You have LC_ALL set to C, which overrides LANG and forces the pager that apt-listchanges uses, i.e., less, to use the C locale, which does not, and is not expected to, display non-ASCII characters properly. See https://www.gnu.org/software/libc/manual/html_node/Choosing-Locale.html , in particular, "In order to force the system to always use the default locale, the user can set the LC_ALL environment variable to ‘C’." See also the lengthy explanation of this at https://unix.stackexchange.com/a/87763 . To confirm that this is not apt-listchanges's fault, you can redirect the output of apt-listchanges into a file and then display that file with less, and you will see the same behavior. Some applications allow LANG or LANGUAGE to override LC_ALL; those applications are arguably behaving incorrectly. At best you could say that the correct behavior when LANG/LANGUAGE conflicts with LC_ALL is debatable and either behavior is correct. The right way to avoid this issue is not to set LC_ALL=C. Bug#962078: apt-listchanges: feature request: combine identical changelog entries from multiple packages
I have a fix pending which merges changelog entries which are _entirely_ identical, which I implemented as part of addressing bug #383803, but I gather that fix won't work here. If I'm understanding correctly, the issue discussed here is the content of the changelog entry being identical but the package name in the changelog entry (just to be clear: we're talking about the package name written in the entry in the changelog file, not the package that the entry is found in, right?) or its date being different. Can you perhaps provide me of an example of two specific deb files somewhere I can download online which demonstrate this phenomenon so I can reproduce the issue? I suspect with a reproducible test case in hand it will be relatively straightforward to add a fix for this issue to the fix I already have pending for the other one.

Bug#489725: /usr/bin/apt-listchanges: mails are sent with current user's locale
I am not sure I agree with this. Sure, when apt-listchanges is running out of apticron or unattended-upgrades it should use the system locale, and indeed I assume it does in those contexts. But it seems arguably correct to me that if it is being run by a user who has it configured to send email it should send the email using that user's locale settings. Bug#568225: apt-listchanges: crashes after sensible-browser exits with failure
Hmm. A program should stop with an error when it encounters an error condition (a) which is unexpected, (b) it doesn't know how to recover from, and (c) action by the user is probably necessary to fully resolve (in fact, (c) is a bonus; (a) and (b) are probably sufficient to justify stopping). So I don't think apt-listchanges is wrong to exit here. Perhaps, though, it should just print an error message and exit with a non-zero exit status rather than generating a Traceback. What do you think?

Bug#748631: apt-listchanges: add a sanitise mode
Control: retitle -1 apt-listchanges should put separate version numbers in seen DB for each binary package It doesn't seem like adding a sanitise mode (or a sanitize mode for those of us on this side of the pond ;-) ) is the right answer here. Rather, I think we need to understand what is failing about apt-listchanges' version-checking logic and fix it so that it does the right thing. The use should not have to clean anything up manually to see changelog entries. I believe the root cause of this particular bug is that when apt-listchanges processes a group of binary packages all associated with the same source package, it calculates the maximum version number of all the binary packages and puts that version number in the seen DB for all of them. I think after a little reflection (plus looking at the example in this bug ticket) it becomes clear that's not the right thing to do. Different packages built by the same source package can have different version number sequences, and not only that, they can even have different epochs! The version number that goes into the seen DB should be the version number corresponding to each binary package, not the "maximum" version number of all of them in the group.

Bug#1052652: ghostscript: eps2write fails on test file
Package: ghostscript Version: 10.02.0~dfsg-2 Severity: important Dear Maintainer, upgrading ghostscript from 10.01.2~dfsg-1 to 10.02.0~dfsg-2 triggers a regression in the testsuite of fig2dev. I now stripped down the first test failure (testcase 17) to the following problem: Running gs -dSAFER -sDEVICE=eps2write -sPageList=1 -o line.eps line.pdf on 10.01.2~dfsg-1 (and older) versions works as expected, but fails with the following output on 10.02.0~dfsg-2: $ gs -dSAFER -sDEVICE=eps2write -sPageList=1 -o line.eps line.pdf GPL Ghostscript 10.02.0 (2023-09-13) Copyright (C) 2023 Artifex Software, Inc. Error: /undefined in --runpdf-- Operand stack: --nostringval-- 1 ( Error: PDF interpreter encountered an error processing the file.\n) Execution stack: %interp_exit .runexec2 --nostringval-- runpdf --nostringval-- 2 %stopped_push --nostringval-- runpdf runpdf false 1 %stopped_push 1944 1 3 %oparray_pop 1943 1 3 %oparray_pop 1928 1 3 %oparray_pop 1929 1 3 %oparray_pop runpdf Dictionary stack: --dict:752/1123(ro)(G)-- --dict:0/20(G)-- --dict:86/200(L)-- --dict:7/10(L)-- Current allocation mode is local GPL Ghostscript 10.02.0: Unrecoverable error, exit code 1 Since I'm not deep enough in PostScript, I do not understand what this error means nor how to fix it. By trial-and-error I found out, that removing the option "-sPageList=1" avoids the error, but this may result in other side effects in fig2dev, since the above commend only wants to convert the first page of the document.
