Noisy computer
I have a HP Pavilion 250y that becomes very silent after a while with XP, but with sid it doesn't stop making noise. I think it is the fan. I was reading a thread at http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/archive/1/2003/08/1/78087 and they describe a very similar situation. Does anyone have the same problem? In the discussion above they mention veryfan, I couldn't find it in the packages. Does sid have any thing similar packaged? Any ideas? audigy ls sound in sid: solved
I finally got my audigy card working after a long battle. For references, the instructions given in the tutorial about installing alsa in debian in http://www.linuxorbit.com (tutorials section) and pointed at from debianplanet.org, didn't work, failed miserably. The instructions at http://www.sonic.net/~rknop/linux/debian_alsa.html didn't work for my card. The instructions in the sourceforge.net site didn't work. There is some emu10k1 site there, I couldn't find it now, sourceforge is down for maintenance. The instructions that worked were the ones provided in the alsa site: http://alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/doc-php/template.php?company=Creative+Labs&card=Soundblaster+Audigy+Digital+Entertainment&chip=Audigy&module=emu10k1 For those that may be in the same situation. Just have a basic one running, and then, if you feel lazy, once you have converted to sid, run tasksel. Another thing is that some times aptitude will show broken dependencies, go then with dselect, and with apt-get with all its different options. I have noticed that by cycling through them, you can fix most (if not all) the dependenciy problems. Good luck. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? screwed custom kernel image, recovering getting bad
Reposting this message. It seems that it dissapeared. I have the following sid screwed system: / in hdb1 /home in hdb2 swap in hdb3 grub floppy is used to boot. Everything was running great until I made yet another custom kernel image. There is a problem with the scsi that throws the kernel into panic. make menuconfig related info: The only change that I made was to eliminate scsi support for harddrive (which I don't know how it got added in the first place), left the one for CD (change with respect to previous kernel image) . I also made some changes, additions and deletions in the usb modules, because I was getting a lot of unresolved usb mess ( i have 6 usb ports and 2 firewire ports), which I had to solve. Previous kernel image was 2.4.21, same as this new image. booting: Now the booting seems to run much more smoothly, until it gets stucked at the scsi loading step, with inmediate panic. At this point, I can boot using 1. (grub floppy + loading old image 2.4.18) leaves me without a bunch of commands, for example, says that dpkg is not known, etc. 2. knoppix from sept 24 (great by the way). The problem is: I don't know what exactly I should do to get back to the previous image booting sequence. I had done mv /lib/modules/2.4.21 as usual. I have changed the names of the directories sevral times, but I still can tell which is which: The old one has some alsa directory inside. It seems to me that the best option would be to get back to that booting kind, and play more with the kernel images building, until the problem is resolved. The system was too well tuned to redo it (audigy and radeon 9800 running good!), etc. Any ideas are welcome. Moving some parts of FS to unpopuplated partitions, mounting during booting, swap...
I have some unpopulated partitions. The system originally was woody, using a mixture of testing installer and woody CDs. Since then I moved my system to sid. Due to restrictions in the woody installer, not all 160 gb were recognized. I want to fix this, cfdisk and relatives from sid have no problems seeing the whole disk. So, at this point, all is in /dev/hdb1. What is the best way to move /home; /usr; to some of these partitions, and have then recognized at booting time? I want to create a swap partition, because I didn't create one, due to the fact that I was playing with the netinstaller for testing before using the woody installer, and it seems to me now that it didn't ask me then if I wanted one. And having 512 mb of RAM didn't make me too worried about it. However, the time has come for one. What is the best procedure to get it going? I know (??) that I have to make changes in /etc/fstab, some cp, etc, but would prefer to hear some opinions before going ahead, would not want to mess up a new machine. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". My email is rejected by some sites
I have exim set in my sid machine, with mutt as MUA. Some isps are rejecting my emails. I have looked at the reason provided, it seems that some have blocked the ips in my block, or that they are blocking all dinamic ips. Some isps are accepting my emails without problems. At some point I thought it might be due to having somewhere in the email the text: "Sender: [EMAIL PROTECTED]". I have tried to tweak muttrc in all possible ways known to me, but it keeps appearing. In the headers all is ok, though. So probably the phrase is inserted by exim.4 (a sid machine). So, if it is the case, how do I change the settings to reflect the change? The hostname is properly configured, that is, is hpd.top-domain-name.org I would like to be able to send emails directly from my machine, w/o having to use the account provided by my isp, or the hosting company that hosts my top-domain-name. I am running exim4, and it even didn't occur to me that there could be a directory /etc/exim4 overriding the older one. Any way, the setting's changes seem to be needed in /etc/exim4/conf.d/(routers, main?, etc?) According to the documentation, or what I understood from it, this must be done in the following sequence: 1. Change settings in the proper file in the proper directory as written above. 2. Run "update-exim4.conf" 3. Run "invoke-rc.d exim reload" There are some problems with this: In /etc/exim4/conf.d/routers alone there are several files, which exactly isn't very clear to me must be edited. Defining a group of addresses, sending mail to all , mutt
I want to define a group of addresses as a set to which I can refer with a single name call, to send mail to. What's the best way to do it? The size of the font changes the size of the terminal. Let me add another element to this topic: In the English language, at least in its American version, the simple division operation 6/2 = 3 in its long form is written 3 | 6 2 | ___ | which corresponds to 6 divided by 2 is 3, but is not exactly co-sequential with its written form. Hence the common confusion among the not so educated as to the written notation. I find the notation used in (the rest of the planet ?) other parts more corresponding to the human language: | 6 | 2 |_ 3 By the way, did anybody read about the varying frecuency of dislexia, according to the spoken language?
