grip+cdparanoia: hdc: packet command error: error=0x54
Hi, I'm a newbie at ripping audio CDs. I'm having a problem with grip and cdparanoia that seems related to the way grip (and only grip) invokes cdparanoia and it's interactions with my DVD-ROM drive. Any help is appreciated. kernel 2.4.18-k7 on an up to date Woody system. /dev/hdc is a Sony DDU 1621E DVD ROM drive ii grip 2.98.7-1 GNOME-based CD-player/ripper/encoder ii cdparanoia 3a9.8-6An audio extraction tool for sampling CDs. ii jack 2.99.7-5 Rip and encode CDs with one command ii abcde 2.0.3-1A Better CD Encoder When I run grip with the external cdparanoia ripper (actually, with just about any ripper I'm allowed to choose in the config panel) grip skips tracks it rips seemingly at random, and is generally unreliable. It's nearly impossible to rip a whole CD without missing some tracks. Here's the only error message I see, it shows up in /var/log/messages *sometimes* when grip starts ripping and skipping tracks: Apr 29 19:55:06 rattler kernel: hdc: irq timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy } Apr 29 19:55:06 rattler kernel: hdc: DMA disabled Apr 29 19:55:06 rattler kernel: hdc: ATAPI reset complete Apr 29 19:55:18 rattler kernel: hdc: packet command error: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } Apr 29 19:55:18 rattler kernel: hdc: packet command error: error=0x54 Apr 29 19:55:18 rattler kernel: ATAPI device hdc: Apr 29 19:55:18 rattler kernel: Error: Illegal request -- (Sense key=0x05) Apr 29 19:55:18 rattler kernel: Illegal mode for this track or incompatible medium -- (asc=0x64, ascq=0x00) Apr 29 19:55:18 rattler kernel: The failed "Read CD" packet command was: Apr 29 19:55:18 rattler kernel: "be 04 00 00 4c dc 00 00 01 f8 00 00 " Of course, DMA has been turned off for /dev/hdc after this. It seems to be just a Grip thing. If I use jack (which I really like) or abcde the ripping runs fine with cdparanoia, with DMA turned on. I find that if I use Grip the cdparanoia process uses a span argument like this: "cdparanoia -d /dev/cdrom 04:[.0]-04:[.17752] /home/shyamal/music/the_beatles/magical_mystery_tour/blue_jay_way.wav" As I discovered, grip uses "-d %*c %t:[.%s]-%t:[.%e] %*w" as the cdparanoia command line. Jack, bless his little hard, uses cdparanoia like this: "cdparanoia --abort-on-skip -d /dev/cdrom 7 track_07.wav" and everything works like a dream and it always works flawlessly. I tried chaning the configuration for grip to use the same command line "--abort-on-skip -d %*c %t %*w" but it did not help. I still get skipped tracks, and the hdc errors on occasion. One more thing I see that disturbs me is that when I insert a CD into the drive I see a lot (really a lot, a dozen or more at a time) of this in dmesg: VFS: Disk change detected on device ide1(22,0) Could some one clue me into what's going on? Why is the span argument used by grip cause to my drive to lose it? Or is there something more fundamental that is the problem? Cheers! I am unable to install Debian Linux 2.2. The system recognizes the CD, proceeds to installation of the operating system and then decides that the CD cannot be mounted despite the fact that it has already been using it. Merging ps files
Hi, I'd like to merge some ps files into one. Well, actually, if I could do the same thing of pdf files, that would be better. I have tried using the psmerge; but it seems that it works only on ps files without images in it. Is there any simple tool that can do just that...? BTW, ps2pdf seems to "compress" the images included in the ps files using "heavy compress" option on jpeg compression, so that the images look blurred. Is there any way to improve this? That sort of thing happens no matter when you time it. Not necessarily. Projects like KDE tend to have reasonably predictable releases, and their release estimates are usually accurate. So, it wouldn't be too tough to aim for a release date that would encompass the latest releases of most of the major projects. For example, a Debian release targeted for June/July could include XF86 4.2, KDE 3, Gnome 2, and Mozilla 1.0. That would be a great release. The real problem for Debian would be to actually hit a target release date, since the project tends to drag its feet. > > By the time it's finally released, it'll already be obsolete, and will > > remain that way for ~2 years until the next release. > > Well, then, the answer is to help make the next release faster. That's not so easy to do. When I've gone through the RC bug lists for Woody, it seemed as though a large majority of the bugs were for non-i386 archs, to which I have no access. And many of the other bugs were so trivial to fix that submitting a patch to the BTS wouldn't even be useful; the maintainer just needed to get around to fixing it, or another dev needed to make an NMU. -- Brian Nelson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". I'm not sure why the terminal crashes, but it ain't limited to gnome-terminal. I expect it has something to do with bash handling write/close errors on the FIFO which might generate an unhandled signal (SIGPIPE, for instance). Re: Unidentified subject!
Keith, The problem you have is real, and unfortunate. I'm not sure this is the reason, but I've found that upgrading to a new kernel means you have to add modules for the same functionality as before. Whereas certain modules were compiled in the earlier kernel, the new kernel is more modular. In the long run, we'll all benefit from the modular approach. In the short term it's a problem. On the otherhand unless you have a compelling need for a newer kernel stick with what works. -- Sincerely, David Smead http://www.amplepower.com. A truly new person would have just said, "I didn't Keith> get this trouble from Windows!" Well, a truly new person can't go from Windows 95 to Windows 2000 with a single apt-get command either! That's not really a fair comparison. There's a reason going from Potato to Woody with 'apt-get upate && apt-get -f dist-upgrade" does not upgrade your kernel. I have not owned a SCSI Linux system in 5 years so I'm handicapped here anyway, but you need to provide us with *much* more information. If you collected the kind of information most readers want, I'm guessing you'd likely end up solving your problem by yourself anyway :-) Do you have a real SCSI device? Or are you using IDE SCSI emulation? If you do have a real SCSI device, what is the SCSI controller? (Look in dmesg output under 2.2.20 for this vital bit of information). Okay, so you know your SCSI controller. I'd bet that driver is built as a module in 2.4.16 (my 2.4.18 kernel is like that). Look in /lib/modules/2.4.16-k7/kernel/drivers/scsi/ for a matching module file. Do a 'modprobe driver' (less the .o) and see if things work. If it does, add that module name to /etc/modules so it works automagically the next time you boot. If this is the wrong track I'm leading you down, at least tell us more about your machine and what exactly is happening. I really don't want to be patronizing (honestly), but saying that "you played around for a little while but could not get it to work" makes is very hard for people to help you out. Apologies if I'm way off, but hey, I've got next to nothing to work with! Cheers! Shyamal -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Strange timing- I had just run "make uninstall" in my kdelibs source dir when my mail client notified me and I thought to check. The file dcopidl is indeed there- I guess it didn't install properly as I had run a find in /opt and it didn't turn up. Anyway, after reading your message I decided to instlall the kdelibs I had downloaded from http://www.unc.edu/~crimsun/kde3-unofficial/ The main reason I wanted to compile (besides the fun of course !) is that installing the kdebase deb from the above site (WhizNDR) would have removed kde2's kdebase and I want them both intact. (I haven't been using Debian for long enough to know the proper way to do this with dpkg or apt) So, anyway, the kdelibs deb installed fine, and now ./configure for kdebase finished with success. Its compiling now. Many thanks, Robert_L -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Well, I know of a simplistic form/dialog interface library that is used in GRASS (sure there are better examples around). It's fairly small and pretty well commented. It's not exactly event driven with callbacks and such (either the user "submits" or "cancels" the whole page). There is an O'Reilly book on curses. You could start there. Because ncurses apps really do not have an event loop, I do not expect them to be event driven like GUI apps usually are. You're learning C and ypu started with a curses/forms app? Curses (and esp the SysV form stuff) is getting to be pretty arcane stuff these days. There are a few people that know it well, but not too many. There's a CD ripper front-end named mp3c that has a pretty nice ncurses UI (but I don't think it uses the forms library). Well, I'd say FIFO's are on-topic since they reside in the filesystem. Some things to remember about FIFO's: 1. FIFO's must be opened for reading or writing only. 2. The open call for reading or writing a FIFO blocks if there is no corresponding writer or reader, unless O_NONBLOCK is used. 3. The read call will block if there is no data to read, or until the writer closes. If there is no writer, it returns immediately. 4. Attempts to write to a pipe that isn't open for reading will generate a SIGPIPE signal (an unhandled SIGPIPE will terminate the process). Number 4 is the likely cause of the crashing shell since the reader terminates while the writer is trying to do its thing. Since the actions aren't being run from a script, the shell itself isn't protected from the signal (and apparently isn't handling it). In a script, the script would just terminate. This SIGPIPE behavior is stupid, but that's the standard... The semantics of local sockets are generally easier to work with, IMHO. -- Eric G. The . is not special; it is just a dot. find also supports a -regex expression, which does match regexes, in which case the leading '*' is nonstandard at best -- my guess is that since it isn't following another token as a quantifier it would match only a literal '*', which is probably not what you want. good times, Vineet -- Currently seeking opportunities in the SF Bay Area Please see http://www.doorstop.net/resume.shtml pgp9p86aa7ujt.pgp Description: PGP signature

And of course, there's plenty of good reasons people will trust it: only your friends will be using it, they trust you, and you tell them it's cool =) The real main issue here is that the major clients in use today usually give warnings when using a certificate not signed by a "trusted" political partner^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H certificate authority like Veri$ign. > Don't ask me how, 'cause I don't know, except for that there is a tool > that comes with java that will generate certificates. EXT3 questions
Hi, I'm experiencing with ext3 it appears I have some questions that maybe anyone of you can answer: - Is it possible to use ext3 for the root partition with the stock debian kernel? My ext3 roots work nicely with a hand made kernel but the stock Debian one just mounts the partition ext2. Isn't that what the initrd.img is for? - I added ext3 to several partitions. All seem to work nicely. And on all execpt one the journal seems to be hidden. That is a ls -a does not show a .journal file. But on one partition an ls -a shows a file .journal. However, this partition also was mounted as EXT3 and everything seems to work nicely. Any idea why .journal is not moved away? Yes, I did run e2fsck on all of them. BTW all systems in question are woody. Thanks in advance for any hints. Michael P.S.: Please CC me on replies. -- Michael Meskes Michael@Fam-Meskes.De Go SF 49ers! Go Rhein Fire! Exim file permission problem perhaps
Hello, I have been having some problems with emails and exim on a Woody system. When I look at the ...exim/mainlog I see messages:- failed to open database lock file /var/spool/exim/db/wait-remote_smtp.lockfile: Permission denied (euid=8 egid=8) I looked at the /var/spool/exim/db/ directory, and saw that the files wait-remote_smtp.lockfile and wait-remote_smtp were owner and group root. When I compare them with another system that is not giving problems I see that these files are user and group mail. AKAIK I have not changed the owner of these files myself in the past. I have now changed them to mail:mail on the suspect system, and am waiting to see if problems change. Can anyone say who should own these files, and suggest which package has given them the wrong owners (if they were wrong)? I thought as much. I used ssl for putting together an installation of apache-ssl before. But there is a comment in the courier-imap that says you have to get a Certified one. I thought this was the reason -- commercial applications are not programmed to readily accept these certs. My biggest problem now is that the imap installation and qmail are having a fight. I am unable, through mozilla, to delete (move to trash) email or create new folders. I'm a little hesitant to dive into it much right now since it fried my mozilla installation and I had to do it all over again. But first, I really should install something like pine to attempt to isolate the problems/interactions between qmail/imap/mozilla. I am looking for suggestions on what imap daemon might be best. I don't need much. ssl would be very nice, but not required. My biggest concerns are security (always) and qmail (~/Maildir) compatability. An alternative to Maildir would be to pipe everything from qmail into procmail as someone suggested. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Installation problem
I'm trying to install Potato (2.2r3) on PC with 386/387, 16MB, 2GB SCSI IBM, Advansys SCSI, ATAPI CDROM and NE2000 compatibile. Does this make any sense? Would that configuration be usable for anything? Any suggestions? I run SCO on such configuration years ago. Problem is: I have Debian on CDROM but I can't boot from CDROM. I made rescue and root disc and 4 or 5 driver discs. (I also tried with compact which have one driver disc - it should also support advansys controller) After beginning of instalation I am ofered to load modules from disc, I supply driver disc but inst. program says - cannot mount floppy. After that I cannot do disk partitioning because advansys is not recognized. Re: 2.4.18 - No SCSI subsystem
[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: >-snip-< The solution was to place aha152x in the /etc/modules file. Now, what I do not understand is why that line was not required in /etc/modules for it to be recognised under 2.2.20, but was needed in 2.4.18. My problem is no longer the machine not working, but me not understanding. Can someone explain the variable treatment of /etc/modules between 2.2.20 and 2.4.18? Check out the config file for your 2.2.20 kernel. I will bet you will find the aha152x driver compiled into the kernel rather than as a module. I am not 100% certain of this, so you will have to check, but you would NOT be able to use it unless it is loaded somewhere. An alternative would be to checkout your /etc/modules.conf file and see if it is being loaded as a module there. A third possibility is that you are using an initrd image with the 2.2.20 kernel and it is being loaded there. One of these three should answer your question. The same things work for the 2.4.X kernels. You probably got a kernel image that wasn't setup to support the aha152x card "out of the box". The same thing "could" have happened on your 2.2.20 kernel... you just got lucky the packager thought support for it was important! Aha, you are right. I was confusing what I have to do with the args to grep with what I have to do with the arg for find -name. eg, find . -name xxx -exec grep heres\.a\.literal\.dot {} \; -print Thanks. -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] Welcome to the GNU age! http://www.gnu.org -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". AW: debian + sedlbauer + hylafax: can not receive faxes
Als nächstes solltest du zum Test die MSN weglassen: anstatt ModemResetCmds:"AT&E13S0=1S13=1+FCLASS=1" # stuff to do when sollte er das versuchen: ModemResetCmds: "AT&E0" # stuff to do when normal sollte es dann funktionieren ! Thanks. this depnds, in what style what you are used to code in asm. if you want a cross-plattform macro assembler with intel style notation, try installing 'nasm'. for converting existing code to GNU assembler, install and use 'intel2gas'. this is probably what you want, if you have an ms-doggy-dos background. if you're new and want to follow the GNUies with it's SYSV/un*x style notation, 'as' (aka gas) is probably for you. try the standard binutils package which it's included. it's used a lot under unices. for assembling 8086 code, install bin86. it's required for e.g. translate LILO with it's 8086 boot loader code (BIOS 16bit limitations). every major editor, like vim and emacs) comes hooks and modes for your codings. probably there's also a nice IDE included in debian, but i can't remember the name. anyone? poweroff wont poweroff
shutdown -h now switches to runlevel 0 and performs an orderly shutdown ending with the message power down. That other operating? system can turn the computer off. The difference was never important to me until I installed a ups. Previously I never left the computer unattended so I was always present to turn the computer off. Now the ups software can properly initiate the debian shutdown so I can leave the computer unattended with no risk of losing data in the event of a power failure but the computer will continue to draw power until the battery runs down. (I connect nothing but the computer to the battery support - not even the monitor. Once the power failure shutdown has been tested I don't need to see what's happening.) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? I'm going though the gs docs in /usr/share/doc/gs/Use.htm to see if I can figure this out. I was wondering if you could share your printcap? You can email it to me directly if you like. It looks like I'm going to have to muck around with files in /usr/share/ghostscript/common/ also, is that correct? Thanks, kent -- To know the truth is to distort the Universe. Alfred N.
