Bug#1084187: RM: xstarfish -- ROM; ftbfs, orphaned

2024-10-06 Thread Chris Hofstaedtler
Package: ftp.debian.org
Severity: normal
User: ftp.debian@packages.debian.org
Usertags: remove
X-Debbugs-Cc: xstarf...@packages.debian.org
Control: affects -1 + src:xstarfish

Please remove xstarfish; it is orphaned since 2020 and started ftbfs'ing
with gcc-14. In the O: bug, it was already noted that the package is a
QA problem.

Seems like it is time to let it go.

Thanks,
Chris

I tried recompiling antigrav with libsdl1.2-compat-dev instead of
libsdl1.2-dev, in preparation for having src:sdl12-compat take over the
libsdl1.2-dev package name.

I found that antigrav failed to build from source due to several missing
build-dependencies: it requires pkg.m4 macros, and ,
leading to errors such as:

> ./configure: line 5844: syntax error near unexpected token `SDL,'
> ./configure: line 5844: `PKG_CHECK_MODULES(SDL, sdl >= $min_sdl_version,'

or after installing pkgconf:

> checking for sdl >= 1.1.5... yes
> checking for GL/gl.h... no
> configure: error: *** OpenGL not found ***

I'm going to work around this by adding dependencies to
libsdl1.2-compat-dev, but please add explicit build-dependencies on
any packages that antigrav explicitly checks for.

Thanks,
smcv

Dear Maintainer,

It has been noticed that the autopkgtest in antigrav is running a
trivial command that does not provide significant test coverage:

- xvfb-run -a /usr/games/antigrav &

Executing that command is considered to be a trivial test, which
does not provide significant coverage for a package as a whole.
But these tests are a useful way to detect regressions in dependencies
and prevent them from breaking your package.

However, it is important that we are realistic about the level of
test coverage provided by these commands: most regressions cannot be
detected in this way. So it is not appropriate for packages with only
superficial tests to have the reduced migration time to migrate from
unstable to testing as that means less opportunity for testing by users
compared to the package with no tests.

To support this, the keyword "Restrictions: superficial" has been
defined [1]. Packages where all tests are marked with this keyword are not
considered for the reduced migration age from unstable to testing, and
will not be allowed to migrate automatically in later stages of the
freeze [2].

Its always better to have more extensive testing than having
superficial testing, which again is better than having no test.

Please consider i) Adding a non-trivial test, and/or ii) Mark the
trivial test with "Restrictions: superficial", similar to
[3] or [4].

The Release Team has listed this issue in the list of Release Critical
Issues for bullseye [5] and has mentioned that the test must be marked
superficial if it is not testing one of its own installed binary
packages in some way. As a result, the severity of this bug report might
be increased to serious in future.

When using valgrind, it doesn't show source code line numbers in lua
shared library. Is this debuglink vs build-is issue / valgrind failure
or something else?

The same with lua5.2.

[This bug is targeted to the upcoming trixie release]

Please keep this issue open in the bug tracker for the package it
was filed for. If a fix in another package is required, please
file a bug for the other package (or clone), and add a block in this
package. Please keep the issue open until the package can be built in
a follow-up test rebuild.

The package fails to build in a test rebuild on at least amd64 with
gcc-14/g++-14, but succeeds to build with gcc-13/g++-13. The
severity of this report will be raised before the trixie release.

The full build log can be found at:
http://qa-logs.debian.net/2024/07/01/nam_1.15-7_unstable_gccexp.log
The last lines of the build log are at the end of this report.

To build with GCC 14, either set CC=gcc-14 CXX=g++-14 explicitly,
or install the gcc, g++, gfortran, ... packages from experimental.

  apt-get -t=experimental install g++

Common build failures are new warnings resulting in build failures with
-Werror turned on, or new/dropped symbols in Debian symbols files.
For other C/C++ related build failures see the porting guide at
http://gcc.gnu.org/gcc-14/porting_to.html

achilles includes but does not have the corresponding
build-dependency on libglu1-mesa-dev.

At the moment it compiles successfully anyway, because libsdl1.2-dev
pulls in libglu1-mesa-dev; but it fails to build when libsdl1.2-compat-dev
is installed, because libsdl1.2-compat-dev does not have that dependency.

I'm going to add a dependency on libsdl2-dev to libsdl1.2-compat-dev as a
workaround, but please give achilles explicit build-dependencies on all
the libraries that it requires.

Thanks,
smcv

I tried compiling adplay on a porterbox with libsdl1.2-compat-dev
instead of libsdl1.2-dev, in preparation for having a future version of
sdl12-compat take over the libsdl1.2-dev name.

I found that adplay FTBFS with:

> configure.ac:19: error: possibly undefined macro: AC_CHECK_LIB
> If this token and others are legitimate, please use m4_pattern_allow.
> See the Autoconf documentation.
> configure.ac:19: error: possibly undefined macro: AC_MSG_ERROR
> configure.ac:21: error: possibly undefined macro: AC_MSG_WARN
> autoreconf: error: /usr/bin/autoconf failed with exit status: 1
> dh_autoreconf: error: autoreconf -f -i returned exit code 1

This appears to be fixable by installing pkgconf, which this package
requires for the pkg.m4 macros.

With the old libsdl1.2-dev, pkgconf was pulled in by this dependency chain:

libsdl1.2-dev -> libpulse-dev -> libglib2.0-dev -> pkg-config -> pkgconf

As a pragmatic workaround for legacy software I'm going to make
libsdl1.2-dev depend on pkgconf, but please fix this properly by adding
Build-Depends on all the components that this package explicitly uses.

Thanks,
smcv
