paul

If there is a bug in a debian package and you are 90% sure its the
upstream developers fault should you still report it and let the
packager forward it upstream? I dont want to piss of debian packagers.

Opps, forgot to mention that the line:
$delete=0 if /^To.*?linux/i;

Must be altered. Replace the linux part with any string that occurs in
your email address. eg if you address is [EMAIL PROTECTED] you should
replace linux with abc123 ie.
$delete=0 if /^To.*?abc123/i;

My bad,

Cheers

installing unstable package in woody

2003-10-04 Thread Paul William
Hi,

There is an unstable/testing package (firehol) that I need to install on
a woody system. I do not think there will be any dependency problems. Is
this possible? Will dpkg allow me to install a testing package on woody?

Cheers

netsaint

Hi,

I installed netsaint but when I access it throught my browser I get the
following error message:

You don't have permission to access /netsaint/ on this server.

I am using woody and my web server is apache. The netsaint deb made the
needed changes to my httpd.conf.

How do I access netsaint and/or what permissions do I need to change?

Thanks

Re: Stable? Unstable?

2003-10-07 Thread Paul William
*official* debian cds are stable. After you install upgrading to
unstable or testing is easy and painless.

I use unstable because I love having up2date (excuse the rh pun)
software and I dont like waiting for milestone releases from other dists
ie. redhat/mandrake.

Upgrading to unstable or testing requires a lot of downloading depending
on what you have install.

Cheers

I have run the following command:

Re: Intel f90 compiler for Debian.

2003-11-28 Thread Paul William
have u tried using alien?
# alien apackage.rpm

Alien must be run as root or fakeroot.

Alien will produce a debian package that can be install using
#dpkg -i apackage.deb

You may find that there are some library issues ie.
A package look for abc.so.1 while in debian there is abc.so. To fix this
simply create a symlink of abc.so called abc.so.1

Cheers

alternatives to NIS and NFS

2004-08-02 Thread Paul William
Hi,
I am in charge of a small office network. The server is running Debian
stable with some testing packages and the desktops are running mandrake
10.0.

Currently we are using NIS for authentication and NFS to share the home
directories.

I have been having some hassles with NIS and would like to upgrade to a
more modern system.

Are there any alternatives to NFS and NIS?
As long as it not to complex to setup and is fairly easy to administer
its fine. X is not on the server so all admin takes place over
ssh.Security is an issue.

It is safe to assume that there will not be any windows clients on the
network, ever :) There is one osx ibook being used but it does not need
to 'login' to the network.

Thanks very much,
Paul

Re: alternatives to NIS and NFS

2004-08-02 Thread Paul William

Samba's not a goer. Doesn't do Unix permissions. It's a Windows/OS/2
sharing scheme.
I was wondering about that ...
There is nfs over ssl but its not yet ported to linux:
http://www.crufty.net/Products/sNFS.html

There is shfs, an ssh file system, but it seems too immuture to use on a
corperate network : http://shfs.sourceforge.net/index.html

what about http://uranus.it.swin.edu.au/~jn/linux/smbfs/ . smbfs with
unix extentions?

Cheers

Re: Americas army

2003-12-18 Thread Paul William
I reinstalled the nvidia drivers because I thought that an upgrade may
have overridden the nvidia GL drivers. Now glxinfo shows the GL_EXT_bgra
extension and direct rendering is enable ...

Now when I run armyops I get the following error:

Could not load OpenGL library

History:

Exiting due to error

Any ideas? Other GL programs run including tuxkart, tuxracer and GL
xscreensavers which did not work before.

Would be nice to form a armyops debain clan . I used to play AA when it
first came on windoze.

Cheers

Paul

libgdkxft0 in unstable removes all gtk2 stuff

2003-12-22 Thread Paul William
Hi,

In order to use anti-alised fonts in gtk1.2 app in you need to install
libgdkxft0 . The problem is that this seems to conflict with all gtk2
apps including gnome! "After unpacking 401MB disk space will be freed."
!

Is there a way to install this package without dropping all gtk2 apps?

Cheers

soundblaster live alsa

Hi all,

I am trying to get my soundblaster live card to work using alsa. I get
sound out of the left/right speakers but a lot of static from the center
and back left and back right speakers? They worked fine with the emu10k1
driver. I have done a lot of tweaking the alsamixers settings without
any luck.

Any ideas?

Thanks very much

Re: Goodbye stable?

2004-03-28 Thread Paul William
hi,

dist-upgrade to sarge or unstable. I run unstable and find it more
stable than other 'stable' dists.

Wolfgang Jeltsch wrote:
Hello,

I just discovered the recent increase of the numer of release-critical bugs
and was shocked. The RCB diagramm seems to suggest that sarge will hardly
ever be released as stable.

I'm asking myself what the impacts of this are? Will Debian lose a lot of
users since the current stable release contains software which is somtimes
terrible old? What are the reasons for sarge taking so long to become
stable? Were there any such release problems with the previous releases of
Debian? Is it desirable for me to keep at Debian if I don't get a relatively
current system?

I hope to hear good opinions, no flamewars and no apologetic.

Any pointers?

For the record, I am not using the debian package for nvidia drivers. I
install it directly and so far this has not given me any trouble.

You and everybody else with a 2.6 kernel and an nVidiot card. I can't
Nvidias latest drivers work with a 2.6.0 kernel.

wait until I have money again so I can see just how far an nVidia card
will sail when launched from a skyscraper rooftop.

Any pointers?

1) Go to http://www.minion.de/ and get the appropriate driver.
2) Realize that nVidia is more trouble than it's worth.
3) Chuck nVidia card, get a video card who cares about the Linux
   community (like, say, ATI).
