What’s the approved method for doing that now, since it’s not allowing

Fine. I don't know if there is a screw loose in your laptop, or
warewolves pissed on a USB plugs. Or all those swedish solar flares...

Perhaps you'd better ask a mechanic, a veterinary, and an astronomer for
help, instead of this mailinglist!

If that option works great then don't change that option.

Did you compress the attachments?

Strange indeed, maybe that was changed. But no longer allowing

Yes, this is what I wanted to say - you are right. You can create the
partition with fdisk or alike, but grub refuses to install if it is not
booted in UEFI

Again, this is not true. GRUB will install, but it will just not be able
to update EFI boot variables. Note that you do not need to update EFI
boot variables if you install GRUB in the removable media path
(--removable). At least with GRUB versions up to Stretch which relied on
efibootmgr to update EFI boot variables. Maybe this has changed with
Buster's GRUB version which does not rely on efibootmgr any more. Not
tested yet.

Highly unlikely. KDE rudely mixes most of its settings with other apps in
~/.config/. I don't think ~/.kde/ is used at all any more. Better to create a
new
user for testing to see if the problem survives there. If the problem disappears
in the new user, then you can try eliminating identifiable KDE settings files
and
directories from ~/.config/.

Stops ppl sending unnecessary guff to the list (emojis, html,
anim-gifs...), not that that applies necessarily to your situation.

There are other places things can be put (own web site, pastebin, etc.)
with a pointer to it placed on the list, so those ppl that are able to
help can take a look.

When I tried that yesterday, it allowed extensions to be reinstalled
(yes, I was one of those who tried to fix this problem by uninstalling
and reinstalling my extensions), but not all plugins actually worked in
this state. Most notably, NoScript displayed no icon on the toolbar
(just a blank space with a tooltip) and did not appear to actually do
anything. Its settings were also inaccessible, both through the
(missing) popup menu and via the list of installed add-ons (in which
case I got a blank grey page with an endless "loading" spinner
animation).

Based on this, it appears that xpinstall.signatures.required may be no
more than a partial solution. (Although it's also possible that
something may have been broken in the uninstall/reinstall process.)

I also set "Menu" (which is the key between right Alt and right Ctrl) as

So if you were to make a Danish Teres laptop, you'd make the following
choices in dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration?

Keyboard model:  Generic 102-key PC (intl.)
Keyboard layout: Danish - (Win keys)
Key to function as AltGr:    The default for the keyboard layout
Compose key: Menu key
Use Control+Alt+Backspace to

Those won't work for me, but there are a couple of Finnish options I
will try.

Found that keyboard model "Generic 102-key PC (intl.)" and keyboard
layout "Finnish - Finnish (Winkeys)" works for me (the rest as above).

At last! :-)

With some stickers to put onto the printed keys I'll be fine. Grateful

Configuring keyboard-configuration

Please select the model of the keyboard of this machine.
-Keyboard model: Generic 102-key PC (intl.)
Please select the layout matching the keyboard for this machine.
-Keyboard layout: Danish - Danish (Win keys) [and below "Finnish -
Finnish (Winkeys)"]
With some keyboard layouts, AltGr is a modifier key used to input some
characters, primarily ones that are unusual for the language of the
keyboard layout, such as foreign currency symbols and accented letters.
These are often printed as an extra symbol on keys.

-Key to function as AltGr:  The default for the keyboard layout
The Compose key (known also as Multi_key) causes the computer to
interpret the next few keystrokes as a combination in order to produce a
character not found on the keyboard. On the text console the Compose key
does not work in Unicode mode. If not in Unicode mode, regardless of
what you choose here, you can always also use the Control+period
combination as a Compose key.

-Compose key:  Menu key
By default the combination Control+Alt+Backspace does nothing. If you
want it can be used to terminate the X server.

-Use Control+Alt+Backspace to terminate the X server?

It's a style of website that allows you to paste text and others to read
it. For example, http://termbin.com or http://paste.debian.net, etc.

A place to share (predominantly) code snippets and the like for the
purposes of critique or garnering advice about ways to improve said code.

Yes, it's available to all. pastebin.com

Pastebin has the advantage that whatever you upload gets line numbers
attached to the display not the code itself), so people can point you to
exactly the right place. There are various restrictions based on type of
account you have (unregistered, free, and so on). But aren't there

I did! And "swerty" came up!

I guess this means I could file a whishlist bug for both "TERES-I

Places you can put stuff for others to see, besides Pastebin:

1)Many ISP accounts give some free web space, e.g. Panix

2)A free Google account allows document sharing. So does a free Microsoft
account. Like them or hate them, most of us have one for convenience's sake.

3)You can create a free WordPress account easily. Even if you only blog
every decade or two, you get the ability to upload files and give them URLs.

4)Plenty of others

That's interesting, but (off the point of this email exchange), it puzzles me
-- many corporations headed by non-lawyers have lawyers on staff, so I'm
guessing that the statement you made applies only to organizations like law
firms, or, the lawyers on the staff of a non-law corporation are in something

(PS: I stand corrected on Kuhn being a lawyer -- thanks for the correction.)

Now I have to debate (with myself) whether to prune the cc list -- I forget

Thanks. I have a hint : reducing refresh rate to 50Hz instead of
"automatic" seems to give a more stable graphical session.

I also had the following message on the text console after my graphical
screen got messed :

[ 7009.004936] nouveau :01:00.0: disp: outp 04:0006:0344: link rate
unsupported by sink
[ 7009.005030] nouveau :01:00.0: disp: outp 04:0006:0344: training

Which makes me think that a setting (of plasma) working with the nvidia
driver does not work (at least with the modesetting DDX).

Hi John,

probably booting issue is somewhere else, not in GDM.

I'm not sure which package has given these error messages but if it was
GRUB, just try to reinstall it. Even you can try to install EFI version
of GRUB.

By the way it seems that GDM has a bug in Buster so if you are a GNOME
user then you can consider to use LightDM

that indicate you dont have grub proper installed, did you remove or change
harddisk?

kernel arch is amd64 but grub i386-pc,and from the error it's a efi
installation

are you trying to boot from legacy while installation is under EFI

btw,how did you get dmesg ,while the boot stop at grub

i think a reinstallation of grub would fix this

The Debian mailing lists I deal with most (including -user) all accept
attachments, compressed and uncompressed. However, there will be a size
limit. The limit varies from list to list; perhaps it is 0 for -powerpc.
I would mail listmaster@l.d.o and enquire.

Incidentally, using outside agencies to host files like yours is not a
good idea and is not suitable for longterm storage. In the case of a
bug report, the extra step involved in accessing the information might
have a deterrent effect on readers.

Er. Americans still have cents (¢).

The ECU (₠) was never a real currency anyway. I never saw its symbol
being used in the wild. Its position is way down the Unicode table,
in the company of ₡ ₢ ₣ ₤ ₥ ₦ ₧ ₨ ₩ ₪ ₫ € ₭ ₮ ₯ ₰ ₱, currency signs
that I would have difficulty naming from their symbols, apart from—

Is this some sort of ticking off for wondering why the OP is *so*
keen to be able to type ¦ directly on the keyboard that they are
almost willing to use a USB keyboard with a laptop to get it?
Particularly as the wiki page referred to above has a reference to
http://jkorpela.fi/latin1/3.html#A6
which states "It is advisable to avoid using this character, since its
code position is occupied by another character in ISO Latin 9 (alias
ISO 8859-15), which will probably widely replace ISO Latin 1 at least
in European usage."

Now, using Unicode might avoid this danger, but it's still odd to
want this character so much when it appears to be as much of a relic
as the aforementioned ECU is. And, after all, the answer is that
they didn't.

Cheers,
David.

The dude must be leery after calculating the cost-benefit ratio of

Of course, anyone who quits *and* gives up simultaneously is trying to

Re: Is Debian 9 supposed to work on a Geode?

2019-05-05 Thread Björn Persson
I've been trying various kernel command line parameters that have been
suggested in this thread. None of these made any noticeable difference:

· acpi=off
· systemd.restore_state=0
· init=/lib/sysvinit/init
· init=/bin/sh

I also found a parameter called initcall_debug that seemed like it
might provide more data, but that didn't lead anywhere either.

Even with init=/bin/sh I still see the string "starting version 232" –
which is the version number of SystemD – and "uninitialized urandom
read" messages that mention systemd-udevd and udevadm. Fortunately the
presence or absence of "quiet" has an obvious effect. Otherwise I would
have started to think that Grub ignored my changes to the command line.

Unpacking and examining initrd.img-4.9.0-9-686 I find that /sbin/init
is actually Busybox. So is /bin/sh, so that might explain why they both
do the same thing. /lib/sysvinit/init doesn't exist in the initrd, but
apparently Busybox gets started anyway. (Perhaps Linux falls back on
the default if the requested init program doesn't exist?) It seems that
I'll have to hack the initrd somehow if I am to get at a shell and poke
around in the initrd environment.

Booting from USB has been suggested several times. I'll do that if
someone can tell me the magic incantation that makes Combios boot a USB
device. I doubt it's possible. PXE booting is supposed to work. Maybe
some day in a few weeks or months I'll find the time to set up a boot
server.

Yes, some kind of disk access problem seems likely, seeing that the
disk activity light gets stuck on. This SATA SSD is the one and only
storage device in the box, and the bios and Grub read it just fine, but
maybe Linux somehow can't.

Hmm, I have trouble relating to that. I can imagine saying that I "quit and

something else entirely to accomplish my goal (stick with Windows, buy a new

Maybe it's only because I'm not familiar with the ARM world. I think of
memory cards as a removable medium that's used for copying files between
devices – especially from a camera to a computer. I tend to assume that
permanently mounted storage devices use SATA (unless requirements are
so high that NVME or SAS is used). If there are quality microSD cards
nowadays that are performant and reliable enough to replace a disk or
SSD, then I suppose I could use that.

When I see "uSD slot, easy accessible" in a bulleted list of what looks
like requirements, then I get the impression that any device that lacks
a microSD slot, or where it's not easy to access, would be excluded. I
wouldn't reject an otherwise promising computer just because it has a
SATA disk instead of a microSD card, and I don't mind using a
screwdriver if I need to replace a hard disk. That's all I meant.

Most of those ARM SBCs come with a µSD slot plus other things.
Even if you connect a SATA disk, you'll often need a µSD because some
of those SBCs don't have any on-board flash memory, so you need the µSD
to hold the U-Boot (which plays the role of the BIOS) without which the
board doesn't even know how to read from the SATA disk.

IOW it's not "SATA or µSD?" but rather "does it support SATA
(additionally to µSD)?"

Files sidebar Folder shorcuts, namely 'Documents'

2019-05-05 Thread Esteban L
Hello,

I think this is a baby question, but thought I would throw you all a
bone :-)

I want to setup a shortcut that basically uses my cloud's "Documents"
folder, instead of the Debian /home/user version.

I can use the ln command, and make a symbolic link as simple as:

ln --symbolic /home/user/Documents /home/user/cloud/Documents

The ramifications of that? I don't know.

I tried to search around, but as an be imagined, "Files" doesn't help
much.

I mostly just want to sidebar "Documents" to be my cloud's Documents. I
can just drag it to the sidebar (it will be near the bottom), but my
home/user/Documents remains. I cannot delete it or change it (I am sure
there is a way, I just don't know).

I would like to remove, or alter the above "Documents" if there is a
simple way--which I assume there is.

Anyone have an familiarity with this? Thanks

Makes good sense. Thanks for elaborating.

The referenced wiki page targets devices usable for non-technical users
- it was established for the FreedomBox project at first, but have seen
more broad use since then.

That item about easy accessible MicroSD card specifically is because a)
cheap ARM SBCs (single board computers) typically require MicroSD for
_booting_ even when equipped with SATA and USB port (for comparison with
IBM-compatible computers think "which device can BIOS be loaded from"),
and b) an early reference device for the FreedomBox project - GuruPlug -
had its MicroSD card behind a seal, so even if users are able to operate
a screwdriver if flashing went wrong then resetting involved "breaking
the seal".

Greetings all;

So web page in the sig is dark.

Stretch install, from a custom iso the LCNC folks are testing, but the

And indeed, there is no such module in that directory. Fix??

mod_authz_default.so has been removed in apache 2.4:

https://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.4/upgrading.html

I guess you are trying to run a 2.2 config with a 2.4 apache.

I suggested to try booting without systemd and if it does not work with
init=/bin/sh - then try find out what is missing. I recall problem with
udev not createing devices, but could be anything - the only way to find
out is to get into the boot/initrd shell.

It could be also you are missing drivers in the initrd - but therea re so
many possible reasons for failure, I would not speculate on them - just go
into the shell and try find out what is the issue.

Now I am certifiably upset, this web page needs printed. This is a new
install it took me 3 damned days just to get networking working as it
was stuck on ipv6 only, denying me net access to anything on the otgher
side of my router, and the nearest ipv6 support is a minimum of 100
miles away. So I am not in a good mood.

And the only printer it detected was the printer I wanted to use, but it
spit out about 50 pages of blank paper when I did. so I go back into
localhost:631 to printers/admin/brother HL-2140 and click on modify to
see if I can fix it, to be greeted by an advisory that sys I as first
user, has no permissions to do anything.

Now, since much of this is owned by root:root, and theres no provisions
to use sud, what do I do except chown the whole subdir to me:me, do what
I have to do, and change it all back, difficult remember since parts of
it are owned by root:Lp

So, and I fought with this problem in wheezy too but adding myself to
some selected entries in /etc/group half fixed it. Meaning whenever it
asked for a password, I changed the displayed username to me, and used
my passwd, which worked about 99% of the time.

But this is 2019, and now stretch, so what do I add, or edit into
to /etc/cupsd.conf, here

# Restrict access to the admin pages...

  Order allow,deny

To get me, the first user (#1000) not root, to do what I need to do to
fix this and add about 4 other profiles, 3 for a huge tabloid capable
brother and of course cups.pdf?

Thanks all.

When the 105 and 102 options then gave the same result, it got
completely lost.

And I'm still kind of lost since I don't really understand what a
"Keyboard model" is. So already at the first menu choice of
dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration I don't really know what I'm
doing there.

In the dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration menu there are [193
different keyboard models] to choose from.

But two of them are the same, at least from the point of view of a Teres
laptop.

How does that work?

This has nothing to do with the apache2 error you mentioned earlier.

To do printer administration using the web interface, add yourself to
the lpadmin group. When the web interface asks for credentials, put
your own username and password.

Happy that you find it useful! Took me some time to refine.

Yes, my intention with "quote" was indeed to encourage credit.

...but only encourage, deliberately not require: That'd be licensing
which I consider too heavy for my texts in general :-)

Remove the irrelevant parts. But 365 kB isn’t too much anyway.

What's the (exact) size limit then on the list(s)?

And I actually never had issues with gzip compressed text files.

@Rick:

The file was “.zip” compressed on a Mac — not “.gz’ on a Linux. Do you think
that makes a difference?

Maybe just give it a try and compress the text file with gzip instead.

In a roundabout way it does. I blame it on the extremely excessive
security paranoia that pervades the linux environment and gets worse by
the next release every time.

> To do printer administration using the web interface, add yourself to
> the lpadmin group. When the web interface asks for credentials, put

FYI I am a member of the lpadmin group. Whats next? reboot to make it
take effect? That involves restarting at least 20 other things this
machine does on a 24/7/365.25 basis. Not impossible but a bunch of
drugery nonetheless. IOW since I am "it" till I fail to answer roll
call, likely in the visible future since I'm already equipt with plastic
yeys and a pacemaker and am presently 84 yo, lets swat this once and for
all till then.

You have made it very clear not to assign a pw to root, do everything
with sudo. In which case lets make sudo work since its only used about
20% of the time now. From the cli TBE. But we've been configuring cups
from localhost:631 for well over 15 years now, no one wants to try and
remember all the arcane text phrases used with lpadmin to configure
anything as complex as even a 100 dollar brother b&w laser printer. I
have all the brother drivers here for both printers, the other is a
brother MFC-J6920DW, which is found 4 times by lpinfo -l -v. But it has
both a usb cable and a net cable at its own ip.

I have this page visible in FF right now, and its typical for linux docs,
it makes the assumption that everyone has what I assume is a group of
env vars so it doesn't waste a crossed t or a dot over a lowercase i to
explain just who or what @LOCAL or @ADMIN or @SYSTEM or @OWNER actually
is.

So lets define them so one can have an idea at least of who or what they
represent. Once they are properly defined, maybe I can put them to some
usefull purpose. At the end of the day, I want them to Just Work. So
lets start with the denial even though I am a member of the lpadmin
group.

Thank you.

(yes, I was one of those who tried to fix this problem by uninstalling

My prexisting NoScript installation works correctly after setting
xpinstall.signatures.required to false, including Add On preferences
page and toolbar icon. I did not uninstall/reinstall.

Hi.

No, please don't use pastebin.com

I won't read anything posted to that site, and I doubt that I'm
the only person here with this view.

People here care about software freedom. So please don't
recommend (here) non-free software providers with their stupid
logins, cookies, tracking, terms-of-service, javascript requirements
and who knows or cares what else when we have a free-software
service written by a Debian developer that does exactly what is
needed without attempting to monetise its users.

For pastebin purposes within Debian, please use: https://paste.debian.net/

This shouldn't be hard. It's an Intel PC with an EFI boot
system. Installing from a Debian netinstall CD

https://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/current/amd64/iso-cd/debian-9.9.0-amd64-netinst.iso

should work pretty well. Directions in general at

https://www.debian.org/releases/stable/amd64/

Feel free to ask more questions here, it's the right place.

No, Mozilla really screwed up. Every Firefox user has this
problem.

Try installing

And your problems should go away immediately. Upgrade your

Re: Installing Debian on iMac

2019-05-05 Thread Rick Thomas
Hi John, and welcome to the Debian community!

I assume you have a broadband Internet connection where you will be doing this
installation? If so:

You’ll want the Mac specific “netinst” installer image[1] that gets most of its
software packages from the Debian mirrors on the Web.
   [1] https://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/current/amd64/iso-cd/>

Take a look at this wiki page[2] for instructions on making a dual-boot
MacOS/Debian setup. The wiki page is aimed at the mac mini but it should
mostly carry over for your iMac. Also, you’ll want to read the wiki page[3]
for burning an installer CD under MacOS.
   [2] https://wiki.debian.org/MacMiniIntel
   [3] https://www.debian.org/CD/faq/#record-mac

And, of course, you’ll want to RTFM[4]
   [4] https://www.debian.org/doc/

If you’re not already signed up, you will want to join the debian-user mailing
list[5]. That’s where you’ll find lots of friendly, helpful and knowledgeable
folks.
   [5] https://lists.debian.org/debian-user/

Enjoy!

Thanks, Carl! The free WordPress account sounds very interesting. I’ll check

next amd64 stretch problem

2019-05-05 Thread Gene Heskett
Greetings all;

I have only one, very weak sound, from kmails new mail beep. Down about
20 db from what I'm used to hearing.

Everything else is muted. And I can't find the speaker-test utility in
the repo's to even begin to troubleshoot, so whats the next step?

Thanks all;

Cheers, Gene Heskett

Hi again John & welcome here

In addition, note that if your iMac supports booting off a USB drive, then
if you prefer to avoid using optical media you can copy the installation
"CD" image to a USB drive and boot from that, see here:
https://www.debian.org/releases/stable/amd64/ch04.html.en

The "netininst" images are small images that use a working internet
connection to download packages to install during the install process.
There are other larger images you can use if such a network connection
is not available at install time.

Being impatient and easily annoyed, I just installed Waterfox,
which works fine. Yes, I know about the theoretical security issues.

"missing pubkey" for buster-security

2019-05-05 Thread Harald Dunkel

Hi folks,

I am running a local mirror of the security.debian.org
repository for in-house use. It seems to be available for
Buster as well, except that there is an error message

ERROR: Condition '7638D0442B90D010' not fulfilled for
'/var/www/official/lists/buster-security_buster%2Fupdates_InRelease'.

Error: Not enough signatures found for remote repository buster-security

There have been errors!

These keys are unknown on keyserver as well:

# apt-key adv --keyserver keyring.debian.org --recv-keys 9D6D8F6BC857C906

I understand that Buster is not released yet, but wouldn't you
agree that it is unusual to sign InRelease without sharing the
public key?

Every helpful comment is highly appreciated

Humm, strange. It is installed, its in my $path and once found, works,
without the path in front of the invocation, albeit quietly despite all
the "knobs" being turned wide open. Ditto for FF, news stories now have
audio. Not loud enough for old ears, but there. When I get some of the
other stuff working again, I'll have to drag in my scope and see if its
good at the mobo jacks. Wally's choice of pc speakers is $20, or $250
for your tv, and the $20 ones need all the electrolytic's replaced about
annually. BTDT once since I couldn't buy a better set. These are about
due again I suppose.

Thank you, David.

These keys are already in the debian-archive-keyring package (in
testing/unstable):

+---
| $ gpg --no-default-keyring --keyring
/usr/share/keyrings/debian-archive-keyring.gpg --list-keys 7638D0442B90D010

Your condition requires the security archive to be signed with the
main archive key; that is wrong.

The 9/stretch keys are fairly new and were announced in [1].

keyring.d.o only has developer keys, not any of the other keys Debian
might be using. I recommend getting them either from the
debian-archive-keyring package or the locations referred to in the
announcement; they should also be available on other keyservers.

I would also recommend using the full fingerprint instead of shorter keyids.
