Re: A puzzle with internet time and NIST time
Am 16.10.2012 um 15:48 schrieb Paul E Condon: I think you are mistaken about the sync only once a day. The signals giving the year month and day are given once a day, but the precise time-tics are given throughout the day. My clock has an indication when it is receiving the radio signal which goes out when I move to a place where the signal is weak, or when I change the battery and it has not yet locked-in on the rhythm of the signal. Then, for a time, the hour, minute, and second are good, but the date is wrong. Then after a while, the correct date and day-of-week appear. I think the date signal is actually more frequent than once a day, but definitely less frequent than once a second. This is also the way that it is claimed to work in the marketing materials. Maybe you have a better radio clock, but most the cheap ones (20 - 40 EUR/USD) sync once a day, or on demand by reset. The process is as follows: 1. The sender emits the signal as a pulse every second (low or high bit) 2. The bits sent in one minute (59, 60 or 61 seconds) form a full record containing date, time, daylight saving, leap year, leap seconds and other information 3. The antenna of your clock receives the signal and tries to get the complete information of a cycle. This can need many minutes if the signal is noisy. Or it can fail. Or it only works in the night because of 'noise'. 4. The clock tries to move the clockhands in the correct position, and/ or tries to set the displays for date, weekday, and second. The last two radio clocks I threw away had problems with step 4. They synced after reset (I tried often and also changed batteries, cleaned the contacts etc.), but the clockhands stopped at wrong positions. And it always was the same offset. The reason for my puzzlement is that the clock has always behaved in a way consistent with the above --- for about twelve years starting when I lived in California and continuing here in Colorado, where I now live --- until recently when I noticed this 16sec offset. Your wallclock is out of order. If you want to know it for sure, you can build a receiver for the signal, connect it to your computer and configure it into ntpd. There is enough documentation and software available for free about this. The material for one receiver costs around 10-20 USD. In my best time I had two time-servers with 6 such receivers connected to the servers. They received the British, Swiss and German time signals. I have no knowledge of international time signals. I'm sure there is world-wide coordination, or perhaps the word is harmonization. Time is coordinated internationally since more than 100 years. Each country has its own metrologic institute coordinating the time with the central bureau AFAIK in Paris. You can read everything about it in the internet. If and since when the US take part of this coordination--I don't know. The US do not like international agreements. Have the US signed the Human Rights, or the international Woman Rights? I think it is possible to disable the fakeRAID in the Bios. Probably If I am not able to install linux with Windows using this fakeRAID. I will just erase windows and install only Linux (Debian) using a software RAID 0. I think that should be quite straightforward with the Debian installer. Re: Vaio Z RAID 0
Hi Dan, the good news is that I can confirm that it is possibly to run Linux on a VAIO SVZ13, using the original Intel-RAID0 and without destroying the pre-installed Windows. The bad news is that the way I did it is probably not easy to follow for everyone, and it might require some luck (i.e. using the correct versions of everything, and in the right order). Unfortunately I cannot give you precise advice, but maybe telling you about my experiences installing Linux on this device will be of some help. However, in my case I did not install Debian Wheezy but Xubuntu 12.04. For this I had to use Ubuntu's "alternate installer", which I believe behaves very similar to the Debian installer, although I guess there are some differences. But before running any installer, I actualled used a Linux-Live-CD (GRML 2012.05) to back up (using ntfsclone) and shrink (using ntfsresize) the Windows partitions and to repartition (using fdisk -uc) the Intel-RAID0. If I recall correctly, the original partitioning was: p1 = recovery p2 = Windows boot loader p3 = Windows 7 p4 = hibernation I deleted p1 and p4 and shrank p3. Later during the installation, I used p1 for the Linux / filesystem, and the space gained from p3&p4 for /home. I do not recall having any trouble creating the filesystems. But if I had, I would have tried creating the filesystems manually via GRML, and then telling the installer to simply use the existing filesystems (which I believe is possible, but admittedely I'm not completely sure). For me the biggest snag was installing GRUB to the MBR, which requires giving the correct device name, i.e. /dev/mappers/isw_something or so. But in the end it worked, and dual-booting between Windows and Linux works fine so far. As such, I cannot confirm the statement from Julien's blog that "this kind of RAID is not supported correctly by GRUB". Another internet resource which might contain helpful hints is this thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/sony/675057-ubuntu-linux-svz1311.html Hope this helps and good luck, Frank P.S. this is the first time I use google-mail to reply to this list, so if this ends up in the wrong place or breaking the thread, I apologize. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Also large soundboxes, machinery can disturb the signal. I also experienced an unusual problem (because its unusual to have so many receivers): I positioned 3 receivers with antennas tuned to the same frequency in a line with a small distance between them. Then they disturbe each other. Around 10 cm (4 inches) distance between them solved the problem. [ RAID-MD-ISSUE ]
I am trying to create Raid1. I have got three hard disks. On one of the hard disk I have installed debian. And on my other two hard disks I want to do Raid1. I've tracked the problem down now, and found another, stranger (but easily resolved!) problem. My .profile defines several bash functions. When logging in from gdm3, my .xession-errors file was getting a "function: not found" on every one of them, and executing all of the commands in the function. The particular symptom I was seeing before came because I had a function defined as function label { sed -e 's/^[ \t]*//' | enscript -r -d dymo450 -B -f Times-Roman12 -M Address ; } (if your news reader wraps that, it was all one line in the file and in my post) Using the alternate syntax label () { sed -e 's/^[ \t]*//' | enscript -r -d dymo450 -B -f Times-Roman12 -M Address ; } works just fine -- no error, and no blank label. I've got *no* idea why the function keyword wasn't being recognized. Re: Vaio Z RAID 0

Hi Frank, Thanks a lot for your answer! It is good news that Linux runs in this laptop. I shrink the windows partition using Windows. I think that Windows messed up something because I can not even create a ntfs partition using Windows... Maybe I can use the Windows copy that comes with the laptop using virtualbox. I use most of the time linux and not Windows. I am creating now the rescue DVDs. Windows 7 takes 5 DVDs!!! Best, Dan You need to use the Windows Disk Manager to shrink the windows partition because both the actual partition and the file system need to be adjusted. After doing this, you should check the partition for errors. Only then should you try to do anything else. Using RAID 0 (not really RAID because there is no redundancy) for a primary file system is a scary proposition. Both drives need to be working or your system is in deep trouble. Given that disk failures probably account for the majority of hardware problems, I personally would try to get rid of the RAID 0 entirely. To remove RAID 0, you may have to copy your Windows partitions to another drive temporarily, then try to break the array and copy the partitions back to just one drive. This means that you need to resize the Windows partitions so that they fit onto a 128G drive. Once you have your partitions copied, try booting from a live cd and use gparted to create new Windows partitions on one disk and Linux partitions on the other. Copy the Windows partitions back and try rebooting into Windows. This may actually require reinstalling Windows (do a repair-type installation so you don't wipe out your other Windows programs). Don't reformat the disks but do allow Windows to try to repair them if needed. And keep the copies of the original partitions until you have this working. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Newbie password problem(s)
I've been doing a series of Debian installs over the last several months. YES. There are easier ways to do things. *BUT* my purpose is _educational_ rather than "efficiency" ;) I have a history of problems with the root password not being recognized. If the problem *DOES* occur on a individual install iteration , it *WILL* occur on *EVERY* cold boot and *EVERY* time a root password is required. If the problem *DOESN'T* occur on a individual install iteration , it *WILL NEVER* occur on *ANY* cold boot and *ANY* time a root password is required. Whether or not the problem appears is independent of: install media - LiveCD or purchased 8 DVD set target machine - Lenovo ThinkPad or Lenovo desktop On reinstall the problem may or may not occur independent of previous condition. The current problem iteration: A minimum CLI install on the desktop machine. A successful boot which accepted my user name and password. Attempted to use su command, would not accept either password. Successful "apt-get install gdm3" using user password. Reboot resulted in expected GUI. Could not access either "Root Terminal" nor "Synaptic" from menu - password not accepted. When rebooting into "Rescue Mode", the last two lines displayed are: sulogin: root account is locked, starting shell root@localhost:~# At this point I'm allowed to do "apt-get install xyz" - no password required. Just wanted a quick reply, to know what package played audio only tracks. They are called tracks when I place them into the televisions DVD player. The version of Debian in this case might make a difference but I just wanted the name of something that played them. I would adjust it to suit my version of Debian Wheezy. Naturally I would have checked that the CD/DVD player was working, and in that case it doesn't matter if it can play CD's or DVD's I don't think? If I had been able to mount it, I would have known the extension the tracks/files have. [Thanks Kelly for that info Kelly] Doesn't matter, a program in windows XP called "Arcade" can read and play them so I'm right. I would just have liked to listen to them while booted into Linux, because my windows partition is only there for emergencies such as this. Thanks for your help. As always much appreciated. In my install of Gnome in Squeeze, the word 'Epiphany' does not appear in "About". It does appear in a pop-up when one hovers the cursor over the launch icon for Epiphany in the upper menu bar. But pop-ups are typically disabled. So a new user can work a long time with Gnome without realizing that the browser has a given name. If you realize this situation, you should understand that for the typical new user your question is meaningless. What does he mean by a name? Browser is browser. Be more forgiving. Gnome does make it pretty hard to understand what is really happening. -- Paul E Condon pecon...@mesanetworks.net -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". 32bit binaries on 64bit system?
Dear Debian-user, newly installed AMD64 Squeeze. I've decided to try installing Debian in 64bit for the first time, and restoring my home files has exposed a 32bit legacy. "wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32" So I installed all the ia32libs, but the error is occurring. Clearly the "ELF class ELFCLASS32" is not being recognized as having libraries available. This is one small binary, but if I can get ELFCLASS32 recognized for one little binary, then it will be available for any others, too. Suggestions? My Google-fu reveals answers for particular applications, but nothing which makes it system-wide.
