i386 debian to 64bit intel
Hi, I am new to linux and made the mistake of loading the i386 Debian release 10 onto my 64bit intel system. I now want to put the 64bit version for intel on the system. Do I have to backup the data I have in my $HOME directory to load after loading the 64bit version or can I in someway just load the the OS over the i386 OS and retain the $HOME contents? Jerry jfmel...@netscape.net I am a user on the lists. Thanks for your attention to this.
i386 on 64bit intel ??change to 64bit Debian?????
Thanks for all the great answers to my question. Some are beyond my knowledge but appreciated just the same. But I think I will just do a good backup to DVD and install Debian 10.6 on a clean system and then replace my files. So thanks again for all the info, I will file it away for the day that I can understand all of it. Thanks! Jerry jfmel...@netscape.net
Debian 10 64bit
I finally got around to installing debian 10 on my 64bit system(thus removing the i386version I had originally instaled). The install went well and I asked for a seperate Home particion. When I booted the system and try to do "apt-get update and apt-get upgrade" using "sudo" it would not let me do that. Said I was not a sudo user. I then tried "su root" which failed as well as it said I was not a sudo user. I went to the sudouse file and changed it to make me a user. Sudo as myself worked fine but su root still did not work. After seeing the email concering problems with sudo and su root I decided to reload. I did but did a use whole disk (no home part). After booting I did have to go to the sudouser file an change it again but the su root worked with out a problem. Only saying all of this because of the email chatter on sudo and su root. Thanks for the attention a great info. Jerry

Re: Debian 10 64bit
Hi, When I installed Debian 10 the %sudo ALL=(ALL:ALL) ALL had a "#" in front of it. Does the "%" have the same function as the "#"? Jerry
Re: Debian 10 64bit
I installed the Debian 10 64bit from the disks(16) that I purchased. No down load from outside involved. Jerry PS Not trying to cause a problem, just telling you what I had to todo.
Re: Debian 10 64bit
Here is the sudoers contents. /etc/sudoers # User privilege specification rootALL=(ALL:ALL) ALL # Allow members of group sudo to execute any command sudoALL=(ALL:ALL) ALL
Re: Debian 10 64bit
Well all I can say is, it works. The Disks I purchase were from https://ShopLinuxOnline.com/ . Received 16disk and did not have any problems with them. They were all marked Debian 10.6 Buster 64 Bit(amd64) with the Debian Logo. I am the only user on my laptop, an ASUS gaming machine Core i7. I gave up on Windows 10 after one of the so called updates corrupted the system so bad I could even boot. So I switched to Linux and I am learning a lot, mostly from the Debian-user list. Thanks again. Jerry

Re: Add a hard drive to existing system??
Hi, The Asus that I have is G75V series. It has 2 hdd bays onboard. The 500mv is the drive that is current installed and Debian 10.7 is installed. I have purchased another 2T Segate drive that will go into the empty bay. I don't want to do anything fancy, just install and update fstat. The question is what do I do in fstat to set it up. Currently the fstab file reads as follows. All, New drive install this morning, appears tobe functioning without a problem. I had some hicups with the fstab file at to the layout, but got it after some head scratching as to the layout of the file. Again thanks to all for the great help. The fstab with the new drive now reads, # /etc/fstab: static file system information. # # Use 'blkid' to print the universally unique identifier for a # device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name devices # that works even if disks are added and removed. Evolution & ThunderBird
Hello, New user having trouble with evolution. I think that I have it setup correctly, but it will not login to my email accounts. At the bottom of screen it is scanning the email server from my login but then a box pops up indicating that there was an error trying to login and asks for the password, which I supply and box closes only to return shortly with the same response. I have used the account on my other system and no problem so the account is OK. I tried to download Thunderbird to give it a try but it is missing some dependencies an will not load. -- Jerry Mellon 501 Los Caminos St St Augustine FL 32095 407.461.9216 jfmel...@netscape.net
