Bug#531007: konqueror: Can't load locally compiled kpart: "shared library not found"

2009-05-29 Thread Adrian von Bidder
Package: konqueror
Version: 4:4.2.2-1
Severity: normal

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Heyho!

[[ I realize that this is probably not konqueror's fault but some other
component deep inside the KDE library maze. Reporting at my "entry
point" for lack of knowledge. So let's the reassign odissey start. ]]

I compiled the webkit kpart from svn:

  http://lists.debian.org/debian-kde/2009/04/msg00440.html

Which seemed to work, meaning: no errors until make install. So I have
it sitting în /usr/local.

First issue: I don't see it offered in konq. The webkitpart.desktop
file resides in /usr/local/share/kde4/services/ which, apparently, is
ignored by KDE. Solution: just copy it to ~/.kde/share/kde4/services.
Seems to work, since now I can chose the WebKit part in Konqueror.

But: it fails to load, with "shared library not found".

So it seems /usr/local/lib/kde4/, where the binary kpart resides, is
likewise not known to KDE :-(

(( yes, I realize I could just install into /usr, or even package it
properly, but OTOH /usr/local should be usable for locally installed
stuff ... ))

And hints?

cheers

Bug#531007: /usr/local should be included by default

2009-05-29 Thread Adrian von Bidder
reassign 531007 kdelibs5
retitle 531007 /usr/local should be included by default
thanks

Hi,

See the original bug report on what happened before.

export KDEDIRS=/usr/local
kbuildsyocca4

and then it suddenly works ...

I think that in keeping with Unix tradition, /usr/local should be included
by default as search path for pretty much everything, overriding stuff
installed by the packaging system. (And then stuff in ~ should override
what's in /usr/local.)

cheers
-- vbi

(Thanks to pusling for his input.)

(pointer for me if pusling doesn't beat me to it:

 + if you want to fix it, you should look at kstandarddirs.cpp in the
 + kdecore subdir of kde4libs source package ,)

Hello,

the bug you reported is a KDE bug. Please report it via
Help -> Report bug... menu item of the respective application
or by visiting https://bugs.kde.org/ and following instructions
to report a new bug.

Debian Qt/KDE maintainers do not have resources to deal with
non Debian-specific bugs and therefore it is unlikely that
your bug will be solved if you do not report it to KDE developers
directly (unless it is/has been reported by somebody else).

Whenever you open a bug report or find an existing one on the KDE
bug tracking system, you can couple both this Debian bug and the
KDE bug together by sending a mail with the text below to

So you have found the Developer's Reference. Nice. The problem is, that
we have no way to realize what is written there. We simply have not the
manpower to forward the tons of upstream bugs we receive. KDE is a very
very huge beast and we are very less developers. Sou our choices are to
a) Package new releases and fix packaging bugs, or b) Forward bugs
upstreams.
So, what do you prefer? It is not that we are to lazy to forward the
bugs, we would love to do it. But sadly it is not possible.

I find it way less rude to tell you that it is not likely that we
forward the bug upstream instead of letting the bug rot the next 3 years
and then as you to report if the bug still applies.

I hope you get the point.

Everyone is welcome to join the team and forward bugs btw...

Greetings,
Armin

In fact, the "let upstream bugs rot for years" practise has already been in
effect for *years*. We changed it a bit to "let users know about it so they
can do something to get their bugs actually solved". I think it is better
because:

1) The user knows that probably no real action is going to be taken on his/her
Debian bug. Moreover, clear instructions in the mail help the user to get the
bug actually solved (given upstream cares about the bug).

2) The user knows that debian kde developers think the bug is KDE (upstream)
bug, not packaging bug.

3) We are still commited to solving packaging bugs or help solving
grave/serious/critical upstream bugs. Clear separation of those two kinds
means the bugs that we CAN solve do not get lost among the bugs we CANNOT
solve.

Regardless what manuals say, you can follow them 100% only if your package is
small. But KDE is HUUUGE with lots of packages. In that case you have to
change common practise to meet the reality of the real world.

Bug#531072: libqt4-gui: Widget only receives QTabletEvent if it is top-level widget

2009-05-29 Thread Christian Pulvermacher

Package: libqt4-gui
Version: 4.5.1-2
Severity: normal

When creating a widget via

  class Test : public QWidget {
Q_OBJECT
  public:
Test(QWidget *parent = 0) : QWidget(parent) {}
  protected:
void tabletEvent(QTabletEvent*) { std::cout << "got event\n";}
  };

  Test *t = new Test;
  test->show();

it correctly receives tablet events.
However, when I do:

  QWidget *w = new QWidget;
  test->setParent(w);
  w->show();

my tabletEvent() never gets called. Other event types don't seem to be
affected.

This also breaks the widgets/tablet example in the qt4-demos package.

Package: general
Severity: wishlist

I suggest the creation of a meta package named for example debian-kde-desktop
which should
install the most common used KDE aplications in a Desktop and KDE Desktop with
Debian artwork.
At style of meta package kubuntu-desktop in Ubuntu project.
A general configuration may be:
-Open Office as office suit.
-Kaffeine as video player.
-Amarok as audio player.
-D3lphin as default File Manager (It is easy configure KDE 3.5 for it).
-Konqueror and Iceweasel web browsers availables.
-Gwenview as image viewer.
-Gimp as image editor.
-Kwrite or kate as text editor.
-Adept suit for Package Management (adept-manager, adept-updater,
adept-notifier,
adept-installer), including software-properties-kde.
-Kmail as mail manager.
-Gdebi-kde for manual installation of Debian Packages.
-Ark for file compression.
-k3b for CD/DVD burning and Audio/Video extraction.
-speedcrunch calculator.
-gtk-qt-engine configured for a well presentation of possible installed gtk
aplications in KDE.
-xmodmap and kmilo well configured for having special keyboard keys available.
-kooka for use scanner.
-kdpf or acroread for PDF viewing.
-qt4-qtconfig installed for configure qt 4 aplications apparience (as
speedcrunch).
-ksystemlog for view system logs.
-kmix for volume management.

And any other aplication useful for Desktop use and management. The idea is to
install one
aplication for each function trying to choose the best aplication for each
function,
for example is a waste of disk having installed gwenview and kview,
kaffeine + kaboodle + noatun, speedcrunch + kcalc, adept + kpackage ...

You shoud do the same for XFCE Desktop and Gnome.

I hope for you acept the idea.

Package: kde
Severity: wishlist

The meta-package kde installs a full suite of applications and tools.
Quite a number of these packages have a dedicated target audience, such
as kdegames, kdetoys and kdeedu.

The drawback of the superduper kde package is in download time,
diskspace and - more important - the cluttering of the menu system.

Therefore, I propose to introduce a lean-and-mean kde-desktop
meta-package, that includes all mainstream applications and tools.

As such, my request support bugreport 448276.

Package: kate
Version: 4:4.0.2-1

Kate (4.0.66) cannot be installed on a KDE 3 Desktop as kate depends on
libplasma1, which conflicts the KDE 3 base packages.
The kate plasma applet should become an extra package, so that there will be no
more dependencies on libplasma1.
