Dear Maintainer,

In some situations, the "Changes for: ..." line becomes way too long and
can
break functionalities such as reported in #952898. For this specific
case, I could certainly workaround apticron directly, but I think this
issue
would be better addressed in apt-listchanges, avoiding future issues in
other
tools and usage.

Thanks for maintaining apt-listchanges.

Bests,

   * New maintainer. (Closes: #981890)
   * Overhaul how apt-listchanges determines which changelog and NEWS

 (Closes: #478188, #748631, #760918, #1020858, #1023084, #1052986)
   * Don't flash Gtk frontend window briefly without displaying anything.
 (Closes: #514865)
   * Allow Gtk frontend window to start hidden with `--hide' command-line
 option or `hide' config setting.
   * Flash or badge the Gtk frontend taskbar icon when content is ready in
 the window.
   * Fix broken `--filter' command-line option / `filter' configuration
 file setting. It previously caused the program to crash when used.
 (Closes: #1052569)
   * Fix man page to no longer falsely state that `--latest' can only be
 used with a single .deb file. In fact `--latest' works fine with
 multiple .deb files.
   * Don't assume that all binary packages from the same source have the
 same changelog and news entries, thereby potentially failing to
 display some messages to the user. (Closes: #383803)
   * Flush output before prompting for install confirmation. Thanks to
 Timon Reinold. (Closes: #1028474)

   * Romanian translation of the program. Thanks to Remus-Gabriel Chelu.
 (Closes: #1034197, #1034241)
   * Install Python files required by the application in the standard
 location rather than a custom location, and use the standard Debian
 mechanism for packaging a Debian package rather than custom packaging.
   * Remove APT_HOOK_INFO_FD backward compatibility code that was obsolete
 as of Debian 10.
   * Fix some errant debug messages that were being printed even when
 `--debug' wasn't specified.
   * Code cleanup and improvement, including `flake8' and `pylint'
 compatibility, (some) unit tests, and adherence to newer standards and
 best practices.
   * Remove TODO from /usr/share/doc/apt-listchanges since it's out-of-date
 and unlikely to be useful to anyone.

Dear Maintainer,

when using the "--confirm" option, apt-listchanges writes a prompt to
stderr, flushes stderr and waits for the user to confirm before
continuing. This assumes that the frontend already informed the user
about all relevant changes.
When using the "text" frontend, those changelogs will have been written
to stdout. But unless stdout is a tty, they will have not yet been
flushed.

That means everything works fine if stdout is a tty:

$ apt-listchanges --confirm --frontend=text --latest=1
/var/cache/apt/archives/apt_1.8.2.3_amd64.deb
apt-listchanges: Reading changelogs...
apt-listchanges: News
-

[...]

apt-listchanges: Changelogs
---

[...]

apt-listchanges: Do you want to continue? [Y/n]

But if stdout is something else, stdout is not flushed before waiting
for user input. The user is asked to confirm changes, they have not yet
seen:

$ apt-listchanges --confirm --frontend=text --latest=1
/var/cache/apt/archives/apt_1.8.2.3_amd64.deb | cat
apt-listchanges: Do you want to continue? [Y/n]

Only after the user gives an answer, the actual changelogs appear:

$ apt-listchanges --confirm --frontend=text --latest=1
/var/cache/apt/archives/apt_1.8.2.3_amd64.deb | cat
apt-listchanges: Do you want to continue? [Y/n] y
apt-listchanges: Reading changelogs...
apt-listchanges: News
-

[...]

apt-listchanges: Changelogs
---

[...]

To be able to make an informed decision on whether to continue, the user
should be able to see the changelog before having to answer the prompt.
To facilitate this, apt-listchanges should flush stdout before propting
the user:

Hello,

I have a reproducible problem with the xbindkeys-config package - it
segfaults if no existing config has been found (after recommending how
to create one, at least something something positive) and I press the
GetKey button. It works when I create an .xbindkeysrc file, but segfault
is not the right way to go anyways...

Package: apt-listchanges
Version: 3.27
Severity: normal

The --filter option to apt-listchanges (and the corresponding
configuration file system), which is intended to be used with the log
frontend, can't possibly work. It causes a crash with a traceback when
it is used because the code to implement uses methods that aren't
available on the class. I already know the fix -- adding a missing
mixin to the class definition -- and will be committing it when I have
salsa access, but I am filing this bug for the record so that others
can find it if necessary.

Package: xbindkeys-config
Version: 0.1.3-1
Severity: normal

Whenever I try to modify my xbindkeysrc file using xbindkeys-config, it crashes
on two particular entries. I've attached a copy of my .xbindkeysrc. I was going
to attache one of cores left behind, but its 1.1M. If you want one, let me
know. The entries that are causing troubles are the "Disable Autolock" and
"Enable Autolock" entries. I'm sure this is because I have rather long strings
of commands in them, or because the commands have disallowed characters in
them, but I would expect the program to either warn about it, or at very
least clean up nicely instead of crashing. Oh yeah, I created those entries
using xbindkeys-config. And I know that at very least, enable one works.

Package: apt-listchanges
Version: 3.27
Severity: normal

As discussed in #1052697.

When a source package is renamed (e.g. gcc-* and python3.*), often we
carry across the old changelog. apt-listchanges then includes the full
history in its list of new changelog entries.

In these particular cases, the old history maintains the old source
package name and version, so it should be possible to check the database
and see that these changelog entries have been displayed.

One can argue that it's correct to re-display the full history, but this
has the effect of drowning out other changelog entries. When I hit these
situation, I just mark-as-read and continue. If there was anything
important in other changelogs, I'd miss it.

Severity: normal

exim4-base, exim4-config, exim4-daemon-light and exim4-daemon-heavy
are all built from the exim4 source package, but they have different
NEWS.Debian files. This is to honor the fact that you can run exim4
without exim4-config and wouldn't be interested in NEWS.Debian entries
that only belong to exim4-config, and that you are not interested in
NEWS.Debian entries that only concern exim4-daemon-heavy if you're in
fact running the light daemon.

apt-listchanges mishandles this case and doesn't display all
NEWS.Debian entries. It should match NEWS.Debian files with a
fingerprint (like md5sum) and not silently assume that all binary
packages that are built from the same source have the same NEWS.Debian.

Greetings
Marc

Package: apt-listchanges
Version: 2.82
Severity: wishlist

Sometimes apt-listchanges fails and does not see the changelogs for
some updates. This can happen for various reasons; in the past I have
seen random Python changes temporarily break apt-listchanges, and most
recently the python bdb rollback caused this problem. When a problem
like this happens, and later gets fixed, apt-listchanges shows all the
changelog entries it has seen, not just those corresponding to the
upgrade in progress.

To avoid this, I'd like to have some option to tell apt-listchanges
that I have seen the changelogs for all installed packages.

Alternatively, perhaps apt-listchanges could just show the entries
newer than the currently installed version, rather than all those it
hasn't seen.

Package: apt-listchanges
Version: 2.85.13
Severity: normal

Hi

While working on patch for #730779, I tried to create a transitional
realpath binary package (inside coreutils source package) together
with debian/realpath.NEWS file. After a few tries to convince
apt-listchanges to display the NEWS file, I've noticed the following
lines in apt-listchanges source:

# For packages with non uniform binary versions wrt the source
# version, the version reported for the binary package is the
# source
# one, which lacks binNMU.
#
# This is why even if we've seen a package we may miss bits of
# changelog in some odd cases
if found.has_key(srcpackage) and \
apt_pkg.version_compare(srcversion, found[srcpackage]) <= 0:
continue

The lines effectively ignore all changelog & NEWS files from the
second, third, and so on binary package built from same source.
This is most probably done for performance purposes, but on the other
hand this behavior might be highly surprising for users.

I've just checked that there are a few source packages that already provide
different NEWS files for different binaries - please see the attached file
for a list. Even though this is less than per mill of all source packages,
I guess people who maintain such separate NEWS files would like apt-listchanges
to display them.

Regards,
robert

Package: apt-listchanges
Version: 3.22+nmu2
Severity: important

Hi,

sometimes, apt-listchanges doesn't show NEWS entries when it is supposed
to show them.
I suspect this happens, when a src package builds multiple binary
packages and the NEWS entry is not from the "main" binary package.

A specific case is src:systemd which builds the udev package
See
https://salsa.debian.org/systemd-team/systemd/-/merge_requests/113#note_207684
which illustrates the problem.

If I upgrade udev alone, the NEWS entry for udev is shown.
If I upgrade all binary packages from src:systemd, the NEWS entry is not
shown.

The test VM is still available, so if you want me to run further
diagnostics, please let me know.

Regards,
Michael

Hi,

While scanning some packages I found the following piece of code which leads
to a buffer overflow when an overly long HOME env var is used.

Affected code:
xbindkeys_config.c:
>char buf[1024];
>int i;
>gboolean show=FALSE;
>
>sprintf(buf, "%s/.xbindkeysrc", getenv ("HOME"));

speedc.c:
>   char *p, buf[1024];
>   int i;
>
[...]
>   /* create $HOME/.xbindkey_config is not exist */
>   sprintf(buf,"%s/.xbindkeys_config", getenv ("HOME"));

menu.c, middle.c:
>   char buf[1024];
>   sprintf(buf, "%s/.xbindkeysrc", getenv ("HOME"));

The GTK+ frontend has a very bad behavior: it will display a window
and quickly close it if there is nothing to show. When the window is
displayed (either because it has stuff to show or not), the window
simply pops up in front of anything you are doing.

It should instead show in the background requesting attention (so that
its taskbar button will pulse no matter in what virtual desktop you
are). And should, of course, only display the window if there is
something to show.

THanks,

Hi.

I've think we've had that bug before...
apt-listchanges doesn't show changes for all packages.

It used to do so for util-linux* and I've just seem it again for
lvm2/dmcrypt, which I also remember used to be affected by that.

Cheers,
Chris.

To reproduce this crash, launch xbindkeys-config when ~/.xbindkeysrc doesn't

I really appreciate the "headers" option; it helps clarify the binary
packages associated with the source-package changelog. However, having
the header pressed right up against the top of the first changelog entry
feels cramped. Could you please consider adding a bit more whitespace?
For instance, a blank line after the header, and a second blank line
before the header to keep the header visually grouped with the
associated changelog entries?

This package has Build-Depends on GTK 2 (libgtk2.0-dev), or produces
binary packages with a Depends on GTK 2.

GTK 2 was superseded by GTK 3 in 2011 (see
). It no longer receives any significant
upstream maintenance, and in particular does not get feature development
for new features like UI scaling on high-pixel-density displays (HiDPI)
and native Wayland support. GTK 3 is in maintenance mode and GTK 4 is
approaching release, so it seems like a good time to be thinking about
minimizing the amount of GTK 2 in the archive.

GTK 2 is used by some important productivity applications like GIMP, and
has also historically been a popular UI toolkit for proprietary software
that we can't change, so perhaps removing GTK 2 from Debian will never be
feasible. However, it has reached the point where a dependency on it is
a bug - not a release-critical bug, and not a bug that can necessarily
be fixed quickly, but a piece of technical debt that maintainers should
be aware of.

A porting guide is provided in the GTK 3 documentation:
https://developer.gnome.org/gtk3/stable/migrating.html

Some libraries (for example libgtkspell0) expose GTK as part of their
API/ABI, in which case removing the deprecated dependency requires
breaking API/ABI. For these libraries, in many cases there will already
be a corresponding GTK 3 version (for example libgtkspell3-3-0), in which
case the GTK 2-based library should probably be deprecated or removed
itself. If there is no GTK 3 equivalent, of a GTK 2-based library,
maintainers should talk to the dependent library's upstream developers
about whether the dependent library should break API/ABI and switch
to GTK 3, or whether the dependent library should itself be deprecated
or removed.

A few packages extend GTK 2 by providing plugins (theme engines, input
methods, etc.) or themes, for example ibus and mate-themes. If these
packages deliberately support GTK 2 even though it is deprecated, and
they also support GTK 3, then it is appropriate to mark this mass-filed
bug as wontfix for now. I have tried to exclude these packages from
the mass-bug-filing, but I probably missed some of them.

Regards,
smcv

Package: xbindkeys-config
Version: 0.1.3-2
Severity: important
Tags: security

If you use this program and "view generated file" the current output
will be saved to the file /tmp/xbindkeysrc-tmp.

This allows the corruption of any file the user has permission to write
to.

Later this predictable file is used to execute commands:

/*/
void middle_apply_action(GtkWidget *parent, void *data)
{

  unlink(TEMP_FILE);
  save_file(TEMP_FILE);
  system("killall -9 xbindkeys");
  usleep(500);
  /* printf("\n\noutput = %d\n\n",system("xbindkeys -f " TEMP_FILE ));
*/
  system("xbindkeys -f " TEMP_FILE );
}

Really most of this complexity could go away if we just assumed the
editor would write to a file the user specified, or ~/.xbindkeysrc.

Given the number of bugs that have been untouched for a long time this
package should probably not go into the Jessie release without a good
update.

Regardless this is a classic case of insecure-temporary files and should
almost certainly have a CVE ID allocated.

Steve

Assume I have a package foo (= 1.6) which has had a NEWS
entry for version 1.2 only. Now I upload foo (= 1.7) with
a NEWS entry for version 1.5 (backdated NEWS entry, I know
of two recent occurrences). Because the user had installed
1.6 prior to upgrading to 1.7, the 1.5 NEWS entry is not
shown, even though the 1.6 package’s last NEWS entry was
for version 1.2 – I thought apt-listchanges kept track of
which entries it had already shown?

Backports make this even more complicated…

Package: xbindkeys-config
Version: 0.1.3-2+b2
Severity: important

Hi!
There's already a separate bug about "Get key" segfaulting when there's no
default config (#268630) -- but for me, it segfaults a bit later when the
config is there.

Without the config, "Get key" segfaults immediately.
After generating it manually, a window appears, but trying to interact with
it results in:

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.

Bug#1052477: Removed package(s) from unstable

2023-10-07 Thread Debian FTP Masters
We believe that the bug you reported is now fixed; the following
package(s) have been removed from unstable:

xbindkeys-config |0.1.3-3 | source, amd64, arm64, armel, armhf, i386,
mips64el, ppc64el, riscv64, s390x

--- Reason ---
RoQA; orphaned; dead upstream; depends on gtk2
--

Note that the package(s) have simply been removed from the tag
database and may (or may not) still be in the pool; this is not a bug.
The package(s) will be physically removed automatically when no suite
references them (and in the case of source, when no binary references
it). Please also remember that the changes have been done on the
master archive and will not propagate to any mirrors until the next
dinstall run at the earliest.

Packages are usually not removed from testing by hand. Testing tracks
unstable and will automatically remove packages which were removed
from unstable when removing them from testing causes no dependency
problems. The release team can force a removal from testing if it is
really needed, please contact them if this should be the case.

We try to close bugs which have been reported against this package
automatically. But please check all old bugs, if they were closed
correctly or should have been re-assigned to another package.

Thank you for reporting the bug, which will now be closed. If you
have further comments please address them to 1052...@bugs.debian.org.

Package: arcanist-clang-format-linter
Version: 0.git20161021-3
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Dear Maintainer,

When arcanist-clang-format-linter is installed, arcanist will fail to run with
this error:

$ arcanist help

#8 /usr/share/arcanist/bin/arc(10): require_once('...')
#9 {main}
  thrown in /usr/share/arcanist/src/extensions/clang-format-linter.php on line 3

The error does not appear when using arcanist without having this package
installed.

As this render the arcanist tool unusable, I've marked this bug as grave.

The most probable cause to this is the fact that arcanist-clang-format-linter
version is from 2016 but arcanist is from 2022.
I guess there were breaking changes in arcanist since then.

Upstream seem to have stopped any development on it as the last commit is from
2016.
See https://github.com/pwithnall/morefas-phabricator.

I installed this package to do development on LLVM (which use phabricator).
But it seems that it is in fact not needed, LLVM having its own lint script for
code style (which use clang-format too).

So I guess the solution is to remove this package from Debian as it doesn't
work anymore and was not updated upstream ?
