(Using Firefox 1.0.4 in Sarge.) This feature may be (likely) missing
from Iceweasel.

I agree, and also the installation of the specific video card drivers
and software may help, at least nvidia allows to "soft-adjust" the
screen on the monitor. It is useful, and the only solution when the
system is dual-booted (and the screen is fine with the other OS).

Yes, plugins are the problem. I recently upgraded from Sarge to Etch,
and Iceweasel didn't handle flash correctly. (Java was OK in the few
applications I tried.) My bookmarks and preferences were kept, and the
transition was really seamless, except for the flash. If there was a
plugins directory in usr/share/iceweasel as there was in firefox,
fixing it would have been simple, but there wasn't. So I removed
Iceweasel and reinstalled Firefox. Again, transition went seamlessly...

If you are talking about dialog boxes with symbols instead of letters,
this may be a fontconfig problem. I had that once when I was running
Sarge and installed wine from backports.org. No such problems (yet) in
Etch.

Make sure that the file is saved in the same format you specified! If
you save it using ISO-8859-2 (I assume this is your default locale), and
then specify some other encoding in the meta tag, it may confuse the
browser.

Check your /etc/hosts! It should include a line like this:

127.0.0.1 localhost

No, they are not PHP files; they are Matlab functions. You should be
able to run them using Octave. I had to change line 43 of
McCabeThiele.m, from AXIS (capital) to axis (lower case).
This way it displayed a graph started without parameters. Since I'm
an electronic engineer and in no way familiar with distillation (except
the final products, that is), I have no idea what output the function
should provide.

Yes, it will be; for you and for people that have a /scripts directory
in their home folders. It will not do any harm for the ones who don't,
but it's not a nice solution.

Adding $HOME to /etc/profile should not work the way you want it to.
These settings are global, consider them as "executed by root", so in
this case $HOME will resolve as /root, not /home/manon as you may have
expected.
I think the other problem is related to the mode you start a terminal
session, whether or not bash is a login shell. There was further
information in this thread before.

Two suggestions:
1. Get Java directly from java.com! It is newer than the one packaged
in Etch. (Version 5 Update 6 vs. Version 6 Update 2)
2. Try Opera. It's quite simple to install the Java plugin for it, you
simply have to specify the path to your Java installation.

The charset you specify in the header (or the meta tag) must match that
of the file saved in. The problem looks like you saved your file in
UTF-8 (your system default?), and try to display it as ISO-8859-x.
Either save the file using the ISO encoding, or set the header to UTF-8.

I know this is not the solution for your problem, but you can access
the login preferences via gdmsetup, when you are logged in.

Adobe SVG viewer plugin

2007-08-25 Thread Nyizsnyik Ferenc

  Hi Debianists,

I have a strange problem with the SVG viewer plugin from Adobe [1].
I use XFCE. I installed the plugin, then went to test it. An EULA
was displayed, I accepted it, and from then on, SVG graphicvs were
displayed correctly.
However, my wife uses Gnome. When she tried to check SVG, nothing was
displayed, and Iceweasel stopped with a segmentation fault. When I
started it from a terminal window, there were two messages:
Could not find font to display EULA
Could not find font to display menu

The same happened with my guest account. But, when I logged in to an
XFCE session with the guest account, all went well. Logging back to
Gnome the same thing happened (except that the EULA message wasn't
displayed, since I accepted it).

So, my question basically is: what are the differences between Gnome
and XFCE related to font handling, and what shall I do to let the SVG
plugin access the font it needs under Gnome?

  Thanks in advance.

In Bluefish, there is a "View in browser" button which you can
configure, and it's also possible to add options for other browsers. I
think it's quite useful for editing HTML, PHP, JSP pages and many more.

Yes, of course you will need one.

It will do. I have a GeForce4 MX440 card in my 4-5 year old computer.
Compiz runs nicely with it. Of course the newer and the more memory
onboard, the better.

And forget ATI cards, their driver has... some discrepancies.

I assume that you have only mis-typed the command in this message, but I
better mention it. I also assume that you have just installed Debian
Sarge.
To execute the above-mentioned command, you have to be root. Type su and
then the root password.

Just a question: have you restarted your server? This can be a real
annoyance when you discover that you should have been able to solve the
problem by typing

/etc/init.d/apache2 stop
/etc/init.d/apache2 start

as root. (Assuming you use Apache2, of course.)

By any chance, have you switched ISPs recently? You may still have the
DNS addresses of the old ISP, so everytime it resolves an IP, it has to
go to an outside nameserver, causing very long resolution time.
Just an idea...

He-he. Good one!
But, just to clear things: jpeg is not neccesarily a lossy format -
although we usually make it lossy to save space.
So, be sure that you know what you are doing when you are being sued!
For example:
 - He came here after swallowing a piece of puzzle.
 - My dog suddenly ran in and that's his tail.
 - I explicitly asked the patient to smile but he refused to.
The possibilities are infinite.

(But the jpeg ITSELF is still not lossy, but it can be made to be.)

Hi,

If the modem can act as an Ethernet router, it should be no problem -
just let the system know that the IP address will be assigned by DHCP.

If it is an USB ADSL modem, that is a real headache to set up. You need
drivers, which may or may not exist. And if they do exist, they may or
may not be packaged as .debs. And the type of the modem usually isn't
enough to find the driver, because there are types which are made with
several different chipsets. If, however, the drivers are found, the hard
part is done. Then pppoeconf should do the rest.

Good luck!

Those dialogs are a bit confusing indeed, but once you are used to them,

So tax softwares use Window$ all around the world :(
I managed to print from the one here in Hungary. I made a symbolic link
in /usr/local/bin:

ln -s /usr/bin/gtklp lpr

So, since /usr/local/bin precedes /usr/bin in my path, wine (and other
tools) use gtklp to print. This approach may also work for you while
you are waiting for your government to make their tax software
platform-independent.

PS: Specifying gtklp instead of lpr in ~/.wine/config somehow didn't
work.

Here a ~ seems to be missing.

I have the following line in /etc/environment:
JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun

I hope this helps.

There's no need to export the variables defined in /etc/environment...

...nor is to set them in $PATH. Try creating an /etc/environment file
consisting only
JAVA_HOME=/opt/jdk1.5.0_12
It should work from then on.

So when you type for example
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ java example
the program "example" starts? Then it works. Menu links can be edited
to include the full path to java like
Exec=java example
==>
Exec=/opt/jdk1.5.0_12/bin/java example

This has to be done only once.

Connect the phone and start wammu. Choose Phone -> Connect. You should
now see the specs of your phone. Now you can Retrieve -> Messages, then
Backup -> Save messages.
If you have a lot of them (several hundred), wammu will be irresponsive
for a few minutes, don't be scared. :)
Hope this helps.

No, it worked immediately. Are you sure that your phone is recognized
by the system? Try lsusb after you connect it, and if it's listed, try
starting wammu, then select Wammu -> Search phone!
If this doesn't help, you should also try gnokii, I've heard that it's
a good tool for Nokia phones.

In my case, when I connect the phone via USB cable, I can mount the
memory card like an ordinary pendrive. Try lsusb to check if the phone
is seen by the system.
I hope this time I can help. :)

That's good, since as far as I know, there is no Sid image out there.
Check http://www.debian.org/releases/unstable/
The only way to get Sid is to upgrade from a previous release via
# aptitude dist-upgrade.

So your dilemma simplifies to this question: do the upgrade from Etch,
or upgrade to Lenny and then to Sid. I would go along the second path,
but I usually play it safe.

Yes, you can download it as SOME .deb packages, not one. "Some" can
vary from a few to approx. 50, depending on your needs, and without
the dependencies.
But I think it won't solve your problem, since dpkg will run into the
same problem.
Anyway, the packages can be downloaded from http://packages.debian.org

I use Bluefish also, and I'm quite satisfied with it. The "View in

also for Javascript and php. And I also use Bluefish for C, C++, Java
and Pascal.

Or keep a file named

in very important directories, and when you issue
rm *
hopefully rm will interpret it as an argument.
However, this is not very nice. We are clever enough to use Linux -
careless clicking costs files. :)

I have only hdb1 to hdb6. When I try to mount hdb4 (the Solaris
partition), it gives "wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock
on /dev/hdb4, missing codepage or other error". dmesg shows
"ufs_read_super: bad magic number".
This makes sense, because I certainly don't want to mount the slices
together, but I can't see them one by one.

It is to be created in /etc. If you don't have any, create one
in /etc/ppp, and a symlink in /etc pointing to it. Basically it consists
of two lines - the two nameservers you will use and your ISP should have
provided. So it will look like:

nameserver aaa.bbb.ccc.dd1
nameserver aaa.bbb.ccc.dd2

If you don't have these details, check your network connection settings
in XP, and use the nameservers from there.

Actually mscompress and msexpand were made to handle this type of files.

One more thing, just to clarify things:
msexpand is not for zipped exe files, it is for compressed files on the
windows install media, like, for example, notepad.ex_ and winipsec.dl_.
They were compressed by (ms)compress and will be expanded as notepad.exe
and winipsec.dll.

On my system, this package is the dependency of g77-3.4 nad g77. Since

No, you don't. The netinst image is self-containing, so just burn it
on a CD, the computer will boot from it, there are no more actions
neccessary.

Hello,

You need the cupsys package, and I recommend installing the foomatic
also. There are also several printer auto-detection tools out there, but
you might not need any. These two packages have a lot of printers in
their databases.
Good luck!

Yes. Just make a symlink in ~/.wine/dosdevices named d: (or your
preferred letter for the CD-ROM) pointing to the folder you copied the
CD to. (Assuming that you are not talking about an ISO image.)

lpinfo should be in /usr/sbin. If you installed cupsys, you should have
it. You might not need it anyway, if you run gnome-cups-manager
(assuming you use gnome), you should be able to add your printer. This
tool will also autodetect connected printers.

Good point!
Try the following:
1. Save your /etc/apt/sources.list file as /etc/apt/sources.list.old!
2. Make a new one containing only the following line:
deb http://security.debian.org/ stable/updates main contrib non-free
(and maybe the first line describing the DVD.)
3. Try apt-get update now!
4. If it works, you may add the contents of your old sources.list file
line by line, but I suggest adding only this repository:
deb ftp://ftp.{two-letter country code}.debian.org/debian/ stable
contrib main non-free
It has pymol :-)
Good luck!

Are you able to play it in Totem? On my system Totem is the only player
that plays audio CDs. Haven't bothered to fix the others - maybe one
day.
If Totem also doesn't play, I have no more ideas.

libdvdcss is part of the libdvdread3 package. I confess I have never
tried to watch a DVD on Debian. (I prefer the "big screen" and 5.1
sound...)
I use Sarge anyway, so it seems to be a common problem both in Sarge and
in Etch.

Hello,
I was in a similar situation. A driver may or may not exist for your
modem type. Try to search for it including the VID and PID in the search
string. (These are two 2-byte hex numbers - you may obtain them via
usbview or in window$.) Then, if you have managed to install the driver,
simply set up the connection using pppoeconf (assuming your ISP uses
PPPoE). The "special number" consists of your VCI and VPI (Virtual
Channel Identifier and Virtual Path Identifier). Your ISP should provide
those.
The hard part is finding the driver, which means rebooting every 20
minutes. (Assuming you have Internet connection only in window$.) Once
the driver works, setting up a connection should not be a problem.
Good luck!

Exactly, and you should leave it disabled also, for security reasons.
You can pass tags via $_GET['mytag'] instead of $mytag.

Even better idea: format that partition in FAT32! This way data exchange
between Linux and Window$ will be very easy.
And don't be afraid of grub: it will autodetect all your installed OSs
and will set up the boot menu all by itself. At least it did in my case.
Good luck!

First: I am talking about xfree86. This may or may not apply in your
case.
There is a question somewhere asking if you want to configure your
monitor in basic, medium or advanced level. It will only allow you to
specify your sync values if you choose advanced.
There was also a bug with xfree86. Read the first few lines of xorg.conf
if it says anything about md5sums.
Good luck!

Hello,

If you installed Sarge, KDE should be installed by default. Just log out
from your Gnome session, and at the welcome screen, choose Sessions -
KDE. If you install more desktop environments, you will be available to
choose them there.

If it's in the path, you can use:
which script.sh
If it is not, then you have $0.
Example:
location=`which script.sh || $0`

Try selecting "Play location" from the upper-left corner menu, or press
Crtl-L. The ^ button opens a "Play file" window. Also, mount the CD
first, and enter /mnt/cdrom or /media/cdrom instead of /dev/cdrom.

In your window manager preferences there should be some tick boxes
saying "Automatically give focus to newly created windows" and/or
"Automatically raise windows when they receive focus". They should do
the trick.

If this is the only output, you may try this:

I'm getting ~2200, and they rotate in kind of a weird way. It seems like
they were rotating so fast that our eyes can't follow. (Is it possible?)
Also, I found a man page, but that didn't say anything about that
option. (Does it really exist? It doesn't have any effect.)
For reference, I have 2.6.8-2-386 kernel and nVidia GeForce 4.

The simplest solution is to use file-roller. Provided that you have a
GUI and file-roller installed, of course. This will let you browse
several types of archives, and also extract one or more files.

Yes, try parted. It's a command line (ncurses?) based partition editing
tool. If you don't have Debian installed yet, and have a fast internet
connection, you may want to download Knoppix. It has the qtparted tool,
which does the same with GUI.
Good luck!

I have a .htaccess file in my public_html/cgi-bin directory:

Options +ExecCGI

Hello,
I use gtKam (in Sarge). I get every photo from my camera (Canon
Powershot S45) with all the meta-info, including date and time of shot,
of course, but also focal length, exposure time, white balance and so
on. I don't think you can change these.

I am using the freely downloadable student edition of Circuit Maker, and
it works well enough for university tasks. And it runs nicely in wine,
so I assume the full version runs also. I know, I know: this is not
professional. :))
The other one I like is eagle. It is distributed with Debian, in the
non-free section.

At the grub screen, press 'e' and then again after selecting the kernel
line. Append 'single' to the parameter list and press Enter then 'b' to
boot your system. You should get a line asking for your root password,
then a shell prompt. Now you may do whatever you would like to.

Only a few things need to be changed in /etc/fstab to achieve your
goal. Change the filesystem type from `ntfs' to `ntfs-3g' and include
`rw' and `users' in the options.

Yes, I understood it, but my statement still stands. If you use an
individual device and want it to be hotpluggable, you may consider
creating an udev rule with the VID:PID or UUID. Also don't forget to
add the `noauto' option to the correspondning line in /etc/fstab, just
to be sure.

that the filenames in question contain some national characters and you

Here is the relevant part from my xorg.conf:

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Generic Keyboard"
Driver "kbd"
Option"CoreKeyboard"
Option"XkbRules" "xorg"
Option"XkbModel" "pc104"
Option"XkbLayout" "us,hu,tr"
Option"XkbVariant" "altgr-intl,102_qwerty_dot_nodead,intl"
EndSection

The interesting part is 'altgr-intl'. Editing your xorg.conf may not be
necessary if you (all your users) use a single desktop environment, for
example, Gnome. Just select the altgr-intl variant in the keyboard
layout dialog.
