Currently, Anacron is setup to run once daily. While this configuration works
fine, it ends up only supporting longer-duration power-cycles; that is, cycles
greater than a day. This is probably good for some server configurations, but
this is not good for desktop and mobile (laptop) systems that are powered off
daily or even more periodically.

In these cases, running Anacron hourly allows the daily scripts to be serviced
by Anacron as a user expects. I believe this will resolve these two bug
reports:

  1) #619648 cron.daily doesn't execute scheduled scripts
  2) #672061 [anacron] Daily cronjobs in crontabs of users aren't ran by
  anacron.

I believe other distributions provide this hourly hook for Anacron, and it may
even be in the Anacron source. I can dig up references if needed. I have
supplied a patch w/ my proposed changes.

Thanks,

Hi,

I hibernate my system via the gnome menu.

At restart, /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/anacron is executed.
In pm-powered.log, I can see:
/usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/anacron true: success.

Unfortunately, the rule in coded the opposite way as it should and the "true"
entry of the case statement stop anacron.

If I replace "stop" with "start", anacron is started at system wakeup:

case $1 in
false)
/usr/sbin/invoke-rc.d anacron stop >/dev/null
;;
true)
/usr/sbin/invoke-rc.d anacron start >/dev/null
;;
esac

It seems that the rules are coded like a "resume" parameter is passed
while waking up after hibernate which is not the case.

Regards

Jean-Luc

Hello,
I see that bug #744753 has been solved by changing the frequency at
which anacron checks whether there are jobs to be executed.
When systemd is PID 1, anacron performs this check hourly via
timer, rather than daily at 7:30, as done on boxes where systemd is
*not* PID 1 (/etc/cron.d/anacron).

This behavior change has a significant side effect: if the box
is up and running at midnight, anacron may begin to execute
daily (and possibly also weekly or monthly) jobs shortly after.
Maybe it will (attempt to) start a backup or something like that,
after midnight, when it could be time to shut the box down...

This is inconsistent with the old behavior and with the behavior
of boxes with non-systemd init systems (where the check is performed
at boot or daily at 7:30, if the box is up and running at that time
of the day).

With the attached patch, the behavior becomes consistent with
the non-systemd one. Thanks to the Persistent=true directive,
any skipped checks will be catched up on boot or on resume,
but the check won't be performed between midnight and 7:30,
unless the box is booted/resumed in that time interval.

I hope this patch may be accepted.

Thanks for your time!
Bye.

Package: anacron
Version: 2.3-26
Severity: normal

The recent changes in anacron.service dropped the start via
multi-user.target.

On upgrades, /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/anacron.service
is not properly removed though and when purging the package the file is
not removed either.

Starting via multi-user.target should either be re-introduced or the
symlink removed on upgrades.

Bug#915060: link-grammar: autopkgtest relies on built binaries without matching dependencies

2018-11-29 Thread Rene Engelhard
Source: link-grammar
Version: 5.5.0-1
Severity: serious

Hi,

$ cat debian/tests/control
Tests: unit-tests
Depends: @, python3-distutils, build-essential, hunspell-en-us, locales-all,
 default-jdk [!hppa !hurd-i386 !m68k !sh4],
Restrictions: build-needed

So far so good.

But that means that in the testing migration autopkgtests this breaks when
there is a hunspell transition.

See e.g.
https://ci.debian.net/data/autopkgtest/testing/amd64/l/link-grammar/1399248/log.gz

What seems to happen (correct me if I am wrong) is:

1. link-grammar gets built. Because the autopkgtest injects libhunspell 1.7
somehow into the
build this one is built against libhunspell-1.7.

2. Now the test packages get installed in a clean environment. Because you just
say "@" you get
the dependencies from your own package (libhunspell-1.6) , not the built one
(as should be, indeed)

3. The test now fails because it cannot open the libhunspell-1.7.so.0 because
what was installed for
2. was just libhunspell-1.6.

Maybe you want to add at least @builddeps@? But that would only hide the
problem...

Regards,

Rene
