Kernel-Recompile edba too big
Hi all, I just recompiled a 2.4.20 kernel to include the 2.7.0 i2c modules. It appeared to compile correctly. However, when I attempt to boot the kernel, I immediately receive the error message: "EDBA too big." A search of google doesn't turn up a lot of help. There is one reference to the image itself being too large. Not likely in this case as my initrd.img is only about 2.4 mb as compared to the stock 2.4.20-k7 initrd.img being about 3.0 mb. There is another reference to a "bug in lilo" that suggests getting the newest version of lilo. I have the version now in sid. Any ideas of how to get around this? Thanks. bob -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

printer.c loading at different location than printer
hi all, i have a usb printer which is located at /dev/usb/lp0. dmesg reports the printer is at /dev/usblp0. obviously, it doesn't work this way. there is no /dev/usblp0 on my system. i haven't a clue how to either relocate the printer or to redirect the module loading. any help would be appreciated. the same happens with the default installation of the scanner. however, it can be easily changed in the sane config files. i have found no such way to do so with the printer. tia bob -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". It was fairly painless for me to install the new kernel using apt-get. Kernel Modules
Hi all, I've asked related questions in the past without success. So, I'll try one more time. I'm just looking for a pointer to the correct place to resolve the difficulty. I'm using the XFree86 experimental 4.2.1-0pre1v1 debs because my rage pro 128 is not supported by previous editions. DRI will not enable because it needs a newer version of the r128.o module than is in the kernel. The log says it needs version 2.2 or higher and 2.1.16 is in the kernel. I'm using kernel-image-2.4.19-k7. My questions: How are kernel modules numbered? Apparently they do not reflect the kernel-numbering system? Since I am using the latest stable kernel where do I go to find a newer kernel module? Is this even the right list to ask this question? If not, a pointer to the right list would be helpful. There was a previous version on unstable that caused the same behavior on my system that you describe. It was fixed rather quickly though, by a dpkg -P kdm followed by apt-get -t unstable install kdm. My experience is that the kde on unstable holds together lots better than what may be in woody as not all updated packages migrate at the same time, and that Ivan (the maintainer) keeps it totally compatible with woody. This box has kernel 2.4.17. The printer will use ipp to print to a netprinter on a different box. I'm sure I'm missing something simple, but have no clue. Any help? TIA Bob

Mouse
I have an interesting situation with the mouse on the little woman's box. I recently swapped her old two-button for a three-button Logitech mouse. The new mouse doesn't work on her box, but it does on mine. The relevant sections of the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file are identical. To avoid this, use [update-rc.d] program, meant for chang- ing init parameters in Sys-V init process. Read man for this. #update-rc.d -f xdm remove The things that are done by the script include removal of all system startup links for /etc/init.d/xdm ... i.e. /etc/rc0.d/K01xdm /etc/rc1.d/K01xdm /etc/rc2.d/S99xdm /etc/rc3.d/S99xdm /etc/rc4.d/S99xdm /etc/rc5.d/S99xdm /etc/rc6.d/K01xdm You will boot into tty mode therafter, and would have to use "startx" subsequently to get into "X". permissions for pon/poff
I just set up a new box for a friend, installed from 2.2r3 and upgraded to woody. He can dial out as root (a no-no) but not as a normal user, so it's apparently a permissions problem. I added the user to the dip and dialout groups with no change. Poking around, I notice that /usr/bin/pon and /usr/bin/poff are both owned by root and in the root group. Is this correct? I checked the bug listing for base/ppp but it's really no help. What should the group/owner and permissions for these scripts be? TIA bob

Real Player as Plug-in
surely, I'm missing something here. I've spent quite a bit of time over two days looking in the archives, but still haven't a clue. I've downloaded and installed the realplayer package, which apparently debianizes and then installs the rp8_linux20_libc6_i386_cs2_rpm file previously downloaded from real.com however, when i open the "about plugins" in netscape navigator, it shows the rpm extension as being the only ones associated with the plug in. i have added the following to the helper applications: description: real player MIMEType: audio/x-pn-realaudio-plugin Suffixes: ra,ram checked the box to make this default and checked the rpnp.so plug in. real audio works as a stand alone from my box, but not as a helper app. this is a woody box with kernel 2.2.19 installed. any ideas? tia bob

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Do you still have the 2.2.18pre21 kernel that shipped with potato? If so, either disable the framebuffer interface in xserver-xfree86 (dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86) or upgrade your kernel to one that supports framebuffering. MAC Address and Ethx
I had a phone call from my Cable ISP the other day, stating that I should reconfigure my computer or risk losing connectivity. The web site they pointed me to is a windows site, basic config stuff. Later phone call to tech service (level one and level two) confirms they are going to start checking the MAC addy of the modem as opposed to my previous @home username, etc. Level one actually told me that my choices are to either find a new ISP or use windows. Is there a way to pass the modem MAC address along to the network in the ifconfig? If so, how would I do that? TIA Bob

IIRC, CorelLinux doesn't ask for a password on install. Just leave the field blank. Log in first as root, then the Corel Control Center will ask for one. Bob On Sat, 19 May 2001, Karsten M. APIC error
I have a Giga-byte GA-7DPXW+ mobo with dual Athlon MP 2800+ cpus. The kernel is a custom 2.6.8, basically the stock k7-smp kernel with PCMCIA, ACPI, and OSS removed, compiled with gcc-3.3. Trying to clone a hard disk using dd, i get the following error repetitively: APIC error on CPU1: 00 (40) APIC error on CPU1: 40 (40) APIC error on CPU0: 00 (40) APIC error on CPU0: 40 (40) This continues with the 40 (40) until the process runs its course, or i kill the process totally. APIC error bits, listed in the kernel-source: /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/kernel/apic.c only go from 0 through 7. Poking around google, I have found numerous references, all the way back to the 2.2 series of kernels and none refer to error codes higher than 7. Can someone give me a clue as to how to decipher this? or point me towards a location where the question is more appropriate? This includes district judges (misdemeanors/ juveniles/ preliminary hearings) circuit judges (felonies), judges of the Court of Appeal and State Supreme Court. My memory of California is that the governor appoints all judges, who must then stand for non-partisan election in the next general election of the state. Bob
