Hello, I installed debian and it doesn't print. The printcap file is unchanged and looks allright. The machine prints with Red Hat, so it isn't hardware. The message I get is lpr: unable to get official name for local machine If I enter hostname I get the hostname (debian). When I cat printcap > /dev/lp1 it prints. When I do lpc status I get queuing is enabled printing is enabled no entries no daemon present When I do ps -aux | grep lpd I see the lpd as a process. Can anyone explain 1. what the error message means and why lpr doesn't work? 2. why does lpc report no daemon is present when lpd is running? problem w/ upgrade to hamm (+ mach64 x server....)
Hello all... I'm relatively new to the whole linux thing, but I've been running debian 1.3.1 for about 1 month now with no problems, EXCEPT that I haven't been able to get X running smoothly with my ATI 3d rage II +DVD video card... could only get 640x400 with very lame picture quality. I tried the new s.u.s.e. mach64 server and it worked better (great resolution and picture during configuration) , but not good enough (had i/o problem with mouse - server wouldn't run after exiting from the configuration program (where, by the way, the mouse worked perfectly)...) ...so, I figure I'll try to upgrade to hamm (?). Ran the autoup.sh program (seemed to work except for a reported error with "slang"), then tried to run dselect via ftp (which has worked great for me several times) updated using the frozen_main (etc) - worked fine, updated info on approx 1500 packages... "selected" ALL (1st line). When I tried to execute "install", it reports that it "can't find packages for dist/frozen/main" (+contrib & non-free) "(rerun Update) nothing to get" this leads to reports of "processing downloaded files, package file is non-debian file" it does this again even if I update again (note that it never even attempts to download the packages, because it thinks that the package files are not debian files. I am using the default answers for every prompt (just like I have done successfully updating bo in the past). Any ideas on either (or both) problems? Re: Is there any program like ICQ ? Thanks ! ;)
Yup, try http://www.mirabilis.com There is a linux version there for X, you also need to get the JDK. use this method to install: (I got this from the list early this year, I have not tried it, coz I havent had time :) ) == With some trial and error, I've been able to setup ICQ for multiple users under Debian. The idea was to give each user an ~/.icq directory where she can keepher personal configuration. In my experience, if you use the installation directions which come with the program, things will not work like you might expect. What I did to get it working properly: 1) Install the Debian JDK. 2) Download the ICQ tar ball (http://www.icq.com/) AS ROOT DO THE FOLLOWING: 3) cd /usr/local 4) tar -xzvf icqtarball.tgz 5) chown -R root.root ICQJava 6) cd /usr/local/ICQJava 7) Edit "install" and change the following: 1) uncomment JAVA_HOME 2) JAVA_HOME = /usr/lib/jdk1.1 3) ICQ_HOME = /usr/local/ICQJava 8) ./install Note: This will create the file /usr/local/ICQJava/ICQ which is the script you will want to run after making a few more modifications. 9) Edit the "ICQ" file in (8) above by replacing the "-path" parameter with "-path $HOME/.icq" . This will tell ICQ to use the ~/.icq directory for all of its needs -- including the user's personal configuration. This and step 10 are the critical changes. AS THE USER DO THE FOLLOWING: 10) Now, you need to create the ~/.icq directory for each user: 1) mkdir ~/.icq 2) cd ~/.icq 3) mkdir conf 4) chmod 700 conf 5) ln -s /usr/local/ICQJava/Images 6) ln -s /usr/local/ICQJava/Sounds AS ROOT DO THE FOLLOWING: 11) cd /usr/local/bin 12) ln -s ../ICQJava/ICQ icq AS THE USER DO THE FOLLOWING: 13) run using "icq" = Michael Beattie ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) --- "Bother," said Pooh, as the rip cord came away in his hand --- Debian GNU/Linux Ooohh You are missing out! -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Dead keys and X11 3.3.2 & svgalib and mouse I/O permissions...
Hi everybody: I have two problems I think I know the solution but I don't know how to apply it. First is the eternal problem of the dead keys under X11. I had it solved using Thomas Quinnot modified libX11.so.6.1, but as I have upgraded to hamm and to X11R6 3.3.2 it doesn't work anymore. I have tried to reinstall the modified library, but, as it is from version 3.3.1, it doesn't work. Anyone knows if there is any solution for version 3.3.2? I need my spanish accents!!! :-) The second problem is about the I/O permissions in svgalib. I have given suid bits to Lincity and some vga games and they now work with svgalib without problem (yes, I know... potential security hole... but I only use my computer at home for my and my brother, so...), but now they quarrel about ot getting the proper permissions for the mouse. I have configured /etc/vga/libvga.config to work with my PS2 mouse in psaux, but no way, though. I can run them as root without problem... so I guess I need a new suid bit somewhere... but where? The standard 2.0.33 source package (sunsite, tsx-11, etc) does NOT have the latest patches. ppp, chat finaly works but....
I finally got pon to start pppd and chat to connect to the internet via modem. The first time I typed pon it dialed out, but this was after playing with the commands manually from the command line. The next time I booted the system and tried it again nothing happened. I typed ps and saw that both pppd and chat were active, but nothing happening at the modem. After about a minute pppd and chat shut down, and then restarted. THEN the modem came to life. I am using a Motorola modem-surfer EXTERNAL 28.8 fax modem. The script(s) are set to use 115200 baud. My guess is that it takes two or three tries for chat and the modem to agree on the interlink speed. But how come windows 95 can bring up the modem on the first try (no wait at all)? Any ideas on how to speed this up? On the plus side Netscape 4.05 under linux seems faster than NS 3.x or NS 4.x under windows-95, so it's worth the wait. As soon as I get the windows machine up with an ethernet card, I'll move the modem to the linux machine. Right now they share the modem with a switch box. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Note the missing & > > those should be exec'd, ie exec xterm &, etc. WHAT? First off, not using the "exec" anywhere is _just_fine_. Some people don't like not using that because then there's an extra process floating around until you exit X. If, however, you do decide that you can't afford the (rather small) overhead, or you decide that it's messy to have extra processes just floating there, only the last line (the fvwm2 line) should have "exec" at the front. If you want to do any cleaning up after you exit X, you need that process hanging around and so can't use exec. "exec &" is a bit non-sensical. It does nothing different from " &" and just spreads confusion about what should be in an .xsession file. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? re DDS2 -tape backup
I may have the same tape drive as you. I find an IBM (made my archive corp) DDS2 scsi tape drive at a ham radio flea market for $10. It works fine thou it is slower than a QIC drive (but holds lots more). I am using tar. To put more than one backup on a tape use the /dev/nst0 device (no rewind when done). To move from one backup set to another use the mt commands EOF and EOT I think. The mt rewind and eject commands work with this drive. If you try to erase the tape, be prepared to wait about 2-3 hours I just use a video tape bulk tape eraser! I need to write some shell scripts to handle the tape drive, ie: making directories and such. If you put several backup sets on a tape and then had to use tar and mt to find a specific file, it would take quite some time to run DDS is slow. Help: upgrade to Hamm not working!
Hi, I decided to bite the bullet and upgrade to hamm. I downloaded the upgrade script along with all the necessary packages and ran it. What is the correct > syntax??? The problem is that --exclude applies only to files tar finds by descending directories, not to files mentioned explicitly on the command line. When you use *, that's the same as typing every file name explicitly (since the shell does not pass tar the *, but instead passes it each file's name - try 'echo *' some time to see what the shell does); therefore, --exclude doesn't apply. The following appears to do what you want - be aware, however, that this tar archive contains ".", so when extracting it it will change the permissions of the current directory to the permissions of the directory when the tar archive was made: tar -czvf ../test.tar.gz --exclude='*exclude*pattern*' . (Note the ' marks and the final period - also note that test.tar.gz has to be in a different directory, or it will try to include itself - nasty recursion) Note that it's usually bad form to create a tar archive of files without a directory. That is, if the directory /home/martind/work/vander contains the files I want to make a tar archive out of, it's better to do: cd /home/martind/work/; tar czf vander.tar.gz vander than to do: cd /home/martind/work/vander; tar czf ../vander.tar.gz * The first method will mean that when one extracts the archive, all the extracted files go into a vander/ subdir. The second method means that all the newly extracted files go into the current directory, where there may already be much stuff. Note that if you use the first method, a --exclude will work as you might expect it should. If you really must have a tar archive with files in the current directory, and don't want to have "." in the archive, then try: (this should all be one long line) find * -prune \! -name '*exclude*pattern1*' -print | xargs tar czvf testtar.tar.gz --exclude='*exclude*pattern2*' The difference between '*exclude*pattern1*' and '*exclude*pattern2*' is that the first pattern excludes files in the current directory and the second excludes files in subdirs. of the current directory. For example, if I had the following files on my system: /tmp/tartest/ /tmp/tartest/bar /tmp/tartest/tbark /tmp/tartest/frog /tmp/tartest/sounds/ /tmp/tartest/sounds/frogcall.au /tmp/tartest/sounds/dogbark.au /tmp/tartest/sounds/catmeow.au /tmp/tartest/froglegs/ /tmp/tartest/froglegs/recipe1.txt /tmp/tartest/froglegs/recipe2.txt and then I did: cd /tmp/tartest find * -prune \! -name '*frog*' -print | \ xargs tar czvf mytar.tar.gz --exclude='*bar*' I would then get (as the output of 'tar tzf mytar.tar.gz'): bar tbark sounds/ sounds/frogcall.au sounds/catmeow.au Note that the '*frog*' excluded the 'frog' file in the top directory and the 'froglegs' directory. Also note that the '*bar*' didn't exclude the bar and tbark in the top directory (the way the long command is written causes tar to be called with the arguments 'bar', 'tbark', and 'sounds' - these are the output of the find command), but did exclude the 'dogbark.au' in the sounds directory - this is because tar was handed 'sounds' as an argument, and descended into the directory itself. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". If anyone has any information on > how to get around this (or pointers on where to look for it), I'd really > appreciate it. First of all, I don't think the version of samba you have supports the *use* of WINS servers. I know recent versions do because I'm on the samba list and follow its development. Anyway, if your version does, then don't use 'wins support = yes' as this makes your machine act as a wins *server* which is not what you want. You want to be a wins client. From what I gather from the smb.conf man page, the 'wins server = x.x.x.x' makes your machine register with a wins server, while it doesn't say anything about using this server for wins lookups. At any rate, you may not need the wins server. You may be able to overcome this by using the 'interfaces = ' option. WINS name lookup (unlike DNS lookups) defaults to using network broadcast. This is problematic with dialup lines since on a point-to-point like only the guy on the other side will see your broadcast. Broadcasts are not relayed by routers (unless they're directed broadcasts bound for an interface other than the one which they were received), but I digress. I think I'm missing what you're trying to do though. Let's get back to who's trying to connect to who. Perhaps you could draw a little ascii-art network representation. If I understand correctly, your Linux box dials up your NT network. Then you're trying to connect to a network share which is on the network you've dialed into, right? Is this a windows box you're trying to connect to? You 'local win95 machine' is local to where, your Linux box or the network you're dialing into? -- Jens B. Trying adding the boot parameter "max_scsi_luns=1". If you're booting from LILO you can add the line to your image section: append = "max_scsi_luns=n" Or just to get booting you can hit Scroll-Lock when "LILO" appears and then you can type the parameter on the lilo boot line. Note that you'll need the name of the image too, so you'll type something like: Linux max_scsi_luns=1 Stefan Kunkel wrote: > Hi > I have a little Problem with my Debian-Kernel since i have connected > my Yamaha CDR-102 ! > When i boot from DOS, the Kernel finds all SCSI-Devices (including > the Recorder), but then he tries to find something on the ID of the > Recorder with the LUN of 1 and tries to reset the SCSI-Controller > (Tekram 390-U) > and then nothing happens !!! Reading mailing list with gnus, but regular mail with MH
I can see the advantage of reading this mailing list threaded with gnus, specially after a two-week absence (when threads are more useful). I currently use procmail to filter all Debian traffic into a spool file (/var/spool/mail/debian) and use mh-e to read it like I do my regular mail spool. (I hacked a few Emacs commands to read that alternate folder and delete threads with one keustroke.) Can anyone who also uses MH for regular and gnus for the Debian mailing list post their relevant Emacs configuration? I'd like to try it, but only if mh-e can also use the resultant file layout. -- Peter Galbraith, research scientist <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Maurice Lamontagne Institute, Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada P.O. It seems that someone compiles in the multi-LUN option into the SCSI driver. I run a mix of IDE and SCSI drives. When this occurs, I disconnect the SCSI controller and boot pure IDE. I then recompile the kernel to get rid of that (useless to me) option and install the modified kernel (complete with bootable floppy). After shutdown, I re-install my SCSI controller and boot from the modified kernel and all is well! It seems to me that if someone _insist_ on compiling in the multi-LUN option, the driver _should_ timeout and continue with the bootup process (rather than hang up the system). -- -= Sent by Debian 1.3 Linux =- Thomas Kocourek KD4CIK @[EMAIL PROTECTED]@westgac3.dragon.com Remove @_@ for correct Email address --... ...-- ... -.. . -.- -.. - -.-. .. -.- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Check the rc scripts (look in /etc/init.d) for one related to NFS and see if you can manually start the daemons. I am afraid I do not know the Debian rc setup that well yet, so I cannot be more specific. On a Solaris system, there are files called "nfs.client" and "nfs.server". The first is started by default, the second has to be set to start by telling the init program to go to run state 3, rather than run state 2, as its initdefault in /etc/inittab. I expect something similar on the Debian Linux side. I hope this helps you get NFS running. --- Bob McGowan i'm: bob dot mcgowan at artecon dot com -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Thanks in advance. > >James The thing is that Linux is not arranging the different partitions you might have on your hdd as c: d: ... but has a hirarchical directory structure starting with / (root). This allows you to mount partitions in virtually any place in this structure . This is a great thing for upgrades - lets assume you created several linux partitions at install time and mounted them so that they would take their places as /, /usr/ and /var. Should you ever encounter that the partition mounted as /usr does no longer provide sufficient capacity, you could simply install another hdd, copy the contents of the /usr partition to it and then mount the new harddrive as /usr. Accomplished is this with "mount", which takes several options, allowing you to mount any filesystem supported by your kernel: mount -t -o , where is vfat in case of win95 (dos: fat) the partition you would like to mount - linux organizes them this way: there are a lot of options for mount and the different supported filesystems - see man mount, etc. In your case, you probably want to use "nonumtails", to display vfat's long filenames correctly. /dev/hda ---> primary IDE hdd /dev/hda1 ---> first partition on primary IDE hdd /dev/hda2 ---> second ... /dev/hdb ---> secondary IDE hdd /dev/sda ---> first SCSI for you this would mean you'd have to mount /dev/hda1, since you are using IDE ( I assume) and windows/dow always uses the first partition on the first hdd for c:. would be the directory in the hirarchical order that you would like to display the contents of c: (/dev/hda1). This can be any directory - /mnt is a standard directory for temporary mounting of devices. I use /win95 for my driveC. Mount is always started at boot time, getting its information from /etc/fstab. Thus all linux file-systems are mounted. You can edit /etc/fstab to meet your needs. I don't want to get into detail on this topic, there is a lot of information on this available. I'll atach a version of my /etc/fstab for you to look at if you want - contact if you need more info ;-). hope this helps a bit. - -- Stone's Law: One man's "simple" is another man's "huh?" - -- == Christian Zander * web: ishmael.ml.org/~zander * email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: 2.6.3ia Charset: noconv iQCVAwUBNWskPxZiJXs96Q11AQEXIwQAuoKpfYTp2bO7vpO2KhOXdr45REt+6iRa 5HjuQsYn/3D3s8PgUnUYuoPSbPTBobAp/Zr4EMgyLbeAYc+0McZAyKMNfzQKAHbA ylZc9ZQU9fM1BElssSB6AsYQAtFmolQJgc+vIKwdbXitctKu8VQQzVNJ3c+fxyM5 fBg2UWoh41o= =+Yfc -END PGP SIGNATURE- # /dev/hda5 / ext2 defaults0 1 /dev/hdb2 none swap sw 0 0 proc/proc proc defaults0 0 /dev/hda6 /usr ext2 defaults0 2 /dev/hdb1 /var ext2 defaults0 2 /dev/hda1 /win95 vfat nonumtail, user,rw,exec /dev/hda7 /cdimage ext2 user, noauto /dev/hda8 /winmedia vfat nonumtail, user,rw,exec /dev/hdb3 /wingames vfat nonumtail, user,rw,exec /dev/hdb4 /windata vfat nonumtail, user,rw,exec /dev/hdc/cdrom iso9660 user,ro,nonumtail, noauto /dev/sr0/cdwriter iso9660 user,ro,nonumtail, noauto

Hi Igor, I've been trying in vain for days to enable xdm on my DEBIAN linux distribution and if today I'm contacting you ,it's because I'm in desperate need of some help.My problem is the following : I read the FAQOMATIC on about How to enable xdm and there it is said that I should uncomment a few lines in the file /usr/X11/config -- now this file is not there on my system and moreover it does not seem to play a major in the booting process .After reading the debian documentation , I understand that I should put all scripts to be executed at boottime in /etc/init.d and then create a symbolic link to it in the /etc/rcN.d directory where N is the default runlevel in the file /etc/inittab.I'm really confused here and I no longer know what to do.I tried placing xdm in the directory /etc/init.d and a symbolic link to it in /etc/rcN.d. At first it seems to work , but every time I put my login and password , it returns to the xlogin widget each time. This has driven me crazy and I just want someone to tell me how to do it the right way.It should be no secret you that I am quite new to Linux and managing my own system though I've been using HP-UX as a user at college.I'll be glad if you could email me to help me out .Thanks a lot. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Re: How do I find out who's using port # xxxxx
You can *also* do this with lsof: % sudo lsof -i tcp:25 COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE/OFF INODE NAME sendmail 239 root4u inet 0x005bc810 0t0 TCP *:smtp (LISTEN) % using -i tcp:smtp works as well, "lsof -i :domain" is an example of finding either... -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". I have yet to find a decent font that scales well enough to be useful to me for an xterm. When you need a 12x20 or 12x22 font because you need to use 1024x768 on a 14" monitor with my vision, you'll have an appreciation for what I mean. =p This is part of the reason I (do not|can not effectively) use X. If I can save up my pennies for a nice 19-21" monitor I actually have a 20" monitor. I was hoping to be able to get it working. At the time I was using Other Operating Systems and they'd NEVER support reasonably the fixed freq 1024x768.. Now in Linux with svgatextmode and some X modelines, I probably could use it if I could somehow get the hsync on green--my Millennium supports fixed vsync monitors. The vsync is almost certainly 60Hz. The hsync could be averaged out. There's a little circuit that could be built to put the sync on green for me and I don't recall it costing much.. Otherwise paying for a similarly sized monitor is going to take awhile. I've tried telling X to use a virtual desktop, but that is just clumsy IMO very hard to use and defeats the whole point of having lots of non-text stuffs on the screen at once. I can see the icons fine thanks, it's the text that needs help. pgp27W5fQpygr.pgp Description: PGP signature

Too right! You *don't* need to do this; it is done automatically by the package installation scripts. Delete whatever you have put in there and definitely reinstall xbase. The documentation you have been reading correctly describes what happens; your mistake is in thinking that *you* have to do it. > I tried placing xdm in the >directory >/etc/init.d and a symbolic link to it in /etc/rcN.d. At first it seems >to work , but every time >I put my login and password , it returns to the xlogin widget each >time. You have put xdm itself in place of the script that should be controlling it. If you ever think you need to perform such convoluted exercises on any package, think again. Any such package would be so broken as to be unusable. A package ought to install straight off with no problems and very little interaction. >This has driven me >crazy and I just want someone to tell me how to do it the right way.It >should be no secret >you that I am quite new to Linux and managing my own system though I've >been using >HP-UX as a user at college.I'll be glad if you could email me to help me >out .Thanks a >lot. -- Oliver Elphick[EMAIL PROTECTED] Isle of Wight http://www.lfix.co.uk/oliver PGP key from public servers; key ID 32B8FAA1 "Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves." Re: disk server?
I have a similar setup at home except instead of a dedicated disk server I just picked a machine that wasn't too busy and had some free space and exported /home and /var/spool/mail to my other two machines. I quickly realized I needed nis as well to keep uids/gids in sync. I just went by the NFS/NIS howtos and the redhat/debian yp*/nis packages and had no real problems. One interesting side effect is that netscape and afterstep (and other things I imagine) stores state information in a users home directory that causes a few oddities when running X sessions on two machines at the same time on different boxes. as a temporary kludge I just linked ~khill/.netscape to /opt/local/khill/.netscape on each machine I use it... there should be a better approach, though... -kevin On Tue, 26 May 1998, Will Lowe wrote: > My personal linux network has been up and running for a while, but it's > getting to be a pain to have several computers with home directories on > each ... so I'm debating building a disk server. Hallo, Why do you call that an "upgrade"? I have tried out exim several times without success. In my opinion smail is much easier to install and works with a lot less problems than exim. Yes, I know what you mean - at the time that I though Linux was some sort of light bulb (you laugh, it's not that long ago though) I was using win95 with a 14" monitor @1024x768 with 60Hz. It turned out that my eyes would fatigue too early, which forced me to lower the res to 800x600, which was ok for my windows apps. When I started calculating modelines and experimenting with X I discovered that most people that had contributed modelines were using BIG monitors - most of the X software seemed to be developed for big displays as well. You mention xterm - i think it is a good example. Working with the virtual desktops was fun at first (I'd never done anything remotely similar before and it was a way of making up the missing space, however Netscape Mail was just to big to fit one of the virtual desktops which resulted in a permanent desktop switching to reach the several send/receive buttons (I didn't know about Xresources then). I finally decided it was no use running X and its software below 1024x768 (at least my tired eyes did) and I bought a 17" monitor - I regret the purchase of many things related to my computer, but this was a good investment. Maybe you should consider getting a 17" one instead of 19" - they aren't that bad. I was surprised when I got mine: it allows 1152x864 @100Hz. How old is your 20" monitor? Re: HELP! Installing Packages From Another Drive...
Chris, Where do you find the options, ie. nonumtail, user, rw, exec, for the fstab file? I have looked in (man)fstab, mount, mfstab, etc, but have been unable to find anything. What I am really interested in is the "nonumtail" meaning. I think I can figure out the user, read/write/exec, but could not find what the meaning is for that option, nonumtail. Let me know what it means or where I can find the meaning. Thanks in advance. RE: Java JDK 1.15 on Debian?
You download the jdk1.1-runtime debian package (And jdk1.1-dev if you want to do development) from non-free/devel. Then use dpkg as usual. I'm talking about the panning around the desktop.. ie a 1024x768 desktop with a 640x480 window for example. DOS programs that do this range from $50 (MAGic) to $500 (ZoomText) and those didn't AFAIK do windoze, though I am sure ZoomText does by now. X server will do it free, if that's what you want. It's not what I want though. I want just the TEXT bigger, or a monitor that makes EVERYTHING bigger. > I finally decided it was no use running X and its software below 1024x768 > (at least my tired eyes did) and I bought a 17" monitor - I regret the > purchase of many things related to my computer, but this was a good > investment. Yes, but you see without large fonts I have trouble in 800x600 on my 14", I really should be using 640x480. I have VERY bad eyesight. =p > How old is your 20" monitor? Do you think its necessary to modify it in > order to make it run? Old enough that it requires a sync on green and for 20" is a 60Hz monitor with 1024x768 _ONLY_, ie no VGA. Before I got this thing, the Commission for the Blind of Oregon (I am considered legally blind and this state funded organization helps find people like me reasonable jobs and helps pay for or often outright buys adaptive equipment that makes the task easier) offered to try and buy the 21" monitor that my counsellor at the Commission agreed would help me LOTS more than any software solution which tended to slow me down and had compatibility problems anyway.. The end result was that they could buy the $500 software, a $2500 speech synthesizer and DOS speech software (summer of 95, all win95 was at the time was hype) but not the $1200 monitor. Not specifically adaptive equipment so they couldn't do it. I found one here[1] that looked promising, but that's still gonna be $650 by the time I could get it shipped It's only 19" but it should do for 1024x768 and possibly an occasional trek into 1280x1024 for viewing of very hi-res graphics. It's only a .28mm but it'll still go up to 1600x1200 which is more than I can use for ANYTHING practical. It's a 202MHz monitor with freqs of 30-95kHz, 50-160Hz so it'll do thos nice, big, high refresh rate modes for graphics and text.. => Of course I'm not using a free OS because I have loads of cash laying around. that's a little outside my budget now and I think a hard drive is more essential just now. --- [1] http://www.adiusa.com/6p.html pgpKx2B9bkJkZ.pgp Description: PGP signature
