Good Use for ClamAV

2010-04-07 Thread Freeman
I'll always be slowly catching up on comp tech.

I was using Knoppix and ClamAV to remove a virus for a friend when the
futility of it all hit me. The free anti-virus hopscotch game that windows
users play to feel safe. What wasted energy--over an OS I boot into maybe
7% of the time. They screw up half the time.

There isn't a big demand for ClamAV on the Debian partitions of a
laptop/desktop. But I'll be scheduling scans of the XP partition from
Debian. Doh!

There is even a ClamAV *win32* for the unlucky.

I don't scan my disk partitions with it, but all incoming as well as
outgoing email is scanned with ClamAV (by amavisd-new). ClamAV with some
3rd party signatures (SaneSecurity) works quite well in that. Not
because it detects good, but clamav_daemon is the only daemonized FREE
anti-virus for Linux.

And my Linux is a server for my Windows workstation. Without Windows, I
would not bother scanning viruses.

The sample page renders fine here, with iceweasel from lenny-backports

Try by starting the browser with a new (empty) profile.

What I find strange is you are getting the same problem with the direct

Well, I would not say "problems"... some "glitches" maybe, but nothing
serious if you put some care on it.

Anyway, updating the whole OS to testing just for the browser is having a
problem to display some CSS stuff is a bit... adventurous? :-)

recompiling the kernel with a different version name

2010-04-07 Thread Lorenzo Bettini

Hi

I've just recompiled the kernel from sources with the command

fakeroot make-kpkg --initrd --append-to-version=-recompiled kernel-image
kernel-headers

and installed it successfully.

However, the kernel name is

2.6.32.10+drm33.1-recompiled

and that "+drm33.1" seems to cause problems to Eclipse which does not
recognize it as a valid version (I think the problem is with the '+'
character).

Is there a way to change the version so that I can do without that '+'?

thanks in advance
Lorenzo

For most things, no. But the key combination to switch to the external
monitor requires that special Fn key, which is present only on the internal
keyboard.

Closing the lid may cause other problems. Many laptops are set up to
enter suspend or hibernate mode when the lid is closed, unless they are
currently installed in a docking station. Apparently yours isn't,
but this operating state is one that I'm not familiar with.

Maybe it doesn't work on yours because you're not doing it the way
I suggest. You insist on closing the lid and using an external keyboard.
The key combination to switch to the external monitor may not be
Fn+F7 on your laptop. Maybe it's Fn+F2. Consult your hardware documentation.
But there should be a way. xrandr is an X-specific tool. I know of no
equivalent
tool for the console. Once you switch to the external monitor with
Fn+F2, or whatever, and have verified that both text mode consoles and
the graphical console are using the external monitor, then try using
the external keyboard. If everything is still working, then try closing
the lid.

If this procedure doesn't work, then I'm out of ideas. You're on your own.

First of all, I don't know if you've already read this, but I recommend
the following web page to all those who need or want to compile a custom
kernel for Debian: http://www.wowway.com/~zlinuxman/Kernel.htm. It should
tell you all you need to know (and probably a lot more than you wanted to
know).

My suspicion is that you may have set variables such as CONFIG_LOCALVERSION
and CONFIG_LOCALVERSION_AUTO while configuring the kernel. Don't do that.
make-kpkg has it's own way of modifying the kernel version. This is
covered under Step 8 in the next-to-last paragraph.

There isn't a big demand for ClamAV on the Debian partitions of a

There is even a ClamAV *win32* for the unlucky.

How ClamAV is really good?
I don't have any problem with my XP last ~2y. since when I'm on Debian.

Mmmm, no error message in linux uses to mean the operation was performed

on device icon, check the device status with "mount" command.

I doubt that the following link is the one which the OP of this thread
found, but here is a link to the post that I was looking for
originally, and couldn't find. It was mentioned in passing in a
thread which was primarily about getting the free nv driver to work
with a new motherboard-embedded Nvidia graphics chipset. The OP
for that thread had his problem solved by an upload from unstable
to testing of a newer version of the nv driver, which recognized
the chipset in his board. But during the course of the thread,
Sven Joachim chimed in with the instructions for how to build the
missing nvidia kernel module needed by the proprietary nvidia driver.

Here is the link:

   http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2010/03/msg01364.html

I regret that I couldn't find it in time to solve the problem of
the OP of this thread, but I'm only human. Besides, it didn't hurt
him any to find the solution himself.

Good to know the Debian people are talented at that. Hate to think about the
sea of spam though.

I am remembering that my provider uses Spamassassin, but the settings are
light and it has never filtered Debian list addresses that I've seen.

I use Spambouncer on procmail. List spam is getting a spam-score of 0.
pattern matching is on. So I might add some more aggressive block-list
services to get that score up.

How do I get the mbr package to do its job quietly?

2010-04-07 Thread Stephen Powell
I have been experimenting with the mbr package. (mbr is a dependency for
the lilo package; so if you have lilo installed you have mbr package installed
too.) I usually install lilo to the master boot record (boot=/dev/hda
specified in /etc/lilo.conf). But in certain situations it is advantageous to
install lilo to the boot sector of a primary partition (boot=/dev/hda1) and
install a DOS-like master boot record program in the master boot record,
making the partition containing the lilo boot loader the active partition.

For example, on some of our Dell servers one can bring up a "boot menu" via
the BIOS setup program by pressing F12 during the POST process. (This is during
POST and before the actual boot process.) Upon completion of POST, the "BIOS
boot menu" (not to be confused with the boot menu of any boot loader) will
be displayed. One of the choices in this BIOS boot menu is "Boot to Utility
Partition", or something like that. This boots a maintenance partition
containing some hardware testing programs supplied by Dell. This works fine
if the master boot record is a standard DOS/Windows-style master boot record,
but does not work with Linux-style boot loaders, such as grub or lilo.
Of course, I can always add the maintenance partition to the lilo boot
menu, but our non-Linux-proficient technicians aren't used to this. I
want a Linux box to look just like a Windows box as viewed by a service
technician.

I could use DOS or Windows to install its master boot record program
with "fdisk /mbr" or fixmbr, or whatever, depending on the release of
DOS or Windows, and set the Linux partition active, and that works. But
Microsoft may claim that this means that our box requires a license
for DOS or Windows. I'd hate to burn a Windows license just to get its
master boot record installed, when that's all I'm using. It would seem that
the mbr package in Debian GNU/Linux is just the ticket for this sort of
problem. I have run the "install-mbr" program, and it works just as
expected. There is just one little nit left that I would like to take
care of. lilo advertises itself by printing out "LILO" on the screen
prior to booting the Linux kernel. That's fine. I want to see that.
mbr also advertises itself by printing out "MBR" on the screen when it
boots. So what I see at boot time is something like this:

   MBR

   LILO 22.8 Loading Linux
   BIOS data check successful

and then the Linux kernel boot messages. That's tolerable, but I'd
like that "MBR" advertisement to be eliminated. I read the man page
for install-mbr, and I can see how to eliminate the boot prompt,
which I have done, but I couldn't find a way to suppress the MBR
advertisement. The DOS/Windows mbr program is totally silent, a trick
that I would like to teach this program. Does anyone know of a way
to accomplish this? Or is this just something I have to live with?

Yep. I told you that some devices display this message. It happens to me
*always* with my mobile phone. It does not happen with standard usb flash
disk, though.

> step 3.

(...)

Which means it has been umounted.

I get the same behaviour than you, but only when I attach a special
device (GNOME recognizes the mobile phone as some kind of music stuff).

Try this:

1/ Plug on the device
2/ Type mount (to get the device listed)
3/ Type "umount /media/video" (adjust the command to point the right path)
4/ Type "mount"

With these steps I get no pop-up or warning messages and the device gets
umounted normally.

Is there a way to change the version so that I can do without that '+'?

First of all, I don't know if you've already read this, but I recommend
the following web page to all those who need or want to compile a custom
kernel for Debian: http://www.wowway.com/~zlinuxman/Kernel.htm. It should
tell you all you need to know (and probably a lot more than you wanted to
know).

I tried also with --revision, e.g.,

fakeroot make-kpkg --revision=lore01 --initrd
--append-to-version=-recompiled kernel-image kernel-headers

but I cannot seem to get rid of that +drm33.1 string:

linux-headers-2.6.32.10+drm33.1-recompiled_2.6.32.10+drm33.1-recompiled-10.00.Custom_i386.deb

My suspicion is that you may have set variables such as CONFIG_LOCALVERSION
and CONFIG_LOCALVERSION_AUTO while configuring the kernel. Don't do that.
make-kpkg has it's own way of modifying the kernel version. This is
covered under Step 8 in the next-to-last paragraph.

they do not seem to be set:

$ grep VERSION .config
CONFIG_LOCALVERSION=""
# CONFIG_LOCALVERSION_AUTO is not set

I haven't looked at this in detail, but probably you have to patch the
source and rebuild the package.

Of course not. This is free software, after all.

"10.00.Custom" is the
default value for --revision. The fact that you see it in the package
file name means that it did not recognize the option. Try it this way:

   fakeroot make-kpkg clean
   fakeroot make-kpkg --append-to-version -recompiled --revision x.x.xxx \
--initrd kernel_image kernel_headers

Note: you must always issue "make-kpkg clean" after running "make menuconfig"
or after running "make-kpkg" with any target other than "clean". Otherwise,
version and revision numbers will not work as expected. Assuming that you
are using official Debian kernel sources, you will want to make the value
for --revision match the "version" of the linux-source-2.6.32 package.
I know the web page I pointed you to is long and boring. But the answers to
all of your problems are in there. Where did you get your kernel sources,
by the way? And why are you compiling a custom kernel in the first place?

automate updates in Lenny

2010-04-07 Thread Jozsi Vadkan
how do you automate the updates in Lenny? [if you're using it as a
"desktop os", and you don't want to give: apt-get update; apt-get
upgrade -y every week..]?

i'm using this:

#!/bin/bash

RANDOMTIME=$(echo $[ ($RANDOM % 60 ) ] )
if ! grep -q "root dpkg --configure -a" /etc/crontab; then echo $RANDOMTIME" *
* * * root dpkg --configure -a; apt-get upgrade -y  > /dev/null 2>&1; apt-get
install -y > /dev/null 2>&1" >> /etc/crontab; fi

+ install "update-manager" package - because it will "apt-get update" in the
background [in random time - so the mirror servers "won't have loads"]. - at
least i think is gives out "apt-get update"

any other solutions/tips?

Are you sure that this is currently required? From the changelog:

With the new facility to regenerate ./debian, all the old strictures

I must confess I did not look at the change log. But the README file
(/usr/share/doc/kernel-package/README.gz) still documents it as necessary.
As to whether this is out of date or not, I do not know.
But there is one thing I *do* know: the --revision flag he was using was
not taking effect, as evidenced by the name of the package file produced.
And I also know that when I use "make-kpkg clean" before building the kernel
package, I never have any trouble. Note also that the comment above talks
about changing the version number, not the revision number. They aren't
the same.

That's a foolish thing to do, since blind acceptance can lead to a
broken system.

Anyway, the cron-apt package does what you want. It is recommended,
though, to use it only for downloads.

One more vote for cron-apt. It handles such tasks perfectly. Also you can use

OT: Script to add line to file if it doesn't exist

2010-04-07 Thread Kent West
I'm asking you folks, 'cause y'all know this stuff (I've been wrestling

I've got a text file; I just want a script (a one-liner sed or awk
command, etc, would be awesome) to check to see if the file contains a
certain line of text, and if not, to add that line at the bottom of the
file.

For example, say the file has these four lines in it:

john
mary
fred
martin

I want a script that will read the file and look for the name "fred",
and if it's found, leave the file alone, but if it's not found, to add
the name "fred" to the bottom of the file.

Any help appreciated. Thanks!

The README is out of date. I'll try and remember to fix this
(feel free to file a bug report to remind me).

I am not sure why the revision flag was not taking effect (I
have not had time to look into the mails yet), but the +drm3 is coming
from the kernel code (something is setting .localversions or the ilk).

No need for awk/sed. Something like this should work.

#!/bin/bash
i=`grep fred FILENAME.TXT | wc -l`

command, etc, would be awesome) to check to see if the file contains a
certain line of text, and if not, to add that line at the bottom of the
file.

For example, say the file has these four lines in it:

john
mary
fred
martin

I want a script that will read the file and look for the name "fred",
and if it's found, leave the file alone, but if it's not found, to add
the name "fred" to the bottom of the file.

Any help appreciated. Thanks!

#!/bin/sh
grep -w "fred" file || printf "%s\n" "fred" >>file

Awesome! Thanks!

Mart's method is the shell way. The 3GL Way is:

grep -w "$NAME" "$FILE"
TMP=$?
if [ "$TMP" = "1" ];
then
echo -e "$NAME\n" >> "$FILE"

Don't know if it's been fixed. Most likely not in lenny and the
standard kernels. I encounter this problem much too often and each time
it requires a hard reboot. Strangely, the mouse still works so I can
log out of kde, but then the shutdown process hangs until I hit
CTRL-ALT-DEL. Then it continues, but the laptop doesn't shut down all
the way. I have to hold the power button for 10 seconds and then it
does shut down. This is a very low level issue.

I don't use kppp. This happens with regular pon/poff. I suspect
it's related to the cdc_acm driver which is the one being used by my
phone (motorola e815) through a usb cable. It's not 100% repeatable.
I suspect something in the close routine is overwriting part of the
keyboard driver, but only some times. BTW, this is on a Dell 8600,
with the nvidia-legacy driver.

Unfortunately, the suggested fusesmb replacement is an apples to oranges kind
of thing.

Gary, I heard a rumour that cifs-utils 4.2 is supposed to address this issue,
but I can't find documentation on the web.

4.2 hasn't made it into Sid yet (so it will be a bit before Squeeze sees it).

OT:Script idea/problem

2010-04-07 Thread Thierry Chatelet
Hi,
Here is my idea:
First, in my village, I 'convert' quiet a few people (about 15 boxes) to use
Debian. They are rather happy about it, but I have a problem with update/
upgrade: they never know when they should do one. Most of them don't read
English, so subscribing them to debian security mailing list would not help.
And most of the time they would not know if the package(s) listed is/are in
their box. But kmail (and certainly other mail client) can run some script
according to the sender address. So, if we had a script that can read the
subject of mail coming from debian security, -- they always have the same
layout : [SECURITY] [DSA 2029-1] New packages fix--then
compare the package incriminated with the packages installed in their box, and
keep the mail if the package is present, otherwise trash it. I think they will
be able to see it is a mail from security and that they have to update their
machine.
So, if someone could help me to put that script together it will be a big
help. I have done a bit of programming so time ago in Turbo Pascal and in asme
(old time).

Making make-kpkg quieter

2010-04-07 Thread Cameron Hutchison
Is there any way to make make-kpkg (kernel-package 12.033) quieter? When
I run a "make-kpkg clean" it spits out lots of lines about unlinking
files in debian/... On a slow link, this is very annoying (if I forget
to run screen)

I have RTFM but I cannot see anything about making make-kpkg less
verbose (as opposed to the kernel makefiles).

I use SpamAssassin in my email server, and it does not get much spam
points with spam posted to mailing lists. The email headers are mean
much in spam analysing, and when the sender is a Debian or Apache
server, they do not look spammy.

But then, I don't get much spam from mailing lists. I get hundreds of
real spam daily, and a spam or two in a mailing list does not make me
sad. Mailing list maintainers do pretty good job filtering IMHO.

Yes, Ron, I told them to do it on a regular time, every other week, but they

Have (or do for) them install cron-apt and configure it to update on
$DOW. Then have a cron entry on *your* machine email them a nag.

Or... update-notifier or update-manager-gnome might be what they need.

Please file a wishlist bug. I have usually looked for more
insight into what is happening, and might not have considered the
desire to only see error with the level of effort it needs (though I
think the unlink verbiage comes from the underlying utility, not
 make-kpkg itself)
