En/La Omari Norman ha escrit, a 04/06/05 05:17:
| I have been having two problems getting sound to work on my system.
|
| The first problem involves only KDE apps. I can get sound in KDE,
| because I can get sounds from user actions such as maximizing windows,
| clicking on things, etc. However, I cannot play MP3s. Whenever I try
| to play an MP3 using a KDE application in KDE, I get a SIGABRT crash,
| with the crash text that is at the bottom of this message.
|
| This problem playing MP3s is limited to KDE apps. I can play MP3s fine
| inside GNOME using GNOME apps. I can also play MP3s fine if I am using
| X apps in KDE, or even if I am using a GNOME app inside KDE. But I
| cannot play MP3s on a KDE app in GNOME--the application won't even
| launch.
|
| KDE's problem with MP3s extends beyond trying to play MP3s. If I even
| click on an MP3 on my desktop, my whole screen turns black for a
| second, and then is restored to normal. If I open a Konqueror folder
| full of MP3s, I get a SIGABRT. This happens even if I do not attempt
| to open any of the files in the Konqueror window.
|
| My other problem extends to both KDE and GNOME: my master volume
| slider has no effect on my volume. If I open the mixer and adjust the
| individual components, that works fine. But the master volume has no
| effect whatsoever.
|
| So far, here is what I have tried:
| * using OSS drivers and Alsa drivers
| * using sound servers, such as jackd and esd
| * turning the built-in sound system in the KDE control panel off and on
|
| None of these changes have had any effect.
|
| My setup: Debian 3.1 (testing Sarge); KDE 3.3.2; Intel AC97 i810
| integrated PCI sound.
|
| Thanks for any help.
| Omari

Hi Omari,
1. Are you using alsa? If not you might want to install it.
2. In KDE go to Kcontrol -> Sound & Multimedia -> Sound System ->
Hardware. What is your audio device set to?
Cheers,
Jonathan

Try: modprobe r128

I don't think you need to add the .ko extension.
(I could be wrong in this case but I have never loaded a module using
its name+extenstion, maybe both methods work, someone on the list will

Don't worry about the warning, the warning should serve to remind you
to first backup the file you are about to edit.

If you are at a point in your learning where you cannot comfortably
backup a file with cp, restore it with mv, then no, do not attempt
editing the file.

Learn the basic copy, and move procedures before
anything else as linux is all about text files, and the more
comfortable you are with manipulating text files, the easier things
like this will be for you.

Once you get this working, you will learn to hang onto these files,
keep a backup copy of the XF8config to use if you ever reinstall.

Does anyone know of a fix for this?

Compag Proliant 370

2005-06-04 Thread Brent Clark

Hi list

I just have become in possession of an old Compag Proliant 370 (still
need to figure out what im going to do with it -maybe a nice mailserver).

The machine obviously came with Winblows 2000 Server on and I have now
just installed debian.

The problem I am having is, when windows was installed the machine would
slow the fans down etc
but now that I have debian installed (kernel 2.6.11) the fan are just
blowing continuously (sound like an aeroplane getting ready to take off
- LOL)

I thought it was a acpi issue, but I cant seem to get this right.

If anyone has and tips / solution etc it would be great fully
appreciated

Kind Regards

x-window-system is just a metapackage (a bunch of dependencies) that can be
removed without any worries.

It's a Mozilla problem. Xprint is an initiative that spawned from the Mozilla
project. It's basically a translator that converts the X protocol to
Postscript. Also, it's pretty telling that the version in Debian is
0.1.0.alpha1-10, with no corresponding release being offered by the project
itself. It might get better with a transition to X.org which Xprint seems to
have become a part of.

clues :
- check permissions : ls -l /dev/usb/lp0 , i had a report of it being
root.root instead of root.lp (though i guess the user system was
experimental)

- do you have hpijs and foomatic-filters-ppds installed ?

- you should reconfigure your printer queue to use the "hp cups backend"
driver . using gnome-cups-manager or http://localhost:631 choose hp:/...
instead of usb:/... at the first stage of the configuration (you can have
muliple print queue for the same printer : keeping your usb:// configured
one and configure a new one to use hp://).
This give access to more verbose error reports.

Alos check /var/log/cups (and if needed up the log level in
/etc/cups/cupsd.conf)

Cheers

I was hoping for a way of avoiding doing this. Especially as it is nice to
have 'rescue' disc capability as a back up option. I was assuming someone
might have created a custom set of debian boot images for testing ?

Actually, I used both. modprobe r128 just returned the cursor but I
couldn't find r128
with lsmod. Today, lsmod shows its there. I guess I could have
overlooked it as
the list is long. Also read the link you provided and came to

apply to my video card. Doesn't seem to hurt anything though and I know
that is was

I'm ok here and have done it. Actually I created a backup of it in past

something I did with wajig may have rm it. Just started using wajig and
may have

done something wrong.

To: All, After modifying XF86Config-4 and rebooting, I still seem to
have only 2 resolution using
cntrl-alt-++ but the screen looks to have a finer grain like the
1024x786 resolution. Is there a way to
explicitly tell what screen resolution is running? I should know how,
but not on Debian.

you can use xdpyinfo from a terminal.

xdpyinfo | grep dimensions

 dimensions:1920x1200 pixels (524x331 millimeters)

This helps as I thought I may have the 1028x786 resolution after
rebooting but the

results still shows:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ xdpyinfo | grep dimensions
 dimensions:800x600 pixels (282x212 millimeters)
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$
Now, I'm really at a lost. I changed my XF86Config-4 as follows before
rebooting:

SubSection "Display"
   Depth 24
   Modes "1028x786" "800x600" "640x480"
   EndSubSection
Hope there are more suggestions to follow and thanks for the command to read

Re: Two sound problems (debian: addressed to exclusive sender for this address)

2005-06-04 Thread Omari Norman
Hi Jonathan,

Currently I am using alsa. It works well for me in GNOME. However,
whether I use alsa or OSS makes no difference in KDE; MP3s don't work
either way.

In Sound System -> Hardware, these settings make no difference for
MP3s. I set it up to Advanced Linux Sound Architecture, and any KDE
app I try to use to play an MP3 still crashes. This happens regardless
of whether I toggle "Enable the sound system" ON or OFF. However, if I
do enable the sound system and set it to alsa, the "test sound" button
works fine. (The test MIDI button does not play anything.)

Well you need to find the correct module to load, google for the exact
model of your card. At this point I would also look at the logs.

/var/log/XFree86.0.log will contain lots of information about what
fails to load, what will load but with warnings and hopefully
something about why it wont do 1024x786.

You also don't need to reboot the computer each time,
ctrl+alt+backspace will kill the xserver for you and you can make some
changes and try again.

Why are you using less? That's for interactive use; it's even worse
than cat. Just use the filename as an argument to grep:

hostlist=`grep -v "#" /usr/local/src/client_hosts.txt | cut -d "," -f1`

   Or:

hostlist=`awk '!/#/ {print $1}' /usr/local/src/client_hosts.txt`

Why did you include this function? You don't use it in your
example, but you use cleanup, and didn't include that.

> function errhandler()

   Why?

Why not just check that each command completes successfully?

If you don't want to exit on all errors, why install a trap that
   does?

Alsa not working after reboot

2005-06-04 Thread cothrige
Having been a fairly long-time Slackware user, since 8.1, and being
somewhat unhappy with some compatibility problems with Gnome apps and
that distro, I decided to see if Debian would work for me. I don't
have high-speed internet access and so used a work computer which I
have access to periodically to download and burn the first two discs
of Testing. This seemed a solid place to start and I was confident
that two discs would get a working system up.

I was not surprised to find that basically I was right, though
surprised at some of what was left off of these two discs, eg. alsa, X
headers and libraries, emacs, etc. But, overall, things went well and
after tinkering about with the installation I soon got a working
system with the basics in place.

After downloading and installing the alsa-1.0.8 packages I ran
alsaconf and had the sound up and running. However, I discovered
later that if I rebooted the sound never reloaded and I had to run
alsaconf again. This had happened to me some time back with Slack 9.1
and I managed after some work to get it going, but I cannot really
recall how. I fear that with Debian I am unsure of where to start.
The modules.conf file is a bit of a shocker for me as it is nothing
like that of Slackware, and has a great deal more going on. I cannot
really tell if it has what I need in it at all. The
/etc/modprobe.d/sound file, which I am not familiar with at all, is
there and has a reference to my card, es1688. Other than that I
haven't a clue what it does and cannot be sure what it should have in
it.

I have noticed that at the end of the boot process a brief reference
to alsa is seen, and something along the lines of "no modules loaded."
And in fact nothing is. An lsmod shows nothing related to snd at all,
and there is no mixer to adjust. So my situation is not a muted card
or pcm but in fact a total absence of sound. Only running alsaconf
again with each boot will make sound usable. I have tried a number of
google searches only to find numerous muted cards and loaded modules
without sound, but can't seem to locate any with no modules being
loaded at all. Is there a step or action after alsaconf which will
make this permament and reload the modules with each boot? Am I
forgetting or overlooking something stupidly obvious?

You can view, and adjust resolutions, with xvidtune.

xdpyinfo (1x)- display information utility for X

I would also suggest you try a lower color depth, such as 16, to see
if that works better. I forgot to mention that in the last post.
I default to 16 here.

Re: Are /var/cache/apt/archive files essential?

2005-06-04 Thread Marc Shapiro

Maurits van Rees <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

From the apt-get manual page:

   clean

   autoclean

So call 'apt-get autoclean' to remove most of your packages or
'apt-get clean' to remove them all. It doesn't hurt. You just need to
fetch those files again when you have to reinstall for some reason.

Note though that having an older version of a package lying around in
the apt cache can be useful when you discover a bug in the new version
and want to revert to the old.

To have more control, cobble together some shell commands. For example
see this posting by me:

http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2004/10/msg01671.html

I have never been happy with the 'clean' and 'autoclean' options for
apt-get. I don't want to remove the files for packages that I currently
have installed. I just want to remove the old stuff. I have yet to
find anything that will do this for me. That is why my /var partition
also fills up until something stops working and I manually go through
the directory and start deleting big files. Well, I recently got tired
of that (it is tedius and inefficient) so I wrote a python script to
automate a lot of it. (If I had had Maurits' scripts I probably would
have been hapy with that, but now I have my own.)

The scripts looks through /var/cache/apt/archives and the output of
'dpkg -l'. It then displays some statistics about the archive, i.e.

Total installed packages
Total uninstalled packages in archive
Total packages in archive
Total files in archive
Packages in archive w/dups
Files in archive in dup pkgs

The following prompts will then be presented (taken from the program's
help screen):

Delete uninstalled packages from archive (y/N/p/q)?
y = Delete all uninstalled package files from the archives
   without prompting.
N = Do not delete any package files based on installation status.
p = Prompt to keep each uninstalled package file in the archive.
q = Quit program without deleting anything.

If prompting was requested:

Keep: filename.deb (Y/n/q) ?
Y = Keep the package file in the archives (do not delete).
n = Delete the package file from the archives.
q = Quit program without deleting the package file.

For each package with multiple files in the archive a list of each file
will be presented. The list is presented in the system sort order and
an asterisk (*) is displayed before the file with the most recent date.

For the last package shown the following prompt will be presented.

Keep only filename.deb (y/N/d/q) ?
y = Keep the listed package file (deleting all others for
   the specified package).
N = Prompt to keep each package file.
d = Keep only the most recent file (as indicated with an asterisk).
q = Quit program without deleting the package file.

If prompting for package deletion was requested:

Keep: filename.deb (Y/n/q) ?
Y = Keep the package in the archives (do not delete).
n = Delete the package from the archives.
q = Quit program without deleting the package.

NOTE: All responses are case insensitive and require only
a single character. Defaults are shown in uppercase.

Taking all defaults WILL NOT DELETE ANYTHING!

---

So far, everything seems to work as expected. I have used this on both
of my boxes, one is running Sarge (w/ Python 2.3) and the other is
running Woody (w/ Python 2.1). There is extra code in the script to
handle the older 'ls' from Woody which does not have an option to
display the date in a sortable fashion, so this should work on older
systems, as well as newer ones. Just the option to remove packages not
listed as installed by dpkg removed 117 files on my Sarge box. All in
all I have used it to free up nearly 300MB of space (the archives now
take up about 492MB. Since I have 1GB in /var that is almost a third of
my available space freed up.

If anyone is interested in trying this out, drop me an e-mail and I will
send it out to you. I would appreciate any comments, or feedback.

Now you probably have two symlinks pointing at each other.

Thanks very much for the info about the backward symlink and mknod which I've

IIRC I read 2 or 3 weeks ago on d-d, that this is not the case. As the
buildds keeps installed dependencies for performance reason and can't be

Running a journaling filesystem does *not* guarantee that data won't get
corrupted. If /var is well and truly hosed, you either need to reformat

Check the output of mount; is the filesystem read-only? Check lsattr for
append and immutable flags. Chech getfacl, if your filesystem supports
ACLs.

If none of the obvious things turn up, I'd suspect a compromise.

You could put it in /home/java, and then symlink it to /usr/share/java,
if you feel that's necessary. If you run ext2/3 on your home partition,
you *could* resize it, I suppose, but I don't know that I'd really
recommend it.

Remember, in the *nix world, you can put *almost* anything pretty much
anywhere. In particular, your PATH statement and the occasional symlink
are your friends.

I haven't used it myself, but you can take a look at debsigs, and see if
it does what you want. Of course, not all packages in the repository
have signatures, which is why I think it may of limited value.

You're going about this backwards, I think. Run ion inside a vncserver,
and all your workspaces will be accessible, provided that ALT-[1-9]

xvnc4viewer supports the version 4.x protocols, including ZRLE encoding
which is supposedly on-par with tight encoding, although the tight
encoder supports more tweakable options such as JPG compression levels.

Stick with ZRLE and xvnc4viewer unless you rely heavily on tightvnc for
some reason. Both do a good job, but the RealVNC stuff can reasonably be
considered more mainline than tightvnc, ultravnc, tridiavnc, et. al.

All of them, of course, support the 3.x encodings of the xvncviewer in
Sarge, so aside from performance issues, it's a matter of religious
conviction.

Hi,

Can someone help me please.

I would very much like to mirror www.debian.org on my private PC for

I also find the explanation for restricting mirrors at

S.A. we're still mostly on dial-up, being able to get a large site on CD or
DVD or downloading it at a friends place is a big help.

I would also like to know if it is possible to get the site, or part there of,

Thats how I started mirroring http://tldp.org and have found it to be a big

Thanks.

How can I share a mailbox between multiple OSes

2005-06-04 Thread David Witbrodt
This is a newbie question.  I just installed Debian and several other OSes onto my old machine.  As I have been reading the docs, and have started configuring things to my liking, I found myself wondering whether an email application exists that would allow me to store my mailbox files on a common data partition, which could be then used by whatever OS was currently running.

I get my email via POP3 from my ISP, so I was thinking that there might be a single program that has been ported to all of the OSes, making it possible to use a common mailbox from each platform.

Anyone out there doing this?  Is is even possible?  Seems to me like it should be, but I've never faced this scenario before, so I'm facing a steep learning curve...

Well, it could be a lot of things... what error msgs do you get and if
none, then what msgs are in your syslog right after the pon fails? you
could try this..

open terminal and issue (as root) tail -f /var/log/syslog
open another terminal and issue you pon command
watch the output in the syslog screen to see what is happening

good luck..

What is pon? What package does it belong to? Most people use wvdial,

I'm guessing you are relatively new to linux?? pon and poff are part

pon to make connection
poff to end it..

How about a common /home partition they would all mount? You'll have
to pick a filesystem they can all read+write, and you'll have to synch
UIDs and GIDs.

You could use mutt with a common Maildir, but I wouldn't recommend that.
What you *really* want is to set up an IMAP server on the host where
your mails are stored. IMAP is similar to POP, but all the mails are
stored on the server and mailclients handle them as if they were stored
locally. Almost all current mailclients know IMAP and your problem is
solved.

For easy setup and maintenance I recommend dovecot. Just install it,
edit a few lines in /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf and point your mail
clients to it. Finished. It is really easy.

If several people have access to this mailbox, I suggest creating a
special user for these shared mails since in its default configuration,
dovecot uses standard user credentials which probably also give shell
access to the system running dovecot. Alternatively, you can also use a
MySQL or PostgreSQL database for user authentication.

I doubt this is really as helpful as I want it to be, but I highly
recommend using IMAP mailboxes rather than local mail for just this
reason. With IMAP you can check and sort your mail using any number
of computers, mail clients, or a web interface, and since the mail is
actually on the server, a change in any client is reflected in any other
client.

Does your ISP support IMAP at all? If so maybe look into using
that rather than POP3, or if not maybe look into an email provider that
does.

If IMAP won't work at all, you might be able to use Mozilla Thunderbird
with a common profile directory shared between all the OSs. I believe
there are command line options to set the profile directory, though I am
not familiar with them. The common directory would have to be on a
filesystem that all the OSs can read and write. If you're using Windows
that would pretty much limit you to using FAT32 or trying one of the
methods to read/write ext2/3 in Windows.

I have found a solution to this problem:

http://www.uwsg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0211.1/0994.html

It says "in some implementations the codec control labeled PCM2 is
actually main volume." So it is with my system. The GNOME master
volume slider lets you assign that slider to whatever sound output you
want, so I will change that to PCM2...

I love crappy hardware...I can't find a solution to my other problem
with the inability to play MP3s in KDE (a problem which has also
existed for me with other distros--KNOPPIX and Mandriva, which isn't
even Debian based) but maybe my hardware is just screwed up.

Hi Roberto,
I read it and it seems great! Haven't had a change to build anything yet
but I'm sure it will help me when I do. a minor typo, search for
'since'. As someone commented, I believe pbuilder does not clean the
chroot. for slow archs like arm and m68k, it would be inefficient to
rebuild all the dependencies for building KDE on arm after every change,
as an example. And I dont think someone making a personal packages
would want to waste the time to clean it. Keep up the great work,
you'll be a DD before Etch (at least I hope so) is released!

It won't provide you with any additional security though, so it will
only give a false sense of security. If you can run pbuilder with any
argument, you can specify an arbitrary configfile, and that way have any
arbitrary command run as root. Even if it's only in the chroot, which I
didn't check right now, as root in a chroot you can break out and be
root on the host system.

Eep, please don't tell people to give themselves full privileges with sudo
unless they know what they're doing. The sudo configuration here is just
to run pbuilder, right? If so, just recommend something like:

bob ALL = NOPASSWD: /usr/sbin/pbuilder
bob ALL = NOPASSWD: /usr/lib/pbuilder/pbuilder-satisfydepends

This is sufficient in my experience.

Also, note that your sample pbuilder script looks like it was miswrapped;
the script is showing up on the same line as the #!/bin/sh line.

pbuilder does always clean the chroot. buildd doesn't always, but it does
try to do so (it just doesn't care if it fails).

The build logs seem to indicate that buildd is generally being that

Brent,
Compaq Proliant servers fans are generally controlled by the Compaq

Thanks for the feedback. Someone cleared it up for me in IRC in
#debian-devel. I have updated the HOWTO.

As far as for building personal packages, you are right. But, as the
default pbuilder behavior is to wipe out the temporary chroot after
every session, that should work for most people. I haven't read far
enough into the docs to find out how to get it preserve the installed
packages, but that is because I like being able to build in a clean
environment every time and don't have an inclination to change it. But,
your point is taken.

OK. Thanks. Updated:

"The official Debian packages are built by a buildd, also called build
daemon, which make use of sbuild (a package similar in function to
pbuilder) to ensure that every package is built in a clean environment

Hm, yes, good point. I would still argue for listing the specific
commands just for general sudo sanity, but the NOPASSWD is probably a bad
idea. I hadn't thought that all the way through.

Given that, it's worth a big note on the page that configuring things this
way gives that account full root access, meaning that if someone breaks
into it, they also have root. That may not be obvious to someone who
hasn't done this before.

I think i need to explain my setup a bit more...

I currently login to my linux box which is is running metacity. I then start
x2vnc which connects my currently logged in X11 session to my windows
box. I have a tightvnc server listening on my windows box, that way I
can connect my currently logged in X session on my linux box to the
actual logged in windows session which I can view on my second monitor
with one keyboard and mouse.
This works great with metacity, but I would like to switch to ion. But
when I go to create a second workspace with "alt-f9", and I switch to
that second workspace, I can no longer move my mouse off of the side
of the screen to my windows box when I am in that second workspace. I
have to switch back to the first workspace where I started the x2vnc
session to get back to my windows box again. I do not know if these
workspaces are totally independent of one another and I cannot share
the x2vnc programs forwarding capability, or if there is just a
configuration variable I need to change that I am not aware about. I
do not know if this is the same thing as switching between my 4
virtual terminals in my gnome session or not, when I create another
workspace, because I can use one x2vnc session over all 4 virtual
terminals in metacity, but not on different workspaces in ion. This is
what I am trying to figure out how to fix.
Hope this helps.

Last time I did anything like this was when I was moving from one distro

symlinked /var/spool/mail across partitions.

This way, there was only one mailbox.

mutt + dovecot/squirrelmail + mbox ?

2005-06-04 Thread Monique Y. Mudama
So I finally bit the bullet and installed IMAP so that I could use one
of the non-openwebmail webmails. Squirrelmail's docs make a big point
of how if you're running mbox and don't make sure the locking
mechanisms are well-coordinated, you run a risk of turning your
mailboxes into hamburger.

How do I find out if mutt and dovecot see eye-to-eye on locking
mechanisms?

I've heard lots about how dangerous mbox is and how I should probably
not even be using it, but I've been using mbox for an awfully long
time now, and I have a feeling that converting my system would be
non-trivial. Or at least annoying. While I understand that maildir
allows you to isolate corruption to single messages instead of the
entire mailbox, I guess corruption just seems so unlikely that I
haven't worried about it. I'm sure it will bite me soon.

For similar reasons, I installed courier-imap and squirrelmail. Courier
uses maildir instead of mbox, and maildir does not require locking. I've
been looking into moving my old mail (in mboxes) over to maildirs. I've
installed mb2md and it seems to do a good job of converting mbox files to
maildirs.

I can use mutt directly on the maildirs with no difficulty. I generally use
mutt to connect via IMAP, though. I have the folders variable set to the
IMAP URL and mailboxes set to = and a couple others. It works nicely.

I haven't tried dovecot, but I like Courier. My wife has been connecting to
it with Mozilla mail, Thunderbird, and MacOS X's Mail.app for a couple of
years. I'm just migrating to it, but it's been working nicely for me.

Before you try more drastic changes (like installing a new kernel -- see
below), can you try running "depmod" as root?

If you have problems trying to insert the module after that, then, please
report back.

The problem loading the ip_conntrack module you are seeing is
quite possibly due to a mismatch between the installations of the kernel
that you had.

Another possibility would be to install another completely different
version of the kernel (like, say, 2.6.11, which has many improvements over
2.6.8, BTW).

Hope this helps, Rogério.

P.S.: I don't use the kernels provided by Debian -- I don't like having my
system using initrd's which is, AFAIK, what distributions' packaged kernels
tend to use.
