PDF presentation from LaTeX: TexPower? Prosper?
Hi all. I'm using Sarge, and need to put together a presentation that will be burnt on a CD, and taken to a conference where it will be loaded in Acrobat and projected on a screen. The samples in TexPower (already PDFs) look pretty cool, but if I try running the sample tex file, and then viewing with xdvi, then it's generally a mess (I would like to do something similar to picexample.tex). The text is displayed in portrait orientation, rather than landscape, with the text running off the page. I also get an error Package texpower Warning: Package soul not loaded. but I do have a file: /usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/misc/soul.sty So I have two questions: 1. Has anyone had any luck reproducing something like picexample.pdf or picexample.ps from the picexample.tex? If so, was it necessary to download other tex packages and where should they reside? How do I tweak the output to have it in landscape form? 2. Can anyone strongly recommend another latex package (Prosper?) supplied by debian that would allow me to insert a bunch of EPS figures and math formulas, and produce an electronic presentation that can run on Acrobat Reader. setlocale comma decimal question: GRACE and GMT
I am using Debian sarge, and have two applications which I use to create maps (GMT, Generic Mapping Tools) and plots (GRACE). The problem I have is that a journal that I am submitting to requires the use of a comma instead of a point for the decimal. The data I am inputting into the two programs is in the form of xy and xyz data with decimal points, and I only need the comma on the output (numbers on the axis, numbers in the scale bar). I have addressed this question to the user groups at GMT and GRACE with no response, so I thought maybe someone using Debian would have an answer: Does anyone have an example of a bash script that would use setlocale to temporarily call on LC_NUMERIC to output comma decimals (and then switch back to the dot for the decimals afterwards)? samba-client lprng kernel? problems
I recently recompiled my kernel using kernel-source-2.4.22 in testing. I included samba file system support in the kernel. Previously, I had no problem printing on two printers on different WIN200 machines on our network but now I can't. The print jobs just stay in the /spool/lpd/printer directory. The funny thing is that I have no problem seeing the workstations and their printers if I login with XSMBrowser or TkSmb. I tried using dpkg-reconfigure samba, and set it as daemons rather than inetdshould this make a difference? I've gone through all of the tests in the lprng-doc cookbook. ghostscript, apsfilter, and SMB/WIN client question
Hi all, Happy New Year. Thought I'd finish out the year with one newbiesque question. At work, I'm trying to print from my Debian box (woody) on a Lexmark Optra M412 (a postscript compatible laser printer) connected to a networked Windows machine. I'm presently using apsfilter and lpr (although I had exactly the same problem using lprngtool and lprng). Anyway, below is my present /etc/printcap. I tried two settings, one named kinetics, the other named ghostprint. I can print just fine from most applications, including Evolution, Gnumeric,Gimp, Acrobat Reader and Galeon. Where I have problems is with gv and gnome-gv. Strangely enough,KGhostview prints just fine with ghostprint. Any idea why gv and gnome-gv don't print? gconf gconf2 problem with Sarge

woody and freeamp
I noticed that free-amp is listed in under testing if I use "Search Package Directories" on the web. The link to the download, however goes to potato, rather than testing. If I do an "apt-get install freeamp" my sources list (testing main contrib non-free) cannot find freeamp, since it is listed in potato. Is this an oversight in the Package Directories? Also, has anyone gotten freeamp from unstable working with testing? I'd like to use it to play ogg files rather than xmms. Thanks
Kernel upgrade question: apt-kpkg??
I've upgraded my kernel before, with the ususal procedures. I noticed in Debian Planet http://www.debianplanet.org/debianplanet/sections.php?op=viewarticle&artid=4 the suggestion that it is better after using "make menuconfig" or "make config" to make a kernel package from the kernel_image, using "make-kpkg kernel_image", and then "dpkg -i" on the package that is created. I can see how this would be useful if I had a number of identical boxes. The suggestion is that this is "safer and easier" even for users of single Linux boxes. Before I upgrade to 2.4.1, is there any merit to this? It seems like the extra steps wouldn't be easier, especially if I have to make changes to the kernel_image. Any idea how this might be "safer" ? Thanks, Glen

apt-get and dpkg broken
Hi again. Sorry to pester about this. apt-get does not work with testing (Woody) for me anymore. Nor does dpkg. The problem is with dpkg-preconfigure, I think. Re: Modem Supra Express 56i
The ISA Supra Express 56i cards work, PCI cards don't. See: http://www.idir.net/~gromitkc/20010302a.html I have an ActionTec PCI call waiting card that works (It took a bit of tweaking, but their web page explains how). gnome-pilot conduits on woody
I've just started playing around with my Palm Pilot using gnome-pilot. Gnome-calendar looks good, GnomeCard would be better if the addresses could be integrated into the address list of some internet mail client. Does Woody have a decent mail client, where I could transfer mail on and off the pilot through a Gnome conduit? Any other cool conduits (such as a document reader, composer)? Thanks, Glen
No libforms0.89 -> no Lyx
Thanks to Mike for the tip that got the X4 upgrade in testing working for me. I'm a happy camper again. I also noticed that Lyx was removed during a recent upgrade in "testing". I tried to reinstall it but found that it requires libforms0.89 Since Lyx is (in my opinion) one of the best document editors around, I was wondering if anyone else had worked around this problem. libforms0.89-bin and libforms0.89-dev are both listed in the online list of packages, but just plain libforms0.89 is missing. I cannot apt-get install any of the 3. Suggestions? Thanks in advance Glen

RE: XF 4.0 PROBLEMS
You probably don't want to mix release versions (In other words, if you are going to use woody, then you should have all of your sources pointing to woody or testing). I had the exact same message as you, and fortunately someone was able to help me out last month First you want to do an apt-get install xserver-rage128 if you haven't already. That way, if you run xf86config, your video card will be there (I have an Xpert 98, and it works fine). You want to change the symbolic link for X to point to your new version of XFree86. Something like: ln -i -s /usr/bin/X11/XFree86 /etc/X11/X Hope that works -Glen
Perl warning on woody apt-get revisited
I still get warnings when using apt-get. I've tried using dpkg to install perl-5.6 and perl-5.6-base. It does not remove perl-5.005. If I try to do dpkg -r or apt-get-remove with perl-5.005, I have all sorts of dependency problems. So I have both perl versions installed. Do I have to force a replacement of 5.005 by 5.6? If so, how might I go about that (without breaking all of the applications that depend on it)? Thank you for your help and suggestions (Sorry if I have had to ask about the problem more than once to get it straightened out) -Glen I get something similar to this, whenever I use apt-get dist-upgrade. Re: Perl warning on woody apt-get revisited
Just one more newbie question. If I run perl -V:d_setlocale using the gnome desktop, I get the error messages: > perl: warning: Setting locale failed. > perl: warning: Please check that your locale settings: > LANGUAGE = (unset), > LC_ALL = (unset), > LANG = "c" I don't have this problem if I login under KDE I'm running on a desktop PC. If I issue the commands: LC_ALL=en_US export LC_ALL it gets rid of the problem in gnome until I logout and login again. Should I include these in my .bashrc or /etc/profile ? Or is there a better way to solve this? Thanks, Glen
gdm and xdm question
I recently added a usb-mouse to a Linux box and decided to do a clean reinstall with an unofficial woody image, and an upgrade to the 2.4.6 kernel. (This turned out to be much more difficult than just doing a dist-upgrade to testing from potato that I had done on another computer). Anyway, the mouse works great and XFree86 appears to be configured correctly (I think..). The gdm menu pops up fine, but if I try to open gnome the screen goes black and then returns to the login menu (gdm). I am only using debian sources (not Ximian, Progeny, or the others), and seem to be missing something. I did an apt-get install of gnome-core, gnome-control-center, gnome-admin, and sawmill-gnome I tried with xdm as well...the screen also goes black on login. Any hints on where to proceed? Thanks, Glen
gdm and xdm contd.
I guess I'll rephrase the question. I can't start gnome using gdm or xdm under a clean install of Woody that I just did. The screen goes black, then returns to the menu. Since the login menu displays ok and the curser moves fine, I don't think it is a problem with my xf86config. Any idea which log files should I look at to find out where the error is so I can find out what is configured wrong?...or ideas on which debs I should try purging and reinstalling? I can use pon to connect on the internet, so reinstalling portions of the distro are not a problem, but I would rather not reinstall everything from scratch. Thank you in advance, Glen

Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED] > > this sounds nice, how to do this? > thank you > markus First, back up any important files you might have. Your lilo.conf file will be changed as well, so just in case things don't work, have handy the rescue diskette that you made when you installed Debian. You just use apt-get install with the newest kernel-source for your distribution. That is kernel-source-2.2.19 for potato and kernel-source-2.4.7 for woody right now. You also need to apt-get install kernel-package. You then unzip and untar the downloaded file in /usr/src change into the directory which is created and use "make menuconfig" or "make xconfig" ("make config" will also work). You will have a menu with all of the kernel options as well as help with suggested settings. When you are done, you use make-kpkg to create a custom deb file with your new kernel. See the README file in /usr/doc/kernel-package for the details from there on out. The documentation is pretty good, and make-kpkg will set things up nicely. If you want to change things again (if you forget to enable ppp support or parallel port support, for example), go back to make menuconfig. Also change the custom name extension when you make the new deb file with make-kpkg (that's in the documentation). I was pretty nervous about rebuilding the kernel the first time, but once you see that you can always go back and change things, it is not bad at all (plan to spend a couple of hours on it the first time, though). You can also get good advice from the readme with the kernel source. Just drop the documentation after "make menuconfig" and follow the instructions in the documentation for kernel-package. -Glen
Help! All thumbs with prosper and/or seminar.sty in LaTeX
Hi. Has anyone produced transparencies using the version of prosper class in Debian "testing" . I've tried both the example in prosper and the examples in seminar and I have a problem with things bleeding of the page when I run latex, and then bizarre scrunched up ouput when I run tkdvi and no output when I run dvi2ps -c Being fairly new to LaTeX, I've had no problem producing journal documents using the provided templates and tkdvi, and either dvipdfm or dvi2ps. Any tips on how to make nice slides..I'm almost at the desperate stage of dumping all of my postscripts into PwrPoint :(
Re: Help! All thumbs with prosper and/or seminar.sty in LaTeX
I've tried a number of examples of both the prosper and the seminar style on the debian woody distibution. I think the problem has to do with page rotations, somehow. With prosper: I cannot create a pdf with dvipdfm, the image is just white with tkdvi or xgdvi. I can use a2ps and I get a postcript where the bounding box is off ,the image is upside down, and all of the nice tone changes that are supposed to be in the slide background are rendered as broad colored streaks. The only error I with a2ps is ignoring special PS operator "SDict" With seminar I've made some progress. tkdvi shows the first page ok, but the framing is wrong and as soon as I move to another page everything is jumbled up, even when I move back to the first. xgdvi shows the text, although the framing is messed up, as is the page centering. Fortunately, dvipdfm works fine and I can create pdf slides. LaTex will not make a dvi if I try to convert pages to portrait formit just works with landscape for me. So I guess I'll go with landscape seminar pdfs. I am curious why all of the others don't work, since I have not had problems with "article" class documents before. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Glen
Re: Help! All thumbs with prosper and/or seminar.sty in LaTeX
Thanks for the tipsI ran out of time on the project, but will try prosper next time around. Fortunately, I was able to get my overhead slides put together with the seminar class. A few things that worked for me (perhaps they will work for you with the prosper class as well) Once I made the tex file, and generated the dvi, I used the command: dvips -Ppsfonts -tletter -tlandscape -o file.ps file.dvi with the correct input and output file names. That gave me a postscript with the correct postscript fonts, which was US letter size. Then I used ps2pdf to generate the pdf file. I also stumbled across the texdoctk package in the process.it's nice to see all of the documentation in an organized form.
Re:latex docu
A really beautiful app for LaTeX documentation in texdoctk. It provides a centralized menu for all of the documentation and opens all of the documentation files regardless of whether they are tarred, as dvis, etc. I could find documentation there that I didn't even know I had. Unfortunately, texdoctk is only availble for woody and sid for the time being. I just tried something really cool, though, that works with woody and might work in potato. I generally use lynx to browse gzipped documentation, because it opens the files up automatically, and you can move back and forth fairly quickly. I just tried opening a dvi.gz file and lynx automatically opens it in xdvi.neat! Make sure you have lynx installed and just enter: lynx filename That should do it. -Glen

woody openssh quandary
The mailserver at my work has both ssh and ssh2 installed. I do not have any problem using ssh with a key generated with "ssh-keygen" on my woody box at home to check my mail at work. I figured I would try dsa though, and that's where I have problems. If I use "ssh-keygen -t dsa" at home to generate "id_dsa.pub" and then moving it over to "authorized_keys2" on "~/.ssh" at the server at work. When logging in with ssh, I get a prompt for my password, rather than my passphrase. The same happens if I generate "id_rsa.pub" at home and append it to "authorized_keys2" on the server at work. Re: woody openssh quandary
Pete Harlan wrote: When you say the work machine has ssh and ssh2 installed, do you mean openssh version 2 and non-free ssh2, or is the ssh something else? In any case, the nonfree ssh2 uses a different format for the dsa keys than the openssh version does, so you can't just blindly copy the key over. Specifically, the nonfree version breaks the key up into multiple lines like a PGP key, while the free version puts it all on one line. With some massage to the public key generated on a nonfree system, I was able to make it look like the keys generated on the free system and thereby let the nonfree ssh2 system log into our free system. I haven't tried the other way around. HTH, --Pete Hi. Thanks for the response. I am using openssh (ssh2.9p2), and logging into a remote server which has the non-free ssh2. I can only login using a ssh1 public key. Interestingly, I also have to specify "-1" when I am connecting or it will unsuccesfully try to connect with the ssh2 protocol. Perhaps it's something I have to edit something in my /etc/ssh/ssh_config so that the when I generate a dsa_id or rsa_id key locally in ~/.ssh/ and transfer it over to the remote server as authorized_keys2, then the authentication will be recognized and I will get some kind of passphrase prompt. Or should I create a local ~/.ssh/configuration file with something in it to show that I want to connect with a dsa key and to check authorized_keys2 rather than authorized_keys? I can also use ssh-agent and ssh-add to connect with the ssh1 protocol as well, but no dice with openssh (2?)rsa or dsa keys. Am I missing something, or is this as some have suggested a compatibility problem for the time being?? Thanks, Glen
Nautilus in Woody Questions
I installed Nautilus from testing, and let it redraw the desktop. I'm using sawfish with gnome. Nautilus drew some nice icons with sym-links. Anyway, it threw the icons underneath the Sawfish icons, so it looks lousy. I tried deleting the old icons, but they reappear when I login. I can't seem to drag them out of the way, either. Suggestions? Another oddity: If I open html files with Nautilus, they are displayed as raw html textincluding nautilus-help (I had to use konqueror to open it). Thanks in advance for any advice, Glen
Re:Nautilus in Woody Questions:Solved!
Thanks for the tips. I was running gmc at the same time as Nautilus was drawing the desktop.this leads to annoying double icons. As soon as I removed gmc from the session, the problem went away. Looking forward to nautilus-mozilla in woody. -Glen
gnome-apt and free-amp in woody
Hi all. gnome-apt and freeamp seem to have dropped out of testing for the time being. Has anyone who is running woody tried using dpkg to install either of these from sid or are there dependency problems? I guess I could live without themjust wondering though. Thanks, Glen
Re: GMT problems
I use GMT quite a bit on Debian, but I used the install script from gmt.soest.hawaii.edu I had to edit .bashrc to get it to work, as follows: #gmt variables export NETCDFHOME="/usr/local/src/netcdf-3.4" export GMTHOME="/usr/local/src/GMT3.3.6" export PATH="$PATH:$GMTHOME/bin" Your directories may be different, depending on where it is installed. You mentioned the following: psbasemap -JM5 -R0.5/2.0/58.9/59.8 -B0.25 -P -K > station.ps Is this the first line of your script, or the only line? If it is the only line, then drop the -K. I don't know about the Debian version, but the full GMT has example scripts. Have you tried running those? Hope that answers your question. You might want to check the mail archives from the GMT homepage. -Glen
Woody nukes Gnome
Just did an apt-get dist-upgrade I'm using Woody, and have not had any problem with ximian's Debian install of Gnome for the past couple months, until now. The upgrade trashes Gnome big time, as well as Sawfish, Gnumeric, you name it... It was something in the upgrade that was added just today500 k or so of upgrades and Gnome had a dependency tizzy. Help! Save me from KDE and black screens with command prompts! -Glen
HP Scanjet4200C
Hi Brian, I have had a 4200c for over a year now, and it took me quite awhile to get it working with Debian. Here's what I had to do: Go to Sourceforge and download the SANE drivers as tarballs. Download a patch for the 4200c and apply it to the SANE driver. Install the Patched SANE driver (I couldn't figure out how to use the DEBs for SANE because they don't have the patch applied) Hack a few lines in the scanner module file of your kernel and recompile the kernel (This is explained in the Source Forge page for the 4200c patch) You will need to be using a kernel with USB support. Make a link to the scanner. When you are done with this, then you will be able to use xsane to perform your scans. You won't be able to use the GIMP plugin for SANE, though. Also, the scanner produces weird distortions (the x axis is stretched out). In short, the 4200c is the most disappointing computer hardware purchase that I have made. The only reason I have Windows still on my computer as a dual boot is to use the scanner. I have seen no progress with the patch in 6 months or so, either. I will probably end up trying to trade it for another Linux-supported SANE-compatible scanner. -Glen
Re: Woody nukes Gnome
If I purge all of the ximian and helix files, that's practically every application I use99 packages not to mention the others that will probably be removed because of dependency problems. Debian Woody sets up gnome 1.0.56 Ximian "Woody" has installed 1.2.11 for some time now. I think an itsy-bitsy file like libart2 caused everything to cave in (that seems to be one of the files causing the problem). I've looked at the correspondence between the Ximian and Debianand accusations about who does not support who. It sounds like Ximian threw up their hands out of frustration when they said they would no longer offer support for testing. -Glen
Searching for an elusive Gnome
I finally got around to purging out all of the ximian, gnome, and helix files I have on woody, and attempting to reinstall Gnome after an apt-get update with only the following sources: deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian testing main contrib non-free deb http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US testing/non-US main contrib non-free I then did an apt-get upgrade -f and apt-get dist-upgrade Everything works fine (under KDE). My problem is that if I do apt-get install with either task-gnome-apps or task-gnome-desktop, it cannot find the new package. I get: Package task-gnome-apps has no available version, but exists in the database...blah blah blah. Suggestions on how I can reinstal Gnome will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance, Glen Snyder
Woody probs with kdelibs3
Hi again. I did another apt-get update (hoping that task-gnome-apps would turn up again). acroread, xpdf hassle
I've only seen this problem on one computer I use at work, which is running potato. If I try to open a pdf with acroread, the text repeats itself and then wraps over onto itself, making the document unreadable (this is with any pdf file). If I try to advance to another page, it locks up, crashes, or I get a segmentation fault. I've tried to purge acroread and reinstall.I've also tried deleting .acrorc , but the problem still reoccurs. I have a vodoo3 card and a viewsonic A75f monitor if that matters...and I do not have any other problems with display on other programs. Another issue...I can pull up the pdf files with xpdf. Although the files print ok on a ps printer, the letters all display with a dashed outline that is nearly illegible. I would imagine that this is a font server problem. Anyway...any ideas, suggestions...or anecdotes of similar experiences would be appreciated. Thanks, Glen

LaTeX problem
I'm using LaTeX from the Woody distrothere seems to be a bug (or I am doing something wrong). If I use \documentclass{article} and then use \pagestyle{empty} , it still insists on putting a page number on the bottom of the first page (although numbers are not on subsequent pages) when I generate a dvi. Hints or suggestions on how to suppress the page number are greatly appreciated. Thanks, Glen
Re: LaTeX problem
Thanks for the tips. Here is what I have figured out (and I still don't know why) but it may explain why some have reproduced this problem, and others haven't. -The problem only exists if you use \maketitle (If I comment out \maketitle, then placing \pagestyle{empty} before \begin{document} seems to work) -If I use \thispagestyle{empty} before \maketitle ,then it has no effect. -If I use \thispagestyle{empty} after \maketitle, then it does the trick and removes the first page number. -Glen
Woody flavors
I was wonderingas far as I can tell there are 5 Woody flavors, yet the unofficial cd-image mirrors seem to have 8 raw (iso) files. Could someone set me straight on this (since the readme doesn't help much in the way of outlining the general cd contents. ). I guess all of the different flavors are on the 1st cd.so what are on the others??? I thought I would make a cd to install from scratch that uses ext3 with kernel 2.4 (and there seems to be a kernel-image for 2.4 with ext 3 on the first cd, judging by the list) I've got a fast connection at school and a slow one at home (so I would rather burn all I can on cd). Anyway, are the last 3 (or last 7) image cds extra stuff (non-free and non-us?) Thanks, Glen
Diagrams with Dia: Help!
Has anyone been able to get dia to work worth a darn? I've tried it on two machines, one with woody and the other with potato. I've tried both dia-gnome and dia. I can draw just fine, can save it as a dia file, and can export as and eps file. When I try to open the dia file again, the sketch is off the edge of the axies, or one or more of the scroll bars lock, or I get messages like: ** WARNING **: v_len_sq is NaN while calculating bezier curve! Or even better: Gdk-CRITICAL **: file gdkpixmap.c: line 822 (gdk_pixmap_unref): assertion `pixmap != NULL' failed. This is really frustrating because it makes great diagramsand then I lose them. -Glen

Just a guess... I've seen similar messages with dpkg-preconfigure before in Woody before, but I've always managed work around them. You have to figure out which program causing dependency problems, purge it, and then reinstall it. Since I was using Storm Linux before, with Ximian programs, I had my share of purging out old packages before replacing the new ones until I have a "pure debian" system running woody. Have you tried: apt-get -f install ?? You might get a message on dependency problems, and then will have an idea what to remove. Also, if a program isn't working quite right, you can try apt-get install --reinstall programname Of course, since you are upgrading a whole bunch of programs, you have to figure out which are causing the problem You might also want to try dpkg -l | grep ximian dpkg -l | grep helix and then purge out those programs, replacing them when you are up and running woody again. Good luck, Glen
grace6 broken??
Hi. I'm running Sarge and wanted to know if this problem is just on my computer, and if there are any suggestions to fixing this, or if I should file a bug report. The grace install works fine with Sarge, but I can't get the install of grace6 to work. If I start with xmgrace, or gracebat, I get: Broken or incomplete installation - read the FAQ! I followed suggestions in the FAQ about setting the GRACE_HOME environmentbut to no avail. I've tried downloading the deb and using dpkg instead of apt-getI get the same error at runtime. Also, the installed size of grace6 (3408 kb) is smaller than grace (4358 kb) which it replaces. Is it possible there grace6 has dependencies, or conflicts, which are not flagged in the install? pop3vscan iptables question
I'd like to use pop3vscan to run clamscan. I added the following iptables rule: # /sbin/iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i eth0 -p tcp --dport 110 -j REDIRECT --to-port 8110 I then went through the procedures in /etc/default/iptables so that the rule would remain after rebooting, but that doesn't seem to work. If I reboot, the rule isn't there when I try: #iptables -t nat -v -L If I do: # /etc/init.d/iptables restart It will load the rule with: "Loading iptables rulesel": load "active" ". A couple of possible issues: -I had compiled nat, iptables, and redirect support into the kernel, rather than as modules. -If I run #dpkg-reconfigure iptables I am not prompted for anything. -I had to create the directory /var/lib/iptables/ in order to save active and inactive. It has the same permissions as all of the other directories in /var/lib Any suggestions on how to get dpkg-reconfigure iptables to work (I suspect the problem is there) would be greatly appreciated. Re: mozilla>print freezes
I had the same problem on a home computerI did a couple of things at once, so I'm not sure which took care of it, so you might want to try one at a time. Sorry that I can't be more specific, this is probably overkill and someone can probably give you a more concise way of fixing things (I like cups, anyway) First, try moving ~/.mozilla/pluginreg.dat somewhere else like pluginreg.old and then restart mozilla. It will create a new file of that name, reverting to default values. That might be all you have to do. If that doesn't work, then do the following: I installed xprt-xprint.org I installed cups and gnome-cups-manager (There's a similar kde manager I think if you don't use gnomeor you can use the webmin print manager) I installed foomatic-filters (you'll have to see what foomatic is most appropriate for what you're using). You might have to reboot to get the print daemon working, if you've done a --purge on lprng or what ever other print program you had. Use the print manager to configure your printer(s). Hope it helps. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
grub-disk
I just installed the grub-disk package from Sarge. There is no man or info page for Sarge.grub-doc isn't all that straightforward. As was mentioned in a previously posted grub-disk wishlist in bugreports it would be good to have a straigtforward instruction of how to take the grub-0.93-i386-pc.iso.gz and make a boot floppy. Is the grub-0.93-i386-pc.ext2fs.gz the same thing to install on an ext2 floppy? Sorry for the newbiesque questionsjust seems like there should be a few lines in a readme file for this. Can someone let me know how to transfer the iso to the floppy? Thanks, Glen -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Debian on a Walmart Microtel???
Walmart Microtel PCs were recently touted as an alternative for Linux users, since you can now purchase them at a lower cost without the OS. My neighbor was asking about them and we checked the web page. I didn't recommend it, since there is not much info on the hardware. Nor can we seem to find any info on Linux hardware pages about these systems. So the question arises.are there any Debian users who have actually installed on a Microtel box?

Help!!!Can't get X running with Radeon7000pci or Voodoo3 2000 agp
I'm still trying to get X-Free86 running on a woody box with either a Voodoo 2000 agp or a Radion7000pci. I am running Woody with XFree86-4. I've tried recompiling kernel 2.4.18 using make-kpkg and have versions without agp support, without agp or DRI support and with both installed or as modules. Currently they are installed as modules. I've tried downloading and installing new DRI modules from dri.sourceforge.net for the two. I've tried loading the libglide modules for the voodoo3 card. I've also tried the thing with Section "DRI" Mode 0666. Help! This is a work computer and I'm supposed to be getting some work done!. Anyway, the following are my XFree86.0.log and XF86Config files. Please, if anyone can just tell me how to get some kind of svga mode with either card I would be happy. (Also, no I do not have both cards installed at once). Unfortunately it didn't work. I've tried several combinations, as well as symlinks between the two, as well as to /etc/X11R6/lib/X11/XF86Config I have also tried XF86Config files generated from xf86cfg and xf86config. The first just give me a black screen and x crashes. The second allow me to see the gdm login panel, but when I try to login to gnome or kde just give me a large black square which is the mouse curser then crash back to the gdm menu (with the voodoo card). With the radeon card, I can't even get the gdm panel or use xf86cfg > > > I'm still trying to get X-Free86 running on a woody box with either a > > Voodoo 2000 agp or > > a Radion7000pci. SSH2 packet too long error
After upgrading my maching to woody (After many tips on x-config from other users--thanks) I decided to go from ssh to ssh2 protocol, since the mail server at work uses this. It works fine and I can connect to the server, use scp, etc. Now I want to use sshd2 to login to my machine remotely. I edited /etc/inetd.conf to include ssh stream tcp nowait root/usr/sbin/sshd sshd -i I also edited hosts.allow to include: sshd: ALL : allow sshdfwd-X11 : ALL : allow sshd1 : ALL : allow sshd2 : ALL : allow So now the sshd2 port starts up when I reboot. And I can login using a public key I generated remotely and copied over(I also edited the authorization and identification files appropriately on both ends). It accepts the passphrase just fine, but then I get the following error: warning: Authentication failed. debug: client_disconnect: Protocol error: packet too long: -1364331183. debug: Ssh2/ssh2.c:76: locally_generated = TRUE warning: Disconnected; protocol error (Protocol error: packet too long: -1364331183.). debug: uninitializing event loop I've looked around, one suggestion is to configure ssh2 without tcp-wrappers (--with-libwrap=no). I have libwrap-0 installed as well, if that matters. The ssh.com FAQ suggests changing the encryption to Blowfish, but the ssh-keygen2 I have doesn't support this. Is the debian woody ssh2 configured with or without libwrap? Should there be another ssh2-nolibwrap distribution, or is there another way to work around this. Also, I've tried connecting without the inetd.conf line (I get an error that there is no TCP/IP connection). I also tried changing the line from sshd to sshd2, but the problem is the same. I had ssh on woody here before without a problem. Any hints??? Thanks, Glen -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
SSH probs solved (was: SSH2 packet error..)
Thanks for the tips, Colin. I reinstalled open-ssh.I was wondering why the SSH2 bug reports were so old. My main motivation for installing SSH2 was that I log into a mail server at work that uses the commercial SSH2 version. Anyway, after messing around with ssh-keygen in openssh on my client machine, I was able to generate a dsa public key that works with when uploaded to a server with the commercial SSH2. If this sounds like something others can use, I can always put together a mini-howto somewhere. -Glen -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Re: SSH probs solved (was: SSH2 packet error..)
I first created the key pair using #ssh-keygen -t dsa, (Note, unless you leave the name of the keys id_dsa, you'll have to use -i to identify the keyname with ssh when you connect) Then I converted to a SSH2 key with # ssh-keygen -x |my_dsa.pub I copied my_dsa.pub to the host computer in my ~/.ssh2/ directory. Then I used vim on the host computer to add to a file ~/.ssh2/authorization Key my_dsa.pub Then the next time I logged in, the dsa key worked! -Glen -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Oops, the line should have been: # ssh-keygen -x > my_dsa.pub -glen --- Begin Message --- I first created the key pair using #ssh-keygen -t dsa, (Note, unless you leave the name of the keys id_dsa, you'll have to use -i to identify the keyname with ssh when you connect) Then I converted to a SSH2 key with # ssh-keygen -x |my_dsa.pub I copied my_dsa.pub to the host computer in my ~/.ssh2/ directory. Woody install on old PC
I salvaged an old PC166 (48 Mb ram, 6 Gb hd) from the trash bin, and plan to use it as a server in a home network. I started the install with an unofficial woody disk. Several anticipated issues with old BIOS (in this case 1994 AMI BIOS AP5C R1.4) are problems with large partitions, and the fact that cds are not bootable. I thought I could work around this by making rescue and root diskettes, booting, then installing off the cd (This wasn't ever a problem with another older machine that I have, and would get me far enough along to dial out with a modem). I have 2 problems: 1. When inserting the root diskette, the cd-rom is detected as hdc. I can't install from it, even if I use the 4 install floppies I still can't work with it. I've tried going to the shell and editing /etc/fstab to include the cdrom (after using the 4 boot floppies), and I still cannot mount it (The cd-rom ran fine before I formatted over Windows). I've also tried when with the rescue doing "linux cdrom=/dev/hdc" but it still does not mount the cdrom. Any hints? The install floppies work fine to a point but then I need to insert the driver files and I'm stuck. 2.I've tried partitioning hda (several partitions, with a 15 mb boot partition at the beginning, swap, and / as primaries, and /var /home and the others as separate logical partitions). I can't seem to install lilo to the 15 mb boot partition, even though it is at the beginning (hda1). I guess that one solution would be to install on one pc, then yank the hard drive and put it on the other. Linux is the only OS on this machine.
