Bug#1051364: nvi uses Conflicts in violation of policy 10.1

2023-10-02 Thread Amin Bandali
X-Debbugs-CC: Tobias Frost

Dear Tobi, all,

I've prepared a patch + QA upload for unstable to address this.

The upload is on mentors.debian.net:

https://mentors.debian.net/package/nvi/

And the patch against the https://salsa.debian.org/debian/nvi
repo is attached.

I plan on preparing a separate QA upload for some other small
improvements, like updating the debian/watch file to point to
the git repo on repo.or.cz rather than the current broken page.
Or if you prefer, I can amend this change and do these as part
of this one.

Package: nvi
Version: 1.81.6-18
Severity: serious
Justification: policy 10.1

nvi has declared Conflicts with nex due to the duplicated use of
/usr/bin/nex. Since nvi has come first, this purely is a bug in the nex
package and it is tracked as #1022957. On the nvi side, such a conflict
is harmful, because a fixed nex (one that no longer contains
/usr/bin/nex) cannot be coinstalled. The conflict is declared in direct
violation of policy section 10.1 and should therefore be removed.

Bug#1053377: ghostscript-x: ghostscript 10.02.0~dfsg-2 does not remove ghostscript-x 10.01.2~dfsg-1 automatically

2023-10-02 Thread Alban Browaeys
Package: ghostscript-x
Version: 10.01.2~dfsg-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,
when I attempt an upgrade, the ghostscript upgrade from 10.01.2~dfsg-1
to 10.02.0~dfsg-2 is on hold.
This is because I have ghostscript-x 10.01.2~dfsg-1 installed.

Looking at the dependencies in aptitude I see that 10.02.0~dfsg-2
conflict with any "ghostscript" package != 10.01.2~dfsg-1
Also ghostscript 10.02.0~dfsg-2 does not conflict with ghostscript-x,
only replaces ghostscript-x (< 10.02.0~dfsg-1).

This is for unstable and testing.

I bet teh aim was to get rid of the ghostscript-x transitional package.

Best regards,
Alban

Bug#748631: This will be fixed in the next release of apt-listchanges

2023-10-02 Thread Jonathan Kamens
The next release of apt-listchanges completely overhauls how it
determines which changelog and NEWS entries are displayed to users. The
overhaul addresses the issue identified in this bug.

Bug#749788: I think this is an apt request, not an apt-listchanges

2023-10-02 Thread Jonathan Kamens

Control: reassign -1 apt

The timing of when apt-listchanges gets called vs. when packages get
installed is controlled by apt, not by apt-listchanges. While it would
certainly be possible to add an option to apt to call apt-listchanges
after rather than before the upgrade, and to omit the --confirm option
when doing so since it obviously makes no sense to ask the user for
confirmation afrer the upgrade has already happened, this change would
need to be made in apt, not in apt-listchanges.

That message doesn't occur anywhere in the apt-listchanges source tree
and never has.

As far as I can tell it comes from `whatmaps`. Also as far as I can
tell, apt-listchanges has never depended on `whatmaps` directly, though
perhaps at some point in the past it depended on something that depended
on `whatmaps`.

Right now you can have a working apt-listchanges on your system without
even having `whatmaps` installed.

As such I'm not sure this was ever an apt-listchanges bug and in any
case I don't think it is anymore, so I'm closing it.

If you are able to reproduce it, please open a new

Bug#1003112: apt-listchanges uses sensible-pager now, should this be sensible-pager's job?

2023-10-02 Thread Russ Allbery
Jonathan Kamens writes:

I'm not sure how sensible-pager could do this job, since it doesn't know
whether it is being invoked in a circumstance where secure model should be
enabled. That information is not part of its API, and enabling secure
mode whenever it is invoked seems obviously incorrect.

I assume the problem that the original bug reporter is trying to solve is
that they want to grant sudo access to run apt upgrade, but that is
equivalent to granting full root shell access because of:

apt -> apt-listchanges -> less -> !command

I think this is one of those awkward cases where there is no great place
to put this configuration, because none of those components have enough
information to know that it is appropriate. But I think the original bug
report is correct that none of the features LESSSECURE disables are likely
useful in the apt-listchanges context.

The two places where it would make sense to set this to me are in the sudo
configuration using env_file or the like, or setting it in apt-listchanges
since apt-listchanges at least knows what it is invoking the pager to do
and can make an educated guess at what UI options the user is likely to
want. I think the other pieces in the chain have even less information
and are even less suited to making this decision. Of those two options,
having apt-listchanges do it would be less obscure (it's not immediately
obvious that apt could run less), although possibly surprising.

Bug#989496: Isn't this an apt issue in any case?

2023-10-02 Thread Jonathan Kamens
I am confused about why this is filed against apt-listchanges rather
than apt. It's apt that's generating the error message when the
apt-listchanges command exits with a non-zero status. There's no way
apt-listchanges can influence what the error looks like; if we want it
to be prettier, we'll have to change apt. Am I missing something?

Package: apt-listchanges
Version: 2.59-0.2
Severity: wishlist

when changes for many packages are listed, it is useful to skip over some
packages. yet there is no searchable regular expression for the next
package.

for example, if i am upgrading fuse and gconf2 and zsh, i might not be
interested in gconf2 changes and want to go to the zsh changes.
there is no search term that will do that generically.

so if between packages you can put "==" or something that
would help.

even better would be preloading less with "==" as a search string,
if that is possible.

just a wishlist for a very nice program.

thanks.

You can configure the program to add headers with the --headers
command-line flag or the headers configuration file setting and then
search for "--- Changes" or whatever the equivalent is in the language
apt-listchanges displays in on your computer.
