Verizon DSL success?

2003-09-06 Thread Michael Dickey
Has anyone had success getting Verizon DSL to work? I did the setup in Windows
:( and then rebooted to try w/ Linux. I am running Woody, pppoe, and I ran
through the pppoeconf setup. I looked at the connect session with ethereal,
and am getting (in this order):
PADI
PADO
PADR
PADS
PPP LCP configuration requests and acks (PAP negotiated)
numerous attempts to send username and password
PPP LCP Termination request (due to failure to authenticate)
PPP LCP Termination Ack
PADT
PADT

I have read through all of the READMEs and HOWTOs, and it looks like I have
everything set up right. Any suggestions before I go out and by a Linksys
router that can handle the pppoe connection for me?

I am not currently subscribed to the list, so please cc me on replies. Thanks.

Michael

HTML editor

2000-12-23 Thread Michael Dickey
Any suggestions for a good HTML editor that does color highlighting &
understands PHP? My favorite editor is HomeSite, and I have yet to find
anything comparable for Linux. I've tried running HomeSite with WINE, but
haven't gotten that to work :( thanks for any suggestions.

Thankd for suggestions everyone. I've settled on Quanta for KDE - very
similar to HomeSite & it understands many other programming syntaxes (sp?)
including php. thanks.

Serial port problems

2001-03-25 Thread Michael Dickey
I am having trouble getting the serial port on my laptop to work. I have a
Dell Latitude running potato. The port works fine when I boot into Windows -
it is Com1 at x03F8, irq 4. I have had no luck getting it to work in Linux,
however. After boot, "dmesg" gives me:

Based on what is up at the top of all that, it seems that the settings are

I don't see anything at 3F8, and irq 4 seems to be assigned to something else
entirely! I can verify that I am receiving data on the port from Windows in

can give me will be appreciated!

Problems compiling kernel

2001-12-28 Thread Michael Dickey
I'm trying to compile a kernel to get wireless lan
support for my laptop computer. I have
kernel-source-2.4.16, and the pcmcia-source package
from woody. Using make menuconfig, it appeared that
the kernel would include support for pcmcia, so I
didn't do anything with the pcmcia package. I followed
the steps in the README, and upon attempting a reboot
locked with the message "kmod: failed to exec
/sbin/modprobe -s -k binfmt-464c, errno = 8" scrolling
down the screen.

That didn't work, so I attempted to compile pcmcia
separately (no errors) and use make-kpkg kernel-image
and make-kpkg modules. Making modules errored out with
"Module /usr/src/pcmcia-cs failed".

I'm obviously doing something very wrong - if anyone
would care to walk me through this, or point me to a
source of information that explains the whole process
and how it all fits together, I would appreciate it.

unresolved symbols in modules - GPL issues?

2001-12-30 Thread Michael Dickey
Hopefully someone can help with this. I am trying to get my linksys
WPC11 card working on my laptop running Debian woody.

I compiled kernel and modules, including pcmcia (Debian 2.2.20
source, pcmcia_cs source 3.3.30 from sourceforge.net - Debian
pcmcia_cs source wouldn't compile for some reason) and compiled the
prism2 wireless drivers using the linux-wlan-ng-0.1.12. package at
ftp.linux-wlan.org No problem so far. Installed modules (kernel
source, pcmcia_cs, and wireless, and booted with the new kernel. My
Xircom ethernet/modem combo card works fine, along with everything
else, but lsmod doesn't show any wireless modules. "depmod" gives me:
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in
lib/modules/2.2.20/pcmcia/prism2_cs.0
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/usb/usbcore.o

"insmod prism2_cs" gives a whole list of unresolved sumbols and ends
with "Note: modules without a GPL compatible license cannot use
GPLONLY_ symbols
insmod prism2_cs failed"

I get the same GPL note for "insmod usbcore", so I don't think it's a
problem with the prism2 drivers, but before I spend hours trying
different things (earlier version of pcmcia_cs source?) I'll ask if
any of you have experienced this and know what I can do to fix it.

Thanks for your time.

Re: KDE i386 binary debs

2002-01-04 Thread Michael Dickey
Go to http://kde.debian.net - there you will find the lines to add to
your /etc/apt/sources.list file. You won't get KDE 2.2 for Potato,
but the 2.1 that you can get is pretty solid. If you want 2.2 you
will have to upgrade to Woody, - not recommended if you are doing it
specifically for KDE, since to make that work right you will have to
install some packages from unstable...

Gnome & GDM - root login?

2002-01-05 Thread Michael Dickey
Seems a silly question, but...
Just installed Gnome & GDM on my son's computer along with a lot of the
Debian-junior packages. Now I find that I cannot login as root - I always get
the message "The system administrator is not allowed to login from this
screen" I can do some system admin stuff from an xterm if I su root, but how
do I actually do a root login and use Gnome as root so I can configure it?

I recently had this message many times on two woody installs - a laptop and a

GPLONLY_ symbols" I just compiled a new kernel for my workstation and
compiled and installed the drivers from linux-wlan-ng-0.1.12, (pci this time)
and I get the same errors:
"depmod" gives me:
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in lib/modules/2.2.20/net/prism2_pci.0

"insmod prism2_pci" gives me a whole list of unresolved symbol errors and
ends with the same "Note: modules without a GPL compatible license cannot use
GPLONLY_ symbols.

I am using Debian up-to-date Woody and am running my own 2.2.20 kernel on
both laptop and workstation. I have tried Debian kernel-source 2.2.19 and had
the same errors. The README for the linux-wlan-ng-0.1.12 drivers says that
they have been tested on woody & the 2.2.20 kernel, so I'm not trying
something totally new here.

Somebody please help - I am absolutely stuck here! I'm willing to do the
research to get this figured out, but I haven't been able to find much info
on this error. Has this happened to anyone else?

I did this, and now have great 3D video. The nvidia packages in Woody didn't
work - didn't even seem to be complete, but the drivers from the Nvidia web
site compiled and worked with no problems. Thanks for the help (Wayne too).

X locks up

2002-01-07 Thread Michael Dickey
Just started experiencing this problem with a fresh install of woody on my
laptop. X locks up as soon as I try to do anything, and ctrl-alt-backspace
won't kill it, nothing will. This happens running twm or KDE window manager.
I have no idea how to troubleshoot this. Any ideas?

Michael

Re: X locks up - more info

2002-01-07 Thread Michael Dickey
More observations: when this happens, fonts are all messed up -
larger
than they should be, and parts of them are missing. When I telnet
to the computer, XFree86 is consuming ~99% CPU resources, however
even after I kill all x-related processes the desktop is still locked

up. The only way I have been able to get out of this is to do a hard
reboot. Michael

I agree wholeheartedly. With no LaTex experience at all, I picked up the
Lamport book and managed to write my 100+ page Masters thesis. That book was
a lifesaver!

Xserver security setting

2001-06-12 Thread Michael Dickey
After upgrading to 2.2r3 I found that X would only
start in 800x600 mode. I tried running XF86Setup again
(maybe not the right way to go about fixing this?) and
successfully got all the way through the setup until
it started the Xserver with 1024x768 resolution and
saved the config file. I then tried startx, and it
didn't. What I got was:

X: cannot read security setting from /etc/X11/Xserver
_X11TransSocketUNIXConnect: Can't connect: errno = 111
giving up.
xinit: Connection refused (erron 111): unable to
connect to X server
xinit: No such process (erron 3): Server error

/etc/X11/Xserver only has one entry for the SVGA
server

What am I doing wrong?

Modules issues

2001-06-12 Thread Michael Dickey
After installing the kernel & modules I just compiled
I find that when booting there are all sorts of error
messages, most including something about modules.conf
being more recent than modules.dep. I can only glimpse
the messages before they are gone. Everything seems to
work fine, though. Is there something that I can do to
clean things up and eliminate the errors?
