Perhaps I'm wrong but it sounds to me like you might be
misunderstanding what Linux is. Linux is not an application but a
full fledged operating system which can take the place of Win95 or
Win3.1 . You therefore do not install it "on" a Win95 system or
Win3.1 system (as you would install an application) but you install it
on your computer (either as an equal to, or in place of, Win95/3.1) and
choose which one operating system you will run at a time.

Well, I can't solve anyone's life scheduling problems (let alone my
own!) but learning Linux (or any flavor of Unix) does involve climbing
a rather steep learning curve. It may not be for you, but speaking
for myself (and probably many others) climbing that hill is well worth
my time and very rewarding.

bo = debian 1.3
hamm = debian 2.0

Before July 24, /dists/stable was linked to bo. At that time, Debian 2.0
(hamm) was released and in now linked to stable. bo is obsolete and has
been removed (IMHO it should have been left on the mirrors for at least
a month, however).

If you are running Debian 1.3.1 or earlier, you will not be able to get
new packages from the Debian mirrors and should SERIOUSLY consider
upgrading to Debian 2.0. There are instructions at http://www.debian.org
(and a more complete set at http://www.netgod.net).

There is a critical order of package upgrading required in order to make
the transition from libc5 to libc6 without breaking your system and the
instructions in the URLs mentioned above give three different methods of
accomplishing the upgrade with minimal risk.

I think this might be a bug in kernel 2.0.33 -- it only happened with
my 2.0.33 box (not my 2.0.32 and 2.0.34 boxes). I've also never seen
documentation for it (I upgraded my kernel, instead).

Diald and Windows NT/95

1998-07-29 Thread Butch Kemper

I am using Diald to maintain the PPP link on an ISDN link from a Linux box
acting as a gateway for a local area network

The system works well except that the link is always coming up and going
back down after 36-37 seconds. The link comes backup again in 19-20
seconds and goes back down again after 36-37 seconds.

The local area network has Windows NT and Windows 95 machines.

I am running the standard filter that comes with Diald.

I need some advice on:

1. What is causing the link to yo-yo and how to change the Windows
boxes to stop the yo-yo from happening.

2. How to change the diald filter to stop the yo-yo actions.

Thanks for your help.

First you need to make a big hot cup of coffee/tea/hot-chocoloate.

Then you need to relax for a minute or two. Ok.

You seem to be confused about the concept of installing Linux on a
system. If you want to install Linux on a PC that already has windows,
you do it by simply installing it into a different partition. Then,
later on, you can set up the computer to give you a choice of which
partition to boot -- your old one with Windows, or your new one with
Linux. At first, it's recommended to just use a boot disk -- the
install process should offer to create one for you, then you can just
stick it in the drive when you want to boot Linux (later you can set
things up to get a choice between the two without using a floppy).

So you will need to either use an existing partition on your hard drive,
or re-partition your drive to make a new partition. Once you have an
empty partition, you split it in two, Linux uses one as swap space, and
one to store programs and data.

That should help you get a bit further -- come back to debian-user
and ask questions if you need to.

Setting up Soundblaster PCI64 pnp

1998-07-29 Thread Kronos
I recently purchased a SoundBlaster PCI64 PnP sound card and I'm having no
luck getting it to run. I've tried compiling sound support for it in the
kernel using the kernel-package tool and isapnp tools with the port and irq
settings that run it under windows and dos and all I get is a error message
from /dev/audio saying (device not configured). I don't think isapnp tools
detects it. I recently gave away my older Sound Blaster compatible card that
ran just fine under Debian.
Does anyone have a SoundBlaster PCI64 PnP card that was set up successfully
or have any ideas about it?
Thanks...

Re: Help required SB16 PnP

1998-07-29 Thread Eric
I agree, isapnp is the best way to do it as a general rule. I just wanted
to confirm that there are bioses which do full initializations. The
reason that mine worked out just fine is that none of the resources which
are the first pick for the sound card are used on my system, so the values
I was initializing with isapnp were the same as those that my bios does
for me.

Are you really, really sure that you have it full initialized?

Yep. If you want to do Squid proxy caching, file serving or graphic

The faster CD ROMs can cause problems (especially with bad CD's, for
example, where the weight is not good distributed on the disc). So, it may
work better with a slower CD Drive. However, good CD drives should be able
to control themselves.

Probably don't buy 3com cards. Look in the Ethernet Howto for a list of
supported cards.

Don't buy clones! You'll have a hard time finding the right Linux driver,
because they are not hardware compatibel. Buy a card you can find the name
in the supported list (Sound-HOWTO): For example, SB 16 (original).

Maybe Debian Hamm for stability, with a few selected packages upgraded.

Have you considered a back up device? Also:

IIRC, OSS/Free, the sound driver distributed with the Linux kernel, does
not support the SoundBlaster PCI64. You need to buy OSS/Linux. Take a

This is actually a bug in lesstif. (More accurately, in the libc6
lesstif contained in the package called "lesstifg")

You can fix it (supposedly, according to the lesstifg maintainer) by
installing the lesstifg from slink, version 0.84-1 or higher. (I think
the current version is something like 0.85.3-1) Once you do install
this, I _strongly_ suggest putting lesstifg on hold (with an equals
sign) in dselect. Unfortunate mistakes with version numbering means
that the hamm lesstifg will try to come back if you don't do this.

Have you any ideas on what this is trying to tell me?

Please look at smbmount's manual page for possible reasons

Running 2.1.105 if that makes a difference.

Doesn't diald come with some sort of monitor program? (use 'dpkg -L
diald' to see what comes with diald) I think it's called 'dialdmon' or
something like that? Why don't you watch that to find out what the

installing current disks---old machine

1998-07-29 Thread Alan Eugene Davis
I have tested the current resc1440-fast.bin rescue disk on a 386
motherboard with no hard drive.(Another garbage can PC
for my classroom.)There isn't any hard drive yet in the system,
but I thought I'd try to boot the rescue disk.

After loading the linux kernel and uncompressing, the disk says it
will now boot the kernel; however, it just tried to reboot, and goes
back to square one.

Is this due to lack of a hard disk, or some other problem?

fresh hamm installation...

1998-07-29 Thread Alan Su
i'm doing a fresh install of hamm, and i'm just wondering: what
happened to the ftp method of installation? my choices were floppy,
cd-rom or hard drive, but no option to do an ftp install. basically,
i'm forced to do a floppy install since all i have on the system is
win98, and in their great wisdom, microsoft has not provided a way to
make a vanilla FAT partition. oh well...just curious.

touching file dates

1998-07-29 Thread Gerald V. Livingston lI
I pulled most of the HAMM binaries via ftp under Win95. Now that I
have installed HAMM and moved the files to a proper set of
directories under my ext2fs the file dates are the dates I pulled
them down, NOT the dates from the ftp site where I got them
(ftp.de.debian.org). Now that I'm trying to mirror the binaries with
fmirror, it wants to get EVERYTHING because the file dayes are so
mismatched. I've set up my config files to ignore the file time/date
if its within at least roughly seconds ;-) but I'd
rather correct the dates on my system without downloading the whole
800+meg (at 33.6) again.

Any way to touch file dates to match those on a remote (ftp
-- no login) system?

I'm pretty sure I've made plain old MS-DOS 6.xx compatible FAT-16
partitions with Win 98. I remember when I first used it's fdisk it asked
me if I want to make all partitions FAT32 (not in those words though,
they just said if you have a big hard disk say yes or something). If you
answered yes, there's probably a way to go back and answer no. Also, you
could just download the Debian rescue disk and when the CFDISK part
comes up you could make your FAT-16 partition then.

I too have that exact video card. It's a great card but it does require a
special X server. You need S.u.S.E's Elsa_GLoria server. You can acquire
this at http://www.suse.com/. Just follow the links to their X page and to
their Elsa_GLoria card. Installation instructions are also given on the
page. One thing they don't tell you though that you have to do under
Debian is delete the 'X' bin that should be in /usr/X11R6/bin and then
just link the Elsa_GLoria bin (XSuSE_Elsa_GLoria I believe) to 'X'. If you
have any other problems after doing this feel free to mail me.

from which directory should i download?

1998-07-29 Thread David Karlin
Hello,
I recently put together a spare machine out of recycled, discarded parts at
a cost of zero cash dollars (The HDD actually came out of a friend's
trash!). It is a weak machine, though: AMD '386-25, 5MB RAM 40MB HDD,
parallel port, game port After putting together a free machine, Debian
seemed like a natural choice for the OS.

I installed 1.3 about a week ago but, as I'm a newbie, things weren't
exactly how I would like. Rather than spend lots of time tweaking bo and
_then_ upgrading to hamm, it seems more sensible to just start fresh with
hamm (especially since I don't have any user files on the bo system yet) and
then tweak.

I was browsing ftp.debian.org and found (among others) the following
directories:
/debian/hamm/hamm/disks-i386/
/debian/hamm/main/disks-i386/2.0.10_1998-07-17/
/debian/hamm/main/disks-i386/2.0.10_1998-07-21/
/debian/hamm/main/disks-i386/current/
/debian/dists/hamm/hamm/disks-i386/2.0.10_1998-07-17/
/debian/dists/hamm/hamm/disks-i386/2.0.10_1998-07-21/
/debian/dists/hamm/hamm/disks-i386/current/
(you get the idea; there are lots of directories named "hamm")

Which one should I use?

Another question: Since my system has <6MB RAM, I used the low-memory
procedure when installing bo. It didn't work until I did "lowmem" from the
boot: prompt (i.e. boot: lowmem). This option was not documented in the
install file (unless I managed to miss it). I think I read about it in an
archive. Will "boot: lowmem" work with hamm as well?

One more question: I have been messing around with PLIP on the bo setup and
am wondering if I can use it to direct-connect with (excuse me)a win95
machine. Is this possible, or am I better off using s SLIP connection?

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Maybe are the netbios (part of windows networking) requests to each other

You can see it easily with dctrl monitor, also there's the option to use a
packet sniffer such as tcpdump or sniffit to see what is really happening
in the network

This is what I have to avoid that (you must attach it to your
/etc/diald/standard.filter

If you find it as usefull as I, we could tell to include this in future
diald packages, reply me if this is Ok to you

ipx_route is in the ipx package, don't know about ipxping.
ipx_interface is good to set up each interface, and then use route to
connect them (how, I have no idea ;-)

I have hardly found much info either. I set up ipx-bridge, found it didn't
work, so I e-mailled the authors, found it was designed for kernel 1.2,
rather than 2.0.x!!
Install the package ipx, see if you can find any more info than I did.

I am running bo, what are you running?
The packaged pppd has no ipx support, so I got a new one.
I have pppd 2.2.0, with the patches for hamm installed.
You should get a newer pppd, and compile it, make sure ipx is enabled.
The patches from hamm have support for microsoft-wins I think (not too
sure actually).

Note that the commands for ipx and wins change with the newer pppd.

HTH, any other questions, just ask, you never know I might know ;-)

xbase-configure checks if there is a XF86Config file and refuses to run if it
exists. One has to rename or delete /etc/X11/XF86Config before rerunning
xbase-configure.

But you don't use xbase-configure for your card because...

Re: Printing Mac PS files containing binary data - THE ANSWER!!

1998-07-29 Thread Richard Wraith

The culprit is TCP/IP. We finally installed ppr which can send print jobs
to a printer from a linux box using Appletalk rather than TCP/IP and it
worked. This was after much stuffing around with every other link in the
printing chain.

lpr may still be a problem with it's aparaent inability to deal with
binary data but TCP/IP is a definite problem.

I do not know if LPRng can communitcate using Appletalk.

/debian/dists/hamm is a link to /debian/hamm

This leaves the following dir's left:

/debian/hamm/main/disks-i386/2.0.10_1998-07-17/
/debian/hamm/main/disks-i386/2.0.10_1998-07-21/

As the last one is newer, some bugs should be fixed in that one, (and it IS
the one the current link points to)
I'd recommend you to find your bootdisks in that dir.

Strange Debian-Install problem... and workaround

1998-07-29 Thread Norbert Bottlaender-Prier
Hello [EMAIL PROTECTED] and [EMAIL PROTECTED] !

Downloading and installing Debian-hamm-2.0 showed up :

A file problem (my god, I hoped to get rid of these M$-like messages !
Please, Dr. Debian, can you change that ?)

Install procedure stops (after having done some work, creating
directories, extracting lots of files, maybe even all of them) saying :
"File Error ! There was a problem extracting the Base System from
/shared_vfat_device/debian/hamm/hamm/disks-i386/base2_0.tgz". This
message
follows a fraction of second after a first error, hiding it nearly
completely. That one contains ..."/lib/terminfo: F"..., all the rest is
wiped out by the second message, which says "nothing" to me. The same
thing happens with rawritten install disks, and original tgz file
downloaded from mirrors, first from Germany, then Corea, then
ftp.debian.org (I would have tried this one first, but one must have a
kind of zen-state-of-mind, if you want to login there (-: ). It's each
time
the same result !

This happens on a Cyrix-133, 16M RAM, install it on an EMPTY 2.1Giga HD
(hdc, want to put it into a bigger box later) with root=500M, 128 M
swap, and all the rest free, mounted as /usr , so, guaranteed no disk
space probs ;-)

I worked around this : I installed 1.3 from CDrom (a dwarf, just enough
to make upgrade work), then used the upgrade patch (there were some
probs, too, but nothing harmful : 2 errors in the script, I could
correct myself...)

Well, I've got everything work fine (GIMP included, that was the reason
for being in a hurry, needed it "the day before yesterday", didn't want
to wait for new CD's), but I'd like to know WHAT was wrong with the base
tgz-file ? Has anyone seen something similar? What did the message MEAN
? I had the file easily uncompressed (just to see, not to work with it
;-) ) under Lose95...

Regards
Norbert

Mutt, Exim, and the From: header

1998-07-29 Thread Curt Daugaard
Mutt has decided to alter the From: line in my outgoing mail. I
rewrite this header under Exim, changing the domain portion to
that of my isp. But as you can see from the header in the present
message, the rewrite portion has been replaced with '@'.

When I check Exim's handling of things with 'exim -brw' the
rewrite is correct.

This happened once before, when I'd first installed Mutt. Then I
fixed it the MicroSoft way, i.e. by reinstalling, but I'd rather
understand this and really fix it.

I'd appreciate any insight or tips about just where to look.

Thanks.

Why not just use the "set hostname" in mutt? EG:

set hostname=calweb.com
set hostname=teleute.dyn.ml.org
set hostname=zippitydoda.com

You can set a hostname in your ~/.muttrc.

set hostname=hostname_of_your_isp.com

Another method to set your from: -line:

my_hdr From: Curt Daugaard

Thanks, that solved it.

I'm still bothered by the fact a working mailer set up could break
in the same way more than once--angering my respondents and

I take it you want to run the pipeline `command1 | command2' on each file.

I don't think you can do this with find's own command line; the easiest way
is probably to write a little script and execute that instead:

myscript:

#! /bin/bash
if [ -z "$1" ]
then
echo No parameter
exit 1
fi
command1 $1 | command2

chmod a+x myscript

find  -exec myscript {} \;

I really don't think that is a good idea. Debian created that "X" as an
suid wrapper for X servers so that the server wouldn't have to be suid.
I have the same card (Fire GL 1000 Pro) and am using the server the
"standard" Debian way. Instead of deleting Debian's "X," I would leave
that X there and modify /etc/X11/Xserver to make Debian use the new X
server (XFCom_3DLabs). You will also probably need to use SuSE's
xf86config program. The last time I checked there was no new XF86Setup
program that would work with this server, and the current stable XF86Setup
program doesn't seem to work with this server (at least for me). When you
run SuSE's xf86config, you should probably answer "no" to the question of
whether you should install a symbolic called "X" to XFCom_3DLabs since
this functionality is handled by Debian's "X" and the /etc/X11/Xserver
file.

As some one else on this list sayed, this X server is not very stable
yet. I have had some problems with it. Again, I really don't think you
should erase Debian's "X." If you do erase it, you may have problems
later on when the Permedia2 X server becomes stable and becomes part of
the XFree86 distribution meaning that it will eventually become a Debian
package. When this happens, the lack of Debian's "X" will probably mean
that future installations of XFree86 will not install properly.

Shared memory problem (SMC ethercard)

1998-07-29 Thread Kennedy Mutio

I am using 2 ethercards, one is a NE2000 and the other is an SMC card,
however, I use the NE2000 driver for both of them. Most of the time they
work well but every once in a while my smc card misbehaves. I am using
debian linux by the way. I get error messages like:

eth0: bogus packet size: 66788, status=0xff, nxpg=0x0

Apparently this is a shared memory problem common among PCI machines that
are not configured to map in ISA memory devices. Threfore, you end up
reading the PC's RAM (all 0xff values) instead of the RAM on the card that
contains the data from the received packet.
I am not 100% sure whether that is it but whether it is or isn't, I still
don't know how to solve the problem.

Any ideas?

I've had similar problems. I tried different floppies and tried rawriting
them several times; eventually I got a floppy that would boot properly. At
this point, I think your problem is with the boot floppy, not the hard drive.

Someone told me that floppy installs are notoriously unreliable, and that
he's known of people who had to try formatting/rawriting a floppy several
times before it would work (like in my case, mentioned above).

Also, in the disk images directory of the ftp.debian.org site, which is
where I downloaded my images from, there's a couple of alternative resc1440
images, one of which is specifically for most laptops and some desktops
that have trouble reading the compressed image on the normal resc1440.bin
disk. It's called resc1440-tecra.bin, or something similar. If
reformatting/rawriting your floppy several times doesn't work, or if trying
3 or 4 different floppies doesn't work, you might try this alternative image.

Installation lockup on boot?

I'm trying to install Debian 2.0 on my laptop to see what's changed, and
I can't get the rescue disk to boot. I've tried both off of floppy and
the loadlin off of the harddrive method. In both cases, it freezes right
after the md line. I assume it's probably probing for scsi cards there,
of which I have none. Any workarounds? Any reason the scsi drivers
aren't compiled like modules like the net drivers are? :)

I've got a Gateway Solo 9100LS, PII-266, 6.4 gig ide, 128 meg ram, no
scsi anywhere, ide DVD and a 3com net and 3com modem pc card.

Thanks in advance.

As others have said you can fix it in ~/.muttrc or /etc/Muttrc.
Actually, I think this is a bug in either Mutt, exim, or their interaction,
because it works just fine with smail.

I think hostname and domain name handling on Unix is pretty messy all up.

I can't play any mp3 files, that's it.

So I resort to the CLI to play it. I'm looking forward on d/l'ing a gtk

there are way too many gui frontends out there so I might as well use them.

DEATH TO SPAMMERS!

   Aardvark Daily

"Spam not ours" says American Cancer Society
   Copyright © 1997 to 7am News

   6 May 1997

The American Cancer Society is angry at reports that someone is using
their name in an apparent attempt to compile a list of email addresses
from those who fall for a sob-story about Little Jessica Mydek.

A number of Aardvark readers have written asking if I knew whether the
email they received was bona-fide or a scam - well it looks like a
   scam.

The email states that Jessica Mydek is 7 years old and suffering from
an acute and very rare case of cerebral carcinoma. It goes on to say
that she has but 6 months to live and that the American Cancer Society
and corporate sponsors will donate 3 cents towards continuing cancer
research each time the letter is forwarded.

Finally it requests that you email a list of your "collegues" [sic]
and friends to an email address at AOL.

Aardvark's research has indicated that the ACS have no involvement
with this email. They do not have any record of the child in question
and most certainly do not receive any donations as a result.

Spokesperson for the ACS, Susan Jacobs, was very keen that the
Internet public be informed that the ACS has nothing whatsoever to do
   with this email.

AOL have been contacted to find out whether the address given in the
email is bonafide and to advise them of a possible fraud.

Chances are that this is a scam being perpetrated by someone looking
to obtain a list of gullible Net users who can be targeted later with
all manner of "special offers" and "we think you're so stupid you
might be interested in this" type of deals. By claiming the
involvement of ACS, this is clearly case of fraud and hopefully will
be treated as such by the authorities.

The advice of Aardvark and The American Cancer Society is - if you get
a copy of this email - ignore it, don't send any email to the address
specified and don't pass it on.

The Adaptec controllers have been flakey on Linux (though it may change as
Adaptec has finally started giving out specs). With the current drivers
Adaptec 2940 (aic7xxx) cards get confused under high load. The BusLogic
MultiMaster BT958 controllers run quite well under Linux and (from my
experience) are quite a bit faster than the Adaptec controllers. Onboard
or as a PCI card rarely makes any difference, as the 'on bord'
controllers are just the PCI card soldered directly on to the motherboard.

Another contoller that seem to be working nicely are the
Symbios Logic 53c875 based cards such as Asus's SC875.

LILO Problem

1998-07-29 Thread Matthew D. Myers
I recently decided to install LILO on my laptop. According to the HOW-TO
and liloconfig I should be able to hold shift while booting and get the
following prompt:

F1234:

but mine has an extra step... when I hold shift while booting I get this
prompt:

AF1:

If I press A (not lowercase, lowercase locks it up.) it runs the floppy
drive. If I press 1 it boots my default win95 (which is fine.) If I press
F (not lowercase, same as above) I get the F1234: menu at which time I can
press 1 (Win95), or 2(Linux).

I want to skip the first (AF1:) menu and go straight to the F1234: menu when
I hold shift while booting. What did I do wrong?

Actually...While this owrks...it is not the "Standard" way that
I have seen. It seems nmore common to make the shell
/bin/false
This is an executable (/dev/null is not and gives a permission denied error)
and is an executable which just exits (retuyrning a value nonetheless but
still just exiting)..or form the man page:
---man false---
FALSE(1) FALSE(1)

NAME
   false - do nothing, unsuccessfully

SYNOPSIS
   false
   false {--help,--version}
---done---
this is wrong for debina tho...I just tried it...neither option works
of course...you could make their login shell /usr/bin/yes (or a wrapper that
runs /usr/bin/yes "Go AWAY!"

I've seen this happen a lot with different machines (which incidentally have NT
installed). The BIOS simply does not initialize ps/2 ports at boot. You might
just
want to check the cables and if the manufacturer does have BIOS updates.

Why "of course"? It works for me:

:~$ /bin/false --help
Usage: /bin/false [OPTION]...
Exit unsuccessfully.

--help display this help and exit
--version output version information and exit

Report bugs to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I suppose you typed:

false is a shell builtin

Re: dselect missing ftp option

1998-07-29 Thread JonesMB
Thanks for the responses to my request. It turns out that I needed to add the
dpkg-ftp package.
Is it possible to upgrade/update individual packages on 1.3 systems or any
upgrades that have to done must be preceded by the 1.3 -> 2.0 upgrade. I ask
because I am trying to get tcpdump but the only one I see is the one that
requires libc6. Does that mean that the libc5-built packages are no longer
available for download.
The ftp sites I use are the one at Michigan and the ftp.debian.org site.

Well, you can upgrade the 1.3 packages, but the only thing to update
them to is the 2.0 packages ...

So, yes, unless you want to find source and install/compile it yourself
locally, you'll have to do the libc5->libc6 upgrade. It's really not
that bad, and you can then get all the nifty stuff in hamm ...

Re: your mail

1998-07-29 Thread Alexander
Hi...

Note that Debian itself is fully Y2K compliant as shipped. If your
system's BIOS stores dates in 4-digit format (most modern BIOSes and some
older versions of AMIBIOS, even on some 386 and 486 machines, are also Y2K
compliant), your system is fully Y2K compliant. Otherwise, the BIOS may
affect time, in which case the `hwclock' program may be useful. (I'm not
sure what it is because my Debian system is fully Y2K compliant anyway.)

I don't think Microsoft is an evil company, either. I just think they're

Re: Linus Torvalds interview

1998-07-29 Thread Alexander
Hi...

Well, Windows is a decent OS if you know how to use and configure it right
(and work around its many bugs). If you can't deal with bugs in an OS you
don't deserve to be allowed to use a computer, or even own one. Windows
took many years to develop into its present state of glory and bugs alike.
Do you think MS took only 5 minutes to design and implement the UI? Or
FAT32? I don't think so.

Hi...

Your C: drive in dosemu is write protected. Check dosemu.conf for anything
about write proteection or something. (then again, it could also be the
buggy as f***in' h*** FreeDOS kernel acting up again - try using a MS-DOS
floppy if you haven't already)

Hi...

XEmacs also has a console mode with which you can replace GNU Emacs. I'm
not sure that it's exactly the same, but it does work and is good.

I used that patch for a while. It messes with extended ASCII characters

Re: Year 2000 compliance

1998-07-29 Thread Alexander
Hi...

Linux has no Y2K issues aside from the BIOS. It's that simple. However,
sometime in the 2030s, it will have some time_t problems if not fixed by
then. They should be, although you will probably need to upgrade your
embedded system if you want it to keep running after then.

Hamm and 3com's 905 PCI.

1998-07-29 Thread Liran Zvibel
Hi.
After using Debian 2.0 at home (and enjoying it very much) I decided to
bring it to work, install it on some computers and show the world that
Debian is better then both Win.NT and RedHat5.1.
Well, I didn't bring the CD with me since I knew that I can have it here
through NFS.
The problem is that the installation floppies (the drv1440, I mean)
doesn't have 3com 90x PCI drivers, and I can't work. (I'm writing this
from my other computer that has RedHat (that will hopefully become
Debian as soon as I can get it to work with the network card)).

BTW: At home I have an sbpro CDROM, and it has a module, but here I have
an ATAPI CDROM that doesn't have any modules, will it work without any
modules installed?

BTW2: We're planning to replace out SunOSes machined with Linux and NT
machines, and if I can show the other people here that Debian is superior
than RH, out math faculty will be powered by Debian machines!!!

Thanks,
Liran Zvibel.

Re: DVD support for linux

1998-07-29 Thread Alexander
Hi...

Ok, I'm going to respond to that one thing at a time... :P

DVD: Should be supported, including MPEG, but don't expect proprietary
stuff on DVDs to run.

Video card: As long as X and svgalib support it, it should probably be
fine. S3 Trio* based cards will definitely work. Odd things like Rendition
Verite will not. Check if X and svgalib support a video card you like.

SCSI vs. Ultra ATA: Ultra ATA/Ultra DMA is less expensive. Since harddisks
can't really transfer even 33 MB/s (Ultra DMA), SCSI isn't important
unless you want to use external devices or more than 7 of them instead of
4. Or if you want to network them with another machine. (yes, SCSI buses
can be networked...)

AWE 64 ISA/PCI: Both should be supported. Check kernel configs and
packages.

66 MHz bus vs. 100 MHz: This will make a HUGE difference. Get a 100 MHz
bus system if you can afford it, this should definitely make your system
faster. You will need 100 MHz memory, though, so plan to replace that if
you have older memory.

AGP: Not sure.

What you need to select is the 3c59x driver. It works equally well for
3c59x and 3c905 NICs.

I've been using that driver for months now, with very little problem.

It's really up to you. I really recommend building a machine from scratch,
but if you insist on having someone else do it for you, a specialized

RE: LILO Problem

1998-07-29 Thread Richardson,Anthony

The prompts you are referring to aren't LILO prompts. When you run
liloconfig
LILO isn't installed as the master boot loader on your system another
program
is (I can't recall the name of the program that is used, but look thru
the
liloconfig script for details and then look into the appropriate /usr/doc
subdirectory for boot manager configuration options.)

Alternatively, skip liloconfig and create your own lilo.conf file that
installs
lilo as master boot loader. You have a lot more options available and a
lot
more features as well (lilo can load a boot sector from a logical
partition or load
the kernel directly from a logical partition for example, the boot
manager used with
bo can only load boot sectors from primary partitions.)

works fine. The only problem is that i have a canon 4100, and comparing
with win95, that have the right filter, in linux, its much more slowly
and cannot print in colors

Where can i get a filter for canon bjc-4100

I have try with apsfilter, but it even dont have a filter for canon
600...

Take a look at the tee command. Its in the package
shellutils.

With tee you should be able to redirect stderr to stdout
(for whatever shell you are using) and then use tee to
copy stdout to a file.

It is true that OSS/Free does not support the Midi part of the AWE (beside
OPL3 synthesis, which sounds plain bad).

But the consequence is wrong. You can still use the awe patches from the
awe-drv packages. They work great, and are free. They are also included in
the 2.1.x kernels. My Howto explains how they can be configured and used.
You can apply them by running "/usr/src/awe-drv/install.sh"

No need to buy anything.

It sounds as if the problem is not with your modem, but with the nfs server.
I've had that error when the file system I have been trying to mount hasn't
been properly exported on the far end (i.e., the nfs server's side). You might
try bouncing your system, on the off chance the problem is on your end... but
I'd contact the administrator of the nfs server and make sure your DNS and/or
IP address is included in the /etc/exports file on the server.

Uh, so what IS the problem? Are you actually having driver problems
with the NIC or some specific problem with NFS?

: I forgot to mension it before, but the reply I get is:
: mount: RPC: Port mapper failure - RPC: Timed Out

Aha - so the NIC works, but trying to mount an NFS share on that machine
does not.

Is the NFS server running Debian? Some BSD NFS servers don't get along
well with the NFS support in Linux. Did you edit /etc/exports on the
server to allow access from the new machine? Have you inserted the NFS
module or compiled NFS support into the kernel on the new machine? Have
you examined the logs on the server to see if a connection is being
attempted, but denied?

The computer worked before (it was a win.NT station), and I now that the
ethernet card works fine. I also know that the NFS has no problems since I
was able to mount it and work with it from the RH computer, that is
configured as the Debian one is (except for the hostname and ip).
This is a Debian problem.
BTW: When I get it to work (And it will work today, whether the machine
wants to or not), what is the directory to mount? (/dists,
/dists/hamm, /dists/hamm/hamm, /dists/hamm/hamm/binary-i386 , any other
locatoin?) - just to save my time...

Thanks,
Liran.
