I can vouch for this, R134A is not an ozone depeting refrigeratnt but
it is still a greenhouse gas and at approximatley 1300 times worse,
weight for weight with CO2.

smart arrays don't turn up as /dev/sda from memory /dev/cciss/c0d0 -

as for the other problem, lvm writes information onto the hard drives,
which is why you are seeing the error message, I believe there is a way
to tell the partition manager to clear all partitions on the disk to be
installed onto.

I would also stick to lvm on smartarrays, much easier to managing moving

Have you tried contacting HP support? IIRC, they support Debian.

I'm not surprised that is a difference beetween VMs and real hardware.
HP servers runs with CCISS driver not with standard sda I know that.
I've tried to join HP support. First time, they said they don't support

supporting Debian...

I'm waiting for an answer from the support if they know that problem.

It seems that in amd64 and HP servers, install steps are not in the same
order. In fact The cciss is loaded just before partman starts
(installing scsci-modules and scsi-extra-modules) not at kernel boot.

In preseed file, the line: d-i partman-lvm/device_remove_lvm boolean
true tells that old LVM configuration have to be erased without

The telephone company uses dry nitrogen to purge telephone cables
(sealed conduits which contain hundreds of twisted pairs).

The short answer: There is no practical way for a small user to
produce compressed air which is free from oil vapour and moisture; the
proper solution is dry nitrogen.

More detail: In petrochemical plants, from time to time there is an
air line fire in which combustion takes place within the line; the
steel pipe of the line (which may run hundreds of feet) grows red-hot
and sags in the pipe rack as the combustion progresses from one end of
the line to the other. This can happen when the oil vapour is not
removed after the air exits the compressor, and when a large
compressor is in continuous service. The oil comes from the
compressor lubrication system. The amount of oil coming out of a
small home compressor generally is too small to be hazardous. The oil
problem does not exist with small diaphragm-type compressors.

Water is another matter. Almost every mechanic has experienced a slug
of water which makes its way down the line and out a nozzle or into a
pneumatic wrench. This is because condensate traps are not perfect,
and they don't always get emptied routinely. Water is bad enough, but
hardly anything makes a worse mess than a spray of oily water.

I doubt that it is possible to get a computer board or power supply
cleaned properly up after being sprayed with oily water; the only hope
would be immersion in a capacitor-safe, plastic-safe solvent such as
freon, and even that would ruin the fan bearings.

How-to: Any welding supply house can sell you a tank (2000 psi) and
regulator with gages for dry nitrogen, just like the telephone company
uses. And they can fix you up with a hose and nozzle with a
pushbutton valve. When you finally empty the tank, you haul it back
to be refilled.

Just make sure that the tank which you purchase is one which is
intended to be privately-owned and make sure that you hang onto the
receipt. Many tanks have a welding supply company name forged or
deeply stamped into the neck of the tank. So, for example, if you
have a tank stamped "FOO Welding Supply" and you take it to BAR
Welding Supply to be refilled, BAR may refuse to fill the tank; this
is because theft of tanks is a major problem; that's why the expensive
markings are manufactured into tanks. So ask about third-party
refilling before you purchase a tank.

Rental of a tank is too expensive for the individual user; this is because
a daily "demurrage" charge accrues after the first 30 days.

Configurint order of fallback fonts

2010-02-14 Thread Dotan Cohen
How does one configure the order of fallback fonts? For instance, I
have fonts A and B which both contain Greek glyphs. When writing in
Open Office in font C which does not have the glyphs, the OS shows the
glyphs from font A. I would prefer it to show the glyphs from font B
without my explicitly having to tell it to use font B in each place
that Greek is shown.

An annual gentle suck around the fans, and any area which has

This
is true assuming one's case was designed and built for proper air flow. A
computer case with many fans sucking air in, with pushing air out will
accumulate
dust on the computer components quicker. Believe it or not dust will also tend
to collect quicker on the components when the is reverse pressure like a
vacuum, such as when many fans push air out of the case rapidly.

Additionally, the use of a household vacuum (with plastic nozzle) has been
useful and safe for my computers too.

And also quite handy when you discover you have a slow leak and need to
limp to a tire repair place or discover the spare is flat. Don't ask
how I know...

I've cleaned PCs and other stuff for years with an air compressor and
have yet to have a problem. Most compressors come with a regulator
that allows control of the pressure going to the hose. 40 PSI or so is
adequate for an air nozzle, in fact a higher pressure is not
recommended by most air nozzle manufacturers. I just see to it that I
keep the nozzle several inches from the board and components.

If you don't want to spend the money on an air compressor, a small
vacuum cleaner that you can connect the hose to the output makes a nice
unit for cleaning PCs and such. Put the crevice attachment on the end
of the hose and you get a very nice directed stream of air that is as
effective as a compressor and air nozzle. Small Shop-Vacs can be found
for the cost of a few cans of air.

Thanks, Camaleón. I really thought that the font fallback was handled
by the OS, not by OOo itself. Therefore, while this solves my current
issue, it still leaves the general case unsolved. Is this always
handled at the application level, or is there OS font substitution as
well?

I've read somewhere that udev is able to work from within a chroot,
which is why you need to bind or rbind mount it as suggested above.

I'd say "fifty-fifty" :-)

> Therefore, while this solves my current
> issue, it still leaves the general case unsolved. Is this always handled
> at the application level, or is there OS font substitution as well?

It is explained a bit in the above link (copy/paste):

***
OOo uses several ways to find a suitable replacement:

* font alias information provided by the system (e.g. from a fonts.dir
file)
* hard-coded list of fallback-fonts, from VCL.xcu (tried first)
* alternative font name spellings
* font-attributes (e.g. does it have CJK-characters, is it a Symbol-font)
or style (serif/non-serif, proportional/non-proportional)

if all that fails as well:

* use a default font
***

The first point ("font alias provided by the system") is what I am
currently using for Iceweasel: I do not have installed Helvetica font
face in my system so the default fontconfig setup "auto-replaces"
Helvetica with Nimbus Sans, with looks horrible in my system (I don't
have anti-aliasing enabled).

In order to get another font rendered, I had to create a "~/.fonts.conf"
file to give the highest preference to Arial instead Nimbus Sans. This
way, whenever Helvetica is found, it just renders Arial, because of the
aforementioned setting.

This works very well with Iceweasel but I guess it will depend on each
application. As long as apps honor this setting (it seems OOo and
Iceweasel do), it should be possible to perform a more /fine-grained/
font susbtitution.

I found this Debian FAQ very useful when i was looking for information
about fonts:

Well, actually that's what the thread pointed to above was originally
about, and a conclusion was that while it's really fancy to have lxc

Newer kernel then 2.6.26-2 fails to restart Intel i7 860 with P55 chipset.

2010-02-14 Thread Mike Viau

Hi there,

I have been trying to figure out why my Debian Lenny system is unable to reboot
after updating my Linux kernel.

This question was asked on my behalf on the Linux Kernel Mailing List @

http://lkml.org/lkml/2010/2/11/276

I was wondering if anyone here was running a similar hardware setup? And what
experiences you have with compiling more recent kernels then Debian's 2.6.26-2.

I am using the amd64 variant.

Thank you!

gawk may not be the default awk workalike in lenny, but it is
certainly available in lenny, at least it was a couple of months ago,
just before I switched to squeeze.

awk is a virtual package provided by both the real package mawk and the
real package gawk. On my Lenny system, mawk is installed, but gawk is not.
Most awk scripts will work fine with mawk. But occasionally an awk script will
use features that don't work with the mawk implementation of awk but will work
with the gawk implementation of awk.

   aptitude install mawk_ gawk

will replace mawk with gawk. It is possible to have both installed,
in which case gawk seems to override mawk.

(My, what a tongue twister!)

Mmm. But I have only gawk, and installed neither. Nor any other awk. It

this seems to be a link to all Changelogs; but clicking e.g. on "xorg 1:7.4-2"

This is handled by the alternatives system, gawk has a higher priority
than mawk so if you don't take any measures it will provide /usr/bin/awk.
See update-alternatives(8).

Well, mawk has been of priority 'required' for a very long time, so I
guess you removed it manually at some point. Any method to install
Debian will install all required packages, AFAIK.

The answer has been given but here's an example script which uses
"read":

#!/bin/bash
IFS=, read -a numbers < <(echo one,t w o,three)
printf '<%s>\n' "${numbe...@]}"

It will print:

In this case "read" is not necessary. This would do the same:

#!/bin/bash
IFS=, numbers=( $(echo one,t w o,three) )
printf '<%s>\n' "${numbe...@]}"

If I understand the output of your "aptitude search awk" command correctly,
you have both installed. mawk would have been installed as part of any
installation. If you have gawk too, you must have installed a package
that has a dependency on gawk, directly or indirectly.

Sven wrote:
>
> Well, mawk has been of priority 'required' for a very long time, so I

You're right, Sven, I forgot to check the priority.

   aptitude install mawk_ gawk

would probably not work without some kind of override switches. It
wouldn't like the request to purge a required package.

The bottom line ...

Most awk scripts will run fine on a standard Debian system, since mawk
is a required package. If you can get by with mawk you probably should,
since mawk is reported to be more efficient than gawk. In a few cases,
an awk script may use features that are only supported in gawk, in which
case the package which contains it, if it is packaged properly, will
contain a dependency on gawk. If you are writing your own awk script
and you don't want to install gawk, make sure you don't use any features
that only work with gawk.

Sure is. It's in the bash man page. Look for IFS.

When in doubt, always try the man page.

On my system, if I try 'man read' I get "No manual entry for read.' Am I

Yes you are. Most programs come with a Manual (man ) page. so ,bash,
being a program comes with a manual page. To read the bash manual page
you enter the following command.

man bash

that brings up the bash man page and you can search through it for
whatever you need to. As read is a bash command, it should be mentioned
in the bash man page.

To learn how to use the man progran see the man manual(man) page.

Might be a good idea to install the debian-reference package to get even
more information how to do things in Debian.

It would not complain, I have just tested it successfully in a chroot.
The safer way, however, would be

aptitude install gawk && aptitude purge mawk

This avoids a time window where awk is not available. Note that you can
freely remove required packages that are not essential as long as the
dependencies are fulfilled. Apt will never automatically remove a
required package, though.

Yes, "read" is a Bash built-in command:

$ type read
read is a shell builtin

As you said, help for such commans are in the Bash man page but there is
also "help" command for built-ins:

$ help read

I was told by the supplier that the address involved is not to IP to the
internet but the router IP. This is fixed. They advised me to simply make it a
static IP and not exercise the DHCP.

I edited /etc/network/interfaces accordingly.

Seemed to work, but after the ADSL provider changed things around, the thing
no longer honors this choice. DHCP is being called despite and the lease
problem recurs. What, if at all, this should have to do with the new optical
cables laid under the street, I cannot guess. Maybe there is another place I
needed to edit?

Doing this using netcardconfig gives my hand edited entries as default choices
but the data is then blanked out in the interfaces file and ifup/ifdown do not
work correctly.

Since same laptop don't necessarily have the same chip set for wifi, it's

Debian way to compile your own version of a package

2010-02-14 Thread Matteo Riva
I would like to recompile Vim with a specific patch, and I'd like to
know what's the recommended way to do so in a Debian system. Should it
be kept separate - like in /usr/local - or should I create a .deb
package with a special version name and replace the official one?

Thanks.

HW Raid

2010-02-14 Thread Alex Samad
Hi

I am looking at buying a hardware raid controller, I have been an
advocate of software raid for quite a while, but having run into some
problems running a 10 disk home server, I figure its time to bit the
bullet and buy a good/nice card.

What I am looking at is the ability to monitor the array from within
linux, sort of like mdadm does, so that if/when a drive goes faulty I
will be notified. I would also like to be able to use smartctl on the
individual drives so I can gather information from them whilst linux is
running.

I have been looking at the Highpoint Rocket Raid 3530, this seems to
fit the build for me, but thats from reading the doco.

I was wondering has any one on the list been using these cards ? what is
the management software like and the monitoring

Thanks

Alex

No, I didn't. I did a normal install, have so far removed nothing and have
gawk.

You are right, and I stand corrected. For reasons that I cannot expleain,

What I have done when I needed something that wasn't available is to
compile and do the install with checkinstall. It builds a deb, and installs it
in
/usr/local/bin . It's NOT a Debian-approved deb, but does fine for strictly
local installations and can be removed with dpkg if needed. Checkinstall is
available in the repository for your flavour of Debian.

I owe you an apology. I had misread my own aptitude result. As Stephen
pointed out, since I have certainly not knowingly or deliberately installed
gawk, it must have got brought in as a dependancy of another package that I
_did_ install.

So - I apologise for the mail I have jus fired off to you. :-(

Hi

I have done quite a few installs on DL360, Dl785's, but all manual not
with pre seed. So I can tell you it works okay - the problem is with the
installer.

I'm not sure what you're asking. The kernel is just another package, as far
as the package management system is concerned. It is updated the same way
all packages are:

   aptitude update
   aptitude full-ugrade

This of course assumes that you have internet and security sources defined
in /etc/apt/sources.list. (And, for the stable release, the volatile
source as well.)

I'm running a much different hardware setup, but just in case some of the info
might be useful...

I'm running vanilla kernel.org 2.6.31.1 arch 686/i386 small mem smp with no
problems. I use LILO, no initrd, all my drivers built into the kernel,
netfilter, etc. It's a server, old 1994'ish Trident PCI VGA card text console
only, 1999 era 2 socket Abit BP6 i440BX SMP mobo, Sil3512PCI sata card, Intel
PIIX IDE for CD-ROM, PCI Intel Pro 100. Kernel installed the Debian way with
dpkg.

Pretty plain setup, except for the mobo. Although the 440BX is well known for
its universal compatibility and stability, the Abit BP6 is a Frankenstein board.
It's the only board ever to run dual Celerons--a hack never supported by Intel.
The kernel reads the mp table just fine and it works great.

Do you have any tips for creating custom (lean and mean) kernel .configs ?
(Just out of curiosity)

Also did you mean you used the make-kpkg command to build the kernel deb?

I am aware that in more recent vanilla kernels there is a deb-pkg option in the
Makefile to make linux-image debs.

I've gotten this error to in my endeavours too. I would be
interested in knowing if there is a solution. I have previously noticed there
were hacks to work around the problem by modifying the .mk files. But for the
meantime try using make deb-pkg since you are compiling such a recent kernel,
the option should be there in the Makefile.

It also assumes, I believe, that you're running a stock kernel. If you're
running a custom kernel compiled from source, I don't believe aptitude upgrades
will replace your kernel. They've never replaced my kernels anyway, including
distribution upgrades.

I just go through menuconfig and strip out all the junk I know I don't need.
I've not had to do that for a while as my .config seems to automatically when I
download, unzip, and build from a new source. I.e. all the junk I'd already
stripped out stays stripped out.

Yes, using these instructions:

I still do it the old way listed above. Works great for me.

Hi,

turn your apt sources.list to stable. Then remove xserver-xorg and then
install xserver-xorg. Then sources.list back to squeeze and all should
be well.

Godd bye and a nice day

I use 16 gram CO2 cartridges for emergency filling of bicycle tires. Saw a
gun designed to incorporate them into use on computers and bought it. It is
kind of week, short lived and expensive @ $2.5 each. Hadn't considered the
environmental aspect. But it is rare-use.

Also have a vacuum cleaner attachment for keyboards. It has 23 tubes, 3/16 x
4 inches, with tiny brushes on the ends. Looks like a strange sex toy.
Can't remember where I got it. Surprisingly, the silicon rubber tubes are
still very bendy.

Works really well but I don't know about components with the brushes.

What file(s) have you tried to edit? When?

Is it just /boot ? Or some other parts of the file system? What happens
when you need to insall / upgrade grub?
