Package: apt-p2p
Version: 0.1.0
Severity: wishlist

It would be great if apt-p2p worked out of the box, without having to
rewrite sources.list to activate it. One way to do this is to change
its design to make the daemon a http and ftp proxy, and to specify
this proxy setting in /et/capt/apt.conf.d/. This way it would be
enough to install the package to get it working (as long as the
environment variables http_proxy and ftp_proxy are unset. :).

Please consider doing this to make it easier to activate automatically
at install time.

Happy hacking,

apt-p2p works well and uploads to peers until the automatic disconnect
that my ISP forces every 24h. The router reconnects instantly, but a new
IP is assigned, which is not registered by apt-p2p ("contact" shows old
address). After this peer up- and download do not die completely, but
appear to be considerably lower until I restart apt-p2p and it catches
the new IP. Maybe add a periodical check for a changed IP?

I hope I censored all ip adresses.

For the moment, I've done a manual hack to HTTPServer.py (adding
addr.startswith('192.168.') to the IP permission check) to allow local
IP addresses behind my firewall to download Packages files, but it
would be nice to have a configurable option in apt-p2p.conf that
includes a list/netmask/wildcard/something of permissible addresses
(as was the case for debtorrent). The functions for IP checks in the
python-ipy package might be helpful in this regard.

I wonder if UDP lookups should not be p2p as well, for example a tree
or mesh where each hosts sends the UDP lookup to 5 or 10 other hosts...

If there is enough data TCP xfers can be used instead, like the
gnutella networks... or rather opposite as they use TCP primarily and
UDP only for DCC responses.

Next time I see this I'll get more information on what is going on, I
was in such a hurry at the time I changed IPs. After about 5min the
network settled down enough so that I could use it, I only have a
small WIFI pipe the stream coming in wasn't even 1.54mb and it
basically caused an outage.

Log files, which are created in /var/log/apt-p2p.log are huge[1] and
there's no way in config file to make them smaller (SPEW is set to no).
To make things worse default logrotate settings are weekly and
nocompress...

[1] Depending on machine, it's 100-150 MB a day (after changing
logrotate to daily) on machine running 24/7 with public IP and apt-p2p
version 0.1.5. On 0.1.6 with default (weekly) rotation, but running only
a few hours a day and behind NAT (no ports forwarded) they're 20 or more
MBs, which is also much.

Package: apt-p2p
Version: 0.1.6
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

please continue development on apt-p2p (it is very easy to fix the missing
package dependency in AptPackage.py, see below) as of I still like this project
or else announce it official as dead/discontinued/abandoned.

--- How to fix AptPackage.py (missing module OpProgress): ---
- go to apt_p2p/AptPackage.py and open it with your editor
- Find a line (about line 40) that says: (between arrows)
>>>from apt import OpProgress<<<
- Replace it with: (again leave the arrows out)
>>>from apt.progress.base import OpProgress<<<

This should fix it and make it working again (at least it launches but has
crashes/minor bugs here and there).

Back to topic: Please don't complain about low user base while you still have
unfixed bugs. Please really rethink this (more bugs fixed, more users and not
"more bugs, lesser users").

Thank you,
  Roland Haeder

PS: My two nodes on my server + locally running nodes are all fixed and still
running.

Hi,

during a test with piuparts I noticed your package failed to purge due to a
command not found. According to policy 7.2 you cannot rely on the depends
being available during purge, only the essential packages are available for
sure.

Filing this as important because a.) it's a clear policy violation (to not
clean up at purge) b.) having a piuparts clean archive is a release goal
since lenny and c.) this package being piuparts buggy blocks packages
depending on it from being tested by piuparts (and thus possibly the
detection of more severe problems).

From the attached log (scroll to the bottom...):

The fix should be easy: your package is using adduser or deluser from the
adduser package, which is only priority important. Using useradd or userdel
from the passwd package should fix this problem.

Description: apt helper for peer-to-peer downloads of Debian packages
Apt-P2P is a helper for downloading Debian packages files with APT.
It will download any needed files from other Apt-P2P peers in a
peer-to-peer manner, and so reduce the strain on the Debian mirrors.
 .
The Apt-P2P daemon runs automatically on startup and listens for
requests from APT for files, as well as maintaining membership in a
Distributed Hash Table (DHT). For any files which have a hash
available (most files), peers that have the file are looked for in the
DHT. The file can then be downloaded from them, using the uploading
bandwidth of other peers while reducing the demand on the Debian mirror
network. However, if a package can not be found on any peers, Apt-P2P
will fall back to downloading from a mirror to ensure all packages are
downloaded. Once downloaded, the file is hash checked and added to the
DHT so that other peers can download it without the mirror.
 .
The configuration is very simple, and only involves prepending
'localhost' and the port to your current sources.list lines (similar
 to other apt-proxy-like software).

Hello,
I love apt-p2p and debtorrent. However I can't justify the space
used in /var/cache/apt-p2p/cache. Any thing ove a GB is just too
much. I'd be happy if I could set a limit of 800MB, that's 2hrs worth

Dear Maintainer,

current version of the package does not support Django 1.7, which is the
version included in jessie. As such, the package is probably useless for
all users.

Django 1.7 support was added in version 0.9, released in november 2015.
Version 0.5, which is in Debian, has been released in March 2013.

The package should be removed or upgraded.

Source: django-authority
Version: 0.5-2
Severity: important

Hello,

your package django-authority depends on python-django. As you might
know, Django 1.7 will be soon available and as each new upstream major
version, it brings many changes, some of them which are backwards
incompatible (after a deprecation period covering 2 major versions):
https://docs.djangoproject.com/en/1.7/releases/1.7/
https://docs.djangoproject.com/en/1.7/releases/1.7/#backwards-incompatible-changes-in-1-7

We intend to upload Django 1.7 to unstable as soon as it is available
because we really want the latest version in jessie and the freeze is
approaching fast. In preparation of that, I have uploaded a release
candidate in experimental.

Please test your package against Django 1.7 in experimental. If a new
upstream version of your package is required, please package it now.
If you can't upload it to unstable because it only works with Django 1.7,
feel free to upload it to experimental too.

If the current package works fine, please close this bug (or retitle it as
a suggestion to implement Python 3 support and drop its severity to
wishlist[1]). If it's broken, please tag it as confirmed. If it's not
broken, but would benefit from further work, please tag it as confirmed
but reduce the severity.

If you have experimental in your sources.list you can install the latest
version easily:
$ sudo apt-get install -t experimental python-django python3-django

[1] We have recently added Python 3 support with the addition of
python3-django. Consider doing the same if your package is a Django
application/library.

Thank you for your help!

PS: I will raise the "confirmed" bugs that are still of severity
"important" to "serious" once we upload Django 1.7 to unstable.

Package: apt-p2p
Severity: important
User: de...@lists.debian.org

Dear Maintainer of apt-p2p,

your package appears to be relying on the internal layout of /var/lib/apt/lists
and the location of that directory (which is configurable), as it matches the
following regular expression (and a quick check did not rule out a false
positive):

/var/lib/apt/lists/.*(Packages|Sources)

For the matches found, you can have a quick look at:

https://codesearch.debian.net/search?q=%2Fvar%2Flib%2Fapt%2Flists%2F.*%28Packages%7CSources%29+package%3Aapt-p2p

APT since some time supports compressed indices using the option
`Acquire::gzipIndexes`. Starting with 1.2, index files are stored
with lz4 compression if that option is enabled, providing significant
space savings at low overhead.

Some platforms and users might already have these indexes compressed by default
in order to save space, and your package might not be working for them.

Instead of relying on internals, please use the interfaces provided by
APT 1.1 and newer:

## Command-line interfaces
In order to get paths to index files, please use:

apt-get indextargets --format '$(FILENAME)' "Created-By: $creator"

where `$creator` is `Packages`, `Sources`, `Contents-deb`, `Contents-udeb`,
or `Contents-deb-legacy`, depending on which files you need.

To read the file, use

/usr/lib/apt/apt-helper cat-file ...

This transparently handles compression supported by apt.

## C++ interface
When reading files in C++, you might want to use APT's FileFd class. It
provides the same transparent compression support as `apt-helper cat-file`
(if turned on).

Installation of apt-p2p currently requires a running process (which proxies
apt-get requests) as well as modification of the sources list. Would it be
possible to simplify this process?

Perhaps a script which redirects apt-get requests to the apt-p2p proxy,
without any file modification? If such a script is created, switching to
a P2P aptitude would be easier for the average user. If not, could apt-p2p
monitor the sources list and rewrite URLs on its own?

Hello there!

This package contains a trove classifier[1] in its `setup.py` like
"Programming Language :: Python :: 3". This means that the package's upstream
developers consier this package to be ready for Python 3. This is wonderful!

As part of an ongoing process to migrate as much as we can to Python 3 to
ensure we're ready for our glorious Python 3 future, please build a Python 3
module.

If you need help doing this, please feel free to contact the Debian Python
Modules Team (DPMT), and we can help! If you would welcome a NMU, please do
let the team know (py3porters-de...@lists.alioth.debian.org).

Please upload any new versions before Jessie's release to experimental, the
Release Team has been doing such great work, it'd be a shame to see unstable
out of sync before we release!

If the reason you've not built a Python 3 module is due to the dependency
chain below you, just let me know, and I can add it to our list, or feel
free to file a bug in coordination with the team!

Have a great day, and thanks for your work!
Paul, on behalf of the Python 3 Embetterment Squad

Bug#885564: Removed package(s) from unstable

2017-12-28 Thread Debian FTP Masters
We believe that the bug you reported is now fixed; the following
package(s) have been removed from unstable:

   apt-p2p | 0.1.8 | source, all

--- Reason ---
RoQA; unmaintained, not in testing for 1.5 years
--

Note that the package(s) have simply been removed from the tag
database and may (or may not) still be in the pool; this is not a bug.
The package(s) will be physically removed automatically when no suite
references them (and in the case of source, when no binary references
it). Please also remember that the changes have been done on the
master archive and will not propagate to any mirrors until the next
dinstall run at the earliest.

Packages are usually not removed from testing by hand. Testing tracks
unstable and will automatically remove packages which were removed
from unstable when removing them from testing causes no dependency
problems. The release team can force a removal from testing if it is
really needed, please contact them if this should be the case.

We try to close bugs which have been reported against this package
automatically. But please check all old bugs, if they were closed
correctly or should have been re-assigned to another package.

Thank you for reporting the bug, which will now be closed. If you
have further comments please address them to 885...@bugs.debian.org.

This is analogous to bug #546460 of an: if I run

I get

Anagrams found:
 1. ARENI
 2. ERA IN
 3. REA IN
 4. ANI RE
 5. ARI NE
 6. IRA NE
 7. ARò NEI

while the last one is clearly incorrect, since there was no 'ò' in my string.

Basically, wordplay only works for English speakers. It must be because it's
not aware of UTF-8 encoding, as suggested by Paul Martin in the other bug.

There has since been a QA upload of 0.5-2 which made most of these
patches redundant. I have adopted the package, and made my first
upload (0.5-3) including your Rules-Requires-Root patch.

I'm not convinced that it makes sense to add the GPG signature check in
the absence of any new uploads, as we don't really know what key might
be used for this.

Let me know whether there are still any changes you still want on top
of 0.5-3.

Ben.

I say we take off; nuke the site from orbit. It's the only way to be
sure.
