Last time I used 'btrfs balance', I had to run it with increasing (or
decreasing) values for the -fi argument (iirc), as the initial values freed up
just enough working space for the subsequent values to work within, and the
subsequent values would not work when I first tried them. If that makes sense.
I was left with a very sour taste in my mouth.

Nowadays I only use btrfs for a development space (as a docker storage backend)
and when it goes pear-shaped, I just blow it away and start again, there's
nothing stored there which can't be recreated.

Because:

1) some of the things on that list declare libjack-jackd2-0 as a
dependency (probably because they are libraries or programs which are
linked against the libraries contained in libjack-jackd2-0), so will be
removed due to having an unfulfilled dependency.

2) some of the things on that list declare things in (1) as
dependencies, so will be removed due to having unfulfilled dependencies.

3) some of the things on that list may be automatically-installed
prerequisites for things in (1) and (2) which no longer have any reason
to be installed if everything in (1) and (2) is being removed, so will
be removed due to being automatically-installed packages which no longer
have a reason to be installed.

As a general rule, removing packages whose name begins with 'lib' and
doesn't end in '-dev' or -doc' should be *expected* to produce this kind
of result.

Hi Rainer,

you can try to tweak the init script to see what is really happening,
for example by echoing more information or redirecting the command
outputs to a logfile.
Alternatively you can give hdparm link a higher Start number in
/etc/rc3.d/ to see if it helps.

Considering the state of documentation, esp man pages, why no SOD

In many areas, nerds are considered illiterate. I can see SOD

There is no obvious pay-off for Google - or anyone else with money. And it

Your answer highlights the problem, although it's not quite what you said:
the pay-off is, better docs! Which are very important. Perhaps not as much
as the programs themselves; the question is, how important? Unfortunately,
many people think nowhere near as important, hence nobody being prepared
to pay for it.

Assuming it's installed (good point, Lisi), I would try just running it
from a shell or Alt-F2. Once you get it running, as long as you have
your session set to remember what processes are running, it should start
when you log in again.

There are quite a few initiatives underway which are changing the
world -- too many to mention, from low to high.

In the realm of man pages, there's Michael Kerrisk [1], working
at it since time immemorial. In the realm of Linux kernel
documentation, there's a new initiative, led by Mauricio Carvalho
Chehab [2] and supported by LWN's inimitable Jonathan Corbet [3].
For those trying to climb the steep kernel ladder there's
kernelnewbies.com [4]. For a very broad brush on Linux user space
there's the excellent Arch wiki [5]. Debian itself has recognized
that there are more roles than "just" maintainer, so there's room
for documenters now. There's the venerable Linux Documentation
Project, from which a sizeable part of your /usr/share/doc derives
(on my box this is 2.3G of compressed stuff: just sayin'). I didn't
mention Debian's huge resources, since I assume most are well-known
here. There's Wikipedia, which in the technical realm is, overall,
pretty good.

And the other 53479 I didn't mention, because I don't even know
about most of them.

We're drowning in documentation. Even more: if we only kept the
10% "good" doc we'd be still drowning in it. Could it be better?
You bet! But the main problem is... books is not all.

Take Richard Feynman's "Lectures on Physics" or Knuth's "The
Art of Computer Programming". Reading the one won't make a
theoretical physicist of you (unless you're exceptional: yes,
such folks exist!), reading the other won't make you a computer
scientist. Books are one building block, there are others, as
mentoring and experience.

Same here: su's man page is imo excellent. It could be made
better (you're in a good position to make proposals, since
it seems that you just mounted an obstacle and might have a
fresh memory of how this obstacle felt to you). But sometimes
it just takes another person with a fresh perspective to
get the right nudge at the right time. Then, all of a sudden,
the darn thing becomes readable :)

(Note that I'm not arguing against the point you made above.
If we could attract more resources into making people better
documenters, I'm all for it -- it is at the heart of free
software after all).

It looks like mysql server is no longer installed:

My inclination would be to purge all the remaining mysql components (not
the workbench) and try reinstalling. They are different versions,
presumably as a result of the failed upgrade, and the older ones may be
broken in some way that prevented upgrade.

If the apt tools refuse to do the job, as they may since there has
already been a problem, escalate (carefully) to dpkg. I did once have a
problem that even dpkg wouldn't touch and had to resort to manual file
deletion, but that will result in an inconsistent package database, and
should be avoided if at all possible.

Thanks Joe, you fill me with confidence :(

I purged the lot using apt, and the client packages disappeared. Sadly,
the error persisted. Being of a somewhat cowardly nature, and having
never used dpkg for this sort of thing, I abandoned that tack.

Instead, I successfully installed MariaDB from the repository, which was
my long-term plan in any case, and now have a working database.

Thanks again for your suggestions.

It is installed and I've tried running it from a shell. The man page
says it should be started without arguments, but when I do that it
says "Failed to parse arguments: Cannot open display:" so I guess it's
trying to find some arguments in some config file. I've looked for
where it might be looking for them and why it can't parse them but
there seem to be quite a few config xml files and I haven't yet
figured out which one or ones it is attempting to parse and why it
can't parse them.

I was hoping it might have an option to run verbosely so I could see
where it is failing but no such luck. I may have to download the
source and read it to find out where those error messages are
pointing to. If someone can suggest an easier way, I'm all ears.

Thanks for letting me know that once I get it to start xfce should
keep track of that and restart it the next time, I didn't know that.

The following is the output of sensors with kernel 4.8.0-1-amd64:

As can be seen, data is the same but the order is different. It appears
that the output of nouveau-pci-0400 is used, while that of
atk0110-acpi-0 should be.

Can anyone shed light on this?

I get that message if the DISPLAY environment variable is not set, or if
it's set incorrectly, when I start xfdesktop. Otherwise, running it
from a shell works fine for me.

Can you start other X-based applications, e.g., xclock, from the same
shell? What is the output from

  echo $DISPLAY

?

sure enough there is no DISPLAY environment variable set. So I set it and
then the error message became:

Failed to connect to session manager: Failed to connect to the session
manager: SESSION_MANAGER environment variable not defined

I notice there are several other variables missing which do appear on
another machine with working xfce system, i.e. one still on stretch
distribution, such as XDG_MENU_PREFIX=xfce-, XDG_CONFIG_DIRS=/etc/xdg
as well as SESSION_MANAGER and several others.
