Packages for Debian 3.0 (Alpha 16)
I have prepared some packages that update some packages that are not or only in an older version in Debian 3.0r1. Please read [1] for more information (and read the FAQ before sending mails to me). I try my best to avoid problems with both installing these packages on Debian 3.0 and upgrading with these packages installed to Debian 3.1. Since the libvorbis packages caused problems for people using unofficial backports of KDE 3.1 I've removed them from my packages. The following command will downgrade all removed packages to the woody ones (if one or more of these packages aren't installed on your system you can skip the packages not present): apt-get --purge install vorbis-tools=1.0rc3-1 \ libvorbis0=1.0rc3-1 libvorbis-dev=1.0rc3-1 It is expected that this command will remove the following packages if they were installed on your system: - libvorbis-compat - libvorbisenc2 - libvorbisfile3 Highlights * gcc 3.2.2 * GNU Ghostscript 7.05 * Kernel 2.4.20 * Lyx 1.2.3 * Mozilla 1.2.1 * OpenOffice.org 1.0.2 * SANE 1.0.11 * Webmin 1.060 * Wine 20030115 * XFree86 4.2.1 Changelog + added: fvwm + added: libnet-google-perl + added: webmin-shorewall + added: xchat Binary packages: o xchat o xchat-common o xchat-gnome o xchat-text + updated: debconf (1.2.23 -> 1.2.27) + updated: doc-linux (2003.01-1 -> 2003.02-1) + updated: mozilla-locale-de-at (1.2.1 -> 1.2.1-1) + updated: openoffice.org-debian-files (1.0.2-1+2 -> 1.0.2-2+1) [contrib] + updated: sane-backends (1.0.11-1 -> 1.0.11-2) + updated: sane-backends-extras (1.0.10.1 -> 1.0.10.2) + updated: strace (4.4.93-1 -> 4.4.94-1) + updated: texmacs (1.0.1-1 -> 1.0.1.4-2) + updated: webmin (1.050-4 -> 1.060-2) + updated: webmin-apache (1.050-1 -> 1.060-1) + updated: webmin-bind (1.050-1 -> 1.060-1) + updated: webmin-burner (1.050-1 -> 1.060-1) + updated: webmin-cfengine (1.050-1 -> 1.060-1) + updated: webmin-cluster-servers (1.050-1 -> 1.060-1) + updated: webmin-cluster-software (1.050-1 -> 1.060-1) + updated: webmin-cluster-useradmin (1.050-1 -> 1.060-1) + updated: webmin-core (1.050-2 -> 1.060-1) + updated: webmin-cpan (1.050-1 -> 1.060-1) + updated: webmin-dhcpd (1.050-2 -> 1.060-1) + updated: webmin-exports (1.050-1 -> 1.060-1) + updated: webmin-fetchmail (1.050-1 -> 1.060-1) + updated: webmin-firewall (1.050-1 -> 1.060-1) + updated: webmin-fsdump (1.050-1 -> 1.060-1) + updated: webmin-grub (1.050-1 -> 1.060-1) + updated: webmin-heartbeat (1.050-1 -> 1.060-1) + updated: webmin-inetd (1.050-1 -> 1.060-1) + updated: webmin-jabber (1.050-1 -> 1.060-1) + updated: webmin-lilo (1.050-1 -> 1.060-1) + updated: webmin-lpadmin (1.050-1 -> 1.060-1) + updated: webmin-lvm (1.050-1 -> 1.060-1) + updated: webmin-mon (1.050-1 -> 1.060-1) + updated: webmin-mysql (1.050-1 -> 1.060-1) + updated: webmin-nis (1.050-1 -> 1.060-1) + updated: webmin-openslp (1.050-1 -> 1.060-1) + updated: webmin-postfix (1.050-1 -> 1.060-1) + updated: webmin-postgresql (1.050-1 -> 1.060-1) + updated: webmin-ppp (1.050-1 -> 1.060-1) + updated: webmin-procmail (1.050-1 -> 1.060-1) + updated: webmin-pserver (1.050-1 -> 1.060-1) + updated: webmin-quota (1.050-1 -> 1.060-1) + updated: webmin-raid (1.050-1 -> 1.060-1) + updated: webmin-samba (1.050-1 -> 1.060-1) + updated: webmin-sendmail (1.050-1 -> 1.060-1) + updated: webmin-sentry (1.050-1 -> 1.060-1) [contrib] + updated: webmin-software (1.050-1 -> 1.060-1) + updated: webmin-squid (1.050-1 -> 1.060-1) + updated: webmin-sshd (1.050-1 -> 1.060-1) + updated: webmin-status (1.050-1 -> 1.060-1) + updated: webmin-stunnel (1.050-1 -> 1.060-1) + updated: webmin-vgetty (1.050-1 -> 1.060-1) + updated: webmin-webalizer (1.050-1 -> 1.060-1) + updated: webmin-wuftpd (1.050-1 -> 1.060-1) + updated: webmin-xinetd (1.050-2 -> 1.060-1) + updated: xfsprogs (2.3.6-1 -> 2.3.11-1) + removed: libvorbis + removed: libvorbis-compat + removed: vorbis-tools cu Adrian [1] http://www.fs.tum.de/~bunk/packages/ BTW: I'm not subscribed to debian-user. -- "Is there not promise of rain?" Some myths regarding apt pinning
Since some people seem to thing apt pinning can solve all problems with outdated packages in stable I want to explain why this is wrong: apt pinning is good if you are running testing but need a package (e.g. a security update) from unstable. There are people that use apt pinning to install packages from unstable on a woody system. This is bad because nearly every installation of a package from unstable pulls a new libc6 and it's also possible that it pulls a new Perl and Python. Then some _very_ essential components of your system are upgraded to the potentially more buggy versions in unstable. >From a security point of view woody + libc6 from unstable is worse than any other possibility. Consider there's another security bug in libc6. The fixed version for stable has a lower version number than the version on your system and you won't get the update. This is worse than the situation when you are running one of stable/unstable/testing: stable: Stable users get security updates from security.debian.org. unstable: A fixed package for unstable is usually at about as fast as the fix for stable available. testing: Every user of testing knows that he must read debian-security-announce and if needed install fixes from unstable since it can take an arbitrary amount of time until security fixes from unstable enter testing (most likely none of fixes from the last 70 security advisories is in testing). cu Adrian BTW: Please Cc me on replies. -- "Is there not promise of rain?" I'm currently subscribed to the German Debian user list and it happens that people tell _novice users_ things like: Yes, Debian stable is horribly outdated, but with apt pinning you get the latest software. Been there, done that. It often works and it's a better alternative to pinning since it doesn't pull that many packages. But the older stable becomes more and more packages have build dependencies on things like perl (>= 5.8), python (>= 2.2), g++ (>= 3:3.2.1) or debhelper (>= 4.0.9). It's not impossible to work around these build dependencies to backport such a package to stable but far beyond the knowledge of the average user. >... > Good point. If someone else wants to run unstable because he says he learns much about his system while trying to cope with the breakages he knows what he's doing, too. But it's really wrong if people tell novice users to use apt pinning to get more recent software. cu Adrian -- "Is there not promise of rain?" Ling Tan asked suddenly out of the darkness. My plan with the whole collection of my backport packages [1] is to get them into a bugfix-only state in the near future. It's possible (depending on the estimated release date of Debian 3.1) that I'll start another set of packages but the bunk-1 packages will then stay in a bugfix-only state (e.g. they will never include OpenOffice.org 1.1). > Please CC debian-user so this can be in the archive. > > Thanks, > > Jamie Strandboge cu Adrian [1] http://www.fs.tum.de/~bunk/packages/ -- "Is there not promise of rain?" Packages to run kernel 2.4.x on potato (version 1)
[please excuse that my English isn't perfect - I'm not a native speaker] I have prepared the packages needed to run kernels up to 2.4.1 on a potato system. Please read the whole mail before you install these packages. Warnings Please consider the following before you install these packages: - These are packages taken from unstable recompiled on potato. You can't expect that they are as stable as the packages in potato and although I'll try my best I can't garuantee anything. - When you upgrade modutils you can no longer run a modular 2.0.x kernel. - Some packages you'll perhaps need aren't yet included because some bugs need to be fixed before I'll include them: * devfsd * isdnutils Installation If you still want to install these package you can do so by adding deb http://people.debian.org/~bunk/debian potato main deb-src http://people.debian.org/~bunk/debian potato main to your /etc/apt/sources.list or you can download them directly from http://people.debian.org/~bunk/debian/dists/potato/main/binary-i386/ Bug reports --- Please tell me when you find a problem with these packages or if other packages are needed. Don't report bugs in these packages to the Debian bug tracking system! Versioning of these packages When I had to recompile a packageI have decreased the last digit of the package version by one and added a ".bunk", e.g. 3.x.0a-2 -> 3.x.0a-1.bunk to mark that these packages aren't the official ones but packages I've recompiled. When you'll some time upgrade your distribution to woody you'll get the official package installed instead. The exception from this rule is ipmasq where I didn't decrease the last digit before adding the ".bunk" because this is the official package plus an important patch. Architectures - Currently, only i386 is supported. I had one request for powerpc packages and I'm willing to add this and other architectures. But higher priority items are for me: - Fixing problems that occur. - Add the packages I mentioned in "Warnings" as still missing. - Some other both Debian (my packages, sponsoring people, QA) and non-Debian (studies, finding a new job,...) items. Upgraded packages - Version e2fsprogs 1.19-3 Binary packages: - comerr-dev - e2fslibs-dev - e2fsprogs - ss-dev - uuid-dev ipmasq 3.5.5 (+ patch from #85781) ksymoops2.4.0-1 modutils2.4.1-2 pcmcia-cs 3.1.24-2 (without pcmcia-modules) Binary packages: - pcmcia-cs - pcmcia-source ppp 2.4.0f-1 util-linux 2.10q-1 Binary packages: - bsdutils - mount - util-linux New packages Version iptables1.2-6 kernel-source-2.4.1 2.4.1-3 reiserfsprogs 3.x.0a-2 Changelog - Version 1: * Initial release.

This way, you can make the Debian package management system believe that equivalents to packages on which other packages do depend on are actually installed. . Another possibility is creation of a meta package. When this package contains a dependency as "Depends: a, b, c", then installing this package will also select packages a, b and c. Instead of "Depends", you can also use "Recommends:" or "Suggests:" for less demanding dependency. . Please note that this is a crude hack and if thoughtlessly used might possibly do damage to your packaging system. And please note as well that using it is not the recommended way of dealing with broken dependencies. Kernel 2.6 packages for Debian 3.0 Alpha 1
Sorry for the cross-post. This is the only mail advertising these packages I'll send to these lists. There's a low traffic (approx. 1 Mail/week) announcement mailing list that informs you about new releases of these packages (including security fixes in the packages). To subscribe send a mail with "subscribe debian-packages" in the body to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . I've prepared some packages for people who want to run kernel 2.6 on Debian 3.0. After the Alpha and Beta stages these packages will come into a stable stage with only fixes for grave problems and security issues applied. As known from my other potato and woody packages, I'll support these packages as long as Debian supports Debian 3.0. Please report any problems with these packages installed and running kernel 2.6. Introduction I have prepared some packages that help to use kernel 2.6 in Debian 3.0r2. Please read the FAQ before sending any questions or comments to me. I try my best to avoid problems with both installing these packages on Debian 3.0r2 and upgrading with these packages installed to Debian 3.1. Warnings * These are packages taken from unstable recompiled on woody. You can't expect that they are as stable as the packages in woody and although I try to provide high quality packages there's absolutely no warranty. * Although these packages should help to use kernel 2.6 on Debian 3.0, complete support for all kernel 2.6 features is not possible. * Kernel 2.2 is no longer supported with these packages. * This package collection is currently in Alpha stage. There might be many bugs in the packages and there might be significant changes until the first release. Note * These packages are a subset of the bunk-2 packages. FAQ What are Alpha/Beta/Release? * During the Alpha phase many changes are possible. * After Beta 1 only smaller changes happen. * After Release 1 only security fixes and fixes for selected grave bugs will occur. My system is a woody with your backports plus the X, Y and Z backports. This causes the following problem. I don't support combinations with any other sources of backported packages. There are hundreds of sources for backported packages of various quality and it would be impossible to get all combinations working. Is mixing these pacakges with the bunk-1 packages supported? Yes. Which architectures are supported? Only i386 is supported. How can I contact you? * For bugs in the packages send a mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] * For suggestions (e.g. new packages) send a mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Note that I'll check this address only when looking for suggestions for new packages and that I do not always answer to mails sent to this address. * For other mails regarding these packages send a mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Could you add xyz to these packages? Send a mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] (read the commont in the answer to the question above). Changelog + Initial release. Since you are not in a hurry, the safest option would be to follow buster until it becomes stable in mid-2019. A faster option would be to switch to stretch (which will become stable in a few days) right now, and then search and downgrade the few packages where unstable currently contains a more recent version than stretch. No longer following upstream would be urgent in this case, since unstable is expected to get huge changes starting next week. > Pétùr cu Adrian -- "Is there not promise of rain?" Anyone using stretch/buster/sid on ARMv4t ?
Hi, for the armel port in buster the question of raising the baseline came up. 20 years ago you could go into a shop and buy a mobile phone with a CPU supported by the armel port in stretch. Roger Shimizu is doing a great job on ARMv5 hardware and I've seen bug reports from users on ARMv5 hardware in stretch, so it is clear that ARMv5 should stay supported (and of course also ARMv6 and ARMv7). But while it was mentioned that there exists ARMv4t hardware that works with current mainline kernels [1], it is not clear whether there are any actual users left - and without users we might not even notice if the port is broken on the baseline. If anyone is running stretch, buster or sid on ARMv4t hardware, then please let us know what device and kernel you are using and whether you intend to use buster. cu Adrian [1] https://lists.debian.org/debian-arm/2017/08/msg00046.html -- "Is there not promise of rain?" But is anyone still using Debian on OMAP15xx? Looking at the amount of RAM in the Amstrad Delta, I'd be surprised if anyone is actually using Debian on that hardware. > A. cu Adrian -- "Is there not promise of rain?" AFAIK 32MB (but I could be wrong on that). > How unrealistic is that these days? The stretch installation manual says at least 31MB RAM [1], but since it says the same for jessie says the same it is possible that noone ever tried stretch with that few RAM. > All the ARMv4T chips I checked (at91rm9200, imx1, ep73xx, ep93xx, > ks8695, omap1510 and s3c24xx) with the exception of the s3c2443 > (which we barely support) only support SDRAM, not DDR, so they > are already limited to 64MB (512Mbit) per memory chip, and typically > 256MB as the absolute maximum on a 32-bit interface with four x8 > chips. Neo FreeRunner with 128MB RAM would still be fine if there would be a working recent kernel and people actually running current Debian on it. So far I haven't heard from a single person running stretch/buster/sid on ARMv4t, and I'm becoming confident that there are no users left.[2] >Arnd cu Adrian [1] https://www.debian.org/releases/stable/armel/ch02s05.html.en [2] there might still be people running Linux on such hardware and it might be possible to get Debian running if someone wants to, but actual users who would also report breakages seem gone -- "Is there not promise of rain?" It's ARMv4 without Thumb. Non-Thumb ARMv4 was never supported by the armel port, it used to be supported by the arm port. The last Debian release with the arm port was lenny in 2009. cu Adrian -- "Is there not promise of rain?" Ling Tan asked suddenly out of the darkness. There had been need of rain for many days. Packages to run kernel 2.4.x on potato (release 26)
I have prepared the packages needed to run kernels up to 2.4.18 on a Debian 2.2r6 (potato) system. Please read [1] for more information. My packages will be available and and I'll make changes to them if needed at least as long as Debian gives support (especially regarding security fixes) for potato (which will most likely be a few months after the release of Debian 3.0) but don't expect them to be available much longer.
