pack/compress?
(please cc: replies to me, i am not on this list) it strikes me as odd that the standard potato doesn't seem to include the pack huffman coder or compress lzw compressor. while these are fairly obsoleted by gzip, especially as gunzip will read .z and .Z files, they still are mildly useful. am i blatantly wrong and there's actually some package containing them, or should i just write my own copies? --p. termcap/info help
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 i frequently login to a remote freebsd system. freebsd uses termcap. is there a way to convert my linux and xterm-debian entries from terminfo to termcap format? tic *claims* to be able to convert terminfo *source* to termcap but it doesn't work; even if it did it doesn't know how to convert terminfo binary to source (i had to do it on the termcap-using other system... odd, huh?). are there any veterans in the battle against terminfo databases on this list? if not, is there anyone who knows what list i should be writing to? tia, - --p. unix98 pty system
i'm about to switch to kernel 2.2.0pre6, and in the configuration i saw that i can use the unix98 pty system rather than the old ptyxx/ttyxx. if i do this, will important things (i.e. xterm, incoming telnets) break? --jonathan 'phouchg' tomer
Re: unix98 pty system
ok, so if i grab glibc2.1 i can use unix98 ptys? or will everything break on glibc2.1? --phouchg
xfree 3.3.4 debs
does anyone know where i can get xfree86 3.3.4 debs? 3.3.5 is toast for me, unfortunately. (if replying to the list, please cc me, i am not subscribed.) thanks, --p. network card problem
i'm installing two new pcs at work, one with solaris x86 and one with debian so that i can show my employer how much nicer debian is. unfortunately there is one major problem: the hamm cd i have is not successfully detecting the ne2k (well, encore enl832tx, which has a realtek chipset according to the tech support guy) pci 10/100 ethernet card on the machine. i've read the ethernet-howto and disabled pnp support in the bios in case it was causing problems, but i can't directly disable pnp on the card. solaris did detect it fine. any ideas as to how to get this working? please keep me cc'd to the reply, i am not subscribed to -user. tia, phouchg "For a price I'd do about anything, except pull the trigger: for that I'd need a pretty good cause" -- Queensryche, "Revolution Calling" PGP 5.0 key (0xE024447449) at http://cif.rochester.edu/~jpt/pubkey.txt
silly question
(please cc: me to replies) is it currently possible to do a straight potato initial install, or must one first install slink's base system and then aptify? --phouchg "For a price I'd do about anything, except pull the trigger: for that I'd need a pretty good cause" -- Queensryche, "Revolution Calling" PGP 5.0 key (0xE024447449) at http://cif.rochester.edu/~jpt/pubkey.txt
