Problem with ALSA on Toshiba S5200-902 - Can't play Enemy Territory ;-(
Hi, I am using Kernel 2.4.22 with ALSA. Alsa is working fine so far with KDE, but it can't get it working with enemy territory. I get the following error message (from et console output): [..] --- sound initialization --- /dev/dsp: Input/output error Could not mmap /dev/dsp Sound memory manager started [..] I really don't know where to look for. My googling hasn't turned up anything meaningful to me yet. Q: Why is linux-wlan-ng not an ordinary part of the kernel?
Hi, I believe to have a prism wlan card in my notebook and while digging around what to do I came to the conclusion that I need a module, which is in linx-wlan-ng?! It is a kernel module and part of the official debian distro, isn't it? My expectation had been to see this turn up in menuconfig, but it doesn't. There also isn't a precompiled module for the current 2.4.22 kernel in the repository. Is there any particular reason for this or is it just, that the module somehow is prevented from becoming a *first class* citizen of the kernel? Just wondering... On a sidebar ... When logging into KDE I do hear sound, but it sounds like it is played to loud (which it isn't). I believe it is a driver/settings issue as it was working fine with the other os. Yep, I compiled the 2.4.22 sources from unstable, but after reading the other posting from david am now moving to wlan-ng. At least I have found an option to use WEP128 there. > > Btw. If some day a 2.4.22 module will come out, how would I tell my > > system not use the pcmci stuff anymore, but the wlan-ng? > by installing linux-wlan-ng which inserts the module info in /etc/pcmcia I added the description reported by card manager to wlan-ng.conf and mapped it to prism2_cs. Furthermore I removed the mapping for my card from /etc/pcmcia/ config. We'll see how that works. I am currently waiting on the kernel-compulation as prism2_cs has not been found/built whatever (find /lib/modules/ - name *ism* didn't return anything). I now added links in /usr/src/modules/pcmcia-cs to /usr/src/ pcmcia- and the same for linux-wlan-ng. I also added --added-modules=pcmcia-cs and > > > There is no kernel citizenship hierarchy. With "not first class" I mean, that to me it is way harder to learn yet another way to compile the kernel. Disk I/O stalling whole system ..
Hi, when copying from one ide disk to another ide disk on the the same controller the whole systems stalls. I am running 2.4.19 on unstable. When renicing the copying processes it works ok, but I am not sure if that is the solution. And if that is, how would I do this efficiently. Looking a top and renicing by hand is a bit annoying to me ;-) Cheers, Mariano -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

How to secure WLAN access?
Hi, a couple of words about my boxes set up at home. I have one box, rock, connected to a dsl-router on one interface, outside interface, and the remaining boxes on another interface, inside interface. On rock I use shorewall/iptables for NAT and blocking all incoming tcp/ip connections. So far so safe, I believe. (Un)fortunately I also have a wlan access point plugged on to the inside interface. I am currently using WEP128 with shared keys on a netgear 802.11/g access point to encrypt the traffic. I am running a wide range of protocols from different devices though the access point. Some devices, like my palm tungsten c, do know about vpns, some computers like the notebooks friends bring over don't (at least not yet). If I can't get the latter solved, that would be acceptable to me. Still I would appreciate having a solution for that too. As I am with it, I also hate to give away the WEP encryption keys to my visitors. This is not so much a matter of lack of trust, but it doesn't feel the right way to me. From what I've read so far this is pretty unsafe (the WEP part). Sniffing through a couple of messages I got the feeling that setting up a vpn would be the solution to at least my major concern, getting rid of WEP. Would this be the right approach? Did anybody do this and cares to share the experience made? Was it hard to implement? I am not an admin wiz. Do I need to in order to get a small and simple vpn up and running? Would I need a third network card to put into rock in order to separate the wlan clients "physically" and ease setting up things with the vpn and the firewall? What about performance? I'd like to play online games over wlan and am concerned about latence. I am not looking for something sophisticated for the sake of technology per-se. Quite on the contrary I just want nobody browse my filesystem/samba shares. If there is something easier and still safe, I would go for it. Would it make sense instead of utilzing a vpn to to run some kind of authentication over http first and what would that mean in terms of effort to get it going? That were a lot of questions. All hints are appreciated. Cheers, Mariano -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Desktop launchs recent programs when logging in
Hi, using Gnome with woody it always launches a couple of programs I recently used (like xemacs, xterm etc.). It also does launch more instances every time I login. I greped through all directories starting with a dot for xterm and xemacs, but haven't found anything. Where is stored what I recently launched and what is the proper way to deal with it? Instead of logging out I do usually su to root and use "halt" to shutdown the system. Is this part of the problem? How to format and partitionate a disk?
Hi, did I get it right that there is no tool available at installation time to partitionate a hard drive? --- Another question. I have a box with SuSE left and want to upgrade it to debian. The box has now two hds and I want to keep the second drive for the time beeing and after the new system is alive and kicking I will format it. What do I need to do to get the drive formated and to install a journaled file system? What journaled file systems are mature enough to be used? reiserfs? I don't expect exhaustive answers, though I would appreciate them ;-), but would like to get some pointers to specific documentation. Jamin, thanks for your help. > > What do I need to do to get the drive formated and to install a > > journaled file system? > > Use a boot kernel that supports the file system you're after. The bf2.4 > kernel supports ext3. Ok, but I don't intend to format a second drive during the installation process, because it is the backup of the data I want to use. I was looking for the something like: format /dev/hda6 and use reiserfs :-) Btw. Reiser is not supported in bf2.4?! > > What journaled file systems are mature enough to be used? reiserfs? > > That's somewhat like asking a thousand people which is the best flavor of > ice cream. You're bound to get several votes for each one. In the end it > comes down to your opinion. Well, I am just looking for some journaled file system to be used on a single processor machine. I would go for the file system which is the easiest to install and wouldn't punish me with beeing extraordinary slow. Kernel Panic | boot | Unable to mount root fs | Reiser FS
Hi, a couple of hours ago I used to have a SuSE 8.1, Kernel 2.4.18, system with an ide and scsi drive. The system used to boot from the scsi drive. During this morning I wanted to _upgrade_ the system to debian. Therefore I started the woody installation from cdrom and partitioned the hd with the provided tool from the installation menu. I created three primary partitions: * /dev/sda1 8 MB, Type Linux * /dev/sda2 512 MB, Type Swap * /dev/sda317 GB, Type Linux I initialized /dev/sda2 as swap, /dev/sda1 as ext3 and /dev/sda3 as reiserfs. /dev/sda3 has been mounted as "/". [ ... loads of installation details omitted ... ] The last step before rebooting was to make the system bootable. I selected A. to boot from /dev/sda1 B. to boot from /dev/sda3 I repeated the steps a couple of times and can't remember each step exactly, but I've been asked to confirm that having an IDE and SCSI drive can result in not beeing able to boot from the SCSI drive. I don't believe that this is the problem though as it is working fine with the previous installation with SuSE. No matter if I used A or B when booting the machine it says "L " and then adds "01 " constantly. No LILO, no nothing. Using the CDROM to boot the system and issuing the following commands at the lilo prompt A. rescue boot=/dev/sda B. rescue boot=/dev/sda1 C. rescue boot=/dev/sda3 Linux comes up, but panics. The last lines read like this: [network stuff] Partition check: hda: [PTBL] [2433/255/63] hda1 hda2 < hda5 hda6 > [ apm stuff ] request_module[block-major-58]: Root fs not mounted VFS: Cannot open root device 3a:05 Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 3a:05 Any ideas? Should I try something else but Reiser fs? What type would I have to had set when using cfdisk for Reiser fs? Any help is greatly appreciated, Mariano Woody, installation from retailed cd, Compaq SP750, One XEON1G, 512MB -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Re: Kernel Panic | boot | Unable to mount root fs | Reiser FS
Seneca, thank you. That was an impressive answer. > Does your kernel have reiserfs support compiled into it ( not module)? > You can check in /boot/config-$KERNEL To be honest .. I don't know for certain if I can give you the right answer to it. I started from the cd with bf24 and when going to the console there is no /boot/config-$KERNEL. For the system I wanted to install I was going for the standard kernel bf24, selected ReiserFS as my filesystem and expected it to work. So I believe I am in a kind of chicken and egg situation here. I cannot boot the system, because I want the root filesystem to be ReiserFS, but debian bf24 ships without, so that I am not able to compile a new kernel. I do have a notebook with debian running and I guess it would be possible to compile a foreign kernel there, but to be honest I am a newbie to Linux especially to Debian and don't believe in my skills here. I guess I have to go for a non-journaling file system for the time being and have to wait for the next version of debian hopefully including ReiserFS. On a second thought I just have an 18 GB and a 40GB drive attached and fsck shouldn't run to long. Coming from SuSE I was just used to use it. Anyway, thanks very much for your detailed answer. I've learned a lot here. Re: Kernel Panic | boot | Unable to mount root fs | Reiser FS
Hi Alan, ok, it's good to hear that it would be possible to use ReiserFS out of the box. Still I am wondering which problem I did hit then? In the posting of Seneca he quoted the explanation regarding the lilo error messages. As far as I understood there is a serious problem with my hard disk, which is unlikely as the machine was running the same way (i.e. booting from SCSI and using ReiserFS) with SuSE. I was unsure what to do with the type of partition when fdisking my hd. I left the type as "eightysomething - linux" as I haven't found ReiserFS as a vaild type. Btw. Is it possible to boot from a ReiserFS partition? Hi, no need to further look at the problem. I am now using the ide drive as my primary drive and that seems to work. Re: Needed: Hardware recommendateons for Wireless Networking
Hi Thomas, I am using the Sony Access Point and the Sony card. The card works fine with Linux (PCWA-C100, Orinoco Driver), but the access point can only be configured from windows which stinks. Both, but especially the access point, is pretty expensive and I wouldn't go for it again. I remeber having paid almost 500 EUR for the access point and it is nothing, but an access point. You can get an access point with DSL and dhcp server for less. Cheers, Mariano On Sun, 2002-11-03 at 19:29, Thomas H. Playing .bin files in mplayer and xine
Hi, I've got a couple of .bin files, which I believe are svcds, aren't they? I can play them with kplayer, but it is horrible as the sound is skipping. Xine on the other hand won't play them and reports that it couldn't find a demux?! Any chance to play these files without skipping? Would it make sense to add more "demuxer"(?) to xine? If so, how? Any project for turning linux into a hd video recorder?
Hi, I remember stumbling over an article some time ago. It was on, I believe, slashdot referring to an assembly project with the goal of turning a linux box with a tv card into some sophisticated vcr, with electronic programm guide and also the ability to stream videos and to record from the tv program. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find this article again and google didn't spit out anything I found useful (maybe the wrong keywords). Any ideas? Hi, k3b was working fine until July or something. Currently, when I try to burn a file (data cd), and want to select the drive to use there are no devices to chose from. Hi, first of all thanks to all people responding. > Was it MythTV? I stumbled on it once too. Looks pretty cool. I'd try it > if I was into watching TV. > http://www.mythtv.org/ Freevo and mythtv look both very cool. I haven't been able to dig up a in depth comparison, but used the below mentioned messag to make a first judgement and go for mythtv. http://lists.snowman.net/pipermail/mythtv-users/2003-May/003496.html Two points important to me are a) that currently have the tv card plugged into my firewall as this is the only machine which is permanently switched on and has large hdds. I know that this is not perfect, but for pragmatic reasons and a very restrictive firewall I believe that is ok. As a consequence I need to be able to get along with the capturing and serving without X11 involved. On a first look MythTV seems to do the job ... ?! b) I'd like to watch german tv (actually I'd like to watch american/english tv, but that is not served here). That doesn't seem to be a problem with both projects as they both seem to rely on http://membled.com/work/apps/xmltv/. Btw. At the bottom of the page is a nice listing of projects using xmltv. A good start for looking for other projects. The first obstacle in installing MythTv is, that I haven't been able to install it. I had a look at www.apt-get.org and found http://www.apt-get.org/search.php?query=myth&submit=Submit&arch%5B%5D=i386&arch%5B%5D=all. But when trying to i apt-get install mythtv it complains missing library versions. # apt-get install mythtv Reading Package Lists... Done Building Dependency Tree... Hallo Henning, I am not sure if I got you right. 1) I added cdrom to my groups: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ groups mkamp cdrom audio cdrecording 2) Restarted KDE. Ksoftirq running wild .. What is it?
Hi, a process called ksoftirqd_CPU0 is eating up my cpu ... I recently returned from apm suspend and now this process eats 95% of my cpu. Oddly enough I am not able to kill it with kill -9 pid. As to the high CPU usage, it would > appear that either it really has a lot of work to do, or it's a sampling > issue. I doubt it has much to do, as it happened just once after wakeup. It *usually* doesn't eat up my cpu. Having said that I need to admit that I still don't know what soft irqs are and what a sampling issue is. To save myself from another hint to search the fine web: I found that, but I am not much smarter after browsing through it. http://wwwos.inf.tu-dresden.de/~ch12/doc/dde_linux/softirq_8c.html Anyway. It seems odd *to me* as it doesn't happen often and it doesn't seem to calm down again. > At any rate, I would suggest not to kill -9 everything that is unknown > on sight. It might be important. Oh really? Lol, ok I will take that into consideration in the future. To be serious again, what should I do in such a case? Reboot the machine would be the only other option I could think of and that reminds me too much of the other os. I've seen that a process id of "4" hints to an important system process and top also showed that the cpu was eaten up by a system process, so I understood that the process might be important, but I issued sync as a precaution and then tried to kill the process. Wouldn't that be enough precaution for most cases, I mean better than rebooting? Until kill -9 doesn't seem to take effect I believed in kill -9 as the last resort which will eventually kill a process. This doesn't seem to the case. > > Any idea what this process does? > > STFW. http://lwn.net/2001/0726/a/ugly.php3 > In short: That is, as the name suggests, a kernel daemon handling soft > IRQs which hannot be handled at the spot. Problem with X / NV / GLX / unstable
Hi there, I am running unstable (and the latest xserver from unstable and the nv bin module) and haven't restarted my xserver for a couple of days. Today I dist-upgraded (as I did before) and also restarted mit xserver. Unfortunately X is not working anymore. Meanwhile I pinned it down to the glx module and the following error messages: XSkipping "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libGLcore.a:debug_xform.o": No symbols found Skipping "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/fonts/libspeedo.a:spencode.o": No symbols found Symbol __glXLastContext from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libGLcore.a is unresolved! Re: How to compile a 2.5.x Kernel
Ok found g++ stupid me ... Now I get: scripts/kconfig/qconf.cc: In destructor `virtual ConfigItem::~ConfigItem()': scripts/kconfig/qconf.cc:291: error: non-lvalue in unary `&' And that doesn't tell me anything ... google told me that: http://groups.google.de/groups?q=/qconf.cc:+In+destructor+%60virtual+ConfigItem::~ConfigItem()%27:+scripts/kconfig/qconf.cc:291:+error:+non-lvalue+in+unary&hl=de&lr=&ie=UTF-8&selm=20030429095010%243d33%40gated-at.bofh.it&rnum=1 Someone changed the kernel sources to get it running. Alright ... I now believe Hugh was right. I am probably not up to the job. I was just assuming that shortly before 2.5. will turn into 2.6.x rc it would be installable by me, but was wrong. How to pass in a password to the ssh command line client?
Hi, I am using eclipse (http://eclipse.org) to access a cvs repository by using ext:. The problem is that it asks for the ssh password on the command line. Anything I can do to pass it in automatically? The short help of ssh looks like this: mkamp@hamlet:~$ ssh Usage: ssh [options] host [command] Options: -l user Log in using this user name. -n Redirect input from /dev/null. -F config Config file (default: ~/.ssh/config). -A Enable authentication agent forwarding. -a Disable authentication agent forwarding (default). -X Enable X11 connection forwarding. -x Disable X11 connection forwarding (default). -i file Identity for public key authentication (default: ~/.ssh/identity) -t Tty; allocate a tty even if command is given. -T Do not allocate a tty. -v Verbose; display verbose debugging messages. Multiple -v increases verbosity. -V Display version number only. -q Quiet; don't display any warning messages. -f Fork into background after authentication. -e char Set escape character; ``none'' = disable (default: ~). -c cipher Select encryption algorithm -m macs Specify MAC algorithms for protocol version 2. -p port Connect to this port. Server must be on the same port. -L listen-port:host:port Forward local port to remote address -R listen-port:host:port Forward remote port to local address These cause ssh to listen for connections on a port, and forward them to the other side by connecting to host:port. -D port Enable dynamic application-level port forwarding. -C Enable compression. -N Do not execute a shell or command. -g Allow remote hosts to connect to forwarded ports. -1 Force protocol version 1. -2 Force protocol version 2. -4 Use IPv4 only. -6 Use IPv6 only. -o 'option' Process the option as if it was read from a configuration file. -s Invoke command (mandatory) as SSH2 subsystem. -b addr Local IP address. I have also looked at the man page with not much of a success. I need something like a parameter -pw xyz to customize eclipse. Any ideas? Re: How to pass in a password to the ssh command line client?
Hi, I tried: ssh-agent ssh-add (entered passphrase) ssh [EMAIL PROTECTED] And Bang ... It is still asking for the passphrase ... Ok, whatsoever ... I stick to entering the password by hand. The funny thing is, that I created a key today for the first time, but was accessing this repository for months without entering the password manually. I wasn't working on that project for couple of weeks and now it is not working anymore. What I changed is: SuSe 8.0 -> Debian Stable/Testing/Unstable (same effect, no matter what version I use) and upgrading from eclipse 2.0.1 to 2.1 M4. Any of this changes or some change at sourceforge cut me off. X hangs (ATI MOBILITY RADEON 7500 on Sony VAIO PCG-8A6M, GRX316Gwith X)
Hi, I am not sure how to describe this problem properly. Basically my machine hangs every now and then. Sometimes it takes 20 minutes, sometimes five and it is also sometimes running for 60 minutes until it hangs. Hangs means, I cannot do anything anymore. At least CTRL+ALT+DEL/BS and CTRL+ALT+F1 do not work anymore. I do have the feeling that it happens usually when I am also accessing the disk, but it is very hard to be sure with these things. Is there any log I can have a look at? /var/log/messages and XFree86.0.log doesn't seem to have something meaningful regarding the crash in there. The last possibly relevant message is: xfs: ignoring font path element /usr/lib/X11/fonts/CID (unreadable). I do currently have X11 configured for "vesa". Is there any better driver for my card? How do I know? Cheers, Mariano -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
ACPI on notebooks? Can I burn my machine?
Hi, I use a Sony VAIO PCG-8A6M, GRX316G and wondering how I can tell if ACPI is setup and working? I read that it is possible to burn my laptop if ACPI is not activated. Is that true? And it always happens when I am doing something. It would be an interesting test to let the laptop run the whole night, but I am afraid to do that, because I read that my laptop will burn when ACPI is not working properly and I learned that there is no out of the box ACPI and I would need to learn how to patch a kernel etc. first. > > > I do have the feeling that it happens usually when I am also accessing > > the disk, but it is very hard to be sure with these things. > > Right, my laptop has died many times as I configured it over this weekend, > sometimes the DISK LED would stay on, sometimes it wouldn't. X hanging the whole system at startup
Hi, I installed woody and after booting the machine x hangs the whole machine (at least numlock doesn't work anymore). Is there anyway to interrupt the startup procedure to prevent x from starting? I am also wondering what the reason for that is? Issuing startx by hand does work. Does anybody know where I do set the window manager (xdm etc?). Still getting kernel panic when compiling my own kernel
Hi, I still haven't given up yet to compile my own kernel, but I am nearly there. Meanhwile I removed the kernel and the kernel source packages and installed them again. But even from the scratch without changing anything I get a kernel panic from my compiled kernel. Aren't the default settings being supposed to be the same as the standard kernel shipped? The standard kernel is working though. Problem is it doesn't support acpi out of the box and afaik I need acpi if I don't want to burn the processor on this particular machine (as described on linux-laptop.org). For the record .. I am using woody on a sony vaio grx316g. Btw. I also bought a null modem cabel to get the console messages from the kernel before the panic, but unfortunately I found out that my laptop has three usb, and firewire and ..., but not a serial port :-( Are there any other ways to see the kernel messages? I believe that the file system is not mounted at that point in time and probably because of that I don't see any relevant messages below /var/log. Hi Hanasaki, > I would not assume that the settings are the same. > > Run 'make menuconfig' and check > > Be sure of the following are compiled into the kernel: > ext2, ext3, reiserfs > ide & scsi support for your ide/scsi chips/boards Well, as I am trying this for three weeks now and tried more than thirty different kernels. I am not going to follow this path. My question is: How can I get the settings for the kernel shipped with woody (24.18-bf). It works. And I can start from there. Or .. Would it help to go to a newer version than woody? Would it have xfree 4.2 and acpi already built in? > > How are you getting to a shell to check /var/log not a file???> to look for messages if the kernel panics and halts? > Because I kept the standard kernel and added it to lilo. So I am able to resurrect the system, but obviously without the features I need (acpi). > If you need more specific help, provide more specifics on your process > and StepByStep results. > I did this a couple of times. See other postings. As I am very much suspecting the procedures to be the source of trouble (why else should not even one of my roll your own kernels work) I will go into the details again. apt-get remove kernel-source-2.4.18 kernel-package rm -rf /usr/src/linux rm -rf /usr/src/kernel-source-2.4.18.tar.bz2 rm -rf /lib/modules/2.4.18 apt-get install kernel-source-2.4.18 kernel-package cd /usr/src tar xvjf kernel-source-2.4.18.tar.bz2 ln -s kernel-source-2.4.18.tar.bz2 linux cd linux make-kpkg clean make-kpkg -config=x --revision=sonyVaioGrx316G kernel_image dpkg -i /usr/src/kernel-image-2.4.18_sonyVaioGrx316G_i386.deb reboot Hopefully I got the steps right. ACPI patch and other necessary things have been left out since two weeks to reduce complexity. I also attached the current .config file. But this doesn't make much difference as no config has worked so far. But as this one is a clean and untouched one, we probably can start from there. The only thing I changed is: CONFIG_IDE=y CONFIG_EXT3_FS=y Any help is appreciated. That is what I did all the time. This thread was about how to do it a different way. Anyhow it seems to work now. Still I've some problems, but need to dig into that. At least I am able to boot now and I am not sure what I did wrong before. I ***guess*** is was something about dpkg -i and my assumption that it does run lilo, because I now ran lilo by hand (to use the manual approach described by Klaus. So, I'll investigate further and come back to the list if it is still not working. Thanks to everyone for supporting me. Hi Hubert, I don't have a clue what this whole mapping thing was about (and honestly I don't care too much ;-), but now gtk-demo is working. Now I get "libXm.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory" when I try to run eclipse, but I will try to dig something up myself first. Great! Thank you. Mariano ps. Where to get the new installer?
Hi, I am stuck with the woody installer. It doesn't have a current rhine driver (see next posting). I tried with an alpha version of the new installer, but it always fails after discovering usb. This also happens with the new net-installer. When trying to download the beta from debian.org (http://gluck.debian.org/ cdimage/testing/netinst/i386/beta-1/sarge-i386-netinst.iso) I always get a 404. I guess this is related to the security issue. For whatever reason: I am not able to get my hands on it. When downloading sarge from one of the mirrors it comes with the old installer. Any idea where the new installer is mirrored (I found some reference to debian-developer sites, which are also down)? It works with Knoppix (besides a lcd-screen issue). Any idea how bad it is to start out with Knoppix and then use it as a Debian system? Cheers, Mariano -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Cheap PC / unknown components. ALDI/Medion MD 8080 XL anyone?
Hi, I bought one of the "cheap" PCs from a german discounter. I am wondering if anybody has been able to install Debian on it? Any pointers would be nice. www.linux-hardware.de wasn't helpful. Allmost all the components are unknown when looking at the /proc/pci output. This is interesting, because I believe they used "brand" components. My guess is that they are a little bit modified to make sure that prices are not easily comparable. Is this likely to be true? What I don't want is a Knoppix System. I want debian. Looking at the etc directory and some other stuff, I believe there are differences between Knoppix and Debian. Yes, in theory it should work on Debian when it works on Knoppix, but when having to use the old installer then the modules are very much out of date. In this particular example, I don't get the network up, so it is pretty much pointless to use the old installer. Btw. The old installer was not even able to cope with a 160GB hd. Thanks for clearing that up. The discounter is called ALDI and the Modell is Medion MD 8080 XL as described in the subject. If this is of interest I could post a /proc/pci output, but it is pretty meaningless as it in most cases says "unknown type". The box itself is a p4 3ghz, 512 mb ram, some intel board which I haven't figured out yet etc.etc. When I am able to get the network up and running an compile a current kernel I hope there will be more information. > Your original post is kind of like saying "What type oil filter do I > need for my cheap import car?" Well, I did two postings at the same time, because I thought it would be easier to divide the problem in two topics: a) Anyone also using this particular computer and help with aquiring the new installer. > It sounds like the Debian installer you have has an older kernel that > doesn't recognize your hardware. Absolutely. The via-rhine module is to old in woody (see my other posting). The module from knoppix *and* the new installer does work. Unfortunately the new alpha version of the new installer stops working at some point (usb-discover) and I am not able to get my hands on the beta version as gluck is down. So my second and more important questions is: Anybody mirroring the new installer (see other posting)? > Do you have the Woody set of CDs, or > are you installing from a disk your got when you bought a magazine two > years ago, or what? Do you have the ability to burn a new CD from the > network? If so, try getting the fourth CD in the Woody set (should have > a 2.4 kernel), or an unofficial sid CD that maybe has a newer kernel. Well, I booted from the first woody cd and apart from the installer not being able to work with my whole hdd (just 120 of 160 gb) I am able to install the base system. When trying to setup the network to upgrade to sid I have the a.m. problem with my card I am stuck so far. Thanks for taking the time. Compiling 2.6: Cannot stat "conf.vars"
Hi, I am trying to compile 2.6.0-test9 on i386/debian/unstable. When running: make-kpkg --revision=medion3g --config=menuconfig clean kernel_image That's what I get: [..] (copied by hand) install -p -o root -g root -m 644 conf.vars debian/tmp-image/usr/share/doc/ kernel-image-2.6.0-test9/conf.vars install: cannot stat "conf.vars": No such file or directory [..] It's my first 2.6 compile and I am a bit lost here. I created the missing file with touch, but it is removed in the process of doing kernel_image. I googled for conf.vars and make-kpkg, but haven't found anything useful regarding this problem. Same for /usr/share/doc/kernel-source-2.6.0-test9/ debian.README and README.debian. Also zgrep -i conf.vars on the mentioned directory didn't yield any results. Any ideas? Hi, welcome to Debian. A great choice ;-) The 128KBits line is a burden, but that should only be a problem if you are tracking unstable/sid. From yesterday to today I got 140 MB download (that is one day), but this won't happen if you go for testing/sarge. Between two releases of a package is a minimum gap of 10 days (afaik). What kind of system are you setting up? A webserver you want to put on the net and never want to spare a second thought on it? Woody is probably good for you here. If you want more current software and are willing to take a little risk go for testing/sarge. Go to /etc/apt/sources.list and replace all "stable" with "sarge". Enter "apt-get update" to update your package database and "apt-get dist-upgrade" for upgrading the whole installation. This will also add new packages which you haven't had before, but are now available in the "stock" sarge distro. You likely will have to download more than 100 MB. The good thing is that you can interrupt the download process at any time and resume just there when doing an dist-upgrade again. Only problem with sarge is, that for some package with loads of dependencies it takes a long time to trach it. KDE 3.1 has taken ages. It is neccessary though to delete the existing kernel source package (save .config) first, to re-get it and then everything works fine! Q:No modconf in 2.6?
Hi, I just installed 2.6 and to my surprise it came up nicely on first try. When trying to install modules though, modconf didn't show any? Is there another tool to be used. I've also seen this bug: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=192232 Would that mean that there is no other way than modprobe to manage modules at the moment? ATI Radeon 9800 XL / XFree 4.3?
Hi, I have an ATI Radeon 9800 XL card and want to use it with debian/unstable Kernel 2.6. From what my googling turned up so far I would need XFree 4.3? In unstable I "only" found XFree 4.1. On apt-get.org I found XFree 4.3 for woody. Would I be able to use it? Any other place I can go for? Cheers, Mariano -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Thanks very much for the information. Actually one reason I was going for this computer was that I thought I could get rid of the nvidia troubles and get all I need from mainstream. From what I understand so dar that even would'nt be the case when XFree 4.3 would have been in Debian already, right? So I need to lookup alien to get this rpm driver to work, right? Any d-u equivalent for Mac OS X?
Hi, I recently bought an Apple pb and now I realize with horror that d-u is not the right place for my questions anymore ;-) At least not for the pb related ones. Anyway, any good suggestion for a good list on OS X related stuff? Cheers, Mariano -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
How to delete folders in Cyrus21/IMAP not under INBOX?
Hi, I am running an instance of cyrus for myself. Problem is, I can create and remove folders below INBOX, but I am not able to remove folders I've created on the same level as INBOX. Any idea? Is there any admin gui? I stumbled over this problem as the IMAP support for folders with names containing umlauts is broken in Mail from macintosh (this bug has been introduced with the latest version - their testing ** really ** sucks). So I tried to remove the folders with umlauts, but am not able to. Permission Denied! Cheers, Mariano -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Hi Henrique, thanks for taking the time. Did you create these as an IMAP administrator perchance? Well, to be perfectly honest - I don't remember. How can I check that out? It is sometime ago that I installed it, but I believe that I made my user an admin. However I didn't create those folders with cyradm, but with an email client. Btw. I created folders with different email clients. Anyway, log in as an administrator using cyradm, give yourself delete-folder rights using "sam" and then delete the folder. Well, I tried that yesterday and it didn't work. Today it worked. Great. It was probably something about the weekday ;-) Thanks for your help! Problem with X in unstable, screen resolution isn't set to the configured values
Hi, since a couple of weeks I have the above described problem. My monitor shows that I run with 1024x768. The funny thing is that this resolution is nowhere to be found in my XF86Config-4 (see attached file). I assumed that this was part of the problem with the gcc bug, but meanwhile I don't see why that is and the thread on debianplanet.org faded out, so that I am now trying to have a look at it again. The only thing I found in the log (see attached file), which *I* consider funny is that: (WW) NVIDIA(0): Failed to verify AGP usage (II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "1024x768" I googled for "x unstable debian screen resolution" and "Failed verify AGP debian x" with not much of a success. I'd also like to mention that it was working perfectly until some weeks ago and I didn't change anything, but letting the dist-upgrade on unstable run. Any ideas? Any more information I can provide? Hallo Florian, thanks very much for your help. I am using an LCD screen (forgot to mention this in first place ;-() and after setting both max boundaries to 100 everything works as smoothley as before. I made a backup of the current XF86Config-4 file and will restore it after the next dist-upgrade. I also applied the tip regarding the mouse.
