Sanyo CD drive prevents boot
I have here a Sanyo H94-A CD drive which I am havign trouble installing. If I turn on my computer with it plugged into the IDE bus, it won't boot (nothing on the screen, no boot noises). If I unplug it from the IDE bus but leave it connected to power, it insists it's busy 100% of the time and thus won't open. My inclination is that since the problem arises long before the OS comes into play, it is not a question of software at all. Maybe I just don't know how to wire it right. One other odd thing is that it has no master/slave switch; I have no idea if these could be connected. If anyone has any suggestions for me, I would appreciate them greatly. Thanks. alt-F7 reassignment
I see that in /etc/inittab I can set which ttys correspond to alt-fkeys; I would like to set all 12 of them to correspond to terminals. However, I see no reference in that file to the action associated with alt-F7, which brings up the x window interface. how can i set this action to another key (like alt-esc)? thank you. aaron brick. -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Re: alt-F7 reassignment
Thanks for your replies. How can I set the ttys corresponding to ralt-Fx? /etc/inittab says nothing about which alt key is in use. Also, will these key combos ever conflict with any program's builtin macros? Thanks again. Aaron Brick. -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . ttys accessible to root
what do i need to change to affect the settings of which ttys root is allowed to log in from? ie, right now he seems to be able to log in from ttys 1-8 and some ttyps but not elsewhere. thanks. aaron brick. -- aaron brick. booting from CD
I have the Cheap-Bytes Debian CDs here and I'm trying to start up with them and install Debian on this OS-less machine. However, when I try to boot with the binary disc, after getting the "LDLINUX.SYS" version info line, it stops doing anything and doesn't respond to any keystrokes. Can anyone tell me what I need to do here? Thanks a lot. Aaron Brick. -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . silly "gateway" networking
I'm trying to set up a Debian system here on my office network. However, I don't know exactly how to go about it, because the setup is not the straightforward one-IP-per-computer schema. There is one computer which has a dedicated dialup PPP connection, and runs a "gateway". Thus all the other machines' net requests go through that box - anyway, it's a super-cheap setup. My question is, how do I configure Debian (with the blue/grey curses configuration that you get on the rescue disk) on this kind of network? What, for example, do I put in for the domain name? The PPP connection does have a static IP, so maybe that's a little helpful. Thanks, you guys have been real helpful! broken pipe using dselect with CD
When I try to get dselect to recognize the CD as a file source, I have to enterthe distribution top level. Whatever reasonable response I give, it breaks: /usr/lib/dpkg/methods/disk/setup: line 8: 343 Broken pipe [...] I don't know what adverse effect this is having (if any), but it's disturbing. misc X problems
I have just gotten the SVGA X server working on my machine, and I have a couple of problems with it. One is that the "desktop" is much bigger than the screen area, and the screen moves around when the mnouse approaches the edges. Does this have to do with switching around hte resolutions in the XF86Config file? The other is that the screen only draws every other column. Thus all the text in the terminal windows is pretty much illegible, plus no colors look good only being drawn halfway. This I have no idea about, but it seems like it could possibly be related to the above problem. Do any of you have ideas? Thanks. setting up debian on a gateway network
Hello all. I'm trying to get this Debian machine onto my office network. I can ping localhost but no-one else. The problem is b/c the network is a dumb gateway one, where one machine (not the Debian one) handles all the TCP/IP traffic for all the others via a single line to the net. Anyway, if any of you have ideas as to what I might do in this situation, please let me know. Following are the outputs of ifconfig and netstat, I thought they might help diagnose this. Thanks. more misc questions, esp. re: dselect.
a. dselect is messed up. it gives me conflict resolution screens with no packages to select and fails to install things. b. why can't i install staroffice? i get the error "staroffice3 depends on libc (>= 5.4.4-0)". i tried to get all the packages with "libc" in their name via dselect but since it's acting strangely i don't know if i have them or not. this may well be a problem based on problem a. c. i tried to install mlvwm, a window manager, but it gives me error messages about some .xpm files (i do have sxpm installed); does anyone else use mlvwm or know what i need? thanks. aaron brick. -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] .
