map '-' to '_' and '_' to '-'

2010-11-12 Thread Kamaraju S Kusumanchi
While working on my Debian box (which btw is a mix of Lenny and Squeeze), I
find that I type the underscore character ('_') more often than the dash
character ('-'). It could be file names, variable names while writing code
etc.,

Typing '_' involves holding the shift key while typing '-' does not involve
any. I am wondering if there is a way at the OS (or shell) level solution to
remap '-', '_' one to another so that typing '_' does not involve holding
shift key but typing '-' does.

Any ideas/comments/suggestions/pointers etc.,?

thanks
raju

Take a look at the netatalk maintainer scripts in "/var/lib/dpkg/info"
to see why they are failing.

Actually I am not so much concerned as to speeding up the machine as
for using its all abilities - MMX tech. for example. I do not in any

packages for different CPUs. In past times I saw for i586 CPU packages

Could You please tell me what is for? What do we want to conclude from

Actually, I though we had already come to the topic's end a while ago -

However when I go to http://myserver.org/info.php it prompts me to

Not all i586-CPUs have MMX, so I'm not sure if the kernel would use MMX
in i586-mode (despite for runtime-mmx-detection, but this option you
can have without march=i586). And you are always free to
a) compile a kernel with march=i586
b) use mmx in your favorite userland application

Load_Cycle_Count to stop growing.

2010-11-12 Thread Sthu Deus
Good day.

I have some trouble with growing number of

Load_Cycle_Count

parameter of my HDD. And the

Temperature_Celsius

as well. - Shown by smartctl utility.

So, my question is, How I can stop it spin down? - As I do understand,
w/ the help of sdparm utility (it is SATA drive).

Or may returm to the manufacturer defaults of the drive if any? - As I
tried before to play w/ laptop-mode-tools package, and I did not like
the results.

Or where I can look for a utility that spins it down? In the BIOS I saw
no option for spinning it down - so it is out of culprit list.

Thank You for Your time.

failure of gnome baker

2010-11-12 Thread Francesco Pietra
In my updated debian i386 sqeeze/gnome and debian amd64 lenny/gnome i
have no more workable cd-dvd burners. Gnome-baker reports burning (CD
data disk) OK, however the CD is unreadable. In contrast, k3b works
fine for both CD and DVD data disks. However, installation of k3b

apt-get update
apt-get install k3b

brought other problems in:

--command "k3b" also started the viewer VMD, which had to be closed
twice in order that k3b could be used.

--On restarting the computer, gnome could no more be called and a
RedHat window was brought in instead.

I liked gnome for years, and I use certain gnome-specific scientific
applications, such as GChempain. However I notice now that KDE has a
much more versatile burner (k3b), even if gnome baker could be used.
Also the pdf viewer "okular" (better that Adobe for certain scientific
uses) is part of KDE and alleviated from having to install Adobe. I
believe that gnome developers should consider these observations.
Lukily, okular can be used without problems even in gnome.

Thanks

about cd/dvd burners

2010-11-12 Thread Francesco Pietra
Hello:
gnomebaker returns OK burned, however the CD (data) is unreadable
(debian i386 squeeze). I tried brasero with same issues. The same with
amd64.

Finally I installed k3b on i386 squeeze,, getting fully functioning
data CD and DV D. Unfortunately, k3b installs too much kde, preventing
startx to launch gnome (a window from RedHat is called instead). Also,
command 'k3b' calld VMD (a viewer package); until VMD is closed twice,
k3b does not work. I had to --purge remove everything about k3b and
kde.

This means that I was unable - at this moment - to get a comfortable
cd/dvd burner with debian-gnome.

After moving /etc/modprobe.conf to the /etc/modprobe.d directory and naming it
parport.conf and rebooting, apparently everything else in my system behaves the
way it did before I installed the printer driver. The only problem is that the
printer doesn't work. If I want it to work, I have to leave /etc/modprobe.conf
there where Samsung put it.

Making /tmp noexec

2010-11-12 Thread James Allsopp
Hi,
I was reading this page about making tmp non-executable
(http://pario.no/2007/10/04/making-tmp-non-executable/) but it seems a
little out of date as I'm using Squeeze.

I changed fstab, and edited by 70debconf to

DPkg::Pre-Install-Pkgs {"mount -o remount,exec
/tmp";"/usr/sbin/dpkg-preconfigure --apt || true";};
DPkg::Post-Invoke{"mount -o remount /tmp";};

is this correct? Aptitude still works fine, but I was wondering if
anyone had experience of pitfalls with this?

Would I replicate this for my /var partition and is there any point to
doing this with /home?

Thanks,
Jim

I dunno how that adapter works (and it's quite expensive and low
performance! wouldn't have been better to replace your current VGA card
with a new one featuring 2 VGA outputs? :-?) but if I understood you
correctly, you are looking for a Xinerama/Dual view separate layout, what
is quiteeasy to get from one VGA card with dual outputs.

The problem I see here is to understand how Xorg sees the USB adapter and
how could you configure a dual view setup with that device or even
whether if it is possible to achieve that (I'm not sure Xorg can manage
two separate VGA adapters and join both desktops but run as independent
screens).

Greetings,

Dont know if these commands are magic but they work quite good. ;)

Shows all packages from multimedia.org:
$ aptitude search ~Omultimedia

Shows only the installed one:
$ aptitude search ~Omultimedia |grep ^i

There some documents about that (load_cycle_count), you can review them
here:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Laptop#Hard_drive_spin_down_problem
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/acpi-support/+bug/59695

As per temperature, some hard disk manufacturers read raw values and not
normalized, just be sure you are reading/interpreting in the right manner:

http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/smartmontools/wiki/FAQ#Whyismydisktemperaturesreportedbysmartdas150Celsius

Besides, is hard disk the only device getting warm? Maybe you are facing
a general cooling problem? :-?

Nouveau and Nvidia backlight brightness

2010-11-12 Thread Matt Simmons
Hello,
I am running Squeeze on my laptop: a macbook pro 7,1.Most is going well,
except the backlight screen brightness. Using the nouveau driver (this
laptop has a 320M), it sets my max_brightness to 1025 according to /sys/.
Unfortunately, a brightness of 1025 is extremely dim, and supposedly the
brightness should be more like 40,000 on this guy. Anyway, installing the
NVidia proprietary driver yields strange results (download from NVidia, not
debian repos), there is nothing in the folder /sys/class/backlight at all!
Kernel 2.6.32-5 amd64.

Thanks,
Matt

Does anyone have a tip on a good search application in Squeeze repository?

OK, good. The rest of your system is working as before. That's what I wanted
to know. Now look for evidence that the parport_pc module is getting the
options
passed to it in the options statement in /etc/modprobe.d/parport.conf. For
example:

   dmesg|grep parport

You should see a message that identifies the I/O port address, the interrupt
level (IRQ) and the DMA channel that was specified in
/etc/modprobe.d/parport.conf.

If you do, then it is safe to assume that the correct options are being
passed to the kernel module. And that, after all, is the intended purpose
of /etc/modprobe.d/parport.conf. If the correct options are being passed
to kernel module parport_pc, then the problem must be that something in the
printer driver, perhaps a boot-up script, perhaps not, is explicitly looking
for /etc/modprobe.conf and trying to parse its data. If that is the case,
you may be able to find the script and edit it to look in
/etc/modprobe.d/parport.conf instead. If the logic is in a compiled program,
and the manufacturer does not provide source code for their driver, then
you are pretty much out of luck.

Actually, I swerved into getting it working this morning. No, it's not
ideal, and yes, a dual head card may have been a better choice, but I
got this at a fairly reasonable price.

Anyway, I have specified all devices in xorg.conf now and have the
USB2VGA display as "Screen 1" to the right of the main display. XFCE
treats it as a separate workspace and switching workspaces on the main
display ("Screen 0") has no effect on it, exactly as I want. The only
problem is that its slowness does show when running a program that
continuously updates the screen (Fldigi) but other software does not
have a problem.

Thanks for the reply.

MIPS and FLOPS are artificial measurements that don't necessarily
relate to the actual applications you are running. Do a Google on
Linux Performance Testing to get a large list and select the tool or

I had done
apt-get install gnome-desktop-environment

then
startx
gives an error along the lines of : "startx: unknown command."

Now I have also done
apt-get install gdm
apt-get install gnome

then, on boot gnome starts, I get a login window, do log in,
but am only given a blue screen without anything!!!

What to do?

Also the pdf viewer "okular" (better that Adobe for certain scientific
uses) is part of KDE and alleviated from having to install Adobe. I
believe that gnome developers should consider these observations.
Lukily, okular can be used without problems even in gnome.

I use k3b in gnome under squeeze because it has features I need at
times. You'll need to install a whack of kde depends along with it if
you don't have something kde installed already but it works, at least
for me. I have a few kde apps installed that I can't find gnome
equivalents for and they work well.

I've often thought that gnome could use a better or more full featured
burning app. I rarely burn cd's any more so brasero may be a solution to
but I haven't needed to use it so I can't say from experience.

This used to be a simple matter of proper xorg configuration. I
don't know if it still applies, but basically:

Add a second "Device" section for your new adapter. Let's say
the identifier is "USBadapter".

Add a second "Monitor" section for the attached monitor.
Identifier is "Monitor2".

Add a new "Screen" section:

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Second Screen"
Device "USBadapter"
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Virtual 12801024 # or whatever
EndSubSection
EndSection

and finally, modify your section "ServerLayout" to add this
line:

Screen "Second Screen" RightOf "Default Screen" # or
LeftOf, or Above or Below

Restart X, and it ought to be good.

You may need to increase your default Virtual to encompass both
screens.

# dmesg|grep parport
[ 11.593036] parport0: PC-style at 0x378 (0x778), irq 7 [PCSPP,TRISTATE]
[ 71.028713] lp0: using parport0 (interrupt-driven).

Then I edited the `install.sh' script as you suggested. I'm pretty sure to
have replaced all the possible occurrences of any expression resulting in
/etc/modprobe.conf with the corrispondent instance that gives
/etc/modprobe.d/parport.conf in a clever manner. Then I reinstalled and
rebooted, but the printer is dead. It lives up again if I restore things as
the manufacturer wants: /etc/modprobe.conf. Editing that script is just the
same as merely replacing by hand /etc/modprobe.conf with
/etc/modprobe.d/parport.conf.

Now I wish to uninstall all and use the debianized packages at:

  http://www.bchemnet.com/suldr/

Are they the same that you use? Can you check the toner level with them?
That's the only reason Samsung software is useful. If there's another way, I'm
going to uninstall it.

Thanks
Rodolfo

Could You please share w/ me how You found those? - I would like to

Yes, it is w/ HDD only - but it is not so much w/ temperature my
worries are as for spinning down.

X-)

Well, no "black magic"... I was aware of the problem (maybe I read about
that behaviour in another mailing list or just noticed via RSS, anyway,
it was "old news" for me -it was noticeable in other distros, BTW-).

For instance:

https://encrypted.google.com/search?complete=0&hl=en&source=hp&biw=1280&bih=839&q=load_cycle_count&btnG=Google+Search
https://encrypted.google.com/search?hl=en&complete=0&biw=1280&bih=839&q=load_cycle_count+smartctl&btnG=Search

Can give you a start point for digging.

kernel option for scsi emulation

2010-11-12 Thread Hugo Vanwoerkom

Hi,

I have 2 kernels: Debian's 2.6.32-5-686 and my own 2.6.36-hvw.

The former no longer has /dev/hd* the latter does as shown by blkid. [1]
blkid for 2.6.32-5-686 and [2] for 2.6.36-hvw.

What kernel option is responsible for that? Obviously I don't have that
set in 2.6.36-hvw.

Thanks.

Hugo

Did you install xorg or at least xinit? This is not necessarily done
automatically when you install gnome, AFAIK (to allow people to run the
X server on another computer if they want to).

Don't expect any "WOW". If your application uses MMX, it does not lose
this option on a non-mmx-kernel, and vice versa.

GDB and ld.so?

2010-11-12 Thread Oliver Schneider
Hi folks,

does anyone here know the magic incantation required to get GDB to accept a
breakpoint within the loader (ld.so), in particular on dl_main(), on a x86_64
system?

(gdb) set environment LD_PRELOAD /path/to/debug/ld.so
(gdb) b dl_main
(gdb) run ...

does not seem to do the job.

Thanks in advance,

// Oliver

Did so. The situation now is: Finally, I am using gmail from Iceweasel
started from debian gnome. But my gnome setup is still very basic:
After login, there is basically only a blue screen. By leftclicking
the mouse, it opens a popup menu, and I could start this browser from
there. But the window do nao have any re-size icons , as usual.
There must still be something missing?

Don't you see the task bar, desktop icons...? Nothing?

"dpkg -l | grep "gnome-"

And put here the output so we can see what packages you have installed.

In brief, if I got it correctly, your Maxtor hard disk (IDE) is being
detected as "/dev/hd*" in 2.6.36 (using legacy pata module) and as "/dev/
sd*" in 2.6.32 (using new libata module).

Back to days I was using openSUSE, pata modules were loaded by telling
the kernel "hwprobe=-modules.pata" at GRUB prompt (or by stating so in
menu.lst). Maybe you are inadvertenly loading legacy pata module or you
have compiled the kernel with that flag switched on :-?

Compare both "lsmod | grep ata" outputs.

It reads as if the module is not enabled. The module is enabled by
default after installation in the postinst script but in your case
there seems to have been a problem with that step. Is your
/etc/apache2/apache2.conf missing?

Enable the module.

  $ sudo a2enmod php5
  $ sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart

The a2enmod and a2dismod utilities manage the symlinks in
/etc/apache2/mods-enabled. Those symlinks point to the contents of
the files in /etc/apache2/mods-available. It is similar to the
a2ensite and a2dissite utilities.

Good suggestion:

sata_via5380 0
scsi_mod 100151 5 sg,sd_mod,ums_cypress,usb_storage,libata

So both kernels have libata, but only 2.6.32-5-686 has pata_via and sr_mod.

Tell the HD to stop unloading its heads, and to stop spinning down (it
*has* to unload heads when it will spin down). It will increase power
consumption, and it will make you more vulnerable to head crashes (while
unloaded, the heads are far more resistant to vibration). OTOH it will
increase the HD lifetime, as loading/unloading heads slowly damage the
head assembly.

Usually, hdparm -B and hdparm -S can do it. The BIOS might fight
against you and might set it back behind your back on reboot,
suspend/resume, etc.

Get better cooling. If it is impossible, well, there is nothing you can
do other than stop giving the disk so much work to do until it cools
down.

Use hdparm.

Well. - No comparisons!

Though w/ temperature it seems things got normal again - so no question
here any more for now at least.

But w/ the HDD head parking it is still an issue, currently it is:

193 Load_Cycle_Count0x0032 080 080 000Old_age

All that applications share the same backend (growiso, cdrecord/wodim) so
how about debugging what is failing within brasero? Maybe you could burn

You shouldn't have needed to add it since the default is that it is
already configured there. Perhaps the contents had become munged up

The gnome environment is launched by running gnome-session. This is
done for you automatically if you're using GDM. If you're using startx,
then you need to add "gnome-session" to your .xinitrc file (or is it
.xsession? I can't remember, it's been forever since I've used startx).

Good suggestion:

h...@debian:/$ grep ata 11.2.6.32-5-686.lsmod
ata_generic 2047 0
libata 115745 3 ata_generic,sata_via,pata_via
pata_via 5701 4
sata_via 5608 0
scsi_mod 101401 6 ums_cypress,usb_storage,sg,sr_mod,sd_mod,libata
h...@debian:/$ grep ata 11.2.6.36-hvw.lsmod

libata 116648 2 ata_generic,sata_via
sata_via 5380 0
scsi_mod 100151 5 sg,sd_mod,ums_cypress,usb_storage,libata

So both kernels have libata, but only 2.6.32-5-686 has pata_via and sr_mod.

lsmod | grep sr_mod
h...@debian:/usr/src/linux-2.6.36$ grep CONFIG_BLK_DEV_SR .config
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_SR=m

that is the SCSI CDrom module and that is set in the kernel.
Don't know why it does not show up in lsmod.

That leaves the pata_via module and that indeed is not set.

So the difference in getting /dev/hd* is solely due to the absence of
the pata_via module?

Newbie alert: Single package from unstable

2010-11-12 Thread Matt Simmons
Hi, how can I install a package from unstable? (currently running testing)
For example, I know it should be something like:
# apt-get install uswsusp/unstable

However, my output is:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Release 'unstable' for 'uswsusp' was not found

But I konw that uswsusp has a package in unstable. Do I need to set
something up in sources.list? If so, this is my current sources.list:
deb http://ftp.gtlib.gatech.edu/debian/ testing main non-free contrib
deb-src http://ftp.gtlib.gatech.edu/debian/ testing main non-free contrib

deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main contrib non-free

Do I add another line that just contains the same thing, but with sid or
unstable? Like:
deb http://ftp.gtlib.gatech.edu/debian/ unstable main non-free contrib
deb-src http://ftp.gtlib.gatech.edu/debian/ unstable main non-free contrib

If so, how does apt differentiate between testing and unstable when I want
to install a package? Do I always need to explicitly state /testing
or /stable?

Thank you for your time.

Hi,

I was making some pcs and after showing him how in another machine, I assigned
someone to
put in a cpu and they bent some of the pins. there are about 900 !!! (around 30
rows of 30).
Now it wont install into the socket AM3.

I have tried straighting them by using a credit card (or thin new york
metrocard) as a group lineup
as well as using a
lead pencil 5mm holder to straighten the indiviual tines (pins) as well as a
thin mending needle.

however it still resists putting into the socket on the asus motherboard.

any other ideas on how to ease it in?

Thanks

IIRC, "gnome-desktop-environment" and "gnome-core" should be also installed.

If the above both packages are not installed, get them by now :-)

Re: Recovery from hard drive failure

2010-11-12 Thread Peter Tenenbaum
Hi again --

As I'm studying the situation, my plan for how to do this recovery has
evolved a bit. What I'm planning now is the following:

1. Install the new hard drives
2. Boot off the rescue CD
3. Use fdisk to set up one of the drives as the system / boot drive, with 3
DOS-style partitions (boot, swap, and everything else)
4. Install grub in the boot partition
5. Recover my backup to the new system disk via restore
6. Update /etc/fstab to match the configuration I set up in (3) and (4),
since I'm not setting up the new hard drives exactly the way that the old
drive was configured
7. Follow the instructions at
http://linuxconfig.org/Linux_Software_Raid_1_Setup to incorporate the system
disk and the second disk as a RAID-1 array.

If anyone wants to jump in and shout, "No, you fool!" when they see this
plan, let me know.

Mark -- I've decided against using LVM because (a) it adds another level of
complication to the overall recovery / RAID-ification procedure, which at my
low level of expertise I really do not need, and (b) it's not clear to me
that LVM offers that much benefit for a relatively simple home system with
more hard drive capacity than I really need. Maybe on my next system...

I certainly at some point said
apt-get install gnome-desktop-environment
apt-get install gnome-core
(in that order). Why are them not installed then? Try it again.

I am thinking that perhaps running 'tasksel' and letting it install a
base installation might be a good idea.

  $ sudo tasksel

Then select 'desktop' and let it install the base packages. That is
probably equivalent to doing:

  $ sudo aptitude --without-recommends -o APT::Install-Recommends=no install
'~t^desktop$' '~t^gnome-desktop$'

I use almost the same configuration:

# cat /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/20tmpperms
DPkg::Pre-Invoke{"mount -o remount,exec /tmp";};
DPkg::Post-Invoke {"mount -o remount /tmp";};

And my fstab looks like this:

# grep tmp /etc/fstab
/dev/mapper/root_vg-tmp_lv /tmp ext3 defaults,noexec,nosuid 0 2

It works OK. Regarding var, I wouldn't do it. Some files need execute
permissions. Others might have another opinion, though.
And /home, well, some of us like to have /home/${USER}/.dist/bin or
something similar in our ${PATHS}, so it depends on your setup.

The hostname should be set during boot time. The actual script is
/etc/init.d/hostname.sh using the contents of /etc/hostname. If the
hostname isn't getting set then it will cause problems.

Why isn't your hostname set at boot time? You will need to debug what
changed to cause that problem.

Did it the same way once. Look at the pins with a light source hitting them at
various angles. It will show which one are not straighten-up. When it fits on
the socket, try to exchange the CPU for a new one, (as I did).

I would try with another driver (no need to edit the current printer,
just add in CUPS as many instances as you need).

Possible candidates:

HP-LaserJet_1200-pxlmono.ppd (recommended PXL)
HP-LaserJet_1200-Postscript.ppd (generic PS)
hp-laserjet_1200-pcl3.ppd (from HPLIP)

You're lucky for having more than one option :-)

A better option would be to set APT::ExtractTemplates::TempDir to a
directory where programs can be executed. See apt-extracttemplates(1).

While dpkg is running, programs in /tmp are executable. If you're
paranoid enough, this may worry you.

> Would I replicate this for my /var partition

If you do this, you have to relocate /var/lib/dpkg/info to another
filesystem and bind-mount or symlink it so that the package maintainer
scripts can be run.

> and is there any point to doing this with /home?

It may help a little if you cannot trust your users, but note that they
can still run (at least) shell, perl and awk scripts by invoking the
interpreter.

There really isn't any substitute for carefully straightening the
pins. It is tedious but can be successfully accomplished. Just work
carefully and patiently. If you find yourself frustrated then pause,
take a break, and then come back to it. This is a task that requires
careful patience rather like straightening a bicycle wheel. In
addition to the techniques you described you may need to squeeze a pin
to straighten it if it is curved. A pair of flat tweezers has worked
for me for that purpose.

Be careful of electro static discharge and do not "zap" it while
trying to fix it! Also be careful of bending any individual pin too
much. It work hardens the metal and in a bad case might break off.

Side Note: Professional shops often have a metal block with the holes
drilled representing the socket holes. The holes are beveled to guide
the pins into the right locations. This type of custom made jig is
often used to straighten pins. We had several at my previous
employer.

Inspect the socket carefully. It is possible that one of the bent
pins bent one of the socket connections. If so then that may be
causing you the difficulty. The problem may now be in the socket
instead of the part. You will probably need a magnifying glass in
order to see well enough to inspect the socket pins since very little
is visible. Open and close the socket without the part in place and
look to see if there is any visible blockage of any of the pins.

Good luck!

You should

# echo 'APT::Default-Release "squeeze";' >> /etc/apt/apt.conf

which is just the simplest way of pinning. But just for one package I
would first try to download it from packages.debian.org and use
'dpkg -i' to install it.

Because the debian-installer has a nice interface to setting up raid I
recommend using it to do the heavy lifting. You can always stop after
getting a filesystem and then restore your present system onto the old
system.

Plus if you want raid then you probably want swap on raid too.
Otherwise if you have a disk failure and it is on the disk with the
swap then your system crashes. If swap is on raid too then the system
keeps running. And nicely that keeps both disks identical.

> 4. Install grub in the boot partition

For Lenny remember to install grub on both disks in the RAID. For
Squeeze that has been improved and I think is done automatically. But
for Lenny you will definitely need to manually ensure that grub is on
both drives. Otherwise if your first boot drive fails the second
drive won't have the boot code on it. You can always boot a rescue
disk to recover from that problem if you hit it.

Also plan to do a dpkg-reconfigure of your old kernel to regenerate
the initrd with the new raid configuration.

Personally I always set up lvm. It is worth the extra complexity.

JFYI (from my notebook):

9 Power_On_Hours 0x0032 049 049 000Old_age Always -
 20456
193 Load_Cycle_Count0x0032 074 074 000Old_age Always

194 Temperature_Celsius 0x0022 100 100 000Old_age Always

All that attributes are tagged as "old_age" not "pre-fail" which is soothing.

Note that the laptop has counted almost 2 years of "power on" (although
is indeed 4-5 years old but true is that is not always "on").

There was a Debian bug report tracking this problem:

acpi-support: excessively load cycles some hard drives

I would carefully read the comments in there before making any change.

The X11 keysyms for these characters are "minus" and "underscore". If
you run "xmodmap -pke | grep underscore" you should see which keycode has
these keysyms mapped.

For me, this is:
$ xmodmap -pke | grep underscore
keycode 20 = minus underscore minus underscore

I suspect that's a standard keyboard keycode so you'll get the same
results, but run it anyway to be sure.

You can remap this like so:
$ xmodmap -e "keycode 20 = underscore minus underscore minus"

That swaps minus and underscore.

You can put the part between quotes in your ~/.Xmodmap file and GNOME
should auto-load it (although I think I remember reading something
lately that this may change).

Finally, I suggest you not do this. I've make changes to my standard
keyboard in the past and when you switch to someone elses keyboard you
just get annoyed :-) I used to map CapsLock to Ctrl, but if you get too
used to that, YOU JUST END UP SHOUTING when you only meant to press
Ctrl.

I understand your argument about added complexity, but especially if you
don't know yet how you will use your disk's capacity, LVM is your
friend.

At work today, I prepared a virtual machine for a specific task. When I
realized that I had underestimated one of the filesystem's sizes, I just
needed to follow these steps:

- Add another virtual disk to the system
- Run pvcreate to prepare the disk for LVM
- Run vgextend to add the new space to the appropriate volume group
- Run lvextend to allocate the new space to the volume that was too
  small
- Run resize2fs to grow the filesystem

This was a matter of less than ten minutes (including lookup of the
exact syntax of the LVM commands) and it didn't involve any reboots or
even umounts.

In your case, it gets even easier. Initially, you just need to prepare
one partition for LVM and setup logical volumes for your filesystems
using the size you are sure they will need. If, at one point, you
realize you need more space, you just need to run two commands: lvextend
and resize2fs (assuming you are using ext[234]).

When you have free space in a volume group, you get another benefit as
well: you can snapshot your filesystems for backup runs or before
actions that you are afraid might damage things.

I consider myself to be a quite proficent linux user (almost ten years
of Debian experience), but didn't start using LVM until about a year
ago. I deeply regret that.

Whenever that happens to me, I try to observe the pins at close range

straighten the bent pin, by degrees. Wash, rinse, repeat, until no more
irregularities may be observed. If the CPU still won't stick in, I use
a magnifying glass. However, if there's more than 10-20 pins that are
bent, it may be a royal pain in the neck, because tolerances are real
small on those little bastards...

People who lack eye-hand coordination, have poor eyesight, are simply
clumsy, or are young, less than say, generally speaking, excluding
prodigies, 14-15 years old, should not be working on electronics.

Buy another CPU, chuck that one in the can, or hang in in a "trophy
case", and let this be a $50-$200 mistake the individual who dropped the
CPU, and others, can learn from.

Straightening bent CPU pins was much more possible when the pin count
was lower and the spacing wider, say socket 370/A and earlier. The
current pin densities of 939 and up make straightening more than a few
bent pins fall into the "not worth the effort" category.

If you have more than a dozen bent pins, replace the CPU, each the cost,
learn the lesson.

Bent pins during handling/installation is actually a minor reason why
Intel created the Slot 1 interface. The major reason was locking out
AMD from selling drop in compatible chips, but warranty claims due to
bent pins was a minor reason as well.

You need:
1) To add sources for "unstable" to your sources list. I.e.:
/etc/apt/sources.list:
[...]
deb http://apt.debian.org/debian/ sid main non-free contrib
2) Reload the sources:
apt-get update
3) Install the package telling the system you want the version from unstable:
apt-get -t sid install [my package]

Please pay attention that this will try to bring from unstable needed
depencies for [my package]. This can be OK or not for you.

If you just want *exactly* foo and anything else, you may need to recompile
the package, which I consider out of scope for a newbie.

More info reading man page for apt-get and related.

Cheers.
