I think I solved it with a change to the xinetd entry , I will look for my fix 
in the morning.

By adding the only_from directive to the /etc/xinetd.d/amandaclient config file 
should prevent the launch of the client  if from a wrong source.

The only from takes the form of
onlyfrom=XX.XX.XX.XX
Address or s FQDN wull work if the dNS system will resolve it for you
onlyfrom=myclient.example.com
